We the people of Austin feel
that Lieutenant Governor
Allan Shivers is one of us, for he, like Governor Jester,
also spent a good many years of his life here.
The story of Allan Shivers is
one that does credit to Texas
and the sturdy people who settled this great domain.
Almost a hundred years ago a
pioneering Mississippi widow
halted her covered wagon on a hill in Tyler County. Mrs.
Elizabeth Shivers, Allan's great-grandmother, had brought her
three daughters and a son to Texas to build a home.
Today the descendant of this
pioneer woman has become
Lieutenant-Governor of Texas, and judging by his past record
of public service, he will do credit to his high office.
Governor Shivers was born in
Lufkin, Angelina County, on
October 5, 1907. He lived at Woodville in Tyler County until
1923 when his parents, Judge and Mrs. Robert A. Shivers, moved
to Port Arthur. He attended school in Woodville and Port Arthur.
He entered the University of
Texas and received his B.A.
degree in 1931 and his law degree in 1933. During this period
he found it necessary to augment his funds by working in
refineries and other industries.
At the University he became
interested in campus politics,
and upon graduation campaigned for and won a seat in the
Texas Senate, the youngest senator ever to take the oath of
office. He spent twelve years in the senate without suffering a
defeat, and is well qualified to take over as the presiding officer
of that body.
As a lawmaker Senator Shivers
was exempt from military
service, but volunteered and during his two years in the army
saw service in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany.
During this time he served
with distinction with the American
Military Government in occupied territory.
