Born in Alabama in May 1824 but in Tippah Co MS by the 1860 census William Calvin Gillen served as Sergeant in Co E, 2 MS Partisan Rangers also known as Ballentine's Regiment MS Cavalry. This unit saw action in 1862 at Lockridge Mills, Tennessee and Iuka, Corinth and Coffeeville, Mississippi. It was with Van Dorn's expedition into Tennessee in 1863 and at Franklin and Murfreesboro late in 1864 but was in Selma, Alabama on April 2, 1865. This family paid dearly for this cause as Sergeant Gillen lost his father-in-law and three brothers-in-law to the war. After the death of his wife, Mahalia, in 1899 Gillen joined four of his sons that had settled in Navarro County Texas where they farmed and lived the rest of their lives.
