2/3/2002 LEAH BLACKARD: Believe it or not! The Palace Theatre is opening soon
Have you been down Sixth Avenue lately? You ask, what's all the buzz? Well
the Palace Theatre of course.
With only four weeks remaining until the Grand Opening, the excitement is
building in this great community. Can you believe it? This theatre went dark so
many years ago and sat silent and within a few short weeks the lights will go
down, the curtain will rise, and the stars will brighten.
The Palace Theatre will soon be alive as a center of cultural and civic
activity for all of Corsicana and Navarro County. The Palace will be a place to
celebrate theater, music, dance, cinema and all forms of the performing arts. It
will be a beautiful place to gather for special events, meetings and parties.
In a few weeks the Palace will be reborn. New generations will be able to
create their memories of the Palace. From now on it will not only be our
grandparents recalling their special times spent at the Palace, but we will now
be able to tell our grandchildren about those moments.
No resident of Navarro County should miss the opportunity to participate
in the opening season of the Palace Theatre. The Palace Theatre Board has chosen
an incredible season along with several benefits that will be held in the Palace
over the next year.
For the first season, the Palace Theatre will open with Porgy & Bess
March 2. This is the performance that will soon grace the stage of Bass Hall, so
you will see professional theatre at its finest. Next, Ray Price along with
Johnny Counterfeit will perform April 13. In May the Palace will present its
first film festival featuring the "Wizard of Oz," "Giant"
and more. Seeing these classics on the big screen will be a once in a lifetime
opportunity.
On June 8 the Palace will present Contemporary Dance of Fort Worth and in
September you will have a chance to see the Van Cliburn Gold Medallist.
Halloween will bring a spooky film festival for families.
In addition to this top notch first season, there will be several benefit
concerts at the Palace spotlighting Corsicana's own Toby Scott Guinn in concert
and a night of music featuring Opera singer Richard Sanchez.
If you have not purchased your tickets to the premiere season or to the
concert of your choice you must do so quickly. There are very few remaining
available tickets to these wonderful productions. To get your tickets you can
call the Palace at 874-7792 or go by the Chamber of Commerce to choose your
seats.
There is still time to participate in the restoration of this magnificent
building. There are remaining seats to purchase and the Palace Theatre is still
accepting donations.
With the purchase of a seat your name will be placed on a plaque on the
seat and with a donation of $1,000 or more your name will be placed on the donor
wall for generations to come.
Participate in the Palace Theatre. This building will be the talk of the
town and center of the performing and visual arts. With the help of county
residents we will create an exciting facility for our families and our
community.
Purchase your season tickets, make a donation, purchase a seat and
participate in the development of a cultural masterpiece!
Workers at the Palace Theatre Thursday
added some life ... well, light, to the front of the historic downtown theatre
as they put up some of the final pieces of the awning. Above, it begins to take
shape as the portions that will house coming attractions are slid into place.
