John Bill ‘J.B.’ Swink

 John Bill Swink, known as “J.B.,” passed from this earth on Sunday, May 28, 2006, at South Place Nursing Home in Athens, at the age of 86 years, 7 months and 15 days. He was born near Dawson on Oct. 13, 1919, to Myrtle Lacy Peay Swink and Roy George Swink.
Roy George Swink died when his son was six months old. Myrtle and her young child moved to Corsicana, where, on Christmas Day 1925, she wed Will M. Taylor. Thus, for Christmas, J.B. got a daddy, brothers and a sister. The couple later added another son to their family.
After graduation from Corsicana High School in 1938, J.B. worked for a local bank, beginning a business career that was to span four decades.
During World War II, he served in the United States Army Air Corps, Field Artillery Air Detachment. In this time, he met and married Margaret Dougherty on Dec. 29, 1943, in Glendale, Ariz.
After his military service, he and Margaret moved to his hometown, where he returned to his bank job. Later establishing himself in the utilities field, he eventually moved with his family to Athens, where he later joined New Era Electric Cooperative. In 1982, J.B. retired as general manager of New Era.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Corsicana and later First Baptist Church in Athens. J.B.’s other activities and involvements were many and varied. He was a board member of Corsicana’s Chamber of Commerce and Industrial Foundation, continuing his work in these areas in Athens. He was active on the Athens Park Board, in the annual farm and ranch tour, Henderson County Regional Fair, 4-H, and FHA. One of his proudest moments was completion of North Park in Athens and renaming it O.D. Baggett Park in honor of Justice of the Peace Baggett, the first African-American to serve in an elective office in Athens.
His devoted wife Margaret died on Christmas Eve 2004. Also preceding him in death were his parents, four brothers, and two sisters.
Surviving are his daughter Sharon and husband Wayne, his son Bill and wife Judi, and his granddaughters Gretchen and husband David, Angela, and Holly and Jennifer. In addition, he is survived by his precious great-grandchildren, Hailey and Cooper. Surviving, also, are brothers- and sisters-in-law Joe Hodges Sr., Jack Wallace, Fran Taylor, Lavern Taylor, Eva Shelton, and Holly Hankins, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 3, at Corley Funeral Home Chapel, Corsicana, with burial to follow at Oakwood Cemetery, Corsicana.
Sherwin Hankins, Jim Hankins, Kie Hankins, Joe Hodges Jr., Guy Furr and Chad Morgan will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Buster Geddie, Herbert Smith, Joe Bob Tekell, Don Taylor and Hollis Swink.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 2, at Gordon-Foster-Brown Funeral Home, 402 E. Tyler, Athens.
The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be sent to favorite charities.

Mrs. Richardson was born on April 6, 1924 in Cameron. She was a faithful member and prayer warrior for many years at Taylor Memorial COGIC under the leadership of Elder Floyd Taylor and later under Elder Willie Brown. She was a happy, joyful, spiritually led woman of God who was always witnessing about God to whoever came into her presence.
She was preceded in death by her son James David Richardson; daughters, Missionary Joyce Smith, Bernadette Holt and Kawana Owens.
Survivors include her husband of 61 1/2 years J.D. Richardson; sons and daughter-in-law, Jessie Harold Richardson, Roy Lee and Earline Richardson, all of Corsicana, Darron and Renee Richardson of Lancaster; daughters and son-in-law Willie Fern and Darryl Durkee of Corsicana, Christine and Roy Tallie of Mesquite, Thara Ann and Bobby Tallie of Dallas, Janice Young of Lancaster; Twenty-nine grandchildren; Sixty great grandchildren; Eight great-great grandchildren; brothers-in-law Odell Sneed of Fort Worth, Elder H.D. Haney (Annell), Lewis Haney, all of Corsicana; Sisters-in-law Mattie Lee Brown of Corsicana and Evangeline Anderson; A host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Gertrude Warren Moore passed away May 29, 2006, in Corsicana. She was born in Austin, July 9, 1915. She was a longtime member of Lighthouse Baptist Church in Garland.
She is survived by a daughter, Betty Callaway of Corsicana; granddaughters, Gail Grimes and husband Gary of Corsicana and Debbie Bourn and husband Kevin of Georgetown; great-granddaughters, Melissa Grimes of Corsicana and Kristen Bourn of Austin; great-grandsons, Eric Talley and wife Elizabeth of Corsicana and Michael Grimes and wife Carroll of Barry; great-great-grandson, Daniel Grimes of Barry; great-great-granddaughters, Mackenzie Grimes of Barry, Caroline Talley and Sydney Talley, both of Corsicana; two sisters, Margaret and husband Lovelee Lankford of Austin and May Belle Hall and husband Arlie of Vista, Calif.; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death husband, Henry; son, James H.; son-in law, Howard Callaway; grandsons, Lynn Callaway and Chuck Moore; brothers, Bernard Warren and Cecil Warren.

Leonard Conner
The Rev. Leonard C. Conner, 88, of Granbury went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, May 30, 2006, following a brief illness. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Oakwood Cemetery in Corsicana. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Wiley Funeral Home in Granbury. Until the time of his death, he was very active in his church, Southside Baptist, as well as around Granbury.
Leonard, the seventh of 11 children, was born to Sherrod and Graham (Sheets) Conner, on Oct. 1, 1917, in Roane. He grew up in that area and met his wife, Mary G. (Bassham) Conner there. He married his beloved wife on Sept. 3, 1940. They had been married for over 65 years.
Many years of Leonard’s life were spent in service to his Lord. He lived to preach God’s word. He graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, in 1958. Afterward, he pastored churches in Patricia, Texas; Wellington, Texas; Kirtland, N.M.; and in Kalamazoo, Mich. Preaching was Leonard’s passion from which he did not retire. He filled the pulpit in churches as long as he lived. Leonard was talented musically and loved playing various instruments including guitar, banjo and fiddle. He loved to sing and directed the music for church services at times.
Leonard also loved to write. He wrote may stories, the last two being written to his wife, Mary, on their 64th wedding anniversary and one to his young granddaughter, Chloe, only two months ago.
Leonard’s wife, Mary, and his three daughters, Frankie, Lyndell and Cynthia, were the delight of his heart. A legacy of 17 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren are left behind to proudly bear his Godly heritage.
Leonard was a member of Southside Baptist Church for the 6 1/2 years he lived in Granbury. He loved Brother Gary Leonard, as well as every member of the congregation. He loved the Lord and his family deeply. He had a zest and love for life and a love for people. He leaves behind many, many friends. Leonard tried his best to show the love of God in all he did and said. He led a great number of people to salvation in Christ. He will be deeply missed. Preceding Leonard in death were his parents, eight brothers and sisters, two grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Geneva; daughters and sons-in-law, Frankie and Jerry Crowe, Lyndell and Eugene Torode, all of Granbury, and Cynthia and Don Baker of Walnut Springs; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Helen Campbell of Arlington and Johnnie Deavenport of Houston.

Harold Benefield, age 96 went to be with his Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ on Wednesday, June 11, 2015. He was a member of the
First Baptist Church of Blooming Grove, Texas.
John was born on May 8, 1919 to James and Della Noblett
Benefield in Pittsburg, TX. Within the first year his family and
grandparents moved to Chillicothe, TX where they lived until he
was 18 years old. During those 18 years his grandparents, James
and Iola Pharr Noblett were very influential in John's life.
At 18 the entire family moved to Tyler, TX where he worked in
the family grocery store. It wasn't long until John saw, what he
said "was the most beautiful girl in the world and he was going
to marry her". Her name was Imogene Smith who he called Gene.
The economy was very poor so they decided that he would join the
Army. He completed all of his training and by then World War II
had begun. He was given a leave of absence before shipping out
to Germany. He and Gene decided to marry before he left.
John was sent to Germany with the 9th army, 102 infantry
division, where he was in the Battle of the Bulge. When the war
ended, his company was in charge of getting the Jews that Hitler
had imprisoned and tortured back to their families. Later in
John's life he enjoyed showing his collection of World War II
newspapers, scrapbook and his military book that was written by
an army correspondent that followed every move that his division
made. He was a very loyal patriot and loved that he had the
opportunity to serve his country.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Gene of 64 years. He was
also preceded in death by his parents James and Della Benefield
and his sister Helen Winona Benefield Keeling.
He is survived by 2 sons, Stanley Harold and John David
Benefield. Also survived by a brother, Tommy Benefield, and a
sister Frankie Benefield Cox, 4 grandchildren, 10 Great
grandchildren. One special great grandchild named Kristen Nicole
Benefield-Goad who just graduated and will be starting college
this fall.

Mrs. Doris R. Dreyfuss, 82, died Thursday, May 25, 2006 at the IOOF Nursing Home in Ennis. She was born July 14, 1923 in Blooming Grove, the daughter of Luther and Myrtle Garvin Burke. She was married to Gordon Leon Fallen, Sr. Mr. Fallen preceded her in death. She later married Jay Dreyfuss. After their marriage they lived in Corpus Christi and Fort Worth. In 1994 she moved to Ennis. She was a member of the Rosemont Christian Church in Dallas. She is survived by 3 daughters, Genevieve (Gena) Fallen Hawkins of Alma, Brenda Joyce Crim of Edwards, CO and Connie Sue Keith of Arlington; and many beloved grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Gordon Leon Fallen, Jr. and a daughter, Alecia Ann Gouge. The family will have a memorial service in her honor at a later date. June Carol Tekell of Corsicana passed away on the late evening of her 74th birthday Sunday, June 4, 2006, at Heritage Oaks Retirement Village.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Corley Funeral Home.
Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. B.F. Risinger Jr. and Dr. David Edwards officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Don Lake, James Price, Bob LeMay, Bill Roberts, Rex Peddy and Ernest Kauffman.
June was born June 4, 1932, in Houston, and married her husband Don in 1953. She was a graduate of Baylor University and taught music for
Corsicana Independent School District for several years. First Baptist Church was her church home where she was a vital part of several ministries of the church. She had a love for music and was a blessing to many through her participation in the church choir and use of her God-given gift of song.
She was preceded in death by her parents, W.E. and Elfreida Smith; and sisters, Ruth Sisson and Francis Garrett.
Survivors include her husband, Don Tekell of Corsicana; sons, Keith Tekell of Beaumont, Craig Tekell and wife Christi of Corsicana, and Victor Tekell of Houston; granddaughters, Courtney Tekell and Kristen Tekell, both of Beaumont, Ashley Tekell of Corsicana, and Haley Tekell and Emily Tekell, both of Houston; grandsons, Jonathan Tekell of Beaumont, Tyler Tekell of Corsicana, and Christian Tekell of Houston; sister, Louise Ray of Tomball; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Johnny F. Hollifield, Sr., 71, of Blooming Grove passed away Saturday, June 3, 2006 at his home.

Mr. Hollifield was born Nov. 22, 1934, in Ben Wheeler. He retired from the Texas Highway Department in Corsicana after 27 years of faithful service. He served in the U.S. Army for two years and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Blooming Grove. He enjoyed building deer stands, deer feeders and he loved hunting and his family.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Eula Hollifield, and his brother-in-law J. D. Gray.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Nevada; sister Christine Gray; mother-in-law Fern Grounds; son and daughter-in-law Lamar and Judy Blake; daughter and son-in-law Elaine and Carl Stebe; son and daughter-in-law Johnny and Jodie Hollifield, Jr.; daughter and son-in-law Yvonne and David Vinson; son and daughter-in-law Bob and Robin Blake; daughter and son-in-law Suzanne and Mike Dunaway; grandchildren Bobby and Christie Blake, Jason and Melissa Blake, Jessica and Michael Vanderpool, Greg and Denise Strebe, J. Amelia “Louise” McGilvary Knott, 84, of Streetman passed away Thursday, June 8, 2006, at Wortham Rehab Center.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home.
Services will be 4 p.m. Sunday at Griffin-Roughton Chapel with Pastor Jonathan Swanson of First Presbyterian Church in Gatesville officiating. Interment will follow at Birdston Cemetery in Streetman.

Mrs. Knott was born May 28, 1922, in Midway in Navarro County to John and Lura Kent McGilvary. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Gatesville. She grew up in Streetman where she graduated May 30, 1940. She would catch a train in Streetman to San Antonio where she went to Trinity University College, where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree and on May 22, 1944, she was certified in elementary education. She married Homer Knott on Aug. 19, 1948, in Streetman, and was married for 43 years. She had lived in Streetman, Corpus Christi, Louisiana, Odessa, Lexington, Arizona and most of her life in Gatesville. She was an elementary teacher in Corsicana, Corpus Christi and Odessa. She worked with the Texas Department of Corrections prison system where she worked at Giddings State School for Boys and Gatesville State School for Boys. She was a member of Coryell County Retired Teachers Association and Trinity University Alumni Association. She will be remembered as a loving mother to all her family. She always thought of God first, others second and herself last. She was a friend to many.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and sister-in-law Ina Knott Carroll.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, John and Patsy Knott of Streetman; grandsons, Bryan Knott and wife Kathryn of Copperas Cove and Alvin Knott of Streetman; brother and sister-in-law, Kent and Maurine McGilvary of Streetman; nephews, Hoppy McGilvary and wife Pat of Fairfield and Michael Carr of Streetman; and great-nieces, Kaci McGilvary of Fairfield and Karyn Best and husband Casey of New Braunfels.

Frankie married at an early age of 16 to Foster Breaco Hollis and had a blessed marriage of 49 years, when shortly after Foster passed away. He preceded Frankie in death, along with her parents. Frankie loved the Lord Jesus Christ and loved her home church, Navarro Mills Baptist, where she served as treasurer and also as a member of the choir. She devoted her life to her large family never missing the chance to tell each and every one of them how much she loved them.

She previously lived in Dallas where she owned her own business. She was a resident of Bloomburg for 28 years and was a member of First Baptist Church in Bloomburg. She will be dearly missed.

Mrs. Slater lived most of her life in the Mertens area and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mertens.
She was born Carmel Bell Toten on Nov. 1, 1915 to Elmer Archie Toten and Cora Lou Raley Toten. Carmel married Harold Arthur Ballew in 1933. He preceded her in death in 1991. She then married Jessie Slater who then preceded her in death.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; her two sisters, Virgie Priddy and Imogene Porter; one son, Harold E. Ballew; a granddaughter, Debbie Pearson; and a great grandson, Kevin Ballew.
Survivors include her brother and sister-in-law, E.A. (Boy) and Northera Toten of Blooming Grove; her son and daughter-in-law Buddy and Fern Ballew; her daughters and sons-in-law Pat and Dwayne Watson, and Nancy and Jim Huggins, all of Mertens; and daughter-in-law Barbara Ballew of Hillsboro; 13 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; 14 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years, George Baechtle; daughter and son-in-law, Wendy and Lynn Heugatter, and grandchildren, A.J. and Eli, of Mildred; daughter and son-in-law, Heidi and Ed Janak, and grandchildren, Jessica and Marcus, of Corsicana; daughter and son-in-law, Erika and Jacob Garrett, and grandchildren, Haden, Jake and Liesel, of West Plains, Mo.; sister, Wanda Fennel of Canton; and sister, Betty Jo Hausermann of Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Elizabeth Logan; and grandparents, Jim T. and Susie P. Taylor.
Peggy was a graduate of Corsicana High School Class of 1954. She continued her education and graduated from Scott and White Nursing School and Baylor Medical Center School of Anesthesia. She had a 40-plus career in nursing and anesthesia in the Dallas area. She was a member of First Christian Church and The Church in the Park.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 16, at Corley Funeral Chapel with the Rev. B.F. Risinger Jr. officiating.

Thelma Evelyn Muirhead Turner, 101, of Corsicana passed away Saturday, June 10, 2006. She was born Oct. 13, 1904, in Shreveport, La., the first of 11 children of Thaddeus N. and Nora Flynn Muirhead.
Grandmamma was one of the pioneer telephone operators working in Corsicana in the early 1920s. She married Lloyd R. Turner in 1924 in the original courthouse of Navarro County. They were married for 55 years until his death in 1979. Through her lifelong love of cats, she met and became a friend of Dr. Joyce Robinson to whom the family is eternally grateful. For the care and love that she received at Heritage Oaks Retirement Village and also to the loving care of Dr. Kent Rogers, her family is deeply appreciative.
She was preceded in death by Dewey Muirhead, Charles Barnett Muirhead, Thad Laverne Muirhead, Freddie Halbert Muirhead and her sister Elizabeth Muirhead Shaw. She is survived by her brother Eddie Muirhead of Dallas and sisters Estelle Lively of Corsicana, Lydia Martin and Adoree Price, both of Wichita Falls, a daughter Sally and her husband John Stitt of Barry, granddaughter Gretchen E. and her husband Richard H. Adams Jr. and their children Drew P. and Madeleine G. of Keller.
The graveside service was held the morning of June 13 at Oakwood Cemetery with the Rev. Mike Alexander officiating.

She was loved by anyone she met and knew, and was beloved and cherished by her family and close friends.

CORSICANA, Texas - Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Caney Baptist Church for Clester L. Housley, 91, of Corsicana, formerly of Lamar County, who died June 12, 2006, in Corsicana.
Burial will be in Caney Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Housley was a retail grocery merchant and a member of Caney Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Sones Housley, and a grandson, Hilton L. Housley Jr.
Survivors include three sons, Hilton Lavon Housley Sr. of Petal, Jarrell L. Housley of Liberty, Texas, and Harold L. Housley of Corsicana; a daughter, Lawana H. Giddings of Okmulgee, Okla.; three brothers, Darnell Housley of Houston, Texas, Joe Earl Housley of Lumberton and Troy Housley of Purvis; 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Caney Baptist Church.
Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home in Hattiesburg is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Crabb was preceded in death by her Husband, Dr. Madison Crabb, and a Son-in-Law, Sonny Simons. She is survived by her Daughter, Kitty Joyce Simons of Midland, TX., Son & Daughter-in-Law, Dr. Thomas M. & Ann Crabb of Granbury, TX., Granddaughter & Husband, Sarah & Scott Switzer of Granbury, TX., Great Granddaughter, Zoie Ann'Elizabeth Switzer of Granbury, TX., Sister, Joyce Vanhorn of Tyler, TX., and numerous nieces & nephews.
Mary Dee Dickinson
Mary Dee Dickinson, age 83 of Lancaster, died Saturday, June 10, 2006, in Dallas, Texas. She was born June 23, 1922, in Navarro County, Texas. Mary Dee dedicated her life to the Lord and His service at an early age and was an active member of Gloryland Church where she served as secretary and bookkeeper for many years. In her younger years, she was an avid Sunday School teacher and was a positive influence on hundreds of students who passed through her classroom. She lived her life with class and dignity up until the very end, always putting others before herself. She was truly loved by many and will never be forgotten.
She is survived by her brothers, Jerry Dickinson and his wife Sharon of Lancaster, Lee Dickinson and his wife Patsy of Waxahachie; Joe Dickinson and his wife Janis of Red Oak; numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lonnie Lee and Ethel Mae Dickinson; brothers, Eddie Dwain Dickinson and Donnie Ray Dickinson; sister, Alice Marie Mayfield.
Funeral service will be 11:00 am, Tuesday, June 13, 2006, at Gloryland Church, 1331 S. Beckley, DeSoto, TX 75115, with Rev. Herb Corpany, Rev. Ed Mayfield and Jeff Dickinson officiating. Interment will follow in the Maypearl Cemetery. Jeff Dickinson, Mike Dickinson, David Dickinson, Jim Dyer, Curtis Mayfield and Mel Woods will serve as pallbearers.
Family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 to 8 at the Boze-Mitchell-McKibbin Funeral Home.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Boze-Mitchell-McKibbin Funeral Home in Waxahachie.

James Merlin Skaggs 71 of Richland, Texas passed away Monday June 12, 2006 in Navarro County. Mr. Skaggs was born June 26, 1934 in Columbus Kansas.
Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday June 15, 2006 at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.

Jo Ann Williams
Jo Ann Williams, a loving wife, mother and friend, died Wednesday, June 14, 2006, at Baylor Hospital in Dallas. She was born Nov.4, 1928 in Emhouse, the daughter of Walter and Mary Davis Johnson. Jo Ann graduated from Emhouse High School 1946. On June 4, 1947 she married Charles Williams and in 1950 they moved to Ennis. She was the secretary of the Williams Co. and a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church for over fifty years. Jo Ann is survived by her husband, Charles; two sons, Rick Williams and his wife, Cindi and Mike Williams all of Dallas; a daughter and her husband, Claudia and Joe Muirhead of Ennis; six grandchildren, Barry Williams, Jr., Zack Williams, Jaclyn Caldwell, Braz
Williams, Mica Muirhead and Scott Muirhead; one great grandchild, Gavin Caldwell. She was preceded in death by a son, Barry Williams, Sr. on March 17, 2006, a brother, "Red" Clifton Johnson and a sister, Jeannie Bell. Jo Ann loved the Lord with all her heart and was His dedicated servant teaching Sunday School and providing love and support to generations of young people. Jo Ann loved her home and opened it to everyone (Hebrews 13:2). One of her favorite Bible verses was Proverbs 3:5&6. A celebration of her life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the sanctuary of Tabernacle Baptist Church with C. Douglas White officiating. Interment will follow in Myrtle Cemetery under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Jo Ann Williams
Jo Ann Williams, 77, died Wednesday, June 14, 2006, at Baylor Hospital in Dallas.
She was born Nov. 4, 1928, in Emhouse, the daughter of Walter and Mary Davis Johnson. She was reared in the Emhouse area where she attended school. On June 4, 1947, she was married to Charles Williams. After their marriage, they lived in Texas, moving to Ennis in 1950. She was the co-owner of Williams Company and a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Charles; two sons, Mike Williams and Rick Williams and his wife Cindi, all of Dallas; a daughter and her husband, Claudie and Joe Muirhead of Ennis; six grandchildren, Barry Williams Jr., Zach Williams, Jacklyn and her husband Chad Caldwell, Braz Williams, Mila Muirhead and Scott Muirhead; and one great-grandchild, Gavin Caldwell. She was preceded in death by a son, Barry Williams Sr., on March 17, 2006; a brother, “Red” Clifton Johnson; and a sister, Jeannie Bell.
