Three killed in early morning wreck on Camp Wanica road

It was two days before school started for 2006 that the group of students and former students took off for the lake, to play a little football and goof off after their shifts at the various restaurants. But the night ended tragically when two of the three cars full of teenagers and young adults crashed on FM 637, informally known as Camp Wanica Road, in southeastern Navarro County, killing three.

Laura Suaste, 18, who had graduated from Dawson High School just two months earlier; Benjamin Mora, 16, of Corsicana High; and Antonio Moreno, 20, of Lee School of Choice, died in the early morning car wreck Aug. 8.

The tragic incident cast a shadow over the first weeks of school, especially in the small Dawson high school, where Suaste had been a student leader. She was remembered at Dawson’s 2006 Homecoming, where the former homecoming queen was supposed to have crowned her successor.

A Department of Public Safety report put the blame for the wreck on excessive speed and unsafe driving, but no charges have been filed in the case.
