OBITUARY

Mrs. Bowden, 102, Dies At Tupelo

Mrs. R. A. Bowden, 102, died Wednesday afternoon at the home of a daughter, Mrs. J. D. Burdine, at Tupelo following several weeks’ illness.

Funeral services will be held from the Rice Baptist church Thursday at 4 p.m. with burial in the Rice Cemetery. She was the last living charter member of the Rice church organized in 1879. She had been a Baptist 86 years. She celebrated her 100th birthday two years ago by attending church at Rice.

Mrs. Bowden was born Dec. 24, 1850, in Tennessee, and married the late R. A. Bowden in 1870. He died here in 1913. The couple came to Bell county in 1877 and to Navarro county the following year.

Grandma Bowden vividly remembered Civil War days as well as the Spanish-American and the two World Wars.

Surviving are seven children, Mrs. M. E. Cummins, Rice; Mrs. Viola McNutt, William Miller Bowden and Grover Bowden, all of Corsicana; Mrs. Burdine, Tupelo; John R. Bowden, Rice, and Mrs. Clay Fluker, Corsicana, and many other relatives. She had 100 living descendants.
