Rev. O. E. Permenter

The Rev. O.E. Permenter, resident of Corsicana, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday afternoon, Aug. 12, 2011, at age 87.

He was born in Center, Texas, on Jan. 30, 1924, to Claude O. Permenter and Annie Mae Kimbro Permenter. O.E. served his country in World War II in the United States Army and the Merchant Marines. He earned a scholarship to play football at Stephen F. Austin State University, where he received a bachelor's and a master's degree. On June 23, 1949, he married Genell Godley in Cayuga, Texas, and he taught school and coached for six years. He answered God's call to the ministry and received a Master of Divinity Degree from the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1960. For 50 plus years, he pastored churches in Oklahoma, Texas, and Maryland. During his entire ministry, he was devoted to mission work. He led and participated in mission trips in the Rio Grande Valley, Mexico, Belize, and Haiti, helping those in need.

O.E. was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, C.O. Permenter and Bill Permenter.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Genell Permenter of Corsicana; daughter Cinda and Marcus Melton of Blooming Grove, and son Mark and Selma Permenter of Arlington; grandchildren and spouses Julie and Drew Barfield of Arlington, Shellie and Ryan Razloznik of San Antonio, Zack and Brittany Melton of Waxahachie, Sara Permenter of Arlington, and great granddaughter Samantha Melton of Waxahachie. Also, he is survived by two sisters, Faye Thornton and Shirley Stockwell, both of Dallas, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011, at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug., 15, 2011, at First Baptist Church in Corsicana with the Rev. Danny Reeves, the Rev. B.F. Risinger, and the Rev. Tony Neal officiating. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Calvin Knauth, Billy Willingham, Jim Brondstadt, R.M. Bowden, Blaine Johnson, and Wayne Rose.

Mrs. Jerrie Sue French went to be with her Lord and Savior after a long battle with cancer on Friday, Aug. 12, 2011.

She was born Dec. 29, 1957, in Corsicana to Harold and Nelda Sue Hollifield. She was a loving wife and mother. She was a nurse for 33 years caring for many patients with love.

Survivors include husband Ricky French of Dawson; son and daughter-in-law, Ricky and Marybeth French of Midlothian; brother, Harold Glenn Hollifield of Corsicana; sisters Dana Colvin and husband Jay of Kerens, Shauna Duke and husband Josh of Kerens; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, 2011 at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home.

Service will be 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 15, 2011 at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be at New Pursley Cemetery.

Graveside services for Josie McClendon were held at 2 p.m. Satuday, Aug. 13, 2011 at Waco Memorial Park in Waco, with the Rev. Bill Hoffman officiating.

Mrs. McClendon passed away Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011. She was born June 5, 1914, in Frost, a community forever dear to her heart. She was the daughter of William Jackson Benton and Josephine Ivy Benton. Mrs. McClendon was a registered nurse for 40 years, retiring in 1975 from the Schumpert Cardiac Unit. She was a resident of Shreveport since 1962 and an active member of First Baptist Church Shreveport.

Mrs. McClendon was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ernest Ross Greenlee; husband, Vasco Houston McClendon; and son-in-law, Edward Bean.

Survivors include two daughters, Martha Bean, and Gloria Smith and husband, Ivan. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Eleanor Benton. Mrs. McClendon is further survived by six grandchildren, Melinda Bean Voda and husband Jan, Robert Bean and wife Sue, Lisa Smith Hodges, Ivan Smith III and wife Ashley, Emily Smith Genovese and Jonathan Ross Smith and wife Lauren; and nine great grandchildren.

Bobby Allen McAfee, Jr., 59, of Angleton, passed away Monday, May 9, 2011.
Bobby was born September 9, 1951 in Corsicana, TX to Bobby Allen, Sr. and Johnnie Nell McAfee.
Huck loved fishing and listening to music.

Visitation will be held Thursday, May 12, 2011 form 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Palms Funeral Home, Angleton, TX. Funeral services will be Friday, May 13, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Palms Funeral Home. Burial will be at Matagorda Cemetery in Matagorda, TX at 3:00 p.m. on Friday.

He was preceded in death by his father, Bobby A. McAfee, Sr. Survivors include his mother; Johnnie N. Reandeau, children, Bobby A. McAfee, III, Shannon McAfee, Julian McAfee and Jennifer McAfee, grandchildren, Chantz McAfee and Gage McAfee, brothers, Danny McAfee, Hal McAfee and Dennis McAfee.

Jordan Faith Wilson, daughter of Paul and JoLynn Wilson was born August 29, 2011 at 10:21 p.m. and slipped peacefully into the arms of Jesus at that time. She was welcomed to Heaven by big sister, Molly Paige; her Pepaw, David Garland; aunt Kristine Stark Girouex; cousin Tori Jade Peavler; and great-grandfathers H.H. Garland, Joe Coleman, and Odie Stewart.

Left behind to miss and love her are her parents, Paul and JoLynn; grandparents, Alan and Randy Wilson of Corsicana and Glenn and Jody Blanchard of Rice; her aunts and uncles, David and Aileen Wilson of Grand Prairie, Joel Garland of Burleson, Lisa Hawkinson and Danny Townley of Corsicana, and Nancy and Jeff Barton of Ardmore, Okla., Teresa and Chris Cuthbertson of Austin, and Tim and Debbie Gorden of Carrollton; cousin, Haley Garland of Corsicana; and great-grandmothers, Lola Coleman, Ruby Garland, and Ruby Stewart all of Corsicana. In addition she is mourned by Aunt Molly, Uncle Richard, Ben and Sammy Barlow of Chatfield, and God parents, Chad and Kimberly Freeze of Corsicana. Jordan has cousins too numerous to list here, but they know how important they are to us.

The family wishes to thank the magnificent nursing staff on the third floor of Navarro Regional Hospital. Their kindness and excellent care are so appreciated. Also, we thank Dr. Bill Cook for his heroic measures during this time. His expertise, his loving spirit, and amazing care will never be forgotten.

Thank you to our prayer warriors for their unwavering support as they stormed the gates of Heaven on Jordan's behalf. Last, but not least, we thank the wonderful people of the Navarro County Sheriff's Department and Rice Independent School District.

Private services will be conducted by Pastor Rick Lamb on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011 at Marshall Cemetery in Corbet, Texas under the direction of Corley Funeral Home.

Mrs. June Deskin Humphries, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, August 30, 2011, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was 94 years old.

June was born in Bazette, Texas, on June 29, 1917, and lived in Corsicana most of her life. For the past ten years, her home was with her daughter, Shelby and son-in-law Gil in North Richland Hills, Texas.

She loved her morning cup of coffee and the quiet times spent reading her Bible at the start of each day. Her favorite pastimes were reading Christian books and playing cards around the table with her family. She attended church at North Richland Hills Church of Christ with her daughter and son-in-law until her health declined.

She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Ray Humphries, and daughter, Shirley June Humphries.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Shelby June Montalvo and husband Gil; granddaughters, Angela June Hines, Paula Rae McPeters and Sandy Mahoney; grandson, Rick Montalvo; and great-grandchildren, Taylor Heaton, Cory Hines, Shaun McPeters, Shannon McPeters, Dawson McPeters, Ashley Montalvo, Brittini Montalvo, Zachary Mahoney, Melissa Mahoney, and Matthew Pavlovich.

Sarah Louise Hinkle, resident of Fort Worth, passed away on Saturday morning, Aug. 27, 2011, at her residence at the age of 73.

She was born on July 12, 1938 in Corsicana to Raymond Worsham and Geneva Watson Worsham.

Sarah is preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers, James and Jerry Worsham.

Survivors include her children, Holley Anthony of Fort Worth, Brian Hinkle and his wife Karen of San Antonio, and Kelly Wessels and her husband Jeff of Cleburne; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Rayneva Marr of Barry, Ray Worsham of Nacogdoches, Patsy Gorden of Barry, and Charles Worsham of Barry.

Graveside services will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Aug, 30, 2011, at Pattison Cemetery in Emhouse with Bro. Grady Cashion officiating.

James Lewis Hollingsworth, Sr.
Aug 24, 1922 - Aug 28, 2011

Lewis Hollingsworth, 89, of Hillsboro passed away Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011 at Providence Health Care Center in Waco.

Lewis was born in Raleigh, Texas Aug. 24, 1922. He attended school in Blooming Grove, graduating in 1940. There he met Imogene “Jean” Shell and they were married Sept. 14, 1942. He then served his country during World War II as a member of the 82nd Airborne, where he was in the Glider Infantry. He fought battles in Germany, England, France and Holland, including the Battle of the Bulge. Lewis was a highly decorated soldier. Among his many medals, and the one of which he was most proud, was the “Silver Star Medal.”

At the age of 14, Lewis went to work for the funeral home in Blooming Grove digging graves. This step would lead to a lifetime of service as a funeral director and embalmer. Following the war, Lewis completed mortuary school and received his embalmer's license in December of 1948. During the 1950's he worked with Marshall & Marshall in Hillsboro before purchasing his own funeral home in Itasca. He owned and operated Hollingsworth Funeral Home in Itasca until he sold it in 1972 and it became Clayton Kay Funeral Home. Over the next three decades he assisted at many area funeral homes including another tour with Marshall & Marshall and also Porter Funeral Home in Mexia until 2009.

After his retirement, he owned a real estate business and also helped his wife, Jean, managing rental properties, and as owners of Shell's Ladies Wear in Hillsboro, which has been in continuous business since 1956.

Lewis was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Ethel (Lewis) Hollingsworth; brother, Charlie Lee Hollingsworth; and son, Joe Don Hollingsworth.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Hollingsworth of Hillsboro; son, Jim Hollingsworth and wife Doris of Whitney; sisters, Bernice Prater, Mavis Lusk, and Odessa Smith all of Blooming Grove; and three grandchildren, Shelley Hollingsworth, Ryan Hollingsworth and wife, Tiffany, and Jayme Cox.

Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2011 at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2011 at Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors Chapel in Hillsboro with Rev. Vivian Sumrow officiating. Burial will follow at Ridge Park Cemetery in Hillsboro.

Beverlye June (Jones) Jones
May 3, 1938 - Aug 27, 2011

Beverlye June Jones of Corsicana passed away suddenly at her home Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011 while tending to her beloved yard, trees and plants.

She was born May 3, 1938 in Coolidge, Texas to Henry Alonzo and Gertie Mae Armstrong Jones. Her husband and Coolidge High School sweetheart, James (Jim) Doyle Jones, also born in Coolidge, Texas, preceded her in death and had promised to meet her at the gates of heaven when she got there. She and Jim were active for many years in the Texas Lions Club. She was active at First Baptist Church of Corsicana, where she was a member. She enjoyed and always spoke fondly of her friends from her Sunday School class.

She was mother to Sheryl Guardiani of Alexandria, VA, and Jayson Jones of Katy, Texas; and grandmother to Daniel Guardiani, also of Alexandria, Va., and Joseph Jones of Hunstville, Texas.

There will be a short burial service Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011 at the Coolidge Cemetery Chapel at 10 a.m. All who knew Beverlye are welcome to attend.

To honor her and celebrate her life, there will be a Memorial Service held in the First Baptist Church Corsicana Chapel at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011, followed by a reception in the church fellowship hall.

Frances (Bowden) Weaver

Frances Bowden Weaver, 89, went to be with the Lord Monday, Aug. 29, 2011. She was born Aug. 7, 1922 in Tupelo, Texas and married Dale E. Weaver in 1949. She graduated from Rice High School and attended Business School.

Our precious Mother and Nanny loved her family only second to the love she had for her Lord and Savior. She delighted in making your favorite food and she did it well. Frances was a humble, servant-hearted person who loyally loved all those around her and served them unconditionally. She was the definition of a caregiver. She was a longtime members of Fielder Road Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Dale Weaver; parents, John and Leona Bowden; brothers, Scott Bowden, J.R. Bowden, and Bobby Bowden.

She is survived by her son, John Weaver and wife, Debi; daughter, Elayne Ruthart; grandchildren, Stephen Schultz, Lindsey Ruthart and Courtney Weaver; brother, Jack Bowden and wife Mary Helen; sisters-in-law, Ann Weaver and Charlene Bowden; and cousins, nieces, nephews and many loved ones.

Visitation with the family will be held Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2011 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Corley Funeral Home, Corsicana.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011 at Rice Cemetery with Rev. Jerry Morris officiating.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011 at Fielder Road Baptist Church, Arlington.

Pallbearers are Scott Bowden, Tom Bowden, Stan Hicks, Dick Ruthart, Ken Ruthart, and Stephen Schultz.

B. Jeff Stone

Mr. B. Jeff Stone, age 75, of Corsicana passed away on Friday, Aug. 26, 2011, at Trinity Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler.

B. Jeff Stone was born in San Antonio on April 24, 1936. He is the youngest of three boys born to parents, Aaron and Elaine Stone. He grew up in San Antonio where he attended two high schools — South San Antonio and Southside; he also attended San Antonio College.

B. Jeff Stone was interested in music from an early age. His mother purchased his first guitar when he was eight years old; it was a Silvertone sold by Sears-Roebuck. After many broken strings and months of getting on the nerves of family and friends, he learned the basic chords and progressions and has been playing the guitar since!

In his early teens, Jeff played and sang at school programs and began writing music at 18 years of age. When he was 18, he carried his songs and guitar to Charlie Fitch who owned a small record company (SARG) located in Luling, Texas. With all the confidence in the world, he walked in and told Mr. Fitch that he wanted to record some of the songs he had written. Charlie laughed and invited B. J. to sing some of them. Fitch was impressed and asked if he would record two of the compositions. One side of the "45" was "The Clown" and the flip side was "Everybody Rock".

In the late 1980s, ACE Records in England purchased the master and rights and again released the music on their London label; this was some 30 years after having been recorded by Stone. A short time after the London release, a label in Sweden purchased the master and released the music for the third time on their label.

Jeff teamed up with a fiddle player in San Antonio who was looking for a guitar player to "make music" most anywhere they could! In those days "ice houses" (now called convenience stores) always had an area for customers to sit at tables and listen to music from the jukebox or from live entertainment (who would play for the "kitty" - a cigar box where customers could drop change). Stone recalled the money was always pretty light saying: "A good night would be $5 to $10 and then we'd have to split it!"

At about the same time, Jeff approached Doc Parker who owned a radio station in Pleasonton, Texas (KBOP) - Willie Nelson and Johnny Bush were both working at the station at the time - and asked if he could have a 30-minute live radio show on Saturdays. After an audition, Parker agreed and the show was called “Jeff Stone and His Cut-Ups.”

After a stint in the U.S. Air Force, Stone returned to San Antonio determined to have a career in music. He organized “The Westernairs,” a five-piece country band, and enjoyed success in the San Antonio area. The door finally opened when Nashville producer, Tommy Hill asked him to come to Nashville for a recording session. Stone recorded four of his own compositions, one of which became a national hit, "Hey, Little Newsboy." Because of the success of the song, Jeff's band changed their name to “The Newsboys.” With hand-picked musicians, Bobby Stone (as he was known then) toured and played across the U.S. with his band. The many locations included Las Vegas, the LBJ Ranch during his presidency, clubs, fairs and rodeos. He had a new booking agent, Billy Deaton, who was also managing Faron Young at the time.

Working on the road and managing a band became an ordeal and to slow down, Stone broke up his band and began working as a single act, touring and working with such greats as Marty Robbins, Willie Nelson, Jim Ed Brown and other legends. Jeff has starred on many albums produced by the U.S. Air Force, recorded in Nashville, and aired throughout the United States. He formed Newsboy Publishing in the 1960s through B.M.I. which he still owns.

In 1974, B. Jeff went through a burn-out period. In a recent interview he said: "I was tired and the excitement was gone that I had always felt when I walked on stage. I didn't feel the music and each performance became a chore. I realized it wasn't fair to the fans or myself." And the entertainer, that Marty Robbins once said would be one of the top country artists someday, walked out of the spotlight. B. Jeff started his own construction company, one that grew to be successful.

In 1981, while attending a high school reunion, Jeff met and became reacquainted with Patricia Berry, his first "girlfriend" and the girl he had dated through high school. B. J. offered: "I loved her back when we dated and that flame ignited again when I saw her!" B. Jeff and Patricia married October 2nd of that year and lived in Fort Worth until 1985 when they moved to Corsicana, Texas, where they still reside and enjoy the friendly people and small town living. They own Stone Properties, a real estate investment business.

In 1995, with the love of music still intact and a desire to record again, B. Jeff called his old friend and record producer, Tommy Hill, in Nashville to get his thoughts on cutting a new album. They released “Everybody Loves Me” on Tommy's label (HILLTON) and distributed the ten-song CD in Europe. There was a big question mark in the mind of B. Jeff: "After 21 years, will my music be accepted?" After all this time, knowing that country music had gone through a drastic change, it was Jeff's opinion that many of the artists were nothing but a cast of young look-alike imitators! The question was quickly answered when play lists and letters of acceptance from European country radio came in on a daily basis. B. Jeff was back!

“Everybody Loves Me” became album of the week in England and numerous cuts crowded the European charts. "A Good Woman's Love" became a mainstay, being one of Europe's favorites. The song was one of B. Jeff's biggest hits to that date with his "Hey, Little Newsboy" running a close second, hitting Number 2 in the U.S. charts. B. Jeff recalled: "The good songs come to you in the blink of an eye; it's as though the good Lord is sending you a message. I wrote "Hey, Little Newsboy" on a napkin while having lunch at a San Antonio restaurant. "A Good Woman's Love" came to me one night while returning home from a performance." The title cut "Everybody Loves Me", another of B.J.'s compositions, became Europe's Number 9 album and made B. Jeff Stone the fourth-most-played artist in Europe.

In 1996, Stone came back with his second album, “Something's Going On,” a CD which was again released in Europe but on his own label, Gold Crest International. Stone says: "I have never liked recording on other labels; there are too many draw-backs! You never know where your music is being played or what it is doing; you are only handed bits and pieces of information from busy record representatives. The incoming mail is seldom seen and I am a firm believer that any mail from country radio stations or fans should be answered. The biggest problem, in my opinion, is that you have no control over your destiny!"

From that 1996 release came "The Other Side of Town" which hit European charts and was listed high in the World's Top 500 (all types of music). Bringing chuckles from millions was "Honey Do" another hit that incidentally became the DJ's "rest" song because of it's five-minute play time. "Starlet Angel" and "Patricia's Song" (a song written for his wife) were also chart makers. Again, all four songs were penned by B. Jeff Stone.

In 1997, B&T Records in Georgia was putting together a compilation CD (numerous artists) and asked me to participate. "I was hesitant at first knowing that it was like being thrown into a bag of marbles and getting lost in the confusion. We were working on a new album at the time and knowing that the release date was a while off, I decided to include a song I had recently written and recorded, "Hello, Mr. Heartache". That song was on the compilation and on the new album; it has become my biggest hit."

In 1998, B. Jeff changed the name of his label to Nashville Gold Records, a title befitting the new album “Texas Country” which produced three major hits. "Texas Country Boy" reached the number one spot in Scandinavia and was number two in all of Europe. "The Blizzard" became number one in Scandinavia and in Europe. "Hello, Mr. Heartache" held the number one spot in Europe for an unheard-of sixteen weeks. The album became one of the Top Country Albums of 1998.

The release of B. Jeff's fourth album, “Stone Country,” was in 1999 which produced a number of hits including another number one, "Mary Ann Regrets". B. Jeff Stone won ten major country awards in 1999. He was named Europe's number one Traditional Country Artist by E.C.M.A.

With the Nashville album, “Stone Tradition, the year 2000 was destined to be another great year for B. Jeff Stone. He was inducted into Florida's Greater Southern Country Music Hall of Fame and that same year, Jeff was inducted into the European ICMAG Country Music Hall of Fame. In 2001 he was inducted into the Texas-Lone Star State Country Music Hall of Fame. In 2002, he was nominated for the Colorado Country Music Hall of Fame.

Roy A. “Sonny Man” Jenkins, 71, passed away Friday, Aug. 26, 2011, at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler.

He was born March 12, 1940 to Roy J. and Loma Donnely Jenkins in Kerens.

Roy was a real “man's man.” He loved to hunt, fish, fellowship at the Masonic Lodge and build things with his hands. If Roy couldn’t fix what was broken on his own then it just wasn’t fixable. He loved his wife and children will all his heart and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Roy “Sonny Man” Jenkins was a building contractor by trade and spent many years in the construction business.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Survivors include his wife, Katherine Ivie Jenkins; children, Pamela Richardson, Roy Lynn Jenkins, Rusty Pegues and wife Tanya, Cheryle James and husband Ricky, and Pam Peacock and husband Brent. Roy is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews.

Lena “Ozell” Jones Schmidt died Friday, Aug. 26, 2011, at the age of 75 with her husband, George, by her side.

She was born in Navarro County to Ray Adlee Jones and Lena Hickey Jones on Jan. 28, 1936.

Ozell was a graduate of Corsicana High School class of 1954. She worked in the medical field for 12 years in Odessa; worked for the S&L firm in Arlington for four years and for eight years worked in the Driver's License Department in Corsicana and retired in 1996 due to health issues.

While living in Odessa, Ozell met her soul mate, the love of her life, George John Schmidt. They were married on Feb. 14, 1965, at the Church of Christ in Odessa and was given in marriage by her brother, Ray Jones. This past Valentine's Day marked their 46th anniversary. She was a faithful member of Westhill Church of Christ. After many years of patiently waiting she became a grandmother in March of 2005 and then again in February of 2009. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She had a passion for cooking and got great enjoyment from feeding and entertaining her family and friends.

Ozell was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Lena Bell Jones; three brothers, Robert Jones, Carl Jones and Herman Jones; one sister, Olivia Jones; and her oldest son, George John Schmidt II.

Survivors include her loving husband, George Schmidt of Corsicana; one son, Kevin Don Schmidt and his wife Rene’ of Florida; and the lights of her life, two granddaughters, Kristen and Krystal Schmidt of Florida; two brothers, Ray Jones and his wife Connie of Hot Springs, Ark. and Paul Jones and his wife Cindy of Kerens; one sister, Linda Roughton and her husband Bill of Corsicana; two sisters-in-law, Helen Rizzo and Hertha Wright; and one brother-in-law, Carl Schmidt; numerous nieces and nephews on both sides of her family, the Jones and Schmidts.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2011, at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2011, at Westhill Church of Christ with Sam Dilbeck officiating. Interment will follow at the Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery.

He was born Oct. 1, 1936 in Marquez, Texas. Lavern worked most his life on the farm, and worked many years at Clifford Williams’ farms.

He was preceded in death by his father, Louis Ross Sr.; mother, Susanna West Ross; wife, Leola Brown Ross; and by five siblings.

Survivors include five sons, Lavern Ross Jr., Jimmie L. Ross (Sandra), Raylen Ross (Mattie), Delbert Ross (Mattie), and Robert Ross; daughters, Rose Mary Pippins (Robert), and Dorothy Mayberry (Larry); brothers, Larry Ross, Raymond Ross, and Louis Ross Jr., all of Dallas; sisters, Ruby Hailey, Joyce McCoy, Lurlee Smith, Vertie Mae Green and Susa Lee Lakes, all of Dallas; many grandchildren and many relatives and friends.

Mr. Manuel Martinez passed away Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011 at Navarro Regional Hospital with his family at his side. He was born in Stamford, Texas July 30, 1932. Manuel was a self-taught musician who went on to form “Manuel's Orchestra” and played at various functions. His love of music has been passed down through his children to many of his grandchildren.

Manuel moved his family to Corsicana in 1965 and was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He was a kind and generous person who gave what he could to those in need. He was known for his keen sense of humor and colorful storytelling. Over the years, he diligently built his solid reputation as a successful auto paint and body shop owner. Manuel's Paint and Body Shop was established in 1967 and continued until his retirement in 2002.

Manuel was preceded in death by his parents, Angela and Refugio Martinez; a son, James Martinez; a sister, Mary Martinez; and granddaughter, Brandy Dickerson.

She was a very loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. She worked as a seamstress for many years.

Anna Gene Hall Spurlock, 75, of Kerens, died peacefully in her sleep Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011 at Legend Oaks Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility in Ennis, Texas.

Anna was born July 25, 1936 in Paris, Texas to Eugene and Gladys Hall. She was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church in Kerens where she shared her musical talents with others she loved and her Lord and Savior. Anna taught school for 38 years in the Kerens Area and also sponsored cheerleaders, drill team and year book. She loved spending time with her family, friends and students. She will be remembered for her cooking, hospitality, and unconditional kindness and love for others.

Anna was preceded in death by her parents; sister-in-law Mary Earl and brother-in-laws William Harold Hill and Kenneth “T-Bone” Stovall.

Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Ottis Ray Spurlock of Kerens; daughter and son-in-law Sandy and Mike Ball of Ennis; grandchildren, Wade Ball of Stephenville, Wes Ball and Paige Ball of Ennis; sisters-in-law Dixie Hill of Perryton and Ruby Stovall of Kerens; brother-in-law Robert J. “Red” Earl of Ennis.

Oma Lavois Wallace passed away Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011 in Abilene, Texas having resided there since 2003. She was born July 9, 1924 in Red Oak, Texas to Lonnie W. Rudd and Oma Purvis Rudd. The family moved to Elm Flat, Navarro County, Texas when she was 7 years old. Lavois was a proud 1941 graduate of Kerens High School.

On Aug. 24, 1945, Lavois married Herbert Weston Wallace. She and Weston enjoyed 57 years of marriage before Weston's death in 2002.

For over 50 years, Lavois was a member of the First Baptist Church in Kerens, where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. She was church secretary from 1959 through 1988.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Lonnie and Oma Rudd; her husband, Weston; her brother, Leon Rudd; and grandson, Eric Pringle.

She is survived by her daughter Brenda Pringle and husband Terry of Abilene; son, Terry Wayne Wallace and wife Cheryl of Tyler; grandson, Michael Pringle of Atlanta, Georgia; and two nieces, Sharon Johnson and Joan Nabors.

The family would like to thank Windcrest Alzheimer's Care Center in Abilene for the excellent care they provided during her last months. Thanks also to Hendrick Hospice for their care during her last days.

LaVerne Myatt was born in Corsicana on January 30, 1923 to Robert and Mittie Thomas Harris. LaVerne passed away in Kaufman on August 23, 2011. LaVerne was raised in the Emhouse Community near Corsicana. She moved to Kaufman in 1951 and in 1956 LaVerne became the first secretary for Kaufman High School. Later she began working for Jackson Title Company in Kaufman. LaVerne retired from Jackson Title and later worked for the Kaufman Appraisal District for ten years. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Kaufman. LaVerne married Herman Fletcher Myatt on December 2, 1949 in Fort Worth. Herman preceded her in death on April 12, 2004. LaVerne is survived by her daughter: Kay Wilson of Kaufman, sister: Frances Mahoney of Corsicana, granddaughters: Lisa Aulds and Laura Throneberry, great grandchildren: Justin, Throneberry, Jake Throneberry and Kaylee Aulds and many other relatives and friends. Ronald Glynn Sears, 74, of Corsicana, passed away Monday, Aug. 22, 2011 surrounded by his loving family, after a brief illness.

Ronnie was born Sept. 19, 1936 in Brownfield, Texas to Elmo and Clara Sears.

At the age of 16, Ronnie joined the United States Navy. Upon his discharge in 1957, he went to work in the Texas oil fields. Later, Ronnie enlisted in the Sea Bees and retired from the military in 1984 as a decorated veteran. He proudly served his country throughout the world including the Korean War and Vietnam conflict.

Ronnie is survived by his wife of 39 years, Jeanette Sears of Corsicana; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Karla Brady of Corsicana, Jeff and Cheryl Brady of Royse City; five grandchildren, Jason and Brooke Scoggins, Jessica and Nehemiah Rankin, Chris and Haley Goodman, Samantha Brady and Brandon Goodman; mother, Clara Wilcox of Springfield, Mo.; brothers, Dwayne and wife Jan Sears of Ft. Carol Jock, age 70, passed away Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011 at East Texas Medical Center in Fairfield. She was born Feb. 8, 1940 in Corsicana to Joe and Julia Burleson.

Carol enjoyed collecting antiques. Nursing was her occupation, working at Memorial Hospital and West Park Row Nursing Home in Corsicana. She was a homemaker, wife, mother and nurse, but most importantly a Christian. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Blooming Grove and later a member of Unity Baptist Church in Corsicana.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father; and her brother, Don Burleson.

She is survived by a son, Chris Jock and wife Susan; a daughter, Teresa Watkins; a sister, Judy Greene; a sister-in-law, Jean Forbus; five grandchildren, Ashley and Joe Aaron Watkins, Brett Ryan Jock, Dustin Tyler Jock and Cloye Danielle Jock; two great-grandchildren, Brooklyn and Wyatt Fullerton; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Visitation with the family will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2011 at Corley Funeral Home.

Stephanie Melton Brittingham, resident of Blooming Grove, Texas, passed away Friday, Sept. 2, 2011. She was born in Dallas to Bob and Jo Melton. Stephanie was a graduate of Texas A&M University and taught middle school for 16 years in Mansfield and Ennis ISD. She was a member of the Blooming Grove United Methodist Church. She was a beloved daughter, loving wife, devoted mother and also an avid animal lover, adopting countless strays during her life.

She was preceded in death by grandparents Edward and Laura Melton. She is survived by husband Michael, their children Matthew and Ava, and parents Bob and Jo Melton all of Blooming Grove. She is also survived by her sister Jennifer Melton and niece Annie of Golden, Co. and a number of extended family members and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011 at the Blooming Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Nancy T. Summers officiating. Mr. M. R. “Sam” Page, age 68, of Corsicana passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2011 at Heritage Oaks West in Corsicana. He was born on June 19, 1943 in Meadow to parents John Larkin Page and Cora Dell Lamb.

He was a very loving father, son, brother, and a friend to many. He worked as an electrician for a number of years. He obtained his peace officer certification, and worked as a reserve officer with the Corsicana Police Department for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Larkin and Cora Dell Page;, and a brother, John Page.

He is survived by his Sons, Jim Larkin Page of Dallas, Joe Page and wife Denise of Corsicana, and Sammy Jean Page of Corsicana, and a grandson that is on the way., Sisters, Rosetta Jahner of Knoxville, IA and Gloria Smart of Conway, AR., and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation with the family will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. On Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at Corley Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 8, 2011 at the Corley Funeral Home Chapel with Deacon Lewis Palos officiating.

POPULAR YOUNG LADY KILLED IN AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT IN AUSTIN
With songs of love and faith which told of eternal life, joy and happiness in the realms of the Great Beyond, and with words of prayer for her departed spirit and condolence for the family,
relatives and friends, the body of Miss Martha Murchlson, age 18, young and beautiful, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Murchlson of this city and a student of the State University at Aus-
tin, who lost her life there in an automobile accident Saturday night, found its final resting place just before noon today on a sunny slope at Oakwood cemetery.

Long before the hour set for the funeral, hundreds of friends of the girl and famil y gathered at the family home, 406 South Fifteenth street and at 10:30 o'clock admittance to the house was impossible, while great throngs stood in groups about the lawn and awaited the removal of the body. Automobiles occupied every available parking place from Seventh to Ninth avenues and were stationed up and down the ntersecting across streets.

Great Throng of Mourners
Men and women prominent in society and commercial affairs mingled with student bodies and expressed their grief at the departure of one so young in such a horrible manner. Many high county and city officials were present and stood in awe stricken groups and talked in hushed voices. Mothers held their own daughters in fond embraces as if to keep off a similar catastrophe. Elderly men stroked the hair of young girls as if to bless them and keep them whole.

It was not until the cemetery was reached that some of the stronger men let their emotion get the better of them and with bowed heads cried and were not ashamed.


Surrounding the grave stood the honorary pall bearers, all young girls dressed in white and each holding great bouquets of flowers, while on a bench at the head sat the mother, father, and children.
Rev. E. K. Porter, pastor of the First Methodist Church read the burial rites and led the prayers. Mrs. P. C. Townsend, Mrs. Henry Robbins, Edgar Metcalf , and Loyd Kerr rendered the songs that accompanied the body to the grave. A large truck was used to carry the floral offerings from the home to the cemetery and the flowers were placed by loving hands on the casket about to be lowered.

Another prayer was said, another song was sung and the body of Martha Murchison was committed to the grave.

Many From Out of Town


Tho funeral was attended by a large number of out of town students, some of them acting as honorary pallbearers. Telegrams of sympathy were received from all over the State. Home of the girl's student chums came up from Austin to see their friend placed away. Ed. M. Polk Jr., who was present when the accident occurred and who completed the preliminary arrangements for the shipping of the body, drove the car containing the family to the cemetery. Mrs. Josephine Murchlson, mother of the father , with her daughters, Miss Laura Murchison and Mrs. J. H. Sparks came up from San Antonio. Mrs. Bell came from Waco and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Polk and family were there from Fort Worth.

A. L. Lotspeich, father of Corinno Lotspeich, who was injured in the same accident that that took the life of Miss Murchison was present and said that his daughter suffered a broken thigh just below the socket of the right hip, but was doing nicely at the hospital where she is cared for by her mother. Mr. Lotspeich stated that several X-ray pictures had been made of his daughter's injury and that she would be kept in the hospital for several weeks.

Active pall bearers were J. N. Edens, P. Mayor, A. G. Elliott, Chas. Jester, Jess Eubank and Max Almond.
The young ladies escort to tho active pall bearers included; Tabby Jackson, Elizabeth Callicutt, Janie Hamilton, Lorine Miller, Bess Kirvin, May Bright Elliott, Louise Thompson, Helen Conner, Francis Dunn, and Aline Reese, all of Corsicana, and Melissa Davis, Margaret Roderick, and Baldwin Woods, of the Southern Methodist University of Dallas, and Alice Beaton, Helen Bass,
Margaret Meacham, and Lucertia Hodges, all of the State University at Austin.
Other honorary pallbearers were: Ben F. Ha: tell, Dr. H. B . Jester, R.L. Hamilton, A. P. Young, Joe Young, O, L. Albritton, Dennis Crews, Bush Wofford, L. A. Pinkston. J. J. Berdson, H. C. Immediately following tho ceremony at the home, the pall bearers assembled along the walk in front and others carried the flowers from the house to the waiting truck. The escort composed of young girls were first in line from the house.
The pall hearers came forth with the casket, Rev. Porter proceeding. The casket was placed in the hearse and the slow drive to the cemetery began.

At the cemetery a canvass top was spread over the grave and under this the family and relatives, together with pall bearers assembled.
Following conclusion of the burial services, friends crowded round the family and expressed their sympathy through tear dimmed eyes. The girl students from Austin were overcome with grief at the sad spectacle and crowded around the mother and in choked voices spoke of the daughter, their friend.
Through it all, Rev. Porter was serene and comforted the father and mother with words of cheer of their departed love.

Miss Murchison was a student of the Corsicana high school and graduated here last year. Following is some of her school record in Corsicana: Athletic Association '17, '18, '19; Gardening Club, '17, '18; Latin Club, '17, '18; Nonsul Major, '18; Thrift Club '18; Glee Club, '19), '20, '21; Secretary Freshman Class, '18; President Junior Class '20; "CORSICAN" Sophomore editor, '19; Assistant editor, '20; Editor-In chief, '21; "Trial of the American Girl," '18; "Gypsy Rover", '19; "Miss Cherry Blossom," '21; F. A. T. A., '18, '19, '20.

That she was popular is best attested by the large number of her former school mates who attended the funeral.

Funeral services for John S. Bunch, aged 70 years, who died suddenly at his home in Humble Friday night with a heart attack, were held from the Corley Funeral Home Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery. The rites were conducted by Dr. P.E. Riley, pastor of the First Methodist Church.

Mr. Bunch was formerly a resident of Corsicana and was employed at the Mgnolia refinery here for many years.

Surviving are his wife of Humble; a daughter, Mrs. John L. Puckett, Miami, Fla.; a brother, M.D.L. Bunch, Corsicana; three sisters, Mrs. Walter Welborn, Humble; Mrs. G.G. Owen, Emhouse, and Mrs. Wallace Donaho, Corsicana, and other relatives.

Pallbearers were Edgar Metcalf, F.C. Paul, Jim Jackson, E.E. Babers, Earl Pike, Elmer Howard, W.B. Waddell, Wiley Burdine and T.J. Walton.

BROTHER CORSICANA MAN DIED SUDDENLY ON FRIDAY NIGHT

John S. Bunch, aged 70 years, died suddenly from a heart attack at his home in Humble at 7 o’clock Friday night. Funeral services will be held from the Corley Funeral chapel at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery. Dr. P. E. Riley, pastor of the First Methodist church, will conduct the rites.

Mr. Bunch was a former resident of Corsicana and was an employee of the Magnolia Refineray for years.

Funeral services for Mrs. F.H. McIntosh, aged 71 years, 503 North Twenty-Sixth street, were held from the Corley Chapel Sunday at 2 p.m. Mrs. McIntosh died Friday afternoon in the Navarro Clinic.

The rites were conducted by Dr. W.M. Shamburger, pastor of the First Baptist church. Burial was in Oakwood cemetery.

Surviving are two sons, Harold McIntosh and Prentice Durwood McIntosh; two daughters, Mrs. J.T. Blasingame and Mrs. R.M. Lowry; and a grandchild, all of Corsicana; two brothers, Jimmy Kinman, Clay, La., and Mrs. Lawson Hinton, Ruston, La., and other relatives.

Funeral services for Samuel H. Coffey, aged 68 years, who died suddenly at his home, 711 East Ninth avenue, Saturday morning at 5:30 o'clock, were held Monday morning at 10 o'clock from the Chapel of the Corley Funeral Home with interment in Oakwood Cemetery.

He had resided here for many years and was engaged in the plumbing business.

Surviving are his wife, three daughters, Misses Emma, Rose Marie and Lora Belle Coffey, all of Corsicana; two sons, Rube and Burnett Coffey, both of Hobbs, N.M.; two sisters, Mrs. Sallie Tacker, Corsicana, and Mrs. Katie Mapley, Lee Springs Tenn.; three brothers, Jack Coffey, Lee Springs, Tenn.; and P.G. and Golden Coffey, both of Missouri and other relatives.

Funeral services for Mrs. B.H. Barnette, aged 78 years, resident of Corsicana 45 years, who died at the Navarro Clinic Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. were held from the Griffin Funeral Chapel Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery. The rites were conducted by Rev. Herbert G. Dudley, pastor of the First Christian church, of which Mrs. Barnette had been a long and active member.

Mrs. Barnette was a native of Indiana.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Percy Blackburn, Corsicana; a son, Tom Collier, Shreveport, La.; two sisters, Mrs. W.R. Nutting and Mrs. J.F. Stice, both of Gainesville; two grandchildren, Mrs. Bill Clowe, Austin, and Charles Collier, University of Utah, Ogden Utah; and a number of nephews and nieces and other relatives.

Died at White Chapel
Daniel Yoe, aged 63 years, who had made his home with Walter Hamilton and family for a number of years died there Saturday night and the remains were interred in Oakwood yesterday
afternoon at 4:30 o'clock. Rev. W. T. Allmon officiating, and Norbert Crow, Paul Crow, James Burkholder, Murray Basham, Walker Green and Millard Spurlock acted as pallbearers, and there were many pretty floral offerings and a large attendance at the last sad rites.
The deceased was a bachelor and had no relatives. He came to Texas from California near ten years ago, and had made his home with Mr. Hamilton for all that time. He was a quiet and pleasant companion and was highly esteemed by all who knew him.
