Note 1:   The Prairie Blade was a weekly publication.  The cost of a single copy was 10¢.  An annual subscription was $2.60, provided one paid in advance.  The above article was found on microfilm at The Center for American History, The University of Texas – Austin, 2.101 Sid Richardson Hall, Austin, Texas 78712.

Note 2:   The reference to Know Noth-heresy probably refers to the anti-foreign, anti-Catholic secret society called the American Order, more popularly known as the Know-Nothing movement, which reached Texas by the mid-1850’s.  Many Texans joined the movement especially its manifestation, the American party.  See  “AMERICAN PARTY." The Handbook of Texas Online. <http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/view/AA/waa1.html> [Accessed Wed Jun 11 2:27:07 US/Central 2003

The Prairie Blade article is copied in the format that it was originally published.  Some of the names were hard to read, but I think I got most of them right (there are a lot of abbreviations). .. Ron Nelson
