Zachariah J. "Zack" Keathley Jr.: News machinist for 25 years
Aug 21, 1920 - Nov 1, 2006

09:14 AM CST on Saturday, November 11, 2006
By JOE SIMNACHER / The Dallas Morning News

Zachariah J. "Zack" Keathley Jr.

Zachariah J. "Zack" Keathley Jr. had a natural talent for working with his hands.

He taught himself to be a machinist, a position he held at The Dallas Morning News for more than 25 years.

Mr. Keathley, 86, died Nov. 1 of complications of congestive heart failure at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas.

Services were Saturday in Duncanville. Burial was Monday in Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.

Born in Frost, Texas, Mr. Keathley grew up in a family with six children. He was 5 when his father was killed in a payroll robbery, said his wife, Frances Keathley of DeSoto.

Mr. Keathley didn't graduate from high school but could have attended college on a hog-calling scholarship.

"He won a hog-calling scholarship and had a two-year scholarship, but for some unknown reason, he wouldn't take it," Mrs. Keathley said. "I think he thought he wasn't prepared to go to college."

A member of the Future Farmers of America, the young Mr. Keathley advanced through local, regional, state and national hog-calling competitions to win the scholarship at the finals in Kansas City, Mo.

During World War II, Mr. Keathley served in the Army.

He married Mary Frances Parris on Oct. 31, 1945. He died the day after their 61st anniversary.

"I think God let him hold on, so it wouldn't be on our anniversary," Mrs. Keathley said.

After the war, Mr. Keathley worked for the National Lead Co.

"He was a self-taught person," Mrs. Keathley said. "All his brothers could do most anything with their hands."

Mr. Keathley joined The News as a machinist in February 1958. He was promoted to chief machinist in February 1967.

He was often called in to repair the newspaper's printing presses at all hours of the day or night, his wife said.

Mr. Keathley was a reserved person and a good father, his wife said.

"We raised our children over at Fruitdale Baptist Church," Mrs. Keathley said. "He was a deacon, a Sunday school teacher and a choir member, but don't misunderstand me, he had a temper. If some of those guys [at the newspaper] did something wrong down there, he'd let them know it."

He retired in May 1983.

Mr. Keathley had been a Mason for more than 50 years. He also loved to hunt and play golf.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Keathley is survived by two sons, Zachariah Keathley III of Kerens, Texas, and James B. Keathley of Cedar Hill; a daughter, Suzanne Smith of University Park; and four grandchildren.
