Jester Inaugural  Program
Page 7

Beauford Jester is as much at home in Austin as in his
native Corsicana, having spent much of his life in the
Capital City.  A son of an early Lieutenant Governor, George T.
Jester, who served with the illustrious Governor Charles A.
Culberson, in the "gay nineties," young Jester lived several years
of his early youth in Austin.  He later resided here as a student
at the University of Texas where he graduated in law.  His law
course was interrupted by the First World War, when he entered
the First Officers Training Camp, and led to his becoming one
of the youngest infantry captains of the famed 90th Division.
He gallantly led his company through the Battles of St. Mihiel
and of the Argonne, two of the bloodiest battles of the war.

In 1929 and for six years thereafter, Mr. Jester served as a
member of the Board of Regents of the University of Texas, and
Chairman of the Board in his last two years of service.  In that
capacity he led in the planning and construction of many of the
beautiful buildings that are seen on the University campus today.
During his years as regent he was in Austin much of the time
when the building program was at its height.
in 1942, Mr. Jester was elected to the Railroad Commission
of Texas and in 1944 he was re-elected without an opponent.
Now Austin again is honored and privileged to have him with
us as governor.

Beauford Jester has always been one of Texas' most public-
spirited citizens, serving as Commander of the Corsicana Post
of the American Legion and as executive committeeman of the
American Legion, Department of Texas.   He is past president
of the First Officers Training Camp and the 90th Division Asso-
ciation and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.  He is
former president of the Navarro County Bar Association and a
former director of the Texas Bar.  He has also served on a large
number of religious and civic organizations in both Corsicana
and Austin.

Austin welcomes her old friend and a distinguished gentle-
man of Texas into the Governor's Mansion.
