He is survived by his mother, Brenda Lee Cheshier, of Frost; father, Chris Barbee, of Corsicana; three brothers, Kevin Lee, Justin Lee and Dustin Lee, all of Frost; and grandparents, Buddy and Barbara Cheshier, of Frost, Diane Barbee, of Corsicana, and Hershel Barbee, of Arizona.

McGaugh was born Jan 26, 1907, in Richland. He was a retired superintendent for Pierce Oil Company in El Campo. He was a Master Mason and past Worshipful Master of the El Campo Masonic Lodge.

She is survived by one sister, Ida Mae Odum, of Sylycauga, Ala.; and one niece, Wilda Odum Roy, of The Colony, Texas.

He was born in Dawson and graduated from Dawson High School in 1976.

Survivors include his wife, Lisa, of Cleveland; parents, Peter and Ruth Cook of Cleveland; one sister, Sandy Howard of Athens; one grandmother, Sulleta French, of Dawson; and three nephews.

Mrs. Nelson was born March 7, 1896, in Penelope, Texas, and was a resident of Dawson since 1899.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William M. Nelson, and one daughter, Bessie Jo Nelson.
Survivors include one daughter, Marjorie Currey, of Lafayette La.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She had been a Dawson resident since 1899, and was a former school teacher for several years in Central Texas. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Dawson.  She attended T.W.C. in Fort Worth. She was preceded in death by her husband, William M. Nelson, and a daughter, Bessie Jo Nelson.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Currey of Lafayette, La.; two grand-children, two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Wilmer Hale, Dieter Meins, Chad McManus, David Nelson Currey, Marion Hampton, Conrad Newton, and Neil Clark.

He was born May 21, 1907 in Navarro County and was a lifelong resident of Navarro County. He was a retired dispatcher for Texas Power and Light, and was a member of First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Nutt on Sept. 17, 1980.
Survivors include two sons, Duane Nutt of Plano, and Jimmy Nutt of Pasadena; two daughters, Sibyl Faye Keating of Coolidge, and Stella Persell of Richardson; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, John W. Nutt of Longview, and Rufus Nutt of Hutchins; two sisters, Marguerite Dowd of Corsicana, and Mariella Ellington of Chatfield; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Burial will be at 2 p.m. in Laurel Land Cemetery in Fort Worth.
Wren was born May 11, 1927 in Dawson and lived in Dawson for many years. She worked for over 40 years at the Justin Boot Company in Fort Worth where she retired in 1987. She was a Baptist.
Survivors include one son, Michael David Wren of Silver City, TX.; her mother, Mrs. Hallie Harris, of Dawson; two brothers, James Harris of Teague and Teddy Harris of Waxahachie; two sisters, Genice Hamilton of Fort Worth and Mamie Lee Kennedy of Birmingham, Ala.; and three grandchildren.

W. F. Holloway, 78, of Petersburg, Texas, died Jan. 30, 1989, in Lubbock General Hospital.
Services were Thursday, Feb. 2, 1989. Burial was in Petersburg Cemetery under the direction of Lemons Funeral Home in Plainview.
A native of Corsicana, he moved to Petersburg in 1929. He married Vera McDaniel on July 12, 1931, and played baseball for the Lubbock Hubbers in the West Texas/New Mexico League from 1929 to 1947.
He was a retired farmer and a member of the Church of Christ. He was past president of the West Texas Duroc Breeders Association, the Hale County 4-H, the Hale County Stock Show, the Petersburg School Board and the Petersburg Co-Op Gin Board of Directors.
He is survived by his wife, Vera Holloway, of Petersburg; three sons, Delbert Joe Holloway, of Wray, Colo., Billy Bob Holloway, of Bowie, Texas, and Jessie Lee Holloway, of Tucumcari, NM.; 11 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Alton Holloway, of Plainview, Ernest Holloway, of Midland, and Murl Holloway, of Lubbock; and one sister, Carrie Bell Holloway, of Plainview.

Mrs. Jewel Henson Gibson, 84, of Corsicana, died Feb 7, 1989 at Navarro Regional Hospital.
She was an author, educator and actively involved in the community. She was born in Bald Prairie and was raised in Robertson County.
Services will be 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. B. F. Risinger Jr. and the Rev. Larry Hodges officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of Corley Funeral Home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Felix A. Gibson.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. Louis E. Gibson of Corsicana, and Frank A. Gibson of Jonah; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Billie Thum of New Mexico.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Mike Gibson, Dr. Pat Gibson, Cameron Hodges, and Shannon Hodges, Duncan Clowe, Clyde Gibson, and Harry A. Clowe Jr.

Daily Sun columnist Gibson dies Tuesday

Mrs. Jewel Henson Gibson, a noted author, educator and long time columnist for the Daily Sun died Tuesday afternoon at Navarro Regional Hospital at the age of 84.

Mrs. Gibson was born in Bald Prairie July 1, 1904 and grew up in Robertson County. She married Felix Adair Gibson Feb. 27, 1922. They had two sons, Dr. Louis E. Gibson and Frank A. Gibson.

After graduating from high school, Mrs. Gibson attended Westminster College in Tehuacana and the University of Mary Hardin Baylor, Belton. She later attended Sam Houston State University where she received a master's degree.

Mrs. Gibson taught creative writing for about 10 years at SHSU in Huntsville. She retired in 1970. She and her husband then moved to Corsicana.

Readers of the Daily Sun looked forward to the profiles of local citizens written by Mrs. Gibson that appeared weekly in Sunday's Tempo section.

Daily Sun Publisher Wilson Griffin praised Mrs. Gibson for the contributions she made to the newspaper and the community.

"She was well-loved by the commmunity and will be greatly missed by everyone, expecially our readers who looked forward to her columns,"
Griffin said.

She at one time wrote for the Houston Chronicle and other newspapers. She also wrote books for Random House, including Joshua Beene and God which was later produced as a play in collaboration with Hal Lewis and Cliff Sage at the Dallas Thester Center. Actor Burl Ives had the staring role.

She authored Texas Black Gold, an oilfield novel based on her husband's oilfield experiences as a roughneck and a driller. It was also publiched by Random House.

Mrs. Gibson wrote numerous plays, including "Bran in the Econo Class,"
produced at Trinity University in San Antonio. She wrote the play, "Creep Past the Mountain Lion." which was produced at Dallas Theater Center. The late Rex Ingram, a famous black actor and Corsicana native was in the lead role.

She also wrote the play "Miss Ney," which was based on the life of Elisabet Ney, an early American Texas Sculptor. It was produced at Trinity University and elsewhere. She wrote "Zealots of Masada," the story of 900 Jewish people who committed suicide on a mountain top. It was produced in numerous places including Corsicana and Baylor. She wrote over 300 articles profiling citizens in the community for the Daily Sun.

Mrs. Gibson was a member of the Texas Institute of Letters, an academic writers organization, and received numerous awards from the state and different writer's guilds.

Oct. 15, 1988 wa declared Jewel Gibson Day in Corsicana. That night Navarro Council of the Arts Special Projects Chairman Gioia Keeney announced the establishment of a Jewel Gibson Literary Fund, which will provide the council with opportunities to bring outstanding individuals in the literary field to Corsicana. This year's Jewel Gibson literary event is scheduled for June 9 and 10.

When making the tribute to Mrs. Gibson, Mrs. Keeney said, "Jewel's empathy for people and her keen insight into their feelings add an extra dimension to her writing not all authors have.

WINKLER—Murl Anderson, 64, postmaster and grocery store operator for 41 years, died early Monday in a Houston hospital. He was a Mason, a Shriner, and a member of Midway Baptist Church near Winkler.

Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Corley Funeral Chapel, with burial to be in the Midway Cemetery.

The Rev. Hubert McKissack and Dr. David King will officiate.

Survivors include his widow; two daughters, Mrs. Phill Alexander and Mrs. Lee Goodman, both of Pasadena; four grandchildren, and one nephew, Bill Simpson, Houston.

Pallbearers will be Charles Allen, Byford Cook, Hugh B. Fouryt, Rob Pillans, H. L. Rash, Gene Phaup, Frank Merrell and Roddy Ferguson.

Funeral services for W. S. (Hatchet) Barker, 53 fatally injured early Monday in an auto accident on U. S. Highway 75 north of Ennis, were held from the St. Elmo church Tuesday at 2 p.m. with burial in the St. Elmo Cemetery.

The rites were conducted by Rev. L. G. Lee, Baptist minister, Streetman, and Rev. Billy Grimes, Baptist minister.

Barker an employe of the Zimoco Oil Company at Navarro, was driving a 1957 Chevrolet that struck the rear of a Kenworth refrigerator truck, driven by Wilbur A. Underwood of Garland.

Highway Patrolman Billy Lamb was quoted as saying Barker apparently went to sleep and his demolished car struck the rear of the refrigerator truck which was undamaged, Underwood was uninjured. Barker died a short time later in the Ennis Municipal hospital.

Barker was a native of Winkler.

Surviving are his wife, two sons, Walla and James, and a daughter, Shirley Frances Barker, all of Dallas; three brothers, Jake Barker, Winkler; Ray and Ellis Barker, both of Dallas; eight sisters, Mrs. Ruby Coker, Mrs. Modine Robinson and Mrs. Florence Coker all of Eureka; Mrs. Hazel Grayson, Mrs. Ann Lodhen and Mrs. Faye Moody all of Dallas; Mrs. Anna Beth Haden, Turnertown, and Miss Sybil Barker, Mexia, and a grandson and other relatives.

Pallbearers were F. L. Herrin, George Webb, Fred Gullett, T. C. Dillard, Robert Robinson, J. C. Howard and P. W. Horn.

Luther L. (Coon) Johnson, 71, retired government trapper, died Thursday morning at his home, 1015 West Tenth avenue.

Native of Ardmore, Okla., he had resided at Winkler for 20 years before moving to Corsicana 20 years ago.

Surviving are his wife of Corsicana; a son, L. H. Johnson, Corsicana; four daughters, Mrs. Doyle Coley and Mrs. Jettie Marr, both of Corsicana; Mrs. Ruby Minze, Winkler, and Mrs. Jewell Cooper, Fort Worth; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the St. Elmo church with burial in the St Elmo Cemetery, but arrangements were incomplete early Thursday afternoon.

The rites will be conducted by Rev. Jim Gayle, pastor of the Calvary Baptist church, and Rev. Leonard Lee, Streetman Baptist minister.

John Thomas Massey, 64, of Winkler, died in the Freestone County Memorial Hospital at Fairfield Saturday. He was a farmer and a stockman and a veteran of World War I.

Mrs. Maggie Richardson, 75, native of Navarro county, died Monday in Dallas. She was a resident of Mesquite and a member of the Highland Park Baptist church.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. At Corley's Chapel with Rev. Harold Pitts of Dallas officiating, assisted by Rev. O. E. Permenter of Corsicana. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery.

Mrs. Sidney Mae Sanders, 97, died Saturday, March 10, 2007, at the LifeCare Hospital in Dallas. She was born Dec. 30, 1909 in Shelbyville, AL, the daughter of Sidney A. and Annie Mae Henley Turner. She was reared in Ennis and Corsicana where she attended school. She was married to Frank Sanders. She was employed as a seamstress for Donovan-Galvani and also worked as the office manager for her husband’s plumbing business, Frank Sanders Plumbing. Mr. Sanders preceded her in death. She was a lifetime member of the Rebekah Lodge and a charter member of the Baylor Baptist Church. She is survived by a daughter and her husband, Gelene and Hershel Lester of Ennis; two children she raised as her own, John Flippen of Ennis and Pamela Wooldridge of The Woodlands; three grandchildren, Hershel Lester, III of Key West, FL, Tina Teza of Dallas and Rachael Ferguson of Montgomery, TX; and 7 great grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Myrtle Cemetery with Rev. Richard Moody and Dr. Larry Jinks officiating under the direction of J.E. Keever Mortuary. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday.

NOTES: Oscar and Frederick Ruffini, two Genoese brothers, designed many Texas public buildings. Frederick (b.1851) arrived in Austin in 1877. He was the architect of 19th century courthouses in Henderson, Longview, Georgetown and Corsicana. He died during an 1885 epidemic in Austin. Oscar (b.1858) settled in San Angelo and was the architect for several West Texas courthouses including those in Concho, Mills, Sutton, Sterling and Crockett counties. He died in San Angelo in 1957.

Well, you know what they say…"You can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family." As much as I never wanted to be my cousin, Ray, I sure did want to be like him a lot!

He was simply my idol. Whenever we traveled to Corsicana for a visit, he was the one I wanted most to see. He was a solidly built, fun-loving and welcoming sight. When we arrived in town, Ray would sweep me up, literally, and make over me like I was his one and only buddy.

A high school football star, taking a toss from him in the front yard was like taking a spiral from Bart Starr himself. He knew everybody in town, and everyone seemed to share my adoration of him. I wanted cowboy boots just like his, a felt Stetson just like his. And when he fell in love with the high school cheerleader…well, I wanted one of those, too.

Ray and Linda married young, and life soon made an attempt to morph my teenage idol into a husband and father. But such domestic husbandry didn't set that well with my cousin, who seemed to have been gifted with more wild oats than any one man should ever possess. One day after sowing those oats, Ray returned home to his Barbie wife and Barbie daughter only to find his house empty, save a single plate, spoon, knife, and fork. Linda soon found her whirlw i n d romance with the Casanova of Corsicana a little too bewildering, even for an ex-cheerleader like herself. She had cleaned his plow; it was over.

What ensued for my dear cousin was about forty years of tragic regret. There were many endless nights with spurs on the bar, swirling his Seagrams and mumbling about how he'd let "the one" get away. But somewhere between these periods of wandering woes, Ray managed to pull big rigs across the country, marry another, no-soenamored, hometown girl, and accrue a nice little pension from the Teamsters. When his time finally came, and Ray climbed upon his riding lawnmower and killed over with a coronary, he had made that great human journey from being a teenage idol to becoming a regular, middle-aged anybody.

We sat with his widow in the family box at the hometown funeral home as a couple of one-time high school football players with arthritic knees made their way to peer into the casket at their fallen star. And then she walked in, his one and only. Heads turned and whispers traveled from pew to pew as Linda, looking as sharp as Ray's best memory of her, clicked her high heels up to his pine box. There was a sideways sneer toward his poor widow,who squirmed and seethed as she recalled every night she had put her forlorn Ray to bed with Linda on his weary mind.

We held our breath all through the service and to the hilltop cemetery outside of town. The old town preacher was two-thirds through the 23rd Psalm when the poor widow just couldn't take it anymore. As a strange breeze blew across the Texas prairie and under the funeral parlor tent, she tore from her folding chair and jumped on Linda's tight satin dress.

Mourners politely stepped aside as the two women rolled over carnation sprays and red Texas clay hilled up next to Ray's final resting place. The confused reverend quickly replaced his crocheted bookmark, closed the Old Testament, and said a final Amen as a string of curse words arose from the entangled pair struggling dangerously close to the casket.

When there were no more high heels to break and no more hairdos to mangle, the girls were reluctantly separated. As we returned to our cars, I took one last look at Ray's pine box. My idol! It seemed a just tribute, I mused, for the Casanova of Corsicana to go out with two women fighting over him.

She was born Aug. 20, 1926 in Emmett. She married Troy Connor May 30, 1946 in Emmett. She was a member of the Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

Mrs. Connor was preceded in death by her father, Edward Stroder and mother, Hazel Stroder.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Troy Connor of Emmett; sons and daughter-in-law Gary and Ann Connor; granddaughter Amy Myhand and her husband Shayne, and their two sons Travis and Cole of Hutto; and a grandson, Matt Connor of San Marcos.

Jason Graham Walker, 37, of Carrollton passed away following complications from heart surgery with his family at his side at 11:51 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, 2007.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2007, at Machaira Bible Church, 13375 N. Stemmons Frwy., Suite 430, Farmers Branch, with the Rev. David Roseland officiating. Visitation with family and friends will follow the service.

Jason was born Friday, June 27, 1969, in Greenville to Judith and Don Walker. He graduated from Corsicana High School in 1988 and went on to attend classes at Navarro College. As a youth he was active in sports of baseball, swimming and football. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America attaining the rank of Life Scout and recipient of the Order of the Arrow. He loved working on old cars and especially had a fondness for dogs.

He is survived by his daughter, Kathrine Ann Walker of Midlothian; parents, Don and Judith Walker of Carrollton; sisters, Wendi Walker Green and husband Ray of Fairfield and Sandra Walker Emmons and husband Steve of Garland; nephews, Jeremy Green and wife Erin of Waxahachie and Daniel Baxley of Montgomery; nieces, Anika Emmons and Sarah Emmons of Garland; and grandmother, Pauline Walker of Carrollton.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marde Walker; grandparents, Raney and Frances Graham and Don Walker Sr.

Mrs. McNally died peacefully at home on Monday, March 26, 2007. She was the daughter of Harriet and William Lorimer of Dundee, Scotland. Mrs. McNally was born March 17, 1908, in Kansas City, Mo. Her family moved to Dallas and later Corsicana, where she met Frank McNally, one of the early pioneers in Corsicana’s oil industry. Married in 1929, Frank and Dorothy enjoyed 59 wonderful years of marriage. In 1935, Mr. and Mrs. McNally moved to Longview.

Mrs. McNally was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; daughter, Mary McNally Murphy; grandson, Frank Murphy; grandson, Michael Murphy; granddaughter, Dorothy Murphy; and her brother, Jimmy Lorimer Sr.

During World War II, Mrs. McNally was the leader of the Gray Ladies Organization at the U.S. Army’s Harman General Hospital in Longview. An avid golfer, she was the East Texas State Women’s Golf champion for many years and a member of the Pinecrest Country Club. She was also a former president of the Longview Chapter of the Junior League, serving the community for many years as an active member of the league. Dorothy was a member of First United Methodist Church of Longview.

Survivors include her daughter Mary’s husband, John Murphy of Longview; granddaughter, Linda Murphy and husband Gerard Nash of Longview and Washington, D.C.; and one nephew, Jimmy Lorimer Jr. of Dallas.

The family wishes to specifically thank her doctors and the many caregivers that tended to Mrs. McNally’s needs during her long illness, especially Ms. Marcie Alsobrooks, Ms. Constance Ceja, Ms. Diana Reber, Mrs. Lucy Young, Ms. Sheila Isaac, and Ms. Brenda Williams.

Earline Perry Walther went to be with the Lord on March,6th,2007. She was a wonderful wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend. She had a servant's heart, and was eternally optimistic. She loved Jesus first, her family second, and herself last. Always happy she met each day with a positive attitude. She uplifted others, and loved unconditionally. She touched the lives of everyone she came in contact with, and will be missed by many. Born on April 23, 1923 in Corsicana, TX to Ethel Stanton Perry and Dorsey Denman Perry. She moved to Beaumont, TX at a young age, where she attended schools graduating from Beaumont High in 1940. On Nov.30 1944 she married Winston B. Walther at the First Baptist Church, Beaumont. There, they were active members and served in the youth department for many years. During her adult life she worked as a bookkeeper and secretary for various employers including, Mobil Chemical. After working for 10 years with the State of TX. Health and Human Services Department she retired in 1988 and she and her husband moved to Austin. Upon moving, she joined Cypress Creek Baptist Church and was an active member during the developing years. Later she became a member of Great Hills Baptist Church where she sang in the senior choir, helped in the food preparation for church functions, and worked with children in Sunday School. Her favorite pastimes were playing bridge, traveling, and taking care of her family and grandchildren. Earline is preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Winston B. Walther, 2 brothers, Dorsey Perry, and Bobby John Perry, and her parents. She leaves two daughters and one son, Terri Walther-Price and her husband Curtis Price of Cedar Park, TX; Carolyn Chaddrick and her husband Bob Chaddrick of Sugar Land, TX; and Randall Walther and his wife Catherine Carver of Fredericksburg, VA. She is also survived by one sister, Gwen Harper of Nacogdoches, TX., 6 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday March, 10th at Great Hills Baptist Church 10500 Jollyville Rd. Austin, TX. 78759. She was born Dec. 30, 1970 in Corsicana, the daughter of William David and Linda Hollingsworth Buchanan. She was reared in Ennis, graduating from Ennis High School in 1989. On March 30, 1996 she was married to Glen Archer. After their marriage they lived in Bardwell. She worked as a loan processor for LandAmerica for three years.
She is survived by her husband, Glen, of Bardwell; a daughter, Cheyenne Archer of Bardwell; her mother, Linda Buchanan of Bardwell; a step-father, Carroll Arnett of Bardwell; a step-mother, Joyce Buchanan of Bardwell; a brother, Billy James Buchanan of Bardwell; a sister and her husband, Charlotte and Billy Rios of Bardwell; parents-in-law, Darrel and Lena May of Elkhart; a sister-in-law and her husband, Lori and Kevin Shirley of Tyler; two nieces, Linda Rios of Bardwell and Josie Brogdon of Waxahachie; and two nephews, Zachary Rios of Bardwell and Justin Brogdon of Tyler. Eddie Davis, Ponca City, OK resident, died March 15, 2007 at Ponca City Medical Center. He was 87. Samuel E. Davis, the son of Isom Bruce and Marie Orange (Hulse) Davis was born on Dec. 23, 1919 in Newkirk, OK.
He obtained his early education from Newkirk Schools, where he graduated from high school. After high school, Davis served in the United States Army. He returned to make his home in Ponca City.
On Feb. 6, 1943, he was united in marriage to Leona Hall in Corsicana, TX. She preceded him in death in 1992. He married Fran Bogert in Ponca City on Jan. 20, 1995.
Davis was an avid Oklahoma State fan. He also enjoyed playing bridge and working crossword puzzles. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, the Elks Lodge, the Lions Club, Tippers Club and the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Fran, of the home; one daughter, Virginia Boyd, Valley Center, KS; two sons, Rev. Bruce Davis, Kingston, OK, and Kenneth Davis, Irving, TX; step-daughters, Vickie Peckenpaugh, Paula Holland, Gwen Dickson and Catherine Bogert; grandchildren, Chris Boyd, Jessalyn Basta, Trace Moore, Meghan Davis, Michael Davis, Adam Dickson, Amanda Dickson, Cedar Torres, Esther Ivie, Nora McDougal and Maggie Peckenpaugh.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Leona, and three sisters, Lucille Woodruff, Lillian Gardner and Gladys Dautrich.
A service was held March 19, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tom Howard, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the Odd Fellows Cemetery under the direction of Trout Funeral Home and Crematory.

Vernon Roloff, 86, of Dawson passed away Saturday, March 24, 2007 at a Corsicana nursing home.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. today at Wade Funeral Home Chapel in Hubbard with Margaret McLain officiating. Interment will follow in Dawson Cemetery.

Mr. Roloff was born Dec. 20, 1920 in Dawson to Rudolph John and Winnie (Sawyer) Roloff. He later lived in Galveston County and the Texas City area, where he worked as a heavy equipment operator for Mainland Construction from 1956 to 1987, when he moved back to Dawson.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Valerie Lewis Roloff in 1947, and his second wife, Lucy McCulloch Roloff in 2000; brothers Ervin Roloff and Clyde Roloff; and sister Mary McLain.

Survivors include sons Rudy Roloff and wife Gwen of Santa Fe, and Ben Roloff and wife Trish of Augusta, Kan.; daughter Brenda Hollan of Dawson; sisters Opal Hillis and husband Jake of Dawson, and Margie Roloff of Corsicana; 10 grandchildren Valarie Stewart, Ronnie Pennington, Mark Roloff, Hallie Roloff, Robert Hurt, Cody Roloff, Savannah Roloff, Ben Roloff Jr., Darla Espinoza and Steve Hollan; 11 great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.

Pauline Hawkins

Pauline Hawkins began her walk with the Lord on March 24, 2007 at the age of 104.

Pauline was born on March 7, 1903 in Re, Texas to John and Effie Stroder, the youngest of five children. In 1926, she married Carey Hawkins in Mexia and in that same year moved to Wink. They were blessed with two children, a daughter June and a son Glenn. After her husband died in 1939, Pauline moved to Corsicana and worked for the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Service for 29 years. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Corsicana. Pauline left Corsicana in 1999 to spend time with her son in Fredricksburg and daughter in Fort Worth. In her final few years, Pauline made her home at Stonegate Nursing Center in Fort Worth, where she was loved and cared for deeply by the staff and residents.

Born the year the Wright brothers made the first airplane flight, Pauline was witness to many events in history. She remembered seeing her first car and airplane, saw 18 United States presidents take office, and stayed up late in 1969 to watch Neil Armstrong walk on the moon.

Pauline was known to most as “Granny” and was the foundation of a large and loving family. Widowed at an early age, Pauline raised two children, instilling in them the importance of honesty, integrity and faith. She lovingly cared for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and left each of them with a lifetime of memories to cherish.

Pauline is survived by her daughter June Terry and husband Bill of Fort Worth; son Glenn Hawkins and wife Joetta of Fredricksburg; grandsons Eldon Glenn Hawkins and wife Lucy of Vancouver, Canada, Bill Terry and wife Cheri of Bastrop, and Don Terry and Sara Davenport of Fort Worth; granddaughters Teresa Hawkins of Fredricksburg, Kristi Holt and husband Jay of Benbrook, Karey LeBlanc and husband Charles of Bastrop, and Laurie Hawkins of San Antonio; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces, nephews, friends who will miss her deeply.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today at Corley Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Jeff Griffin officiating. Interment will follow in Hopewell Cemetery.

Douglas Neal Hewett

Douglas Neal Hewett, 65, passed away peacefully at his farm in Barry on March 23, 2007 after a three and a half year battle with metastic prostate cancer.

He was born in Lawton, Okla. on Oct. 29, 1941 to Arthur Neal Hewett and Davene Douglas. He grew up in San Antonio and graduated from MacArthur High School in 1960. He was in the Corps of Cadets and a 1964 graduate of Texas A&M University with a degree in Zoology. A veteran captain in the United State Air Force, he served as an instructor pilot at Reese Air Force Base in Lubbock. He joined Delta Airlines, retiring as a captain on the MD-11 in 1999 after 28 years of service. In 1981 he established Hewett Orchard and Ranch where he developed his organic pecan and cattle business. Residing in both Corsicana and on his farm in Barry, he was a member of Corsicana’s Believers Bible Church for many years. Among his many interests, he became a ski instructor at Copper Mountain in Colorado, where he also enjoyed his carpentry skills remodeling his home in Dillon. A man of many interested talents during his life, he had been a trumpet player, pole vaulter, runner, outdoor enthusiast, hunter, cyclist, skier, scuba diver, country western dancer, builder and craftsman, gardener and enjoyed playing his harmonica and steel guitar.

He is survived by his first ex-wife, Joan E. Mather Hewett and their only daughter Holly Grace Hewett Bond and her husband W. Gregory Bond; and his second ex-wife Jhan Deaver Hewett.

Family will receive friends Friday, March 30, 2007 at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home in Corsicana from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 31, 2007 at 1 p.m. in the chapel at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home. “To everything there is a season, a time to be born ...”

Deacon Fisher Johnson Sr. was born in Henderson County (the Moore Station Community) on March 19, 1918 to the parentage of John Tom Johnson and Ida Johnson. He was reared in a large family with several sisters and brothers. Here began his journey of being a family man. Because of love for family, he was instrumental in starting over 35 years ago the annual “Johnson Family Reunion.” Until his illness in 2005, he was sure to be at every reunion, whether in Florida or Arizona.

He met and married Miss Juanita McGraw. They were blessed with 11 children. Their union lasted over 60 years until her home going. He could be seen daily going to the nursing facility to visit with her. This continued for over three years. Five children preceded him in death; two premature infants, Elder Johnny K. Johnson Sr., Margie M. Cummings and Jacqueline Johnson.

“Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth. ... Live, love, work with a will.”

Fisher Johnson accepted Christ at an early age and began his faithful service to God. At the age of 16, he was ordained as a deacon. For 73 years, he fulfilled God’s calling upon his life. He exhibited dedicated and faithful service under the late Superintendent P.R. Renfro at Renfro Chapel. When Superintendent Renfro was called home, his dedication and devotion to God did not falter. He continued to serve faithfully in the office of a deacon under several other pastors called to lead Renfro Chapel. In September of 1970, his son Elder J.K. Johnson answered the call to pastor South 12th Street Church of God in Christ. Deacon Johnson and his wife transferred their membership to South 12th Street Church of God in Christ. His valiant and faithful service continued. Elder J.K. Johnson was called home in January of 1971 as the result of a car accident. Even though the church was without its human leader, it held on to the vision of the now deceased leader of erecting a sanctuary for the Lord. Elder A.Z. Johnson was called to pastor South 12th Street Church of God in Christ and Deacon Fisher Johnson continued to faithfully serve. They, along with the members, were able to erect the present facility in 1974. The church was renamed in memory of Elder J.K. Johnson to “Johnson Memorial Church of God in Christ.” His dedication to God and the church remained under the leadership of Elder J.W. McCrary when he was called to pastor Johnson Memorial. In August of 1990, Elder Joseph Johnson Sr. was appointed pastor of Johnson Memorial Church of God in Christ. Deacon Johnson’s commitment to under gird and support the church and its leader never failed. The scripture declares “Be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the works of the Lord.” Fisher Johnson Sr. served as the Sunday School Superintendent and sometimes would provide the music by playing the piano for various church services. The life he lived gave testimony to his generous nature. Not only did he labor at his local church, but every church he attended, he served with distinction. He loved receiving the offering. He demonstrated “... cheerful giver.”

His work, service and labor extended far into the community, his home, and family. As a young man he provided for his family by working at Bethlehem Steel. He furthered his working career by serving as a cemetery caretaker of Woodland Cemetery for the City of Corsicana until his retirement. He provided grave services to many local funeral homes. His quick wit and sense of humor endeared him to many families throughout the years. He was an excellent hunter and fisherman. Many will remember the rabbits and fish provided by Fisher Johnson Sr.

Deacon Fisher Johnson Sr., 89, was summoned from labor to reward at noon Sunday, March 25, 2007 at Navarro Regional Hospital.

Celebration of life service will be 6 p.m. today at Johnson Memorial Church of Christ in God. Services will be 12:30 p.m. Monday at Lifeline Fellowship Family Church with Superintendent Elijah Baptist officiating. Interment will follow at Woodland Cemetery.

Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted. Matthew 5:4.

Frances Mitchell of Frost and formerly of Fort Worth passed away Saturday, March 24, 2007 in Hillsboro at the age of 87 years. She was born on June 19, 1919 to Frank and Minnie Hundt in Fort Worth. Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Mitchell. Frances and Ralph owned a grocery store in Everman for a number of years.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Marcia and Dwain Lewis of Frost; grandchildren Justin and Susan Lewis, Lynne and Jason Coker, and Dustin and Tina Lewis; and great-grandchildren Candace Lewis, Emily and Hallie Coker, and Caleb Lewis.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Faith Lutheran Church in Corsicana, with graveside services at 2 p.m. in Everman Cemetery in Everman. Visitation will be 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church prior to services.

She was born July 26, 1929 to Fred A. Nutt and Beatrice Crouch Nutt at Lake Halbert in Navarro County. She was a retired LVN. She had worked at the old Memorial Hospital in Corsicana and had retired from Mexia State School after 20 years of service.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son, and a younger sister.

She is survived by her five children and seven grandchildren, son Duane F. Keating and wife Laura of Hemphill, daughter Cassandra Williams and husband Danny and children, Mary and David Williams of Bedford, son Kevin Keating and children, Kayla, Kyle and Kristine Keating of Silver City, son Timothy Keating and wife Lora of Hemphill, daughter Jennifer Long and husband Tim and children Taylor and Rebecca Long of Palm City, Fla., and special earth angel, Kellie Keating of Blooming Grove, sister Stella Nutt Persell of Corsicana, brother Duane Nutt and wife Davis of Corsicana, brother Jimmy Nutt and wife Joyce of Huntsville, and a number of nieces and nephews, and several aunts and uncles.

Service will be 2 p.m. today at Corley Funeral Chapel with brothers Duane Nutt and Jimmy Nutt officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.

Gail Darragh Young Richardson, 62, of Corsicana went to be with her Lord and Savior Thursday, March 22, 2007.

Service will be 10 a.m. today at Griffin-Roughton Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Carpenter officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.

Gail was born Dec. 11, 1944, in Middletown, Ohio, to James and Thella (King) Darragh. She had many fond memories of Chillicothe, Ohio, where she spent most of her school years before her family moved to Texas. She had lived in Corsicana since 1963, raising her family and working as a secretary to the area engineer of the Texas Department of Transportation, where she retired after 23 years of service. After retirement, Gail enjoyed spending time with her precious family and friends, traveling, volunteering and serving her Lord at St. Luke United Methodist Church, of which she was a member.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, Ernest Bennett.

Survivors include her beloved family: son and daughter-in-law, Timothy and Cassie Young of Corsicana; daughter and son-in-law, Kristie (Young) and Mark Bower of Mesquite; grandchildren, Amanda Bourland of Lubbock, Ricky Johnson and Zachary Bower, both of Mesquite, and Emily Young and Madeline Young, both of Corsicana; sister, Judith Bennett of Bush, La.; numerous nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

David Kenneth Bentz, 53, of Corsicana passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, March 20, 2007, in Corsicana.

Service will be 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church with Dr. David Edwards and the Rev. B.F. Risinger Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.

David was born Aug. 28, 1953, in Dallas. He gained his nickname “Big Dave” because he was 6 feet and 9 inches, but his heart was much bigger. David was a Special Olympics coach for over 15 years. Last year at the area meet his family received the Family of the Year Award for Area 12 Chapter. Also for the past few years David and his family had been weekend house parents for Golden Circle Ranch, a house for the intellectually disabled. David and his wife taught missions to a group of 4 and 5 year olds every Wednesday at First Baptist Church. David leaves behind many friends and special athletes. David received his B.B.A. at UTA. He was an Eagle Scout with Boy Scouts of America.

He was a very loving Husband, Father, Brother, Uncle, and Friend. He was tender hearted and loved helping people in any way he could. He was employed with the City of Corsicana retiring after 30+ years of service. He was an avid pool player, and had a great love for his dog, Peanut.

Mr. Dunagan was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a former civil service employee at AOD and Ft. McClellan. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eldon and Jewell Dunagan. The funeral for Violet Maxine Sturgeon, 82, of Corsicana, Texas, will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Assembly of God Church, Fairview. The Revs. Richard Boettiger and Jerry Sturgeon will officiate. Burial will be in South Mennonite Brethren Cemetery, Fairview. Arrangements are by Fairview Funeral Home Inc., Fairview. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

She was born June 25, 1924, in Isabella to Peter P. and Elizabeth Flaming Cornelsen and died Sunday, March 4, 2007, in Corsicana.

She grew up and attended school in Fairview. She attended Bible school in Enid.

She married Paul Sturgeon Feb. 26, 1943, in Fairview. They moved to Waxahachie, Texas, shortly after their marriage where he attended Bible school. They were Assembly of God evangelists for nearly 40 years and traveled across the U.S., Germany, Mexico and Cuba. They lived in Waxahachie until December 1998, when they moved to Springfield, Mo.

She moved to Fort Worth, Texas, following his death April 1, 2001. She later moved to Heritage Oaks Home for Assisted Living in Corsicana.

Surviving are two sons, Gary Sturgeon of Tawakoni, Texas, and Jerry Sturgeon of Russia; three daughters, Sheryl Boettiger of Houston, Sherry Wolf of Bredgman, Mich., and Shauna Brauchler of Mesa, Ariz.; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Assembly of God Missions Department in Springfield.
