William G. Lester, Capt.
April 28, 1828 - April 9, 1909

Capt. W. G. Lester Dead

Hillsboro, Tex., May 21- Information has reached here of the death of Capt. W. G. Lester of this place, which occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Smith, at Blooming Grove, last Sunday at 11:15 o'clock, interment being had in the cemetery there the following day with Masonic honors by the Blooming Grove Lodge. Deceased had been a citizen of Hillsboro since 1895, coming here in May of that year from Georgia. He was born in Columbia, S.C., and was 81 years and 18 days old at death. He served in the Virginia campaign during the early part of the war, participating in the first battle of Manassas and other principal engagements in that section, and in the latter part of the conflict, served in a command in Georgia. About two years ago, he entered the Confederate Home at Austin, but after remaining there about a year asked for and received a discharge. Deceased was very prominent in Masonic circles and among the veterans of the lost cause.

Miss Linnie B. Sample Passes Away At a Local Sanitarium
Dallas, Tex., June 11. –Miss Linnie B. Sample, who was born at Blooming Grove on May 29, 1890, died Tuesday evening at St. Paul’s sanitarium. She had resided in Dallas six months. The remains were shipped to Blooming Grove for interment.

Jewell Inez Wright, 80, of Corsicana, died Aug. 10, 1989, at her residence.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the First Baptist Church at Throckmorton, with Dr. Frankie Rainey and the Rev. Mike Gabbert officiating. Burial will be at Throckmorton Cemetery, Merriman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include two sons,  Lloyd R. Wright of Waxahachie and Ted Wright of Corsicana; one brother, Jack McNutt of Longview; two sisters, Sammie Osborn and Allie Glenn, both of Throckmorton; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Minnie Hornsby
Minnie Hornsby, 69, of Greenville and formerly of Corsicana, died July 12, 1989 in Greenville.
Services were 2 p.m. Friday in the Rentfrow Funeral Chapel in Caddo Mills with the Rev. Hugh Minefee officiating. Burial followed in the Campgrounds Cemetery.
She was employed at Roy's Cafe for several years and was a member of the Northside Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband Fred Hornsby, her father and mother W. B. and Regania Burden, two sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include one daughter, Alice Ragan of  Caddo Mills; one son, Jack Wayne Hornsby of Caddo Mills; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Martha Brown of Corsicana, and Annie Mae Harris of Malakoff; one brother, Melvin Buren of Athens; a number of nieces and nephews.

Grady L. Fox, 75, of Corsicana died June 23, 1989, at Navarro Regional Hospital. Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, June 25, 1989, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Corsicana, with the Rev. Carl Utley and Rev. A. L. Cronk officiating. Masonic graveside services will follow at Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery. Corley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Fox was born Oct. 12, 1913, in Thornton and had lived in Corsicana since 1979. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where he served is a deacon. He was also a member of Corsicana Masonic Lodge No. 174, A.F. & A.M., a Knight Templer in Corsicana and a member of the American Legion in Corsicana. He was a Shriner and member of Karem Temple, Waco, and a member of the VFW in Refugio. He was a retired shop foreman with Quintana Petroleum Corporation in Refugio and served in the Seabees during WWII.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah Fox of Corsicana; two sisters, Mrs. Arnold Jackson of marlin and Mrs. Lester Talley of Groesbeck; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Nolan Ashby, W. W. Dosser, James Basham, Mike Fix, Rodney McLaughlin, Scott Wigley, Rex Carpenter and H. M. McMullan. Honorary pallbearers will be W. H. Tipton, Eugene Stewart, J. T. Ayers, J. A. Penny, and Carl. Norwell.

Randall Lewis Robinson, 67, of Streetman, died June 22, 1989, in Medical Center Hospital, Tyler.
Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday in St. Elmos Cemetery, Winkler, with the Brother Richard George officiating. Capps Funeral Home of Fairfield is in charge of arrangements.
he was born Sept. 30, 1921. He was a disabled veteran who served in World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Daisy Mae Robinson of Streetman; four sons, Murray Wayne Robinson of Mexia, Randall Lewis Robinson Jr. and Kenneth Ray Robinson, both of Teague, and Paul David Robinson of Fairfield; three daughters, Carolyn Ann Schick and Shirley Kay Cochran, both of Fairfield, and Paula Ruth Hoffman of Waco; two brothers, James P. Kenneth Lynn Davidson, 58, of Denton died May 9, 1989, in Kerens.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in the Schmitz/Floyd/Hamlett Chapel in Denton. Bob Hagemann will officiate, assisted by Paul  Reed. Burial will be in Roselawn memorial  Park in Denton.
He was born Feb. 15, 1931, in Rice and served in the U.S. Army. He worked as a firefighter for the City of Denton for 26 years before retiring, and was a member of the Methodist Church.
He is survived by one son, Mark Davidson of Denton; his mother, Olga Davidson, of Kerens; one sister, Billie Bradley of Levelland; and one brother, Randall Davidson of Kerens.

Mrs. C. A. "Bessie" Steele, 91, of Dallas, died May 9, 1989 in Dallas.
Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the Corley Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dickson Rial officiating. Burial will be in the Richland Cemetery.
She was born Nov. 10, 1897 in Navarro County, and had lived in Dallas for 28 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. S. F. Coker of Dallas; four grandchildren, Gail Lowrey of Lancaster, Carolyn Niece and Diane Franklin, both of Dallas, and Dale Coker of Desoto; nine great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Wilton Thomas and Bill Thomas, both of Corsicana; one sister, Moreta Slaughter; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Chris Coker, Walter Appleby, Richard Franklin, Richard Lowrey, Corky Narramore, and Anthony Lowrey.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday at Corley Funeral Home.

He was a member of the Lutheran Church in Albany.

Mercedes - M. W. McAfee, Sr., died at the family residence Sunday morning following a short illness. Deceased had lived in the Valley for three years where he had dealt in the real estate business. He was a resident of Dallas for 20 years prior to coming to the Valley.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Helen Virginia McAfee; five sons, Wightman of Longview; Tom, of Dallas; Hugh, of Drumright, Oklahoma; Harry, of Dallas, and Richard, of Mercedes; two daughters, Mrs. Wood S. Erskine of St. Louis., Mo., and Mrs. J. H. Neely of Dalton, Ga; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Nena Florer, of La Foria.
Funeral services will be held at the family residence in La Feria, Monday, 4 p.m. In case of inclement weather, services will be held at the Statler funeral parlors, Mercedes. Pallbearers will b e C. FORMER CORSICANA BUSINESSMAN DIED IN LAFERIA SUNDAY
M. W. McAfee, aged 82 years, former prominent business man of Corsicana and Dallas, died in Laforia Sunday, according to information received here. Funeral services were held at Laferia Monday where interment was made.
Surviving are five sons, Tom W. McAfee, Dallas; Henry McAfee, Dallas; Hugh McAfee, Drumwright, Okla.; Richard McAfee, Mercedes; M. W. McAfee, Jr., Palestine; two daughters, Mrs. W. S. Erskine, St. Louis, and Mrs. J. H. Neely, Dalton, Ga.; two brothers, Cicero McAfee, Corsicana, and Homer McAfee, Tulsa, Okla., and a number of other relatives, including several nephews and nieces residing in Corsicana and Navarro County.

NATIVE OF NAVARRO COUNTY DIED LAST NIGHT IN TRINIDAD
J. S. Hagle, aged 66 years, native of Raleigh, Navarro county, died at his home in Trinidad Thursday night.
Funeral services were held from the Dresden church with burial in the Dresden cemetery Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock. The rites were conducted by Rev. Zane Mason and Rev. Moore. The Masons had charged of the rites at the grave.
Surviving are his wife of Trinidad; a son Maurice Hagle, Goose Creek; two daughters, Mrs. Madrine Tiner and Mrs. B. G. Ridens, both of Highlands, Texas; three grandchildren, three brothers, Mack Hagle, Corsicana; Tom Hagle, Ardmore, Oklahoma, and Frank Hagle, Delia; two sisters, Mrs. Jo Ann Toole, Ennis, and Mrs. Mary Hagle, Powell, and other relatives.

J. C. CONNER DIES HERE TUESDAY; BE BURIED WEDNESDAY

J. C. Conner, aged 56 years, native of Roane, Navarro county, died at the home of his brother, Wm. Conner, 738 West Second avenue, Tuesday morning at 10:30 o'clock and the funeral will be held from the Wm. Conner residence Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock with interment in the Conner cemetery northeast of Corsicana. The services will be conduced by Rev. Wood, pastor of the Roane Baptist Church.
He was married to Miss Minnie Leach in 1925.
Surviving are his wife, brother and other relatives.
Active pallbearers will be Billy Beasley, John Conner, Dillard Conner, Archie Conner, Jim Frazier and Zack Banks.
Honorary pallbearers will be friends of the family.
Sutherland Funeral Home will direct the funeral.

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR J. C. CONNER HELD WEDNESDAY

Funeral services for J. C. Conner, aged 56 years, native of Navarro county, who died Tuesday morning at 10:30 o’clock, were held from the residence of his brother, Wm. Conner, 739 West Second avenue, Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock with interment in the Conner cemetery northeast of Corsicana. The services were conducted by Rev. White pastor of the Roane Baptist church.

Surviving are his wife and one brother.

Active pallbearers were Billy Beasley, John Conner, Dillard Conner, Jim Frazier, and Zack Banks, Honorary pallbearers were friends of the family.

Sutherland funeral home directed the funeral.

Athens, Texas - Services for Mrs. Eric Dorsey Spurlock, 80, who died Thursday in a Dallas hospital, will be held at the First Methodist Church in Athens Saturday at 10 a.m., with burial in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Blooming Grove.

Mrs. Spurlock lived in Athens for 20 years before moving to Dallas last June.

Survivors are her husband, W. J. Spurlock; one son, J. J. Spurlock of Denton; two daughters, Mrs. E. B. Anderson of Dallas and Mrs. R.D. Smalley of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one sister, Mrs John George of Blooming Grove.

Woman Found Shot To Death

A 58-year-old Dallas woman was found dead in a parked car on the lot of Sparkman's Funeral Home, 2115 Ross Ave., about 3:15 p.m. Friday.

A note instructing that a funeral home in Blooming Grove, Navarro County, be given custody of the body was found in the lap of Lucille Walker Moore of 6206 Sudbury.  A .38 caliber pistol was found on the front seat, police said.

Justice of the Peace Joe B. Brown, Jr. withheld a verdict pending results of an investigation.

Blooming Grove Native Dies In Dallas Friday
Mrs. Lucille Walker Moore, 58, native of Blooming Grove, was reported found shot to death in a parking lot in Dallas Friday afternoon, with a pistol in the car. An autopsy was being conducted at Parkland hospital in Dallas Saturday.
Mrs. Moore, the widow of the late Dick Moore, who died several years ago as the result of burns suffered in an airplane accident, was reared in Blooming Grove and at the time of her death, was office manager for an oil insurance association. She formerly was a piano teacher at Forney.
Funeral services will be held from the First Methodist church in Blooming Grove with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, but the arrangements were incomplete Saturday.
The rites will he conducted by Rev. Hubert Taylor, pastor.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Marilyn Duckworth, Dallas; one granddaughter. Mother, Mrs. Ida Green Walker, Waco; two brothers. J. E. Walker. Longview, and
R. L. Walker, US Air Force; a sister, Mrs. Mike Cumpston, Waco, and other relatives.

For Mrs. Moore
BLOOMING GROVE, Jan. 6 (Spl.) — Funeral services for Mrs. Lucille Walker Moore, 58. who was found dead in a Dallas parking lot Friday, were held from the First Methodist church Sunday at 2 p.m. with burial in Rose Hill cemetery. The rites were conducted by Rev, Hubert Taylor, pastor of the church.
Mrs. Moore had resided in Dallas for a number of years and was connected with an oil insurance association. She formerly was a piano teacher in the Forney public schools and was a member of the First Methodist church choir in Dallas for many years.
A caravan of 12 automobiles Brought members of the Dallas Choir here Sunday for the services.
Surviving are a daughter. Mrs. Marilyn Duckworth. Dallas; mother, Mrs. Ida Green Walker.
Waco; a granddaughter, two brothers, J. E. Walker. Longview, and R. L. Walker U. S. Air Force; a sister. Mrs. Mike Cumpston, Waco, and other relatives.
Pallbearers were Miller Reid, Hollis Pitts. John D. George, Kermit Cumpston, Drew Gillen and R. Bruce McCormick.

Mrs. Holtzheuser, a native of Ennis, died here Sunday.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Dallas.

Funeral rites are planned for 10 a. m. Wednesday at the Central Baptist Church in Blooming Grove, with the pastor, Rev. Rudolf McVey, officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery. McCormick Service will direct.

Funeral services for Roy Dean Futch, 23, of 406 S. Hampton, a beautician for Art Style Beauty Salon, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the Calvary Baptist Church here.  Burial will be in Blooming Grove, Navarro County.

Mr. Futch, a native of Corsicana and a Dallas resident for 18 years, died here Wednesday.  He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church.

LONGVIEW, Texas - David F. Pevehouse, 84, died at his home here Saturday.  He was a retired farmer and had lived here three months.

Among survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Frank Kirk of Longview and Mrs. Grace Treadway of Dallas.

D. F. Pevehouse Rites Monday

BLOOMING GROVE (Spl) — David Frank Pevehouse, 84, retired farmer, died in Longview Saturday. He was a native of Navarro county.

Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p. m. from the McCormick Funeral Service Chapel with burial in Rose Hill cemetery. The rites were conducted by Rev. A. F. Sanders, pastor of the First Baptist church, of which he was a member.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Grace Treadaway. Richardson, and Mrs. Frank Kirk, Longview; four grandchildren 11 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, two brothers, Walter Pevehouse, Newcastle, and Rice Pevehouse, Cuba, Mo.; a sister Mrs. Sallie Hughes, Bryson, and other relatives.

CORSICANA, Texas - Tom Tipping, 88, of Blooming Grove, a retired Navarro County farmer, died here Saturday.

Survivors; a son, Emory D. Tipping of Dallas; four daughters, Mrs. Jim Ward of Blooming Grove, Mrs. Laura James of Killeen, Bell County, Mrs. Myrtle James of Lubbock and Mrs. E. F. Hester of Corsicana; 16 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Corley Funeral Chapel here.  Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Blooming Grove.

Funeral services for John Porter Johnson of 3233 Colgate, a retired Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. employee, were held Thursday in the Central Baptist Church of Blooming Grove, Navarro County.  Burial followed there in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Johnson, a native of Frost, Navarro County, died in Blooming Grove Tuesday.

Survivors; wife and a son, J.P. Johnson, Jr. of Austin.

Porter Johnson

BLOOMING GROVE (Sp.)—John Porter Johnson of Dallas died suddenly in Blooming Grove Tuesday. He was a retired Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. employe. He was born Dec. 1898 in Frost.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Central Baptist Church here with Dr. Edward A. Mohns of Highland Park Presbyterian Church of Dallas officiating and burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Blooming Grove.

He was a veteran of World Wars I and II.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Leila Ruth George Johnson and a son, J. P. Johnson Jr. of Austin.

Pallbearers are F. D. Gathier, J. C. Stone, W. T. Rea, Miller Reid, Hubert Braselton, Dr. J. D. Holland, J. O. Williams and Sam Carroll.

J PORTER JOHNSON FUNERAL LAST WEEK

John Porter Johnson of Dallas died from an apparent heart attack at mid-afternoon Tuesday last week as he and members of his family were visiting the J.D. George farm northeast of Blg Grove.  With him were his wife, the  former Lelia Ruth George, and his father-in-law, John D. George of Blg Grove, owner of the farm.

Mr. Johnson, born in Frost in 1898 and reared there, lived in Blg Grove several years before moving to Dallas where his home was at 3233 Colgate.  He was retired as right-of-way superintendent for Bell Telephone Company.

Mrs. Johnson of the Dallas address and a son, John Porter, Jr., of Austin are the immediate family.

Funeral was held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock in Central Baptist Church of Blg Grove and interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery.  Dr. Edward R. Mohns, pastor of Highland Park Presbyterian Church was the minister and Mrs. R. Bruce McCormick was organist.  Casket Bearers were Dr. J.D. Holland, W.E. Carroll, J.O Williams, Miller Reid, Hubert Brazelton, J.C. Stone, F.D. Gaither and W.T. Rea.

Dallas Lodge No. 497, AF&AM, conducted the committal service and McCormick Funeral Service directed.

Mr. Johnson was a veteran of both WWI and WWII.

ENNIS - Services for Claud L. Fuller, 77, a retired farmer who died Tuesday at a Dallas hospital, will be held at the Bunch Funeral Chapel in Ennis at 2 p.m. Thursday.  Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Blooming Grove.

Fuller, a native of Hill County, was a farmer in the Blooming Grove area before moving to Ennis in 1948.

Survivors include a son, W. T. Fuller of Wilmer.

Man Dies On Job On 93d Birthday

BLOOMING GROVE, Navarro Co., Texas - Richard R. Massengale died on his 93d birthday Wednesday while at work at the Whorton Feed Store here.

Mr. Massengale was being congratulated by friends when he suddenly felt weak, lay down on a bench and died.

He formerly operated cotton gins at Emhouse, Cryer Creek, Barry and Blooming Grove.

His wife was found dead at the family home here July 22.

Survivors include a son, L. D. Massengale of Dallas; a brother, W. M. Massengale of Barry; a sister, Mrs. Annie Laura Collins of Corsicana.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the McCormick Funeral Home here.

Hold Services R. R.Massengale

BLOOMING GROVE, Aug. 8 (Spl.) — Funeral services for Richard R. Massengale, 93, who died Wednesday, were to be held Thursday at 4 p. m. from the First Methodist church here. Burial will be In Rose Hill Cemetery.

The rites will be conducted by Rev. Hubert Taylor, pastor. Massengale was at work at the Whorton Feed store Wednesday and was being congratulated by friends and neighbors on his 93rd birthday. He became ill and laid down on a bench, expiring; without a struggle.

Native of Tennessee, Massengale came to Texas as a child. He formerly owned and operated gins at Emhouse, Cryer Creek, Barry and Blooming Grove and had been employed at the feed store for a number of years.

His wife died suddenly July 22.

Surviving are a son, L. D Massengale, Dallas; a brother, W. M. Maasengale, Barry; a sister, Mrs. Annie Laura Collins, Corsicana; three grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and other relatives. Pallbearers will be H. S. Whorton, Oscar Ingram, Seth Grant, Lloyd Simpson, Hollis Pitts and R. Bruce McCormick.

CORSICANA, Texas - George King, 71, Blooming Grove rancher, died Saturday at his home in Blooming Grove following a stroke suffered several weeks ago.

BLOOMING GROVE, Feb. 27 (Spl.)—George King, 71, rancher, died at his home Saturday following a stroke several weeks ago.

Funeral services were held Monday at 2:30 p. m. from the First Methodist church with burial in the Rose Hill Cemetery.

The rites were conducted by Rev. Carl Gilkerson, pastor; Rev. Denzil Wright, Hubbard, former pastor of the local church; Rev. George Beardon, First Baptist church, and Rev. Milton Rhodes, Central Baptist church pastor.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Charlene King, Blooming Grove; two sons. Ray E. and Glenn A. King, both of Houston; a daughter, Mrs. H. T. Brown, Alice; a brother, Will King. Oklahoma City; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

CORSICANA, Texas - Mrs. Beulah Viola Holland, 84, was found dead at her home in Blooming Grove Tuesday.  Justice of the Peace J. J. Sheppard ruled death from natural causes following an inquest.

Funeral services were held Thursday with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

A native of North Carolina, Mrs. Holland had resided at Blooming Grove 64 years.

Mrs. Holland Rites Thursday

BLOOMING GROVE, Sept. 20 (Spl.)—Mrs. Beaulah Viola Holland, 84, was found dead at her residence here Tuesday afternoon by neighbors. A coroner's inquest conducted by Justice J. J. Sheppard ended in a verdict of death due to natural causes.

Funeral services will be held from the McCormick Funeral .Service chapel Thursday at 3 p.m., with burial in the Rose Hill cemetery. Rev. W. H. Beste, rector of St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Arlington, Texas, will conduct.

Mrs. Holland, a resident of Blooming Grove for 64 years, and a native of North Carolina, is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Blue and a son-in-law, William H. Blue, Grand Prairie; four stepdaughters, Mrs. Durwood Bateman and Mrs. G. H. Tittle, both of San Antonio; Mrs. Nannie Enlow, and Mrs. Joyce Clark, both of Amarillo.

Pallbearers will be Arthur Smith, Douglas Magee, Charlie Sheppard, R. Bruce McCormick, Drew Gillen and Earl Magee.

Benjamin Harris Reed

Funeral services for Ben H. Reed, 65, who died July 4th in Baylor Hospital, were held at Laurel Land Memorial Chapel in Dallas, Saturday July 6th. Burial was in Blooming Grove Cemetery.

The Rev. Elmer Kelly and the Rev. Guy Lewis officiated.

Mr. Reed was a member of the Ross Avenue Baptist Church and taught a Sunday School class there.

He is survived by two daughters, Linda Reed of Dawson, and Virginia Sue Reed of Houston.

Mr. Reed had been in ill health for some time.

Mrs. Sallie A. Hill, Native Texan, Dies At Blooming Grove

BLOOMING GROVE, Texas - March 16 - Mrs. Sallie A. Hill, 90, died Thursday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. R.W. George.  She was a native Texan and lived most of her life in Blooming Grove.

Funeral services will be Friday at the Central Baptist Church.  Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Hill is survived by four daughters, Mrs. George and Mrs. Ruby Kelsey, both of Blooming Grove, Mrs. J. S. Stubbs of Sanger and Mrs. V. T. Grant of Fort Worth; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Blooming Grove Resident Dies On Way To Hospital
Funeral services for Mrs. Sallie A. Hill, 90, native Texan, who died Thursday, were held Friday afternoon at the Central Baptist church in Blooming Grove. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery.
Mrs. Hill had resided in the Blooming Grove area most of her life.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. R. W. George and Mrs. Ruby Kelsey, both of Blooming Grove; Mrs. J. S. Stubbs. Sanger, and Mrs. V. T. Grant, Fort Worth; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Hill suffered a heart attack three weeks ago. When her condition took a turn for the worse Thursday, she was placed in a McCormick ambulance to be taken to a Corsicana hospital, but died en route.

Electric Shock Fatal To Stephenville Woman

BLOOMING GROVE, Texas, Nov. 15 - Funeral services for Mrs. R. H. Connally, 50, of Stephenville, accidentally electrocuted Friday near Breckenridge, were held in the Blooming Grove Christian Church.  She was reared here.

Mrs. Connally was killed when she stepped on a live wire as she and her husband tried to assist two young men of Brownwood whose car had overturned fourteen miles north of Breckenridge.  Her husband and another man were injured as they tried to rescue her. 

Surviving are her husband of Stephenville; a daughter, Mrs. Bobbie Dell Simmons, Knox City; a brother, Charles Joe Dillingham, Fort Worth, and a sister, Mrs. Joe Giles, Dallas.

Live Wire Victim Buried Sunday At Blooming Grove

Funeral services for Mrs. R. H. Connally, aged 60 years, of Steph-envllle, who was electrocuted Friday, were held at Blooming Grove Christian church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial was in the Rose Hill cemetery. Mrs. Connally was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. C. N. Dilllngham of Blooming Grove.

Mrs. Connally and her husband, according to The Associated Press, stopped near Breckenridge Friday to try to aid two youths hurt in an automobile accident. Mrs. Connally stepped on a live wire knocked down when a car occupied by Mark Kelso, 20, and Rayford McShann 20, both of Brownwood, overturned 14 miles north of Breckenridge.

The couple was en route to Knox City.

Mrs. Connally's husband received a serious shock and E. V. Lively of Breckenridge suffered burns on a leg trying to rescue Mrs. Connally.

She was killed instantly.  Neither of the youths was seriously hurt in the accident.

Surviving are her husband, a daughter, Mrs. Bobbie Dell Simmons, Knox City; a brother, Charlie Joe Dilllngham, Fort Worth; a sister, Mrs. Joe Giles, Dallas, and other relatives.

Leta (Massengale) Smith

Mrs. Leta Smith, a buyer for LaMode Department Store, died Friday at her home, 5711 Mercedes, after a short illness.  She had lived in Dallas twenty years.

Mrs. Smith was born in Cryer Creek, Navarro County.  Her family moved to Blooming Grove, Navarro County, when she was still a child.  She finished public schools there.

Her first job in the merchandise business was with Fannie Greenlee's store in Corsicana.  After working fourteen years there, she moved to Dallas and took the position with LaMode.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her father, R.R. Massengale of Blooming Grove and a brother,  L. D. Massengale of Dallas.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Methodist Church in Blooming Grove.  The Rev. Roy S. Felder will officiate.  Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery there.

Pallbearers will be Lloyd Simpson of Blooming Grove and Swan Williams, Dawson Bridgeman, W. C. Holdeman, Jack Huntington and Francis Lilly, all of Dallas.

A.B. Crosby Dead at 82

Andrew B. Crosby, 82, retired carpenter, died Saturday in a Dallas hospital.  He lived at 1014 South Edgefield.

A native of Navarro County, Crosby lived in Blooming Grove until he retired in 1940 and moved to Dallas.  In Dallas he was a member of the Tyler Street Methodist Church.

He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. J. R. Burns of Dallas; three sisters, Mrs. E. M. King of Ardmore, Okla., Mrs. Walter Woodard of Fort Worth and Mrs. Ed Hewitt of Stamford, Jones County; two brothers, Boone Crosby of Chilton, Falls County, H. C. Crosby of Harlingen; three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Blooming Grove Methodist Church.  The Rev. Wilfred Bailey will officiate.  Burial will be in Blooming Grove Cemetery. (Rose Hill Cemetery)

CORSICANA, Texas, Aug. 12 - Mrs. Jessie Sheeks Allen, 86, died at her home Friday in Blooming Grove.

Funeral services were held Saturday from the First Methodist Church in Blooming Grove.  Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Surviving are a daughter, Miss Genevieve Allen, Blooming Grove; a son, Ben Allen, Tulsa, and a niece, Mrs. DeWitt Orme, Houston.

Native of Indiana, Mrs. Allen had resided at Blooming Grove sixty years.

BLOOMING GROVE, Aug. 11— (Spl.)—Mrs. Jessie Sheeks Allen, 86, died at her home Friday noon.
Funeral services will be held from the First Methodist church at 4 p. m. Saturday with burial in
Rose Hill cemetery. The rites will be conducted by Rev. Roy L. Felder, pastor.
A native of Indiana, Mrs. Allen had resided here 60 years.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Genevieve Allen, Blooming Grove; a son, Ben Allen, Tulsa; a niece,
Mrs. Dewitt Orme, Houston, She was married to the late H. M. Allen in 1884. He died in 1906.
A son, Sheets Allen, died in 1910.
Stewards of the First Methodist church will be pallbearers.

Funeral services for Victor R. Boyd, 25, of 5210 Native Dancer, who was killed in a car-truck accident Thursday afternoon, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Cockrell Hill Baptist Church.  Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. in Rose Hill Cemetery, Blooming Grove.

A native of Dallas, Boyd had been employed as a dock worker for the T & T Motor Freight Co.

He was a member of the George B. Dealey Masonic Lodge No. 1312, and the Cockrell Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Glenda, and a daughter.

Gordon Wiley Marlow, 60, 2334 Kingswood, a Dallas police department auto pound worker, died here Wednesday.  Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the McCormick Funeral Home in Blooming Grove, Texas.  Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Blooming Grove.

Marlow had lived in Dallas since 1940.  He had worked at the auto pound for 14 years.

He is survived by his wife, three sons, two daughters, two brothers and six sisters.

Ten a.m. funeral service was held Friday at McCormick Chapel for Gordon Wiley Marlow, 60, who died in Dallas where he had lived for 32 years. The Purdon native was a guard for the Dallas Police Department.

Rev. Ronnie Chesser, pastor of First Baptist Church of Blg Grove, officiated, and Mrs. R.B. McCormick was organist. Nephews were Casket Bearers.

Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Lillie Hunton Marlow of Dallas; three sons, William G. Marlow of Mesquite, James R. and Kenneth W. Marlow of Dallas; two daughters, Mrs. B. D. (Sue) Tabor of Dearborn, Mich., and Mrs. Sam (Vickie) Abernathy of Dallas; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild; two brothers, Theo Marlow of Euless and Luther Marlow of Electra; six sisters, Mrs. Lucille Miller of Plano, Mrs. Lois Anderson, Mrs. Esther Patterson, Mrs. Rene Williams, Mrs. Louise Walling and Mrs. Grace Boykin, all of Dallas.

BLOOMING GROVE — Gordon W. Marlow, 60, died Wednesday in a Dallas hospital after a short illness. He had lived in Dallas for the past 30 years and was employed by the Dallas Police Department. He was born Jan. 12, 1912, near Purdon and, married the former Lillie Hunton in 1928 in Dresden.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at McCormick Funeral Chapel in Blooming Grove. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Survivors include Mrs. Lillie Marlow of Dallas; three sons, William G. Marlow of Mesquite, James R. Oren L. Treadaway, 68, of 29381/2 Elm, retired banquet steward for the Baker Hotel, died here Sunday.

Born in Blooming Grove, Navarro County, Treadaway had resided here since 1927. He retired two years ago after 20 years with the Baker. Treadaway formerly worked at the American National Insurance Co. here.

Survivors: Four daughters, Mrs. Rosa Stegman and Mrs. Doris Brown of Dallas, Mrs. Evelyn Vadan of Corpus Christi and Mrs. Frankie Doggett of Richardson; two brothers, Biddy Treadaway of Napa, Calif., and Ben F. Treadaway of Dallas; three sisters, Mrs. Allyne Campbell of Palestine, Anderson County, Mrs. Maedell Couch of Dallas, and Mrs. Annie Menges of Corpus Christi, 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

CORSICANA, Texas - Services for Mrs. Emma Moody, 84, of Everman, Tarrant County, a former Corsicana resident, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in McCammon Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Blooming Grove.

Mrs. Moody died in a Fort Worth Hospital Tuesday after a long illness.

Survivors are four daughters; six sons, including J. L. Moody, Chester Moody, Lamar Moody, Lawrence Moody and Marvin Moody, all of Dallas; 28 grandchildren and 48 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Moody Dies Tuesday In Fort Worth

Mrs. Emma. Moody, 84, of Everman. formerly of Navarro county, died in All Saints Hospital in Fort Worth Tuesday afternoon.

A native of Tennessee, Mrs. Moody spent most of her life in Navarro county, residing at Blooming Grove and Corsicana for many years.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from the McCammon Chapel. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Blooming Grove. The rites will be conducted by Rev. W. J. Richey, pastor of the First Baptist church in Blooming Grove, assisted by Elder L. M. Stevenson of Everman.

Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. E .E. McClure and Mrs. J. A. Lane, both of Corsicana;

Mahone had resided at Blooming Grove since 1919.

A native of Palestine, Mrs. Christie resided at Blooming Grove for many years before moving to Corsicana several years ago. Surviving are 10 children, Mrs. W. T. Truelove, Hubbard; A. C. Christie, Houston; Mrs. E. F. Gorden, Hobbs, N. M.; Mrs. Dan Beets, Kilgore; O. J. Christie, Houston; Mrs. L. H. Robinson, Corsicana; Mrs. H. A. Seabolt, Ennis; Mrs. W. T. Graves, Corsicana; Mrs. L. L. Patterson, Dallas; and Gene Christie, Corsicana; 35 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, Loyd Chandler, and a sister, Mrs. Lewis Quick, both of Palestine, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Lee Fitzgerald's Final Rites Held

Funeral services for Lee Fitzgerald, 70, a retired farmer and a resident of Dallas for the past seven years, were held Sunday afternoon in Corsicana.

Fitzgerald died Thursday night in a Houston hospital following an illness of several months. He lived at 2635 Ann Arbor, Dallas. Prior to moving to Dallas he had been a long-time resident and farmer near Blooming Grove, Navarro County. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Blooming Grove.

Surviving besides his wife are five sons, J. T. Fitzgerald, Leslie G. Fitzgerald and Charles G. Fitzgerald, all of Dallas; A. L. Fitzgerald of Corsicana and Bob E. Fitzgerald of Milwaukee, Wis.; four daughters, Mrs. O. E. Burns of Dallas, Mrs. R. L. Sherrard of Corsicana, Mrs. B. O. Armstrong of McKinney and Mrs. R. J. Hargroves of Cleburne; a brother, J. H. Sheppard of Corsicana; four sisters, Mrs. Betty Woodard of Fort Worth, Mrs. Rose Cook and Mrs. H. C. Blackmon, both of Dallas and Mrs. G. W. Sheppard of Kilgore, 38 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Lee Fitzgerald Rites Sunday

Funeral services for Lee Fitzgerald, 70, retired farmer, Dallas were held from the Corley Chapel Sunday at 2 p.m. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Blooming Grove.

The rites were conducted by Rev. Jack Bell, pastor of the Bethel Missionary Baptist church here.

Fitzgerald, former resident of Blooming Grove, died in the Anderson clinic in Houston Thursday night following a lingering illness.

Surviving are his wife of 2525 Ann Arbor, Dallas; five sons, J. T., Leslie Gene and Charley Joe Fitzgerald, all of Dallas; A. L. Fitzgerald, Corsicana, and Bobby Earl Fitzgerald, Milwaukee, Wis.; four daughters, Mrs. O. E. Burns, Dallas; Mrs. R. L. Sherrard, Corsicana; Mrs. B. O. Armstrong, McKinney, and Mrs. R. J. Private funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday for Mrs. J. H. Hope in Blooming Grove, Navarro County., where she lived. She is the mother of A. E. Hope of 4514 Belfort and J. D. Hope of Wilmer.

Mrs. Hope died Sunday in Blooming Grove. Other survivors include another son, Gordon Hope of Malakoff, Henderson County, and two daughters, Mrs. Arthur Crocker of Blooming Grove and Mrs. John Wooldridge, Itasca, Hill County.

Oldest Resident Blooming Grove Rites Wednesday
BLOOMING OROVE, Aug. 16 (Spl.)— Mrs. Lula Elizabeth Hope, 83, resident of Blooming Grove since 1885, died at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Arthur Crocker, Sunday.
Funeral services will be held from the Central Baptist church, of which she was a member, Wednesday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery.
The rites will be conducted by Rev. T. R. Harrison, pastor.
Mrs. Hope was a native of Mississippi and is believed to have resided here longer than any other resident. She came to this community two years before the Cotton Belt Railroad was constructed from Corsicana to Hillsboro. The railroad was discontinued and removed several yean ago.
Surviving are three sons, A. E. Hope, Dallas; J. D. Hope, Wilmer, and Gordon Hope, Levelland; two daughters, Mrs. Hazel Woolridgc, Itasca, and Mrs. Katie Crocker, Blooming Grow; a half-brother, Julius Dorsey, teacher and school executive, Dallas; 16 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and other relatives.

James A. Hancock, 94, father of two Dallas residents, died Sunday afternoon at his home in Fort Worth, where he had lived the last fourteen years.

Hancock previously had lived in Blooming Grove, Navarro County, Grand Prairie and Goliad, Goliad County.

Survivors include two sons, W.A. Hancock of Grand Prairie and Ersell Hancock of Dallas; two daughters, Mrs. Nellie Lamb of Fort Worth and Mrs. Wayne Frederick of Dallas; a half-sister, Mrs. Fannie Snell of Jasper, Jasper County; two half-brothers, Will Hancock and Albert Hancock, both of Jasper; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

BLOOMING GROVE, Jan. 22—(Spl)—Miss Ethel Boyd, 41, formerly of Blooming Grove, died in the Methodist hospital in Dallas Friday. She was a native of Blooming Grove and moved to Dallas 12 years ago.

Funeral services will be held from the First Methodist church here Sunday at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. The rites will be conducted by Rev. Roy Davis, pastor, and Rev. D. L. White, pastor of the First Baptist church.

Funeral services will be held from the Corley Chapel Sunday at 3:30 p.m. with burial in the Hamilton cemetery. The rites will be conducted by Rev. Bruce Hibbitt, pastor of the Missionary Baptist church, and Rev. Harold Nichols. Baptist minister.
Native of Tennessee, she had resided in this area for 70 years, moving to Corsicana about 10 or 12 years ago from the Pickett community.

Funeral services for the Rev. Obie F. Barton were held Wednesday at 10 a.m. from the Corley Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Dickson Rial of Garland and the Rev. C. W. Pringle officiating. Burial was at Rosewood, Texas.
Rev. Barton died Tuesday at Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. A minister for 41 years, he was at the time of his death pastor of the Caney Missionary Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, three  sons, four daughters, 15 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a brother, a sister and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Obie Barton, native of Gilmer but long time Corsicana resident, died in Memorial hospital  Friday following an extended illness. She was 69.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Gilmer with Rev. J. W. Duggar, pastor, First Baptist church Carthage, officiating. Interment will be in the Rose-Wood cemetery.
Mrs. Barton was the wife of Rev. Obie Barton, who served 18 years in Corsicana with the Baptist association of this county. He organized Fellowship and Unity Baptist churches and was their pastor for 13 years.
The Bartons had been married 48 years. Mrs. Barton was born April 14, 1892. The body will lie in state at McCammon's until Saturday at 10 a.m.
Mrs. Barton resided at Rose-Wood prior to her illness. Her husband is pastor of Mount Calvary Baptist church at Carthage.

CORSICANA, Texas, July 25 - Bill Patterson, 88, Confederate veteran and long-time resident of the Lone Cedar community five miles north of Blooming Grove, died Thursday. Surviving are his wife, one son, several daughters, a number of grandchildren and other relatives.

AGED CONFEDERATE VETERAN DIED NEAR BLOOMING GROVE

BLOOMING GROVE, July 28.— (Spl).—

W. T. Patterson, aged 88 years, Confederate veteran, died at his home in the Lone Cedar community, five miles north of Blooming Grove, Thursday night and the funeral services were held at the Central Baptist church here Friday afternoon at 5 o'clock with interment in the local cemetery. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Fritz Goodbar and Rev. T. G. Story.
He was born in Claborn Parish, Louisiana, May 22, 1842, and enlisted in the Confederate army at Saline, Ark., in 1861, under the command of Albert Sidney Johnston, Company K., L. B. Willis was the captain of the company, and Perry Coldwell was first lieutenant.
At the close of the war, he came to Texas and settled near Blooming Grove. He was married to Catherine Lasley in 1875.
Surviving are six daughters, Mrs. D. H. Pyle, Kaufman; Mrs. J. W. Green, San Angelo; Mrs. C. R. King, Everman; Mrs. Ruby Boyd, Fort Worth; Mrs. George Green and Mrs. George Smith, both of Blooming Grove; one son, Gus Patterson, Blooming Grove; 25 grand-children, 10 great-grandchildren, and three sisters. Mrs. Sarah Ann Franks, Grand Saline; Mrs. Effie Overtuff, Canton, and Mrs. Martha Ann Travis, Canton.

Remains of W. F. Patterson Buried at Lone Oak

William F. Patterson, aged 88 years, passed away at his home in Lone Cedar at 9 p.m. Thursday, July 24, as the results of several weeks illness with his condition steadily growing worse during the time.
Funeral services were held at the Central Baptist church Friday afternoon at 5 o'clock, July 25, with Rev. F. E. Goodbar conducting the services. Interment was in Lone Oak cemetery.

Mr. Patterson was born in Claiburne [sic] Parish, Louisiana, on May 22; 1842. He enlisted in the Confederate army at the age of 19 at Saline.
Arkansas, and served under General Albert Sidney Johnson. He took part in the battle of Shiloh and other important engagements. He was captured by the Federal forces at Big Black in 1863 and in the same year was exchanged as a prisoner of war at Point Lookout Maryland.

After the close of the war he came to Texas and on March 4, 1874, was united in marriage to Miss Catherine Lase [sic] in Navarro county and has made his home here continuously since that time. To this union were born 12 children, several of whom survive him, six daughters and one son. They are: Mrs. D. H. Pyle, Kaufman; Mrs. J. W. Green, San Angelo; Mrs. C. R. King, Everman; Mrs. Ruby Boyd, Fort Worth; Mrs. George Green, Lone Cedar; Mrs. George Smith, Blooming Grove; and G. A. Patterson, Blooming Grove. He is also survived by 25 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren and three sisters, Mrs. Ann Travis, Canton; Mrs. Sarah Ann Franks, Grand Saline; Mrs. Effie Overturf, Edgewood.

The deceased was converted at an early age, united with the church of his choice and was a consistent member. He joined the central Baptist church in Blooming Grove in 1921.

GRAND PRAIRIE - Funeral services for Dock Grant Spurrier, 75, of 801 N.E. 31st, a retired salesman, will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday in Southland Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Lone Oak Cemetery in Blooming Grove, Navarro County.

He died late Friday in a Dallas hospital.

Spurrier, a native of Blooming Grove, was a member of Mayers Road Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Jan; three sons, Aubrey Spurrier, Bobby Spurrier and Rick Spurrier; one daughter, Mrs. Joy Rawls; two brothers, Troy Spurrier and Duward Spurrier; two sisters, Mrs. Bob Hicks and Mrs. U. J. Thomas; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Burial Rites Planned At Blooming Grove for Army Air Crash Victim

BLOOMING GROVE, Navarro Co., Texas, May 20 - Funeral services for Sergt. David L. Boyd Jr. former Blooming Grove High School athlete who was killed Monday in an airplane crash in South Carolina, will be conducted here at a time to be set later. The crash occurred when two Army bombers brushed together while flying in formation. Three other Army men died in the accident. The time that his body will arrive here has not been announced. His parents live on a farm near here.

BLOOMING GROVE MAN ONE OF SIX AIRMEN KILLED IN CRASH

SERGT. RAYMOND L. BOYD IN ONE PLANES COLLIDING IN MID-AIR
Sergeant David L. Boyd, about 26, of Blooming Grove, was one of four army fliers instantly killed near Rains, S. C., Monday when two planes flying in a formation of six collided, the Associated Press reported. One of the planes exploded on coming to earth and the other burned. Witnesses were quoted as saying the wing of one plane apparently struck the wing of another as they banked. Army officials at Savannah, Ga., base said the planes were on a training flight to Langley Field, Va., at the time of the accident. The planes were light bombers. The wing of one of the planes was torn off and the plane plummeted to the ground while the second ship crashed about a mile away.

Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. D L. Boyd, who reside two miles north of Blooming Grove; three sisters, Miss Pearl Boyd and Mrs. Harold Dozier, both of Blooming Grove, and another married sister who resides in Fort Worth.

Funeral arrangements had not been learned here shortly afternoon Tuesday, but it is expected the body will be returned to Blooming Grove.

County Judge E. D. McCormick, who resides at Frost, visited the Boyd home early Tuesday and said the family had not received an official notification from the war department of the accident. The family was advised of the death of Sergeant Boyd by a newspaper late Monday.

Boyd had been in the army between three and four years.

Serg. David L. Boyd Buried Friday

The Funeral services for Sargeant David L. Boyd, Jr., age 27 years, who was killed in a plane crash near Rains, S. C. May 19, were held at the Lone Oak church Friday afternoon with Rev. W. O. Patterson, pastor of the First Baptist church, conducting the rites.

(Bud) as he was called by his family and many friends, was born and reared in this community and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. D. L. Boyd.
Surviving are his parents, three sisters, Miss Pearle Boyd, Mrs. Harold Dozier of Blooming Grove and Mrs. Don George of Kansas.

Pallbearers were Elvis, Cyreal, Herman and Alva Boyd, Everett, Granville, Dorsey and Claudie Reed, all first cousins of the deceased.

Burial was made in the Lone Oak cemetery with the McCormick Funeral Service in charge.

Blanche Gordon Harris, 88, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008, in Plano. She was born on Feb. 25, 1919, in Richland. She was a lifelong resident of Corsicana, and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Corsicana and the DAR. She was active with the Kinsloe House. She was a very devoted daughter, and a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Corley Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Nancy Schusler, the Rev. Mike Alexander, and Mr. Steve Moss officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Ellen Evelyn McCain Humphries of Missouri City went to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on Feb. 9, 2008. Evelyn was born May 12, 1920, in Angus to Tennie Ellen Stewart McCain and Ed McCain Sr. She married James Earl Humphries Sr. on May 26, 1940, in Corsicana. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Earl Humphries Sr.; one daughter, Juanita Humphries Wofford; one son, James Earl Humphries Jr.; two granddaughters, Baby Humphries and Jeanette Wofford; two great-grandsons, Daniel Tyler Quinton and Noah Braeden Goree; two brothers and three sisters. Mrs. Humphries leaves behind one brother, Eddie McCain Jr.; four children, Jackie and Gerald Rich, Jerrie and Russell Loper, Josephine and Ed Arnold and Jonathan and Maria Humphries. Keith Rhodes, 52, a resident of Corsicana, passed away on Tuesday evening, Feb. 12, 2008, in Dallas. He was born in Cleburne on Sept. 22, 1955, to Johnny Lumpkin Rhodes and Georgia Jones Rhodes. Keith had been employed with the Texas Department of Transportation for 17 years as a surveyor. He graduated from Glen Rose High School in 1974 and was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Corsicana. Keith loved being outdoors, fishing, coaching T-Ball and softball, and golfing. His love of the game of golf and people got him involved in Special Olympics as a golf coach. Keith was preceded in death by his brother Steven Rhodes in 1991. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Ferrell Rhodes of Corsicana; two daughters, Emily Barlow of Corsicana and Rebecca Rhodes of Corsicana; parents, Johnny Rhodes of Fort Worth and Georgia Rhodes of Glen Rose; brothers, Rick Rhodes of Mansfield and Kenny Rhodes of Glen Rose; sister, Sherry Walker of Glen Rose; and a number of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and friends. He was a decorated veteran, and worked as a designer with the U.S. Government.

Mr. Verdi was cremated, and no services are planned at this time.

James Clinton Davis
James Clinton Davis, 80, died Friday, February 8, 2008 at the Dallas Regional Medical Center in Mesquite. He was born on November 11, 1927 in Tom Bean, Texas to Elmer C. and Zetta Nabors Davis. He served in the United States Navy from October 19, 1945 - November 4, 1948. He was a painter. Mr. Davis is survived by his wife Natalie Dozier Davis of Dallas; 2 daughters - Lisa Carol Davis of Houston and Lea Ana Davis of Dallas; brother - Kenneth Carolton Davis and a grandchild Ryan Oliver Davis of Dallas. Jack Nicholas Barham, 81, died at his home here Friday. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock. The rites were conducted by Rev. T. R. Harrison, Baptist minister.
Native of Tennessee, Barham had lived in this community since a small boy. He had been a member of the Central Baptist church 25 years.
Surviving are three sons, N. C. Barham, Cleburne; H. F. Barham, Fort Worth, and Milton Barham, Waco; two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Thornton, Hillsboro and Mrs. Margaret Jordan, Blooming Grove; two brothers, R. O. And Phil Barham, both of Blooming Grove; a sister, Mrs. Dan Burnham, Athens; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and other relatives.
Pallbearers were Sam Barham, Roy Kennedy, Nick Barham, Herman Barham, Joe Barham, and Robert Barham.

R. S. Denn, 73, retired carpenter, 105 South Thirty-Fifth street, died Thursday morning at the M. D. Anderson clinic in Houston following a short illness. He had been at the clinic for several days.
Funeral arrangements were incomplete early Thursday afternoon.
Surviving are his wife of Corsicana; two sons, Sam Denn, Thornton, and Ed Denn, Corsicana; five daughters, Mrs. Patty Grantom, Wichita Falls; Mrs. Juanita Gorkowski and Mrs. Ernestine Melton, both of Arizona; Mrs. Rubine Johnson, Rogers, Ark, and Mrs. Billie Hartley, San Antonio; a number of grandchildren; two brothers, Jim and Simon Denn, both of Frost, and a sister and other relatives.

A retired carpenter, Denn, 72, died in the M. D. Anderson clinic Thursday following a short illness.

He was born Feb. 16, 1890, in Montgomery county.

Surviving, other than his widow of Corsicana, are two sons, Sam Denn, Thornton, and Ed Denn, Corsicana; five daughters, Mrs. Patty Grantom, Wichita Falls; Mrs. Juanita Gorkowski and Mrs. Ernestine Melton, both of Arizona; Mrs. Rubine Johnson, Rogers, Ark., and Mrs. Billie Hartley, San Antonio; a number of grandchildren; two brothers, Jim and W. B. Denn, both of Frost; one sister, Mrs. Lessie Seabolt, Louisiana, and other relatives.

Pallbearers will be members of the Men's Bible class at Fellowship Baptist church.

Benjamin Dave "Stookie" Allen

Ben Allen Rites Friday
A native Corsicanan who gained national fame as a cartoonist, Ben Dave "Stookie" Allen, 67, died Wednesday at his Fort Worth home. He was a retired art engineer for General Dynamics Corp.
Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Guy Allen of Corsicana, he was the creator of the cartoon strip "Mugsey" which was nationally syndicated and he and his late wife, Gladys Parker Allen, were co-creators of the cartoon strip "Flapper Fanny". He also was the author of several books, and served as a major in the Army Engineers in World War II. They lived many years in New York City while writing their cartoon strips.
Allen was known as a "colorful character" in Corsicana at the University of Texas where he was both a baseball varsity player under "Uncle Billy" Duch and was the hero of the 1924 Texas A&M game when he caught the touchdown pass that gave Texas a 7-0 victory over the Aggies in the first game played in Memorial stadium between the arch rivals.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Corley Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Eugene Wood officiating. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery.
He is survived by three aunts, Mrs. Vallie Simon and Mrs. Belle Reagan, both of Lubbock and Mrs. T. A. Platt of Fort Worth; one uncle Rex Shirley of Lubbock; and one cousin Miss Billie Gunter also of Lubbock.
Pallbearers will be Ed. M. Polk, his baseball battery mate at the University of Texas, Dave Kelton, Sadie Ransom, Gerald McClung, Rip Lang, Jack Cunningham, J. M. Dyer Sr. and John Corley.

Randall Barham

Barham Found Dead in Home
Randall Barham, 77, retired building contractor, was found dead in his home Wednesday morning by a nephew who had gone by to check on him. Coroner Howe French returned a verdict of death due to heart failure. He was advised by relatives he was a heart patient. He had been dead several days, and from opened mail on the dining room table and his bank statement. Coroner French placed date of death Jan 1.
French said a nephew, Dough Beauchamp had assumed he was out of town since Barham's car was not in the garage as he had driven past on several occasions. On learning early Wednesday the car was in the garage for repairs, he went to the residence and found his uncle dead.
Funeral services were held Thursday at 2 p.m. in Stephensville at the Garden of Memories Cemetery.
He is survived by two nephews, Beauchamp and Dr. Stacy Barham; and three nieces, Mrs. Mabel Kloecker and Mrs. Marie Johnston, both of Corsicana, and Mrs. Helen Nutt of McKinney.

KERENS (SP) Joe D. Stevenson, 67, died in Memorial Hospital Wednesday. He had resided at Rt. 1 Kerens for about 22 years and had been employed by Farmers and Ranchers Supply Co. He was a member of the First Methodist Church here.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday in the Corley Chapel for Mrs. R. M. Whitten, a native of Fort Worth, who died Thursday at Twilight Home. Dr. Ambrose Edens and the Rev. Kenneth Haley will officiate and burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Whitten is survived by two sons, Robert E. Whitten of Dallas and Marion E. Whitten of Arlington, Va.; two daughters Mrs. J. S. Dill of Corsicana and Mrs. Donald Curtis of Dallas, former Corsicana residents; 12 great-grandchildren, three nieces and four nephews.

Frost, (Sp)—Mrs. Mattie Bell Cook, 82, a former resident of Frost, died Thursday morning in a Hillsboro clinic.

The body of Clarence Norwood, aged about 42 years, who died suddenly in Borger, Thursday morning about 9 o'clock is scheduled to arrive in Corsicana sometime Saturday or Sunday and interment will be made in the Hamilton cemetery. He formerly resided here and was well-known in this section. Prior to moving to Borger about two years ago, he was in the insurance business here and farmed prior to that time. He had been in ill  health for sometime and his wife died recently. Prior to her marriage, Mrs. Norwood was Miss Dottie Gilliam [Gillen].
Surviving are several children, three brothers, Joe Norwood, Corsicana; R. C. Norwood, Ennis; S. A. Norwood, Corsicana, Route 3; two sisters, Mrs. Robert Holley, Borger and Mrs. Pryor, Pursley and numerous other relatives.

Former Corsicanan Dies Suddenly Early Thursday in Borger
According to information received in Corsicana Thursday, Clarence Norwood, former resident of Corsicana and well-known here, died suddenly in Borger, Texas on Thursday morning about nine o 'clock. Details of his death and funeral arrangements were not learned. A brother, Joe Norwood, and numerous other relatives survive.

FUNERAL SERVICES SATURDAY MORNING CLARENCE NORWOOD

The body of Clarence Norwood, aged 42, who died in Borger Thursday morning arrived in Corsicana Saturday morning on the southbound Southern Pacific passenger train and the remains were taken to Hamilton cemetery direct from the station. Funeral services were held at the cemetery where burial was made. Prior to moving to Borger a few years ago, Mr. Norwood resided in Corsicana. He was reared in Navarro county. He had been in failing health for several months.

Surviving are several small children, three brothers, Joe Norwood, Corsicana; R. C. Norwood, Ennis; S. A. Norwood, Corsicana, Rt. 3; two sisters, Mrs. Robert Holley, Borger; Mrs. Pryor, Pursley, and a number of other relatives.

J. J. Newton, 80, of 1439 West First avenue died in Memorial hospital early Wednesday night.
Funeral services will be held from the Corley Chapel Friday at 2 p.m. with burial in Oakwood Cemetery.
The rites will be conducted by Rev. Robert Wooddy, pastor of the First Baptist church, of which he  is a member and long time deacon. The Very Rev. Fred C. Wolf, Jr., rector of St. John's Episcopal church, will assist in the services.
Born, June 22, 1879, in Kirbyville, Texas, he has resided in Corsicana most of the past 45 years, although spending several years in Overton and other East Texas points.
He operated the Newton Variety store here for many years, later being in the service station business on West Fifth avenue and North Twelfth street and at the time of his retirement, was employed at the Wolf Brand Products company.
Surviving are his wife of Corsicana; three daughters, Mrs. Doyle L. West, Corsicana; Mrs. Leonard Goff, Shreveport, La. and Mrs. James Pugh, Urbana, Ill; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Hamp Newton, Bon Weir; a brother, Dennie E. Newton, Kirbyville, and other relatives.
pallbearers will be John B. Davis, Hoyt Moore, Bill Brietz, Raymond Cooper, Scott Lowry, Joe Bob Tekell, C. E. Middleton and Joe Sims, all deacons.

Dan Thornton, 83, died in Wharton Thursday morning from injuries suffered several weeks ago in an auto accident according to information received here. He is the father of Mrs. R. E. Ross of Corsicana.

Hold Rites For A. T. Watson

Funeral services for A. T. Watson, 87, retired Barry farmer and land-owner, who died Wednesday afternoon, were held Friday at 2 p.m. from the home of a daughter, Mrs. J. C. Buie, 1434 West Fifth avenue.

The rites were conducted by Rev. Marshall Strother, pastor of the Barry Baptist church, and Rev. Robert Wooddy, pastor of the First Baptist church. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery.

A native of Macon, Ga., he had resided in Barry and Navarro county since five years of age.

Watson was a member of the Primitive Baptist church and Barry Masonic lodge and was active in both until declining health prevented his attendance.

Surviving are his wife of Corsicana; three daughters, Mrs. Eda Buie, Corsicana; Mrs. Bertie Pool, Moran, and Mrs. Bessie Fields, Arlington; a grandson, Richard Kelly, Corsicana; five other grandsons, nine great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; three brothers, Marion Watson, Barry; Marshall and Homer Watson, both of Dallas, and other relatives.

A. T. Watson, 87, retired farmer and landowner, died Wednesday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. C. Buie, 1434 West Fifth avenue following a several years illness.

Our community was made sad last Sunday morning, Oct. 11 [1916] when we gathered at church at Navarro Mills and the news came to us of the death of a former resident and friend, Jas. W. Evans, of Edna, Texas, who died suddenly with a heart attack Saturday morning. Oct. 10.
Mr. Evans was born and reared here, moving to Edna about 15 years ago. He was a son of the late Captain and Mrs. W. J. Evans, early settlers of this county who made their home in the Navarro Mills community.
It is hard from us to realize Jim Evans has gone. He will be missed so much by his friends. He was of a jovial disposition, keeping his sorrows and troubles to himself.
When meeting a fellow man, he always had some good joke or a friendly greeting to make your feel glad you had met him. He was a lover of music and one of hiss joys was getting friends to gather for a good time to forget the cares of this world. We can remember so many times walking in the night to hear the sweet music of surrenders of which he was one. I can almost hear that music now. Jim Evans was a friend to everybody and his friends were legion.
He leaves a wife and one son, a brother, Will Evans of South Texas and a sister, Mrs. Eda Berry of Navarro Mills.

Prominent And Popular Citizen of Barry Called to His Reward

Dr. W. M. Fields died at his home in Barry yesterday at 2 p.m. and was buried in White Chapel cemetery this afternoon after funeral services had been conducted at the Baptist Church, of which denomination he was a member. Dr. Fields was both a prominent and popular citizen and his death is deeply and widely regretted. He leaves a wife and four children, two sons and two daughters, as follows: James W. Fields, Henry Fields and Misses Flossie and Fay Fields, aged nine and twelve years, respectively. He also has three surviving brothers, viz: J. A. Fields of Troupe, Frank Fields of Ecru, Miss., and E. G. Fields of Athens, the latter being the only brother who could reach her in time to be present at the funeral. Other relatives attending the funeral besides the immediate family were J. F. Blaylock and wife of Pontotoc, Miss., T. J. Fields, a nephew of Troupe, W. J. Wooton and wife of Midlothian.

Dr. Fields was a native of Mississippi and came to Texas from Pontotoc, settling first at Midlothian and from there went to Barry where he practiced medicine for eleven years. He was sixty-four years of age, was a Mason and was in the active practice of his profession up to the time of his death.

Surviving are a son, Thomas Brumbelow, Palacios; two sisters, Mrs. H. E. Simpson, Blooming Grove, and Mrs. Nick Green, Corsicana; a granddaughter, Mrs. Evelyn Akins, Alivn, with whom she resided; a great-granddaughter and other relatives.

ITALY, Texas, Geb. 25, - John Powell Robinson, 81, native of Hill County, for fifty-five years a resident of Ellis County, died at his home in the Lone Cedar community southeast of Italy Wednesday. His parents moved to Hill County in the early days from Arkansas. He was a first cousin of the late United States Senator Joseph Robinson. A member of the Christian Church, he is survived by his wife, and the following children; Ed Robinson of Lone Cedar, Mrs. Nellie McCord, Dallas; Mrs. Gracy Boyd, Odell; Mrs. Jennie Shepperd, Odell, and John Robinson, Fort Worth; a brother, Joe Robinson, Kerens. He was buried in the Lone Oak Cemetery near Blooming Grove.

AGED LONE CEDAR MAN DIED TUESDAY BURIAL WEDNESDAY BLOOMING GROVE,
Feb. 25.— Funeral services for J. P. Robinson, aged 82 years, of the Lone Cedar community, who died Tuesday, were held Wednesday afternoon at Lone Oak. He was a native Texan and had resided in the Lone Cedar community for the past 50 years. Surviving are his wife, two sons, Ed Robinson, Lone Cedar, and John Robinson, Fort Worth; three daughters Mrs. Wylie Sheppard, Lone Cedar; Mrs. Knox Mc- Cord, Dallas, and Mrs. John Boyd West, Texas; 45 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

BROTHER OF CORSICANA WOMAN DIES IN OKLAHOMA

BLOOMING GROVE—Jul. 3 — (Spl.)—Will T. Reid, age 47, years died at 7 o’clock Friday morning en route to a veterans hospital at Muskogee, Okla. He had been in ill health for some time. The body was removed from the train at Atoka, Okla., and will be returned here for burial.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock from the Central Baptist church. The rites will be conducted by Rev. J. N. Gardner, pastor of the Central Baptist church and Rev. J. W. Hartfield, Methodist minister.
Mr. Reid was born in Mississippi but had resided in Texas several years. He was a World War I veteran.
Surviving are four brothers, John M. Reid, Blooming Grove; J. W. Reid, Allen, Okla.; Tom Reid, McAllister, Okla.; Bob Reid, Bartlesville, Okla.; four sisters, Mrs. Ada Smith, Corsicana; Mrs. C. N. LAST RITES FOR W. T. REID ARE HELD HERE SATURDAY

Will T. Reid passed away at an early hour Friday morning, July 3.
Leaving Blooming Grove on the afternoon before, for a veteran's hospital at Muskogee, Okla., although greatly weakened by the insatiable appetite of illness, he seemed strong enough to make safely the trip, but within a hundred miles of the destination the nurse noticed he was lapsing into a state of lethargy from which she could not get reaction. The soul passed out. He was confortably situated on the train enroute to the hospital; a trained nurse by his side and the entire train crew working together for his comfort and, it seemed, speeding up for the hospital.

The body was sshipped back to Blooming Grove and on Saturday afternoon of the 4th at Presbyterian church very impressive and appropriate funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. M. Gardner of Central Baptist church and Rev. Whitefield of the Methodist church. It was an overflow gathering of loved ones. Not only relatives from distant points were present, but friends as well from points in other counties came to pay homeage tot he memory of a wonderfully great nature.

"Will," as we all knew him, was in the zenith of settled manhood, being
47 his last birthday. He was born at New Albany, Miss., came to Texas as a boy of 15. He made his home in the John M. Reid (a brother) home.
He graduated from the Blooming Grove public schools with the class of 1909. In various capacities he was connected with Reid's drug store, represented for many years and to his death the Dallas News as local circulator, was a world war veteran, was postmaster under the Hoover administration and a member of the Presbyterian church, also a Mason.

Surviving him are: Four brothers and four sisters, namely, Mrs. Ada Smith, Corsicana; J. M. Reid, Blooming Grove; J. W. Reid, Mrs. C. M.
Means, Mrs. Harry Hensle, all of Allen, Okla.; Mrs. Tom Anglin, HOldingville, Okla.; T. J. Reid, Moskogee, Okla., and R. P. Reid, Bartletsville, Okla.

The career of no man whom the writer ever knew was a finer exemplification of sincere, unselfish, and devoted service to his fellowman than that of William T. Reid. He was not ostentatious. Being modest, refined, gentle in manner, you had to know him well to appreciate him fully. There was none so quick as he to respond to very call of human (part of this is missing due to someone cutting out an article on the next page) champion of truth and justice, and his brave heart never faltered in the defense of the right as God gave him to see the right. Instinctively he rebelled against every form of wrong and oppression. The cry of distress, the appeal of the helpless and the unfortunate, thrilled his soul like a fortunate, thrilled his soul like a bugle call and kindled into life all of the passionate fires of a matchless character.

Will Reid was never guilty of an unjust, an unkind, or an ungenerous act. There was nothing vindictive in his nature. He was free of all malice and was ever ready to cover with the mantle of charity the frailties and shortcomings of his fellowman. One seldom, if ever, among the laity, meets with a gentler or a kindlier soul. The warmth of his genial personality dispelled the mists of gloom and radiated sunshine and good cheer wherever he went. We are thinking how of the words of Philip James Bailey: "We live in deeds, not years; in thoughts, not breaths; in feelings, not in figures on a dial."

Will Reid was practical in every way. He loved and mingled in good society. He had his friends. He loved politics, loved Nature clothed Nature's way, and he loved the open-loved with passionate fondness the blossomed rose in all its gorgeous beauty; loved the trackless footprints of the brook, loved the songs of wild birds and lingered when convenient to drink deep of the melody of the old cow bells in the shaded pasture. He loved in a broad way his country, and there was no rock upon its hillsides, no wave that kissed its shores, no blade of grass upon its prairies for which he would not have yielded his heart's "ruddiest drops."

These words from John Temple graves: "I have seen the lightning flash across the storm-swept sky till night and darkness and the shadow-haunted earth gleamed with noonday splendor, and I have thought the spettacle grand. I have seen the light come over the eastern hills in glory till leaf and tree and blade of grass sparkled like myriad diamonds in the morning, and I hae thought that it was grand; but the grandest thing, next to the radiance that flows from the Almighty's throne, is the light of a noble and beautiful life shining in benediction upon the destinies of men and finding its home at last in the bosom of the everlasting God."

The hearse to Rose Hill cemetery was followed by many, many automobiles filled with relatives and friends. The mound was literally covered with wreaths and flowers, and as we turned to go away a friendly rain-cloud eased overhead to sprinkle the bouquets and keep afresh the beautiful wreaths marking the resting place of the body of our departed friend.

Former City Marshal Dies

BLOOMING GROVE, Navarro Co., Texas, Oct. 30 - T. H. Butcher, 73, died at his home here Thursday. Funeral services will be held Saturday at the First Christian Church. Butcher was a native of Indiana and came to Texas in 1889. He served twenty years as City Marshal. Surviving are his wife; four sons, H. A Butcher of Austin, W. A. and J. A. Butcher of Dallas, and E. H. Butcher of Los Angeles, Calif.; and three daughters, Mrs. V. E. Sweeney of Waco, Mrs. R. A. Dunaway of Montgomery, Ala., and Miss Vera Butcher of Blooming Grove.

PROMINENT CITIZEN PASSED AWAY THURSDAY AFTERNOON

Tillman Howard Butcher, aged 73 years, died Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at his home in east Blooming Grove. Funeral services were held saturday morning at 10:30 at the Christian church by Rev. J. W.
Whitefield, pastor of the Methodist church. Interment was made in the Rose Hill cemetery.

T. H. Butcher was born in Bloomington, Indiana, december 12, 1862. He came to Texas and settled in Ellis county, moving to Blooming Grove in 1888. He was united in marriage to Miss Susie N. Anis in Ellis county July 1, 1888. Mrs. Butcher died Sept. 3, 1902. The deceased was married the second time to Tennie O'Neal in 1905. Surviving are his wife, four sons: H. A. Butcher, Austin; W. A. and J. A. Butcher, dallas, and E. H. Butcher, Los Angeles, Calif.; three daughters, Miss vera Butcher, Blooming Grove: Mrs. V. E. Sweeney, Houston; Mrs. R. E.
Dunaway, Montgomery, Alal, and 11 grandchildren.

For more than fifty years Mr. Butcher had been one of the foremost citizens of Blooming Grove. He served as city marshall for several years and was in the blacksmith business for many years He was honest, truthful and square in all of his dealings with his fellow man and a kind and generous husband and father. Blooming Grpve has lost a good citizen in the passing away of this worthy man.

Pallbearers were J. R. Griffin, Gordon Suton, Earl Brown, seth grant, Roy Langston and J. D. George. The McCormick Funeral Service had charge of arrangements.

ITALY, Texas, Feb. 18 - A. Roebuck, 89, ex-Confederate soldier and Italy's oldest citizen, died here Monday afternoon. Born in Alabama, he came to Ellis County fifty years ago. Funeral services will be held at Italy Tuesday morning and the body will be taken to Blooming Grove for burial.

FORMER RESIDENT BLOOMING GROVE BURIED HERE SUNDAY

Mrs. Johnnie B. Jones age 62, and long time resident of Blooming Grove who died at Erick, Okla. Friday, was buried here Sunday afternoon. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock conducted by Rev. P. W. Utley of Waco, assisted by Revs. Hearon of Richland and J. W. Whitefield, local pastor.

Mrs. Fannie Jones had lived the greater part of her life here. She was a long-time member of the Methodist church, a devout Christian and her friends were numbered by her acquaintances. The love and esteem in which the deceased was attested to by the many beautiful floral offerings.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Grady Elms of Erick, Okla.; a grandson, Richard Elm, and one brother.

Pallbearers were: R. L. Harris, Corsicana; J. W. Harris, W. E. Huffstutler, H. P. Ivey, Bob Mabry and W. G. C. Ingram.

The funeral arrangements were under the direction of the McCormick Funeral Service.

NAVARRO COUNTY FARMER FOUND DEAD IN ROOM AT HOTEL

The lifeless body of E. S. North, aged 56 years, well known farmer residing northeast of Corsicana, was found in his room at a local hotel Saturday morning, at 2:30 o'clock by a friend. He had been dead for some time.

Officers are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of North.

There is a possibility that an autopsy will be held.

The body will be taken to Blooming Grove where funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, with interment in Rose Hill Cemetery at Blooming Grove. Mr. North had resided in the Blooming Grove community for many years.

Surviving are eleven children. Mrs. D. L. Batson, Dallas; Mrs. A. Y. Meadows, Frost; Earnest North, Mrs. A. R. Freeman Rueben North. Everett North, Lillian North, Cleo North, Luther North, Hazel Ruth North and Geneva North, all of the Blooming Grove community; one brother, W. S. FUNERAL SERVICES AT BLOOMING GROVE FOR E. S. NORTH

Funeral services for E. S. North, 56, well known farmer of the Blooming Grove community, whose lifeless body was found by a friend in his room at a local hotel early Saturday morning, were held at Blooming Grove Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock where interment was made.

ROBERTS, - Blooming Grove, Texas, Sept. 27 - S. A. Roberts, 83, died Tuesday morning. He was one of the first settlers of this community and was for many years, director in the Citizens' National Bank, has served as school trustee, as City Councilman and for a number of years was chairman of precinct conventions here.

PIONEER RESIDENT OF BLOOMING GROVE DIED ON TUESDAY

BLOOMING GROVE, Sept. 26, —(Spl.)—S. A. Roberts, aged 83 years, pioneer resident of this community and formerly postmaster here died Tuesday morning at 4 o'clock after an illness of several months. The funeral will be held from the family home Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

He was born in Livingston Parish, La., in 1850 and came to the Blooming  Grove community in 1870.

Mr. and Mrs. Roberts celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, recently.

Surviving are his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Edgar Spikes, Blooming Grove; Mrs. Cal Sitton, Blooming Grove; Mrs. Tom Holman, New Mexico; and a son John Roberts, Longview; and number of grandchildren and other relatives.

The funeral services will be conducted by Rev. P. L. Shuler, Methodist minister, and Rev. E. L. Jones, Baptist minister.

McCormick Funeral Home will have charge of the arrangements.

Victim of Shooting Dies From Wounds

CORSICANA, Texas, Sept. 21 - Monroe Samples, 48, of the Blooming Grove community, died at a local hospital Monday night from gunshot wounds, received near Blooming Grove early that morning. The body was taken to Blooming Grove.

Lloyd Hollifield was released on bond of $750 on a charge of assault with intent to murder filed Monday in Judge Ben Carroll's court at Blooming Grove. Sheriff Rufus Pevehouse said the charge would be changed to murder.

Eliot, - Corsicana, Texas, Jan. 17 - The body of G.W. Eliot, who died at Sherman, was buried in Grape Creek Cemetery after funeral services were conducted at the home of his son, Edgar A. Eliot, in this city this morning. He leaves the following children; Mrs. J. H. Birge of Sherman, Mrs. W. E. McElvery and Mrs. W. T. Stewart of Oklahoma, Edgar A. Eliot of Corsicana and George Eliot. The deceased had been a resident of Navarro County for more than fifty years.

PASSED AWAY IN SHERMAN.

Former Navarro County Citizen Will Be Brought Here For Burial.

Geo. W. Eliot, Age 86 years, died in Sherman yesterday afternoon at 4 o’clock, death coming as a result of old age. The remains will arrive here tonight at 10:30 over the Houston & Texas Central and interment will take place at 11 o’clock tomorrow in the Grape Creek Cemetery, about ten miles south of here.

The deceased came to Navarro county in 1850 from Tennessee and resided in the Grape Creek community until four years ago, when he went to Sherman to live with his daughter, Mrs. J. B. Birg.

Besides this daughter, the deceased is survived by a son, Edgar Eliot, of Corsicana.

He was a Confederate Veteran and a devout member of the Methodist church, and in all the walks of life did his duty as a man, and was universally esteemed by all who knew him.

REMAINS WERE INTERRED

A Navarro County Pioneer is Laid Peacefully at Rest.

The remains of the late G. W. Eliot arrived here last night at 10:30 from Sherman and were taken at once to the home of his son, Edgar A. Eliot, 1131 West Collin streets, and the funeral took place from there at 9:30 this morning, with interment at Grape Creek near where the deceased spent fifty or more years of a busy life.

Many friends were there to pay their last respects to one whom they had known and esteemed for many years, Rev. W. J. Hearon officiated and many pretty flowers were placed about the last-resting place.

The deceased leaves five grown children, Mrs. J. H. Birge, of Sherman; Mrs. W. E. McElvery of Oklahoma; Mrs. W. T. Stewart of Oklahoma; Edgar Eliot of Corsicana, and George Eliot whose residence is not known here.

Howard Chester Minyard, 79, passed away Friday, February 15, 2008 in Houston at the Houston Hospice. He was born on July 14, 1928, in Decatur to Chester and Merle Minyard. He grew up in Corsicana, graduating from Corsicana High School in 1945. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Texas A and M in 1950, and was a member of the Corps of Cadets. Following graduation, he joined the United States Army where he served as an artillery officer. His service included a deployment to West Germany during the Cold War. Following his Army service, Howard joined Mobil Pipe Line Company in 1953. In his 31 year career with Mobil, Howard rose the ranks and completed his service at the Mobil headquarters in Dallas. A highlight of his career was his participation in the opening of the Alaskan Pipeline. On March 15, 1953, Howard married Inez Marie Scott, and they were blessed with four sons. Howard was a very unselfish man and was never known to complain. Howard was an avid reader and was very knowledgeable of the world and its affairs, especially the energy industry. Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Merle Minyard. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Inez Minyard; sons and their wives, Scott and Debbie, J. R. and Vicki, Bill and Karen and Tom and Michelle; grandchildren, Chris Petty, Melissa, Kelsey, Jessa, Jake, Chris, Tommie and Colton. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18 at the Knesek Bros. Funeral Chapel, 768 4th St., in Sealy. Graveside Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19, at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston. Leon Stough, 86, of Corsicana passed away Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008 in Corsicana. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Corley Funeral Home. Mr. Stough was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, and was a life member and past commander of VFW Post 3366. He was a 50 year plus member of the Masonic Lodge. He owned and operated Stough Beauty Shop for 40 years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Jennie Stough; two sisters, Bertha Cox and Jimmie Harper; and four brothers, Walter, William, Charles and John R. Stough. Leon Stough

Mr. Leon Stough, 86, of Corsicana passed away on Saturday, February 16, 2008 in Corsicana. He was born on December 9, 1921 in Blooming Grove, Texas.
He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, and was a life member and past Commander of the VFW Post 3366. He was a 50+ year member of the Masonic Lodge. He owned & operated Stough Beauty Salon for 40 years. He was a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Brother, and Friend.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Monday, February 18, 2008 at Corley Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at the Corley Funeral Home Chapel with Father E. Dennis Smart officiating. Interment will follow in the Resthaven Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Zane Stites, Bobby Johnston, Jim Stough, David Johnston, Skip Tullos, Pat Kindle, and Jeff Flores. Honorary Pallbearers will be Julius Flores, Dr. James Witten, Leonard Fuller, Dr. Charles I. Biltz, and Mack Thomas.

Mr. Stough was preceded in death by his Parents; William & Jennie Stough, Sisters; Bertha Cox and Jimmie Harper, Brothers; Walter, William, Charles, and John R. Stough.

Mrs. Mattie Snow Dies In Dallas

Mrs. Mattie Snow, 75, of Emhouse, died early Saturday morning at 4410 Maple Drive, Dallas, while visiting relatives.

Funeral services will be held from the Emhouse Methodist church Sunday, at 2 pm. Burial will be in the Pattison cemetery.

Surviving are a son, James R. Snow, a daughter, Mrs. Pearl Nipper, and 2 grandchildren, James W. Smith and Miss Linda Sue Snow, all of Dallas; two brothers Robert L. Hopkins, Shelbyville, TN, three sisters, Mrs. Hattie Taylor and Mrs. Ann Lawrence both of Brownville, TN, and Mrs. Pearl Greenway, Almo, TN, and other relatives.

Pallbearers are Swint Huling, Stokes Armstrong, Charlie Joe Armstrong, A. E. Beard, Dick Dixon and John Gillen.

Corley will direct.
