Buford Doyle Harrison, 82, of Houston passed away in LaMarque, Texas on August 5, 2000.
Visitation is set for Monday, August 7 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home in Blooming Grove.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 8 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home chapel in Blooming Grove with Pastor Grady Cashion officiating.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Robbie Lee Harrison.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Jeannie and Tommy Rigsby of Sante Fe, Texas; brother and sisters-in-law, Dee and Oreta Harrison of Midway and J.E.
and Ruth Harrison of Madisonville; sister and brother-in-law Joyce and Bob Pharis of Houston; grandchildren Neice Shotwell of Houston and Shelley Frieze and husband Don and great grandchild, Amber Don Frieze of Sante Fe.

A Lion to Remember
Tragedy claims Armstrong's life, but her memory will live

I made it a point to ask about the catcher.
Blooming Grove had just won its regional quarterfinal softball game and did so for a number of reasons. But what stood out in my mind was the three pop outs
catcher Krista Armstrong caught.
Though not as coveted as the no-hitter or hitting for the cycle, the pop-up to the catcher happens rarely it seems, maybe once every two or three games, twice
at the most. Armstrong got to two she probably shouldn't have that night, chasing them down with the reckless abandon that she will forever be remembered
for.
I pen remembered because the community of Blooming Grove got robbed of the best catcher I watched all season.
Armstrong, 16, and highly respected BGISD employee and Blooming Grove graduate Bobby Betts, 31, lost their lives Monday in a tragic automobile accident. Tragic
because it's one of those things you don't expect, nor could you prepare for if you knew it was coming. Tragic because two good people lost their lives, cut so
terribly short.
Armstrong was just a baby, fresh off an incredible sophomore year. She had the
smile of an angel and the fight of a lion, true to her school's mascot.
Tuesday Krista Armstrong was remembered for a lot of characteristics, none the
least of which was her passion for athletics.
"She enjoyed getting dirty," Lions softball coach Jim Owens said. "She didn't
mind giving up some skin. She did whatever she had to for the team."
Like moving to catcher. What I saw was the result of a metamorphosis, a
natural-born middle infielder turned catcher simply because the Lions needed one this year.
The change on the field coincided with a change in priorities, Owens said. The fiercely competitive Armstrong had begun to truly grasp the team concept.
"A lot of kids when they are young it's, "Me, me, me," Owens said, "but she had
grown up and starting thinking about others.
Armstrong was part of a unique team
cohesion, one Owens said is only comparable
to the '96 state championship team. The team pulled together, in one direction, and was sincere about it, he said.
Again, advancing Blooming Grove athletics was all Armstrong knew to do. She donned the uniform in volleyball and basketball as well, and all she knew how
to do was win. If not, Armstrong was going down fighting.
"The thing that sticks out in my mind more than anything else was the effort she
put into everything she did," Blooming Grove volleyball coach Marsha Rogers said. "You couldn't ask for more. Sometimes her skills weren't the best, but her
effort was so far above everybody else's."
That effort apparently masked any flaws Armstrong had skill-wise. In volleyball
she was good enough to be a first-team All-Golden Circle pick. In basketball she was no Michael Jordan, but she was second on the team in steals and scoring and,
if needed, she didn't mind loading the team on her back.
Without question or debate Armstrong earned her place on the All-Golden Circle
softball team set to be released June 11. She was a no-brainer, and still is after stealing a team-record 30 bases and playing lights out defense.
"Her overall competitiveness, her strive to be the best is what I will
remember," Blooming Grove High School Principal Hugh Ellis said. "She was one of those that
wanted to be better. And she had a smile on her face most of the time."
She
definitely had one the night I quizzed Owens about her. But she also had
that fire, that zeal that made her different. While just a sophomore, Armstrong had already assumed a leadership role.
That's what I'll always remember about her. The willingness to accept any challenge. The guts to dive for a loose ball or take an extra base. The attack
mode that left team-mates in awe and opponents on notice that she meant business.
May her zeal for sports, and life, be an example to those who knew her and those
who will follow her.
"You hear 100 percent, 110 percent, there are different trains of thought,"
Owens said, "....but she just gave you everything she had.:
And that was more than percentages could measure.
You can build champions with a team full of Krista Armstrongs. They just won't settle for anything less.
And they make it a point to be noticed. And revered. Notes:

residence.

Mrs. Gainer was born Nov. 20, 1922 in Silver City. She lived in Hubbard the past nine years. She formerly lived in Grantsville, W.V. where she had served as
justice of peace and magistrate for Calhoun County. She was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis Gerald Gainer, in April 1991; and parents, William Burleson Ellis and Mahalie Jo (Williams) Ellis.
Mrs. Gainer is survived by her sons, Willis L. "Monty" Gainer of Alburquerque, N.M., Randolph B. Gainer of Salt Lake City, Utah and Daniel N. Gainer of
Knoxville, Tenn.; brothers James Ellis, Bob Ellis and Ray Ellis, all of Arlington, Joe Ellis of Austin and William Ellis of Panama City, Fla.; sisters
Lorene Holliefield, Louise Hatley and Pauline Sirjord, all of Hubbard, Bertha Carroll of Palestine and Elizabeth Kitchens of Arlington; 13 grandchildren and

She was born March 12, 1931 in Corsicana.
Mrs. Armstrong was preceded in death by her husband, J.C. "Clifton" "Dobber"
Armstrong, father Fred Carnell, and mother Theries Rogers Carnell; and a sister, Marquita Lawless.
She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Sandy and Kenneth Dunagan of Corsicana, Martha and Bob Lapiska of Arlington, and Debbi and Phil Clark of
Corsicana; five grandsons, Chris Hargrove, Shane Spicer and Kenny Dunagan, all of Corsicana, and Brian Lapiska and Jason Lapiska both of Arlington; a

Navy Sea Bees in the Pacific. He also enjoyed square dancing for many years. He was a loving husband , dedicated father and proud grandfather. He will be
remembered and loved by all from this day on.
Mr. Frederick is survived by his wife, Liz Frederick of Arlington; son, Gordon
Frederick and wife Kathy of Cedar Hill; stepson, Johnie Cook and wife Christy of Lindale; daughter; Sherry Livingston and husband Len of Arlington; sister, Amy

Mr. Patterson was the owner of Patterson Grocery & Market for many years. He was

Grove. Mr. Patterson was also a member of Blooming Grove Masonic Lodge and was a veteran of
World War 11.

Mr. Armstrong was born June 5, 1928, in Blooming Grove to George Pruitt and Ola
Ruth Nicholson Armstrong. He was a member of the Palacios First Baptist Church,
a former long-time member of the Palacios Lions Club and a veteran of the
Korean
War, serving with the United States Army. He was a resident of Palacios since
1964 and taught school for 13 years with the PISD, until his retirement in 1976.
He then became a dispatcher for the Palacios Police Department for 11 years.
He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Farmer Armstrong of Palacios; three
daughters, Judy Laughlin and Gail Schunka, both of Victoria, and Laura Ruth
Douglass of Katy; five grandchildren, Leslie, Kyle, Shelby, Jace and Logan; and
two great-grandchildren, Kegan and Chloe.

James Wilson, 72, of Blooming Grove, died June 26, 1995, at Navarro Regional
Hospital.

Michael Wilson of San Diego and Jim Wilson of Chatfield; his sister Patty
Sandlin of Waco; and nine grandchildren.

Raymond McGraw, 77, of Blooming Grove, died May 14, 1995, at his residence.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Central Baptist Church in
Blooming Grove with Dr. Tommy Hood officiating. Mr. McGraw donated his body to
The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.
Memorials may be made to the Blooming Grove School Library or the Corsicana
Public Library.
Mr. McGraw was born Jan. 2, 1918, in Blooming Grove. He attended Hog Eye School
and served in the U.S. Army for four and-a-half years during
World War II. He
was a sergeant with the Seventh Infantry in Attu, New Guinea, Okinawa, and Leyte
and received five combat stars and tht Good Conduct Medal.
He married Winona Morris in 1947 and resided in Blooming Grove from 1948 until
his death. He was a bulldozer contractor for 25 years.
He is survived by his wife, Winona McGraw; his daughter and son-in-law, Jamie
and David Monroe; and his granddaughter, Tosha, all of Blooming Grove.
Mr. McGraw was preceded in death by two sons, Patrick Morris McGraw in 1951 and
Gary Raymond McGraw in 1990.

The city of Blooming Grove was deeply saddened when Megan Gillen met an untimely
death on October 18, 1997. The popular and attractive young lady was killed in a
one car crash between Barry and Blooming Grove on Hwy. 22.
Townspeople spoke highly of Megan and are still shaking their heads in
disbelief. Overflowing with standing room only, the First Baptist Church of
Blooming Grove was filled with relatives and friends paying last respects to a
young, sweet life of 21 years, as Bro. Grady Cashion conducted last rites.
Burial followed at Rose Hill Cemetery.

incident Saturday, the first fatal accident of the day occurred between the
cities of Barry and Blooming Grove on State Highway 22 at approximately 1:30
a.m.
DPS officials
estimated the scene of the accident stretched well over 600 feet as Gillen's
1997 Ford Mustang hit two culverts and flipped several times before coming to a
stop.

She is survived by her husband, Harold Don McGraw of Blooming Grove; daughters,
Debbie McGraw and Donna and son-in-law Ed Bator of Owattona, Minn.; son and daughter-in-law, Ricky and Diane McGraw of Blooming
Grove; three sisters, Margie Anderson of Bedford, Geneva Arnold and Nadine
Ferguson of Kemp; brother, Jimmy Ward of Balch Springs; foster mother Frankie
Cole; mother-in-law, LouEster Mace of Blooming Grove; sister-in-law and

Mr. Hill was born May 7, 1920. He entered military service in 1939 and retired

Reba McCaig, 89, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2007, at Navarro
Regional Hospital in Corsicana. She was born June 12, 1918, in Amarillo,
the daughter of George and Nannie Warren. Early in her life she and her
family moved to Waco, where her father sold farm equipment and real
estate. She graduated from high school and attended Baylor University. On
Aug. 12, 1939, she married J.W. McCaig of Ellis County. On Aug. 13,
1945, James Larry was born. Reba remained in Waco with her parents while
J.W. served in the U.S. Army in Japan. Upon J.W.’s discharge, they moved
to Ennis where she was employed as a secretary at Ennis Business Forms.
In 1951 the family moved to Dallas where Reba was employed with
International Harvester Company. In 1958 the family returned to the
Ennis area settling in the Oak Grove community. Reba continued to work
in Dallas for a number of years and returned to Ennis Business Forms as
executive secretary to the president in the mid-1960s. She retired in
1983 and she and J.W. purchased an RV and traveled throughout the United
States. They enjoyed the summer climate in Colorado and returned each
year during the hot Texas summer months. Reba was a faithful and devoted
Christian and member of Baylor Baptist Church. Reba very much enjoyed her
number one hobby of oil painting. She was preceded in death by her
parents, George and Nannie Warren; and a brother, Charlie Warren. Reba is
survived by her husband of 68 years, J.W. McCaig of Heritage Oaks
Retirement Village in Corsicana; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and
Margie McCaig of Navarro County; three grandchildren, Elizabeth McCaig
of San Antonio, Mary Katherine Lamb of Garland and Jody Munn of Ellis
County; three great-granddaughters; sister-in-law, Lena McCaig of
Garland; three nieces in the Ennis area, Royanne Farmer, Jane Green and
Peggy Erisman; and by many other nieces, nephews, cousins and
friends. Services will be 11 a.m. today at Keever Chapel with the Rev.

Ronald Douglas Warren, 63, of Frost, passed away Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, at
his residence. He was born Feb. 19, 1944, in Waxahachie to Charlie and Helen
Warren. He was a member of Frost Baptist Church, master mason in Masonic Lodge
No. 196 and Karem Shrine Noble. He loved to do carpentry work, working on
houses. He took pride in any work he did, especially his work with dirt. He was
a very modest and humble person. He worked for Warren Brothers and retired from
Gregory and Cooke. Services will by 11 a.m. today at Frost Baptist Church with
Brother Chris Shirley officiating. Burial will follow at Richland Mertens

Just before going to press we learned that Brown Forster of the Liberty Hill
community was struck my lighting and killed, during the rain and lighting storm
noon Thursday. We understand Mr. Foster was standing in his back door when the
sad occurrence happened. We failed to learn whether or not any of the other
members of the family were injured.

Quite a number of members of the Dawson Masonic Lodge went to Dresden Wednesday
afternoon to bury Uncle Joe Hodge, who died at his home near Purdon Tuesday
afternoon. Uncle Joe was a highly esteemed member of the Dawson lodge.

Wesley French Dead
Wesley French, an old and highly esteemed resident of Emmett, died at his home
Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock, after an illness of only ten days. The funeral
service was held at Emmett cemetery [notes] Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock, conducted
by Rev. J. T. McKeown, of this city. The number of friends in attendance at the
funeral was estimated at near 1,000 which is evidence of the high esteem in
which this good man was held.
Mr. French was born in Blunt county, Ala., Dec. 26, 1846. He was first married
to Miss Sallie Carter, and to this union were born seven children. In 1884 he
was married to Miss Fannie Burress, this union being blessed with twelve
children. He is survived by his wife, 14 children, 37 grandchildren and 3
great-grandchildren. Mr. French was a member of the Methodist church, he having
been converted at the age of 26 years, and had remained a member of that church
till his death, a period of 43 years. At the age of 16, he volunteered his
service to his Southland and made a brave and true soldier during the civil war.
Probably no man in this vicinity had a wider acquaintance than died Mr. French.
He was a typical Southerner, and his hospitable manner and big heartedness won
for him the friendship of all with whom he came in contact. He was firm in his
convictions, and always did what he thought was right almost all matters. In his
passing away his community loses a valuable citizen and his wife and children a
kind and indulgent husband and father.

Remains of Wesley French (Uncle John) Buried at Brushy Prairie
The body of Wesley French “Uncle John” was buried yesterday at Brushy Prairie in
the presence of a large gathering of friends and fellow-citizens. Men who have
lived in that community for many years declare that it was the largest
attendance on a funeral in that community within their knowledge. Not only his
neighbors were present, but numbers came from other counties to pay their
respects and mingle their tears with those of the bereaved family.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. T. McKeown who for a long number
of years had been a close personal friend of the deceased. The minister spoke of
his departed friend only in words of tenderness. He spoke of his connection with
the Methodist church when he was in his young manhood and for forty eight years,
he said, he had been a faithful member who was active in church work and was
foremost in furthering its enterprises. He left a heritage, said the minister,
to his family for he was a faithful servant of the Lord. With his fellow man he
was honest, and he was devoted to his family.
He was born in Blount County, Alabama, December 26, 1846, and at the age of
fifteen enlisted as a volunteer in the confederate army and for four years
followed the daring Gen. Bedford Forrest. On the battle field he was brave and
his comrades cheerfully speak of him as a true Southern soldier, both under fire
and around the camp fire. He came to Texas in 1866 and was twice married. His
first wife was Miss Sallie Carter and in that union seven children were born.
After her death in 1882 he was married to Miss Fannie Barnes who survives him.
To them twelve children were born and of the two marriages fourteen children are
living, as follows: Carl, of Talibina, Okla., Sam, of Brushy Prairie; Mrs. Ella
Mitchell of Navarro Mills; Mrs. Lula Douglas of Chickasha, Okla; George and
Jimmy Mack of Brushy Prairie; Fred of Irene; Mrs. Eunce Haynes of Malakoff; Mrs.
Bertie Bradford of Fort Worth, Onie of Wild Cat Ferry, and Ollie, Ruth and Troy.
He also has thirty-seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Numerous floral offerings spoke silently and eloquently of the high esteem in
which the deceased was held.
Mr. French was known to old and young as “Uncle John.” It was over that name
that he contributed to various newspapers. For many years was a constant and
valued correspondent in the Daily Sun and Semi-Weekly Light, both of which are
published by the Sun Light Publishing Company. Each year for a number of years
the correspondents have met for a day of pleasure. Seventeen years ago the
correspondents gathered at Fish Tank #2 (now the Country Club) as guest of Gov.
and Mrs. Geo. T. Jester. It was then that the correspondents organized under the
name of Sun-Light Chats, Uncle John was chosen President and with each following
year he has been re-elected. He always said he appreciated the honor and was a
favorite expression with him to refer to the correspondents as Chats or as his
nieces and nephews, all of whom he declared he loved, and the Chats all loved
him. So deep was this bond of affection that its wave of sorrow,” as one of the
correspondents said “has swept over all Chatdom.” Uncle John possessed a natural
wit and a style of expression that was really captivating. Therefore his
contributions were read and enjoyed in all circles. Hon. E. O. Call referred to
him as “Bill Arp of Texas” and another equally prominent lawyer remarked that if
a person began reading one of Uncle John’s articles he would not stop until the
last word had been read.
His family will mourn his loss. He was a devoted husband and gentle father. His
neighbors will miss him. He was honest and neighborly at all times and stood
always ready to bestow a favor or aid when aid was needed. The Chats will miss
him, for he was their friend and counselor, and nothing so much delighted them
as to meet Uncle John at the yearly picnic. At the Chat’s picnic held at the
waterworks July 30th this year, Uncle John was present as usual and was as
gentel as ever and seemed to be in perfect health. Therefore the announcement of
his illness which was followed by his death came as a severe shock and from over
the county many messages of regret have come to this office.
The pallbearers were John Peters, Bob Thompson, G. M. Price, Charley Price,
Herman Vest and Rea Slater.
The ceremony was solemn and impressive throughout and when the last prayer was
said every one in the great audience stood with bowed head and aching heart for
a neighbor and friend and a man with a heart of sympathy had been called from
the walks of man.

WESLEY FRENCH PASSES AWAY
Well Known Navarro County Resident Died This Morning
Wesley French, president of the Sun-Light Chat writers and who wrote under the
pen name of “Uncle John” died at the family home in the Emmett community this
morning at 9 o’clock after a short illness. He was seventy-four years old and
has been a resident of Navarro county for many years, having been a resident of
the west end of the county since coming from Alabama, his native State, shortly
after the close of the Civil War, in which he fought with distinction during the
several years of its duration, being a member of General Bedford Forrest’s noted
cavalry command. He is survived by his widow and fourteen children and many
grandchildren, besides other relatives. The funeral will take place tomorrow
(Wednesday) morning at 11 o’clock, with interment in the Brushy Prairie
cemetery.
The death of Wesley French will be deeply mourned by the entire community. His
friends were many, there probably being no man, woman or child in Navarro county
who did not know “Uncle John” personally or by his writings. He was an
ex-Confederate soldier, as above stated, and took part in many of the battles
which are now history in that hard-fought struggle between the States. He still
clung to the old Southern ideas of chivalry and honesty and treated his
fellow-man fairly and expected to be so treated in return. He was strong in his
convictions and fearless in the following of those convictions. He was a
consistent Christian, having been a member of the Methodist church for many
years.
In the death of Wesley French a place has been left vacant which will indeed be
hard to fill. He is called to his reward and has taken the long journey. His
loss will be keenly felt and his sorrowing family has the sympathy of the entire
community.

By request this tribute is written, for it is our duty we owe to Uncle John
Wesley French, who for so long was the faithful and proud president of our Chat
page.
Oh, wasn’t it hard to think we had to give him up? But God needed one more angel
amidst his shining band. And so he bent with loving smiles and clasped Uncle
John’s hand.
A great sorrow has fallen upon the Sunlight Chats: It’s honored president, Uncle
John, has passed away.
The death of Mr. Wesley French, (Uncle John), will be deeply mourned by the
entire community. There is not a man, nor woman nor child in Navarro county who
did not know Uncle John by his letters, if they didn’t know him personally. I
knew him for 40 years; he was loved by all who knew him and so many of his
friends will be sorry to learn of his passing away so unexpectedly. He will be
greatly missed around Brushy Prairie and Emmett.
Oh, how the Chats will miss him and his good letters he would write every week
to the Sunlight page.
May the God of all grace comfort and bless his wife and children and the loved
ones he left on earth to mourn his death.
May the Lord comfort the bereaved hearts that they may say, “the Lord giveth and
the Lord taketh away,” is my prayer in their sad hours; his entire family have
my sympathy. How we all will miss him! Words can’t tell how he will be missed
all over this land and country.
Little did we all think the 30th of July that he would be an angel today. But
God had a place in heaven that he wanted to complete, so he took our Uncle John
to fill the vacant seat.
I have just been looking over some of Uncle John’s letters—I have so many of his
letters filed away. When I cut out the last letter he wrote, I didn’t think that
was the last one. I see how I miss his letters he wrote. Just as long as he was
able to go his place was never vacant in his church nor his Sunday School; he
was always ready to help his church and his neighbors. His wife and fatherless
children will miss him most. To them I can only say; Look up higher for him; he
is not in the new made grave; his pain-racked body is there but his spirit is
with the Lord in the eternal glory. He has come to his journey’s end; all his
troubles and heart aches are over on this earth. No good-byes will be there.
We’ll never know a sorrow when we reach that shining shore; we shall be with our
loved ones and oh, how happy we will be.

Little Boy Killed

grandfather’s place, accompanied by his father, the horses drawing the planter
took fright and ran away. The boy fell from the seat and was caught in the wheel
of the machine. He was whipped around several times while his father made
repeated desperate efforts to reach and rescue him. When the boy was released it
was found that one leg was broken in two places, the other in one place, besides
his body and head were bruised and cut in many places. The little fellow was
brought to the P. and S. hospital in Corsicana, reaching here at 5 p.m.
yesterday, two hours after the accident, and he died this morning at 5 o'clock.
The body was taken to Brushie
Prairie Cemetery where it was buried this afternoon
(Saturday).

Resolutions of Respect.
Whereas, it has pleased our Heavenly Father to take from our midst
little Alva French, aged nine years.
He was of a lovable disposition. His innocence, purity and
brightness dispelled many a cloud of gloom and loneliness in the
home. Therefore be it,
Resolved by the Brushy Prairie Sunday School, that in the death of
our member our loss is Heaven’s gain. Our Sunday School has lost a
dear friend and member, his parents a precious son; brothers and
sisters, a loving brother.
Resolved, second, that the death of our member should remind us of
the truth of the Bible, that in the midst of life we are in death,
was never truer than in this case. at noon Friday, April 18, 1919,
well, healthy, happy, helping his father work; when in turning his
team became frightened and ran away, and when his little body was
rescued it was almost mangled. And just at 5 o’clock a.m. on
Saturday, April 19th, the angels bore his little spirit to God who
gave it.
Resolved, third, that we extend our greatest sympathy and prayers to
the bereaved parents in the loss of their dear child, and some sweet
day may they be an unbroken family in the home of the redeemed.
Resolved, fourth, that a copy of these resolutions be placed upon
the minutes of our Sunday School, a copy be given to the family, a
copy be sent for publication.

Funeral Services Walter L. Pevehouse At Blooming Grove Walter L. Pevehouse, 79,
died at this home at Blooming Grove, Wednesday night following a brief illness.
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock from the Methodist
church at Blooming Grove, with Rev. S. T. Brockette, pastor, conducting the
rites. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
A native of Navarro County he was a member of a pioneer family. He was the son
of the late David and Lucindy Pierce Pevehouse. He was active in affairs of the
community and served several years as a peace officer. He was constable of the
Blooming Grove precinct and was sheriff of Navarro County from 1912 to 1916.
Surviving are his wife, Blooming Grove; two daughters, Mrs. W. C.
Absher, Corsicana; Mrs. Ruth Morgan, Los Angeles, Calif.; Three sons, Rufus
Pevehouse, deputy U. S. marshal, Dallas; Clarence Pevehouse, city attorney,
Corsicana; one brothers Will Pevehouse, Blooming Grove; six grandchildren and
other relatives.
Pallbearers were Fred Prince, Walter Hayes, John George, H. S. Whorton, R. S.
High and D. E. Magee.
McCormick Funeral Services directed the arrangements.

Miss Irene French of several miles north of town, died in a Waco sanitarium
Saturday night, and was brought to Purdon on Sunday morning’s train, the burial
taking place at Dresden cemetery Sunday afternoon.
Miss French was taken from here Friday to Waco for an appendicitis operation,
and we understand underwent the operation. She was in a very critical condition
before going.

L. R. French and family near Drane have our heartfelt sympathy. On Sunday
morning the remains of their baby daughter, 13 or 14 years of age, were brought
in from the hospital at Waco where she died after undergoing an operation for
appendicitis. This makes two out of three that has been brought in a corpse from
the same place in the past few years and this last one was laid to rest in the Dresden cemetery
Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock beside her brother that passed away in the
hospital in Corsicana some few years ago. May the God of Heaven help the
grief-stricken ones and help them in this sad hour of sorrow.

Fred McGraw, 81, of Blooming Grove, died Feb. 24, 1991, at Navarro Regional
Hospital.
Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home in Blooming
Grove with the Rev. Terry Skinner officiating.. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vernice (Nanny) McGraw, 1977, and one son,
Lacy McGraw, 1990.
He is survived by four sons, Don McGraw and T. E. McGraw both of Blooming Grove,
Alton McGraw of Dallas and Bobby McGraw of Irving; one daughter, Jane Ryan of
California; three brothers, Earl McGraw and Erwin McGraw, both of Corsicana and
Joe McGraw of Blooming Grove; two sisters, Maria Littlejohn of Milford and Eula
Dale Phillips of Corsicana; 18 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers are Jeff McGraw, David McGraw, Jim McGraw, Bobby McGraw, Willie
McGraw, Joe McGraw, Steve McGraw, and Robert Earl Pryor. Honorary pallbearers
are Lt. Freddie McGraw, Jim Johnson, Kevin McKnight, Larry Ware, Randy Melton,

Eleanor Theresa Berger Barton went to Our Lord on Sunday, Sept. 30,
2007. She was born on March 4, 1924. She was, for 65 years, the
cherished wife of Charles A. Barton, who survives her in Corsicana. She
is adored by three sons and daughters-in-law, Charles Wayne and Becky,
Stanley and Linda, and Robbie and Sonya Barton; and two loving daughters
and sons-in-law, Dorinda Eubanks and Sam Perez, and Teri and Rick
Looney; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She is also
survived by her sister, Otillie Milliken; and her brother, Robert
Berger. She was a faithful member of Immaculate Conception Catholic
Church, Corsicana. She was an avid gardener and talented quilter and
seamstress. Her garden was tended with the same kind of care and love
that she generously shared with those in her life. She will be forever
be honored by her family and remembered by those who knew her. She was
born in Tours, Texas to Frank and Rosa Berger, the sixth of 10 children,
and married in Elk, Texas. She lived most of her life in Dallas and
later years in Corsicana. She will finally rest in the St. Martins
Cemetery in Tours today, after a Requiem Mass at 10 a.m. at Immaculate
Conception Catholic Church, Corsicana. Close friends and family will
participate as pallbearers. Donations may be made in her honor to the
American Kidney Foundation. |

Bobbie Jean Beam, 78, of Barry passed away Sunday, Sept. 30, 2007 at Heritage
Oaks West in Corsicana. She was born July 22, 1929 in Barry to J.O. Varnell and
Myrtle Hodkins Varnell. She was a member of the Methodist Church in Blooming
Grove. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Methodist Church in Blooming Grove
with the Rev. Marvin Moore and the Rev. Jonathan Speegle officiating. Burial
will follow at Dresden Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Kelly Page, David Page, Craig Page, Kenny Varnell, Tracy

Lorene Redden Hackbarth passed away Friday, Sept. 28, 2007. Claudette
was born April 30, 1920, to Dennis and Nora Redden of Corsicana. She was
a faithful and devoted wife to her husband Harland, who died in 1988.
They were lifelong residents of Fort Worth and members of Trinity
Episcopal Church. Claudette worked her way up from the typing pool to
executive secretary to the president of Lone Star Gas Company and
retired in 1985 after 34 years. She was the dutiful daughter, a loving
sister and a treasured aunt. She was gracious and kind to everyone she
met. She loved to entertain everyone with funny jokes and stories. Her
hobbies included playing cards and dominoes, gardening, reading, and
traveling. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband,
Harland; and her five siblings, J.B., Dean, Glen, Jane and Joan.
Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews. All those she leaves
behind will miss Claudy’s spirit of kindness, beautiful character,
gracious presence and abundant warmth. We thank God for the blessing of
Claudette’s life and the influence she had on all of us. She was the

 William George Sharp of Corsicana passed away Sunday, Sept. 30, 2007 in Navarro
Regional Hospital. Mr. Sharp was born Feb. 8, 1913 in Wolfe City, Texas to Quincey and Harriett Elizabeth Runnion Sharp.
He was preceded in
death by his parents; his brother, Richard Sharp; and his sister, Mamie Rae Sharp. He is survived by his beloved wife and partner of 64 years,
Katherine Beaton Sharp; their son, Richard Beaton Sharp; two grandchildren, Christopher Scott Sharp and Katherine Rae Sharp; and a
sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Roberta Beaton Eyberg and Quentin C. Eyberg.
Mr. Sharp worked for Lyon Gray Lumber Company in Sherman, Texas
and was transferred in 1938 to Corsicana where he met his future wife. He rose to the rank of captain in the U.S. Army during
World War II. He always felt it was a privilege to have served. After the war, he worked for the
Continental-Emsco Company in Louisiana, Venezuela, New York City and Houston. He retired as the international vice president, a position that
required much overseas travel. While in New York, he attended the Harvard University’s Advanced Management School. He was a member of the
Methodist Church for many years.
Visitation will be held 6 to 8 p.m. today at Corley Funeral Home. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at First
United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Alexander and Steve Moss assisting, followed by burial in
Oakwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tom McClendon, Claude Philo, Bill Roberts, George Robinson, Maco Stewart and Jimmy Williams. Honorary
pallbearers will be Mike Collins, Fred Dawson, Leonard Fuller, Jack McFerran, H.D. Redden, R.C. Reider, and W.D. Wyatt. Memorials may be

Dean Stubbs of Missouri City, Texas passed away Sept. 30, 2007. She was born in Corsicana, Texas on Sept. 19, 1934, to Homer Harold and Alta B Wasson. Marilyn was employed by Fort Bend Independent School District and retired in 1996 after 21 years
of service. She will be missed by all who loved and knew her. Marilyn had a love for life, a great sense of humor and above all was a devoted wife and wonderful mother. Marilyn loved to cook for her family, loved her grandkids, loved a good game of
dominoes and she made the holidays, especially Christmas, extra special. She also cherished all of the weekend trips she made with her friends. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Clayton Stubbs; sons, Jimmie Stubbs and wife, Lorie Stubbs, Alan
Stubbs and wife, Cathy Stubbs, and Terry Stubbs and wife, Shelly Stubbs; beloved grandchildren, Kenna Stubbs, Kaila Stubbs, Austin Stubbs, Emilie Stubbs, Kylie Stubbs and Carter Stubbs; brothers, Homer Gene and wife, Jann Wasson and Jerry and wife,

KERENS-Funeral services for H.B. Brown, 59, were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the
Bazette Baptist Church. The Rev. Mr. Boyd, pastor, officiated. Burial was at the
Kerens City Cemetery under the
direction of Pashal Funeral Home.
A lifelong resident of the Kerens area and native of Bazette, Brown was
maintenance supervisor for the Dallas Zoo. He died Sunday in Memorial Hospital.
Surviving are his widow, Opal Lee Brown; a son, Billy Ray Brown; two daughters,
Mrs. Barbara Sue Jones, Excelsior Springs. Mo., and Mrs. Linda R. Good,
Crandall; 10 grandchildren; one brother, Foy Brown, Bazette; a half-brother Avin
Brown, Grand Prairie; and two sisters, Mrs. Ala Mae Goodwin and Mrs. Juanita
Bailey both of Dallas.

KERENS—H. B. Brown, 59, native of Bazette and lifelong resident of Kerens, died
Sunday in Memorial Hospital. He was maintenance supervisor for the Dallas Zoo
and a member of the Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Bazette Baptist Church with
the pastor, the Rev. Mr. Boyd, officiating. Burial will be in the
Kerens City Cemetery under the
direction of the Paschal Funeral Home.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Opal Lee Brown, Kerens; a son, Billy Ray
Brown, Kerens; two daughters, Mrs. Linda Ruth Good of Crandall and Mrs. Barbara
Sue Young of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; one brother, Foy Brown of
Bazette; and two sisters, Mrs. Juanita Baily and Mrs. Ala Mae Goodwin, both of
Dallas.
