Chandler Ellis (both buried in Rice Cemetery). Edith died in Navarro Co. from
the effects of a house fire.

Waza Man's Sister Dies of Burns

Mrs. Edith Ellis Ballard, sister of Marshall Ellis of
Waxahachie, buried to death in a fire that destroyed the Bullard residence
between Rice and Corsicana Monday night, according to word received.
She was engaged in building a fire in a stove, when a can of
kerosene exploded and the fatal flare of blaze resulted. A brother of Mrs.
Bullard is in a serious condition from burns suffered while trying to save the
life of his siter.
Funeral services for Mrs. Bullard were held at Rice Tuesday,
and those attending included Waxahachie and other Ellis County relatives.

Last Rites of Woman Burned Fatally Held

Funeral services for late Mrs. Edith Ellis Bullard, 25, who
burned to death in her home, near Rice, were held at that town Tuesday afternoon
and were attended by her brother, Mrsahall Ellis of Waxahachie, and many other
relatives and friends.
The burns were sustained when she lighted a fire in a cook
stove with kerosene at the home on the Fortson farm, two and a half miles from
Rice. An explosion resulted inflicting severe burns and igniting the house which
was destroyed.
J. C. Ellis, 34, a brother of the mortally injured woman is
in a hospital at Corsicana in a serious condition from burns.
A number of people were in the home when the blace broke out,
It was with considerable difficulty that two babies were saved from the burning
building.
Survivors of Mrs. Bullard are a 5-year-old son, Marvin
Everett; her parents, Mrs. and Mrs. C. M. Ellis, Rice, with whom she made her
home, six brothers, J. C., Arnold, Earl, Samuel, and Archie Ellis, all fo the
Rice community, and Mrrshall Ellis of Waxahache; four sisters - Gladys Ellis and
Mrs. Emma Eppler, both of Rice; Mrs. Esther Perkins, Italy, Tex., and Mrs. Alma
Elam, Sweetwater.

Woman Uses Kerosene On Fire, Death Follows

CORSICANA, Texas, April 21. - Mrs. Edith Ellis, 25, who died in the P & S.
Hospital Monday night from burns sustained when she lighted a fire in a cook
stove with kerosene at the Ellis home on the Fortson farm, two and one-half
miles from Rice, Monday afternoon. An explosion resulted, inflicting severe
burns and igniting the house, which was destroyed. J. C. Ellis, 34, a brother,
is in the hospital in a serious condition from burns received at the time.
A number of people were in the house at the time, and it was with considerable
difficulty that a couple of babies were rescued from the burning home.
Survivors are a 5-year-old son, Marvin Everett; her parents; Mr. and Mrs. C. M.
Ellis, Rice, with whom she made her home; six brothers, J. C., Arnold, Earl,
Samuel and Archie Ellis, all of the Rice community, and Marshall Ellis of
Waxahachie; four sisters, Gladys Ellis and Mrs. Emma Eppler, both of Rice; Mrs.
Esther Perkins, Italy, and Mrs. Alma Elam, Sweetwater.

Corsicana Monday night at 8 o’clock, from burns was held at the First Baptist
church Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock. Services were conducted by Rev. George
Henry, assisted by Rev. H. C. Bowman, pastor of the First Methodist church.
Surviving are her mother, father, one small son, several brothers and sisters.
Interment was in the Rice cemetery, under the direction of the Sutherland
Funeral Home.

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR MRS. EDITH ELLIS BE HELD AT RICE WEDNESDAY
Funeral services for Mrs. Edith Ellis, 25, who died in the P. and S. Hospital
Monday night at 8 o’clock from burns, will be held from the First Baptist church
at Rice Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock with interment in the Rice cemetery.
The services will be conducted by Rev. Henry.
Mrs. Ellis is reported to have lighted a fire in a cook stove at the Ellis home
on the Fortson farms two and one-half miles from Rice, about 6 o’clock Monday
afternoon. Thinking the fire had been extinguished, she is reported to have
poured kerosene into the stove an explosion resulting, inflicting severe burns,
and igniting the house, which was destroyed. J. C. Ellis, 34, a brother is in
the P. and S. Hospital in a serious condition from burns received at the time.
The victims were rushed to Corsicana as soon as possible.
The stove was reported to have been blown into bits by the explosion, hurling
the burning oil over the victim and the room.
A number of people were in the house at the time, and it was with considerable
difficulty, it was reported, that a couple of babies were rescued from the
burning home.

AT RICE WEDNESDAY
Funeral services for Mrs. Edith Ellis, 25, of Rice, who died in a local hospital
late Monday from Burns received a short time before when Kerosene was poured
into a stove, were held Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock from the First Baptist
church in Rice with interment in the Rice cemetery.
Mrs. Ellis is reported to have lighted a fire and thinking the blaze had been
extinguished, poured kerosene into the stove. An explosion occurred, throwing
the burning oil over the victim and causing the house to be destroyed.
A number of persons were in the house at the time of the explosion and two
babies in the house were rescued with difficulty.
A brother, J. C. Ellis, 34, also received serious burns.
Surviving are a five-year-old son, parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Ellis, Rice; six
brothers and four sisters.
The Sutherland Funeral Home directed the funeral.
