Wednesday. She had been a resident of Dallas since 1943.
Services were to be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Paschal Funeral Home
here. Burial was to follow in the
Kerens City Cemetery.
The Rev. Van Houser, pastor of the First Baptist Church was to
officiate.
Survivors include her husband, J. H. Simmons of Dallas; two
daughters, Mrs. Charles Miller of Lancaster and Mrs. Joe Johnston of
Dallas; one sister, Mrs. Allie Peters of Malakoff; three
grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Nephews were to be pallbearers.

KERENS-Funeral services will be here at 4 p.m. Saturday at the First
Baptist Church for former Kerens, resident Sherri Lynn Bruner, 17,
of Ferris, who died Thursday in a Dallas hospital from injuries
received Tuesday in a car-train accident in Wilmer. Officiating will
be Rev. Charles Pringle, Rev. Van Houser and Rev. Royce Campbell.
Burial is to be in Kerens Cemetery under the direction of Green
Funeral Home, Ferris.
Born Jan. 7, 1960 in Hawaii, she had been a resident of Ferris since
1974. She was a student at Ferris High School where she was active
in the Future Homemakers of America, the National Honor Society and
the band. She served as editor of the school newspaper. She was a
member of the First Baptist Church in Ferris and served as president
of the girls� choir.
She is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Bruner of
Ferris; a sister, Miss Sindy Lea Bruner of Ferris; a brother,
Charles Robert Bruner of Ferris; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. M. H.
Smotherman of Purdon and Mrs. V. D. Bruner of Kerens; and a
great-grandmother, Mrs. C. E. Bruner of Kerens.
Pallbearers will be Charles Fulton, Carl Watson, Joe Wilson, L. D.
McElhaney, Weston Wallace and Joe Chapman.
The body will lie in state at Green Funeral Home in Ferris until 10
p.m. tonight, and then Paschal Funeral Home in Kerens until time of
the funeral.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers. Memorials may be made
to the Youth Center at the First Baptist Church in Ferris or the
building fund of the First Baptist Church in Kerens.

Funeral Chapel for O. C. Alexander, 74, of Purdon who died Monday in

Alexander is a native of Bastrop County and had lived in Purdon
since 1934. He was a blacksmith and a welder.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. O. C. Alexander, Purdon; one son,

Houston, Mrs. Katherine Sanders, Pinehurst, Mrs. Neva Thomas,

grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-children; one
sister, Mrs. C. E. David, Lufkin.

She married Willis Cleveland Ruffin Feb. 4, 1906 of Alma Community.
He preceded her in death in 1959. She moved to Ennis after his death
and made her home with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. D.
D. Day of Ennis. Forth past two years, she lived with her daughters
in Deer Park.
She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ennis.
Survivors include five sons, Cecil Ruffin and Thurman Ruffin both of
Alma, T. R. Ruffin of Ennis, W. C. Ruffin Jr. of Sweetwater, and
Jack Ruffin of Torrance, Calif.; three daughters, Mrs. C. E. Bell of

retired Athens merchant, died in Athens Friday night.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the

The rites will be conducted by Rev. Sam Carilli, pastor and Rev. Lee
Ramsour, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Athens.
Albritton was in the grocery and market business in Athens for 15 years prior to retiring because of ill health three years ago.
Surviving are his wife, two sons, Douglas Jack and Joe Nathan Albritton; a daughter, Helen Jane Albritton, all of Athens; a
brother, Allen Albritton, and a sister, Mrs. Tommy Upchurch, both of Kerens and other relatives.

Mrs. L. M. Morris a former resident of this community but later of Kerens, passed away at the sanitarium in Waco last Tuesday night,
and the remains were brought here and laid to rest in the Bazette
cemetery Wednesday afternoon at four o�clock. Bro Vinsant conducted the funeral services. The deceased husband, 3 daughters, 3 sons and
2 sisters and a brother and a host of relatives and friends to mourn her absence. The community extends their-heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family.

Farmer Said to Have Shot Wife and Himself Today

Kerens, Texas, Nov. 30�A tragedy took place near Rural Shade today which has shocked the entire community. According to reports
received here M. L. Morris, an apparently well-to-do farmer, shot his wife and then turned the same weapon on himself.
Mrs. Morris, at last accounts, was still alive but Morris, it is said, died immediately following the firing of the fatal shot into
his body.
Rural Shade is south of Kerens several miles and a negro man reaching here this morning from the Morris home with a number of
turkeys in a wagon, heard the report of the tragedy on reaching Kerens. The negro said that Mr. Morris had aided in loading the
turkeys in the wagon and sent them in to be sold. The negro said that he had not at any time seen any indication of any kind of
difference between Mr. and Mrs. Morris.
The weapon used is said to have been an automatic 45-calibre pistol.
Mrs. Morris condition is reported to be serious. Her sister, who is teaching in Corsicana and rooming at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. C.
Hughes received a message this afternoon notifying her of the tragedy and left at once to be with her sister.

was able to help him to his bed after he had shot himself, and then telephoned her mother, who lives about a mile away, that she had
been shot. The remains of Mr. Morris were interred at Bazette this afternoon. The deceased had one of the finest farms in that section
of the country and is survived by five children by a former marriage.

Estelle Bennett, known to all as �Dood,� went to be with the Lord on
Friday, Aug. 8, 2014 at the age of 94.
She was born Nov. 21, 1919 in Hayworth, Oklahoma, to William Aron
Mason and Emma Buck Mason. In 1939, she married Buren Benard
Bennett. They lived on a farm between Powell and Kerens with their
two children, Martha Louise and Gary Benard. Homemaking was a joy to
her, and she loved to cook, can fruit and vegetables, and sew. She
helped with the farming, hauling cotton to the gin and taking care
of everyone in the fields. In the early 1970's, she also trained as
a beautician and ran her own beauty shop in Kerens for several
years. She was an active member of Powell Baptist Church, where she
loved doing the flower arrangements, helping with Vacation Bible
School, and providing food for any occasion.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Emma Mason;
brothers Alvin �Nub� Mason and James A. Mason, and her husband,
Buren.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Martha and George
Frocke; granddaughter, Celeste Frocke; son and daughter-in-law, Gary
and Sondra Bennett; grandsons, Matt and Jake Bennett; niece, Fredia
Ann Mason Steen and her husband Harold Steen, and nephew, Rick
Mason.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, 2014 at Griffin
Roughton Funeral Home in Corsicana.
Service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014 at Griffin-Roughton
Funeral Home. Interment will follow at
Resthaven Memorial Park.

Kerens cemetery. The rites

Bates, 71, of Corsicana, Texas passed away at Baylor
University Medical Center in Dallas on Tuesday, Aug. 12,
2014 surrounded by his loved ones. He was born June 18,
1943 in Corsicana to Warney Clifton Bates and Willie
Bennett Robinson Bates.
Don was a loving, caring dad, grandfather, and friend.
He was a major Dodger baseball fan and kept everyone in
stitches with his jokes on Facebook. He was a generous
giver to not only family and friends but strangers
alike.
He worked at Chatanooga Glass for many years and after
retirement he couldn�t not work, so he became a
well-known paint contractor in Navarro County.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two
brothers; Alton Bates and Nathan W.C. Bates.
Don is survived by his wife, Estalee Bates and children;
Sanford Scott Bates and wife, Shannon of Rowlett and
Melissa Dawn Sanches and husband Clayton of Plano. Don
is also survived by his grandchildren; Preston Scott
Bates, Ezekial Scott Bates, Adyn Machiah Bates, Samantha
Claire Sanches, Levi Joshua Sanches and Zac Clayton
Sanches. He is survived by his siblings; Bill Bates and
wife Beverly, O.C. Bates and wife Jackie, and Wanda

Chastity Thornton, 40, passed away on Monday, August 11,
2014 at Navarro Regional Hospital.
She was born July 1, 1974 in Nashville, Tennessee to Ray
McKenzie Walker and Bonita Greer.
Chastity was a cheer coach in Charlotte, Tennessee for
15 years. She also was a head start teacher assistant in
Tennessee. She was a loving mother, daughter and sister.
She enjoyed swimming and loved being around children.
She was an avid Alabama fan.
She is survived by husband Michael Todd Thornton of
Tennessee; mother and step father, Bonita and George
Ivie of Powell, brothers, Dean and PK Gonzales of

 Ron
was born May 21, 1939 in Freer, Texas. He graduated from
Lutheran High School, Houston, Texas in 1957. He spent 2
years in the Army stationed in Firth, Germany. Ron was
in the first apprentice class out of International
Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 66 for
journeyman lineman in 1967. He spent the next 45 years
of his life working construction, building power lines,
making lots of friends and brothers in trade. Ron loved
his work and even after retirement kept saying "I need
to get a job...I know they can put me to work if I just
go to the hall." Ron married his wife, Bettye Freels on
December 21, 1985. They spent the early years of their
marriage in California and Oregon, working out of the
IBEW Locals in that area. In 1994 they returned to Texas
to assist in the care of both their parents. Ron once
again went to work out of Local 66. In 1996 they
purchased property in the Lanely, Texas area which they
cleared and later built their home. Ron loved being at
his home in the country, loved riding that John Deere
tractor. He was a very loving and caring person and so
enjoyed getting together with friends and family. Ron
and Bettye are members of Trinity Lutheran Church in
Fairfield.
He went home to be with our Savior on Saturday, August
9, 2014 in his home in Lanely with his wife and family
by his side. Ron was preceded in death by his parents,
Edwin and Ruth Freels and also by his nephew,
Christopher Williams. He is survived by his wife, Bettye
Freels of Lanely; son, Craig Freels and wife Kim of
Houston and Jeffrey Freels of Houston; step-daughter,
Tammy Ledford and husband Johnny of Lanely; step-son
Capt. Darrell Cobb and wife Kim of Corsicana; sister,
Valeria Williams and husband John of Houston; brother,
Dennis Freels and wife Darlene of Louisiana; grandsons,
Willum Freels of Houston and Cody Cobb of Dallas;
granddaughter, Courtney Morehead and husband Taylor,

Funeral services for Edward Lee Barnes, 80,
retired matchmaker and gunsmith, were held
Friday at 2:30 p.m. from the Corley Chapel.
The rites were conducted by Rev. M. Howard
Knox, pastor of Eleventh Avenue Methodist
church, assisted by Rev. Frank Chapman, Jr.,
pastor of the Bazette Baptist church. Burial
was in the
Oakwood cemetery.
A native of Raleigh, N.C., Barnes had
resided in Corsicana 60 years. He died at
the family home, 715 South Fifteenth street,
Thursday morning following an extended
illness.
Surviving are his wife of Corsicana; two
daughters, Mrs. J. D. Stevenson and Mrs.
Willard Sullivan, both of Kerens; three
sons, E. B., R. L., and E. Lyman Barnes, all
of Corsicana; 14 grandchildren, five

M. J. Widener, aged 81 years died Thursday morning on East

all of Corsicana and Mrs. Mert Whitener Malakoff, and a number
of grandchildren and other relatives.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday for W. B.
Gordon Bankston, who died Monday at Memorial Hospital.
The Rev. Bill Klinglesmith officiated, and interment was

A retired barber, he was a resident of Dawson and a
member of the Dawson Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. W. B. Bankston of

daughter of the late William James Lucas and Ada Meador Lucas.
Married James Hillard Allmon on May 28, 1912 and had two daughters,
Thelma Mae Allmon and Lillian Marie Allmon.
Married William Elsberry Oden May 23, 1921 and became mother to
Gladys Ruth Oden.
She was a member of Missionary Baptist Church in Corsicana.
Survivors include her husband, William Elsberry Oden of Corsicana,
three daughters, Gladys Ruth Oden Robinson, Thelma Mae Allmon Hipps
of Corsicana, Tx and Lillian Marie Allmon Hickey of Houston, Tx, six
grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren: one sister, Stella Crocker of
Downey, Calif, two nieces and two nephews.
Services will be at 2 PM Thursday at the Corley Funeral Home Chapel.
She died Tuesday January 29, 1980 a her home in Corsicana, Texas.
The Rev. Calvin Francis will officiate, with burial at
Oakwood Cemetery.

W.E. Oden, 98, of Missouri City, Texas died July 30, 1992 in
Houston, Texas.
He was born in Chicken Bristle, Navarro County, Texas on November 7,
1893. He married Pearl V. McCulloch and they had two daughters,
Gladys Ruth Oden and Iva Lucille Oden.
He married Clara Beatrice Lucas Allmon on May 23, 1921 who passed
away on January 29, 1980. Mr. Oden was a former resident of
Corsicana and moved to Missouri City in 1990.
He was preceded in death by his wife Beatrice Oden and one daughter,
Gladys Robinson.
Survivors include two daughters, Thelma "Honey" Hipps of Missouri
City, Texas and Lillian Marie Hickey of Houston, Texas; one sister,
Bertha Lunn of Corsicana; two brothers, Doyle Oden and Jim Oden,
both of Neches, Texas; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and

Jack Leslie, 80, of Red Oak, passed away Sunday, July 6, 2014 at
Baylor Medical Center in Waxahachie. He was born May 19, 1934 in
Rosoboro, Ark. to Beulah (Gill) and Jack Larry Leslie, Sr. Jack
retired from APAC Texas Bituthlic in Dallas after 34 years.
Survivors include his loving wife, Sandra Leslie of Red Oak; two
daughters, Terri Low of Sherman and Sue Norton and husband Bobby
Brown of Greenville; five grandchildren, Michelle Mynatt-Thompson,
Kristie Mynatt, Tiffany Low-Moser, Daniel Low and Geno Norton; and
seven great-grandchildren; three step-children, Theresa Jones,
Charlie Taylor and wife Teri and Jerome Green; five
step-grandchildren, and three step-great grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Beulah Leslie and one
sister, Daphine.

Corsicanan fatality in one-car accident
A 51-year-old Corsicana man was pronounced dead at the scene of a
one-vehicle accident about 1 a.m. today, after his pickup truck hit
a bridge abutment on west Hwy. 31.
Highway Patrolman Bill Bradley said Leo Brown of Rt. 1, Corsicana,
was travelling alone eastbound on W. Hwy 31 about a mile outside the
city limits when his truck apparently veered to the left side of the
road before slamming into the abutment. Bradley estimated that the
accident occurred about 12:45 a.m.
He and Patrolman Bob Turner received a call to the scene at 1:05
a.m. Peace Justice W. H. Tipton pronounced Brown dead at the scene.
Funeral will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Corley Funeral Home with
burial in the
Campbell Cemetery.
A native of Jester, Texas, Brown had lived in Corsicana 28 years. He
was a rancher and a veteran of
World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bobbie Brown of Corsicana; two
daughters, Mrs. Ronnie Owens of Roane and Mrs. Kimberly Cooper of
Corsicana; three brothers, Wayne Brown of Tyler, Percy Brown of Fort

Era Lois Pool-Sherrard (Granny) went to be with her Heavenly Father
on March 27, 2014.
Granny was a very devout and very long time member of The Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She became a member in 1952 in
San Antonio, TX and never once did her faith in God, Jesus, and the
Holy Spirit falter. Nor did her undying faith in her Church ever
falter. Granny was an inspiration to all that came in contact with
her and she will be missed, so much, by all that knew her.
She was preceded in death by her dear mother, Eva Pool; son, Thurman
D.
Pryor; and grandson, Tony Maurice Pryor.
Granny leaves behind a son, Ed Sherrard and wife Myra; grandson,
Chris Sherrard and wife Amanda, and great grandchildren Hunter,
Preston, Braedan, and Danielle.
Granny also leaves behind a grandson, Tommy Pryor and wife Cindy;
great granddaughters, Toni Donoho, Shellby Donoho and husband Tracey
Donoho; great grandsons, T.J. Pryor and wife Traci, and Aaron Pryor

Mrs. Lillie Jean Chapman, age 81, of Corsicana passed away at her
residence on March 28, 2014. She was born on May 7, 1932 in
Corsicana to Robert Winfred and Frances Lillie Fowler.
She lived her life in Corsicana and spent over fifty years as a
loving wife and mother of six children. She loved going to the
beaches and camping with her family and friends. She was always
there for her children and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, A.E. "Red"
Chapman; and three of her sons, Earl Chapman, Mike Chapman and Tim
Chapman.
Mrs. Chapman is survived by her children; Bobby Chapman of
Waxahachie, Texas, Delores Anderson of Corsicana, Texas and Diane
Rosa of Malakoff, Texas. She is also survived by her sister, Pat

Jean Murdock Price, 80, of Corsicana and formerly of
Palestine, Texas passed away peacefully with her daughter by
her side Friday, Aug. 29, 2014 at 12:10 p.m. at Country
Meadows Nursing Home where she has lived for the past few
years.A memorial Service for Erma will be held at
Legacy Bible Church in Corsicana at 212 Oakland Drive with
Pastor Michael Massey officiating on Saturday, Sept. 13,
2014 at 4 p.m., in order to celebrate her life on the day
she would have turned 81.
Erma was born in Slocum, Texas on Sept. 13, 1933 to
Odie and Dortha Murdock. Erma earned a degree in nursing and
spent 30-plus years caring for the sick. She worked in the
trauma center at Memorial Hospital in Palestine for many
years, and was a traveling nurse where she would work at
different hospitals from time to time. She was a warm and
caring lady who loved people and she loved talking to
everyone and never met a stranger that she didn�t try and
strike up a conversation. Erma loved books, and reading was
one of her passions. She loved reading her Bible due to her
deep Christian beliefs, and believed there was so much more
to life even beyond this one she knew here. She loved her
family and loved spending time with each and every one of
them every chance she had.
Erma is preceded in death by her parents Odie Murdock
and Dortha Murdock, her late husband Willie Reed (Bill)
Wright, (the father of her children), her daughter Pattie Jo
Wright Anderson, her grandson Ronnie Joe Colborn, her
granddaughter Christie Lee Honea Thorne, her step-grandson
Christopher Cummings, and so many more who have passed on.
Erma is survived by two daughters, Jeanie Kay Wright
Cummings and husband Ronnie Cummings of North Little Rock,
Arkansas, and Janet Lynn Wright Hudson of Corsicana;
grandchildren Danny Wayne Honea and wife Donna Honea of
Arkansas, Angel J. Massey and husband Michael Massey of
Corsicana, Amber Lee Andrews Baggett of Palestine, Aaron
Lynn Andrews and wife Michelle Andrews of Corsicana, Ashley
Nicole Trowbridge and husband Zack Trowbridge of Corsicana;
as well as 13 great-grandchildren and three
great-great-grandchildren.
Erma was a wonderful and very funny lady and will be greatly
missed by so many who knew and loved her. The family wishes
to express a special thank you to the staff at Country
Meadows for taking care of her and loving her like she was
one of their own, and Mercy Hospice for the care and concern
for Erma, and the family as well.

 Carl
D. Hall, 82, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014, in
Elkins, West Virginia.He was born on Dec. 27,
1931, in Long Run, West Virginia, a son of the late Bud Dee
and Beulah Gay Shaffer Hall.
Carl tried to lead his life based on the example set by
Jesus and was a member of the Boothsville United Methodist
Church. Carl was a 1950 graduate of East Fairmont High
School. Following high school, he worked for over 29 years
with the Owens Illinois Glass Company where he was a
supervisor in the decorating department. In 1979, he
relocated to Corsicana, and worked with the Chattanooga
Glass Company. He later retired in 2001 from Chevron in
Waxahachie, where he was the shipping supervisor. Carl was a
member of Masonic Lodge and became involved with the Navarro
County Peace Officers where he was a past president. He
returned to Fairmont in 2001 following his retirement. He
enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great
grandchildren, discussing politics and sports, and enjoyed
watching the Pittsburgh Pirates, Pittsburgh Steelers, and
the West Virginia Mountaineers.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years,
Linda Lou McDonald Hall, who passed away in 2010.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded
in death by a son, Jerry Hall in 1985; his three brothers,
Edwin Hall, Dale Hall, and Carter Hall; and two sisters,
Dora Voights and Mary Jo Trader.
Survivors include a son, John M. Hall and his wife
Gwen of Wichita, Kansas; his daughter, Vicki Stout of
Fairmont; two grandchildren, Heather Broadnax and her fianc�
Randall Ball of Washington, Pennsylvania, and K.C. Hall and
his fianc� Sable Weese of Fairmont; two step-grandchildren,
Robert LaGreca and his wife Ang of Toledo, Ohio, and
Nicholas LaGreca of Hutchinson, Kansas; three great
grandchildren, Maceo Green, Jason Green and Kira Hartley;
five step great-grandchildren, Wyatt LaGreca, Cody LaGreca,
Eliana LaGreca, Logan LaGreca and Josh LaGreca; and a step
great-great grandchild, Linken LaGreca.
He is also survived by his brother Carter's wife,
Carol Hall Dalrymple; his wife's three sisters, Sue Atha and
her husband Don of White Hall, Margie Spatafore and her
husband Mike of Avon Lake, Ohio, and Nancy Byard of
Fairmont; and his former exchange student from Brazil,
Rafael Garcia.
The family requests memorial donations be made in Carl's
memory to the Boothsville United Methodist Church, 379 Dean
Drive, Fairmont, West Virginia 26554.
Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014,
and 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2014, at Ford

George Wright, 90, of 1010 N. Taylor died last Saturday.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Fort Ward Baptist Church in
Ennis with the Rev. James McNeil officiating. Burial will be in

Jones Funeral Home of Ennis. Local arrangements are by Warford-Walker
Mortuary.
Mr. Wright moved to Amarillo seven months ago from Ennis. He was a
retired farmer.
Survivors include a foster daughter, James Ella Luke; two
step-daughters, Wessie Bradley of Corsicana and Lee Ann McBride of
Fort Worth; a stepson, Zera Bradley of Fort Worth; and 10
grandchildren.

He married Lota Ferguson Aug. 3, 1937. He was in the U.S. Navy in
World War II and a
member of the American Legion No. 36 in Ennis.
He is survived by his wife, Lota Bunch of Ennis; one sister and
brother-in-aw, Mr. and Mrs. M.B. Winstead of Dallas; one nephew, Bob
Winstead of Washington, D.C.; and two great-nephews, Patrick and
Matthew Winstead, both of Washington, D.C.
