J. D. (Dick) Middlebrooks
Jan 24, 1872 - Apr 15, 1909

Mr. J. D. (Dick) Middlebrooks, the subject of the notice, was past 35 years of age; had never married; was for years the main support of the family, was a fine business man, and his father turned all the business of the farm and gin over to “Dick,” who looked after all the business, thus relieving the aged father of the responsibilities of these cares. He was kind and affectionate, and had a large circle of friends, as was evidenced by the largest collection of people, from far and near, ever seen at Grape Creek burying ground, on the beautiful evening of April 16th, when the mortal remains were laid to rest. The grave was literally covered with the most choice flowers that loving and sympathizing hands could find. It all showed the high esteem in which both the deceased and family were held by the community. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Horace Bishop. While Dick had never made a profession of religion, yet his last words to his anxious mother's question, “Dick, do you love Jesus?” were, “Yes, I feel all right.” This was a comfort to the loved ones left behind. This is the first death in the family – a large one. Thus in young manhood one was taken, one who so doubt thought, as many others do, that all obey the Savior's command, “Be ye ready.”
