11/20/2002 MAN KILLED IN ACCIDENT: Kerensite loses life while moving dozer

By LOYD COOK/Daily Sun Staff

A Kerens man was killed on a county road in southwestern Navarro County Tuesday after he attempted to remove a bulldozer from a trailer.

According to law enforcement officials, Joel Perez, 35, was going to drive the piece of heavy equipment off a trailer after the trailer had broken loose from the vehicle pulling it and dug into the gravel of County Road SW3280 near the intersection with County Road SW3240.

Navarro County Sheriff's Office Detective Les Cotten Jr. said the trailer's tongue stuck into the roadway, leaving the back end of the trailer pointed upward. The bulldozer, Cotten said, was pointed with its "bucket" toward the back of the trailer.

"Apparently, (Perez) had removed the tiedowns at the front of the trailer and was using a cheater bar to lift a boom attachment near the bucket," Cotten said.

Officials estimated that the boom weighed as much as 28,000 pounds. When enough pressure was applied to release the attachment, the cheater bar came free with a large amount of force, striking Perez in the forehead and killing him.

Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Donna Murray held an inquest at the scene, pronouncing death.

Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home is handling arrangements, but no information about funeral services was available at press time. NCSO officials said they believed Perez' family was en route from Mexico today.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons and grandson-in-law, Joshua Clagett, Ryan Hardin, Benjamin Brunton, Seth Clagett, Adam Clagett and Seth Fuller. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandsons and grandson-in-law, Josiah Clagett, Aaron McNeil and Casey Cobb.

She was a devoted mother and homemaker to her five children. She had a heart of compassion for anything scarred, beat up, old or just not wanted. Whether it was a piece of furniture, a house, a stray cat or even people, she would invest her time and love and pour it into whatever needed fixing. Family members have confessed it was their mother's prayer that led the way to their own salvation and a real relationship with the Lord Jesus.

Mrs. Cobb loved plants and flowers and enjoyed working in the garden with her husband. She enjoyed walks with her dogs, garage sales, feeding the birds from her porch, but most of all spending time with her family.

Her grandchildren will remember most the wonderful stories she would write and tell them. She gave all the kids special nicknames and sang funny songs. Grandma Cobb was famous for her three meals a day cooking, but especially her strawberry jam and her beef with noodles.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers Douglas, Colin and Garfield.

Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Louis W. Cobb of Corsicana; daughters, Sherry Clagett and husband Paul of Corsicana, Linda Brunton of Corsicana and Susan Hardin and husband Curtis of Kansas City, Mo.; sons, Sheldon Cobb and wife Sharon of Mesquite and Timothy Cobb and wife Crystal of San Antonio; sister, Ester Mater of Sandusky, Mich. and Iris Demaray and husband Merlin of Burbonais, Ill.; brother, Stuart Smith of Sandusky, Mich.; 18 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Gideon International, Corsicana Camp, P.O. Box 276, Corsicana, TX 75151.
