John E. West and John W. Tinkle by the time war was declared were in Henderson County Texas. These boys mustered in Beat No. 5, 13 TX Brigade under Captain Robert Caskey. When these gentlemen were about to leave Athens their wives and mothers were so grieved and crying over their men leaving for war: "hush', the men told them, 'dry them tears, we will be back for breakfast-we'll whip them yankees right off."
