Mary Jo (Sims) Zabcik
Aug 11, 1921 - Nov 5, 2009

Mary Jo Zabcik, 88, of Tyler and formerly of Corsicana, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at Grace Care Center of Houston. A beloved widow and mother, sister, sister-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a friend to many entered into God's kingdom after suffering from congestive heart failure due to complications from a recent surgery. Mrs. Zabcik was born in Temple on Aug. 11, 1921. As a young child, she had a passion for music, particularly the piano. In 1943 she graduated from Mary Hardin-Baylor University majoring in music education. She married Edwin J. Zabcik on March 21, 1944, and began her career teaching music and marching band to high school students in Giddings. Her ambition as a private piano teacher began in Woodville where she also served as the full-time organist for First Baptist Church. Following her husband's job transfers, she served as the accompanist for First Baptist Church in both Palestine and Paris, Texas. Her career also expanded to teaching elementary music from 1958 to 1968 in both Texas locations. In 1968, Mary Jo moved to Corsicana and taught grade level classes for several years with CISD. After retirement, she taught private piano, served as a pianist for her Sunday school class, and enjoyed singing with the "Solid Rockers" of First Baptist Church in Corsicana. In her later years, her greatest joy was providing piano accompaniment for various nursing homes throughout Corsicana. While in Corsicana, Mrs. Zabcik was also an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Kinsloe House, The Literary Club, Texas Retired Teachers Association, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and a supporter of the Mary Hardin-Baylor Alumni. Favorite pastimes included playing the piano, working crossword puzzles, singing in the church choir, and staying in touch with friends. She was most proud of two awards: International Hall of Fame of Music Guild of USA and the Alumni Award from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Mary Jo was a faithful and longtime member of First Baptist Church in Corsicana. After relocation to Tyler, she joined Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler and became an active member of the singing group "Highest Praise."She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin; and parents, Joe and Mary Ann Sims. • Although this obituary came out in the August 4, 1939 Blooming Grove Times, it was a reprint from  Volume I, No. 19, Page Two of the Friday, October 17, 1890 Blooming Grove Rustler.  The Rustler had been donated to the Times, so they decided to re-print it one page at a time.  They determined from this donated copy that the Blooming Grove Rustler's first publication was June 27, 1890. • I do believe that this is actually John Mason Childress that is listed in Cryer Creek along with his wife and a son.  His dates should be 1819 - Oct 13, 1890 because the paper came out on a Friday.

Gary Gillen
Aug 15, 1941 - Nov 9, 2009

Gary Gillen, 68, of Lakeland, Fla., went to be with the Lord Monday, Nov. 9, 2009, due to heart failure and a long battle with cancer. Gary was born Aug. 15, 1941, in Blooming Grove to C.L. and Zola Gillen. He was a loving husband, father and brother, a good friend and neighbor. He was a generous man and cared for others. He worked for the Texas Department of Transportation and retired after 33 years of service. In 2004, Gary and Pat moved to Lakeland, Fla., from Austin to take care of Pat's mother until her death in 2008. He was a deacon at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Lakeland. In 2005, he battled cancer and subsequently, the next five years suffered severe continuing health problems. He accepted his tribulations and continued to praise the Lord until his death. He was an encouragement to others. I thank God for the additional five years we had together. In Austin, Gary and Pat had been members of the First Baptist Church of Oakhill and they enjoyed working there many hours. He was preceded in death by beloved son, Stacy Cole Gillen. He leaves to mourn him his wife of 43 years, Pat; brother, Paul (Paula) Gillen of Corsicana; sisters, Betty (Delton) Raley of Dawson and Wanda (Jimmy) Harris of Blooming Grove. I wish to thank family, friends, and neighbors who supported us with love and prayers during this long, hard journey. What a wonderful life we shared. We buried our son together but also had so much happiness and laughter in our life. Some people bring joy when they come into this world, others when they leave it. He was my joy; a light has gone out in my life. I will always be his "Babe." Special thanks to Dr. Luis Franco and staff at Center for Cancer Care for their kind care these last five years. Thanks also to Good Shepherd Hospice for their caring assistance. She graduated from Mexia High School in 1946 and attended North Texas State Teachers College (now University of North Texas). She and her husband Bob R. Frisby met at Hubbard High School functions and married Nov. 25, 1949, in Mexia during his senior year at Baylor University. They retired in Austin since their oldest daughter, Robin, and later Amy were University of Texas fans and eventually graduates. They moved to Corsicana in 1979 to be near Martha's aging parents, and a sister and brother because they were attracted to Corsicana with its small town flavor and proximity to the DFW Metroplex. Martha's travel yen was almost satisfied by their assignments to the Philippines, Germany, and Greece, with side trips to France, England, Holland, Spain, The Holy Land, Liechtenstein (spent five days in world's smallest country because Amy had strep throat), Switzerland, and Italy. Since moving to Corsicana they traveled to Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, all of the Baltic Sea countries, including Russia, Finland, Sweden, and Norway, and were still thinking of traveling down the river to the Black Sea, but didn't get around to it. In addition to travel, Martha as an incredible cook, great housekeeper and decorator, piano player, and sang alto in many military base officers club and church choirs, including St. John's Episcopal Church and First United Methodist Chancel Choir in Corsicana. She was a wonderful mother of Robin (Mrs. Jeff) Fuller of Show Low Ariz., and Amy Starling of Corsicana, and grandchildren, Rachel Sherman of Phoenix, Ariz., Anna Sherman of Show Low, Ariz., Joshua Starling of Dallas, and Alyssa, Abby, and Annie Starling, all of Corsicana. She is also survived by her sister, and sole survivor of six siblings, Nell Marshall of Beeville, and sister-in-law, Jean Montgomery of Victoria, and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom were dear to her heart. No man ever had a more loving, caring wife than Bob Frisby, just short of their 60th anniversary. Visitation will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15, at Corley Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16, at First United Methodist Church with Steve Moss officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Hubbard.
