James Houston French
Oct 31, 1939 - Oct 29, 1955

IN MEMORY OF JAMES HOUSTON FRENCH

On Saturday, October 29, 1955, at 7:30 P. M. the death angel came and took away our darling son, James Houston. It is very difficult to understand why God should take one so young from his home and loved ones, but we cannot question what He in his great wisdom does, but these whom he left may find comfort in his thought that after a while we may go to meet him in that land where all is Peace and Happiness. So let us think that there is no death, but what seems so, is only transition from this world of trouble and sorrow to a better home, and that our loved one is happy in his heavenly home.

He was laid to rest in Oakwood Cemetery,
On his 16th birthday, beneath a canopy of beautiful flowers.
Our darling one has left us,
He has gone to dwell on high,
He is living in that country where they never say goodbye.

No more will we hear his laughter,
Or his smile so bright to see,
But up in the glory world,
Him we hope there to see.

A darling one from us has gone
A voice we loved it still.
A place is vacant in our home,
That never can be filled.

Now let us all live for Jesus,
And meet him over there.
Where all is Peace and Joy,
In that home so bright and fair.

He is free from earthly troubles,
He is wrapped in spotless white.
He will forever live with Jesus.
In that land of Pure delight.

When our journey here is ended,
And the Savior calls us Home,
Let us be prepared to meet Him.
In that bright and happy home.

We will all be sad and lonely without him, and will mourn our loss,
But will think of him as an angel, leading us to a beautiful home,
Where he is waiting to bid us welcome,
To a home not made with hands.

For all who loved him;
By His Mother and Father, MRS. JUANITA SMITH AND J. B. FRENCH.

Harry R. Smalley

H. R. Smalley, 80, Is Found Dead In Burned House

H. R. Smalley, 80, retired businessman and semi-invalid, died in a fire Thursday night that partially destroyed his home at 1604 Woodlawn where he lived alone. The fire was burning through the roof when discovered by people in the area about 10:30 p.m.

Rites Saturday
Funeral services will be held from the McCammon Chapel Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with burial in Oakwood Cemetery.

The rites will be conducted by Rev. Robert Wooddy, pastor of the First Baptist Church, and Rev. John Moore, Baptist minister of Dallas. Smalley was a long-time member of the First Baptist church.

Fire Chief Howard Bivins and Fire Marshal Billy Draper said Friday it was not known how the fire started.

Attempts by several unidentified persons on the scene to get in and rescue Smalley, who reportedly was heard moaning, were prevented by the intense heat and smoke.

Found On Floor
When firemen had succeeded in knocking down the fire sufficiently for them to get in the burning house, Smalley was found dead across a floor furnace grate located in a doorway between his bedroom and living room, Draper said.

The front tow rooms of the house were destroyed by the fire and the remainder of the structure was damaged by fire, smoke and water.

Draper said it could not be determined whether the house was afire and Smalley had fallen in an attempt to flee, or whether he had fallen across the furnace and his clothing caught from the heating system. The flooring around the furnace was burned out.

When the blaze was discovered by a passer-by who roused neighbors to sound an alarm, the fire had eaten through the roof of the front two rooms.

Lived Alone
The fire-victim lived alone and was attended during the day by a negro man. Neighbors looked in on him at night to care for his needs, it was reported.

He was burned beyond recognition. Draper reported.

Smalley was a well-known salesman here for many years and later was connected with a millinery establishment conducted on West Collin street by his wife who preceded him in death several years ago.

Judge Walter Hayes, justice of the peace, conducted a coroner's investigation and stated that Smalley apparently was accidentally burned to death.

Smalley was a brother-in-law of Mrs. Allyn Gordon of Corsicana, but did not have any other close relatives.

Pallbearers will be G. W. Bernard, C. H. Allen, Jack Baggett, H. B. Bomar, R. I. Harris, Jr., Allen Reed and John L. Bates, Mexia.

Fire officials had not determined the cause of the blaze Saturday.

Walter Hayes, justice of the peace, conducted a coroner's investigation and said death was due apparently to accidental burning.

No close relatives survive. Mrs. Allyn Gordon is a sister-in-law.

Mary Elizabeth (Wells) Biggers
Mar 15, 1876 - Sep 8, 1904

This community was made sad on the 7th by the death of Mrs. Mary Biggers. She was the wife of J. P. Biggers at Matson. Her maiden name was Wells, a daughter of B. I. Wells, our old and favorite ex-postmaster at Emmett. Mrs. Miggers was laid to rest in the Emmett cemetery on last Monday. She was a Christian, belonging to the M. E. Church South ever since childhood, and she was loved and honored by all that knew her. She was almost raised at Emmett and lived here until two years ago, when Mr. Biggers moved on his farm near Matson. She leaves a husband and three little children, one an infant two weeks old, a gray-haired old father, one brother and two sisters to mourn her death. This writer and the whole community join in sympathy for the bereaved family.
Uncle John.

Notes:

----

In Memory of Mary E. Biggers
Sister Mary E. Biggers, wife of J. P. Biggers, and daughter of B. I. and M. J. Wells, was born in Anderson County, Texas, March 15, 1867; professed faith in Christ and joined the church September 3, 1883. She was married to J. P. Biggers April 6, 1897 and departed this life September 12, 1904. Her mother died February 12, 1883, she being the oldest of five children. She had to take the mother's place in caring for and helping her father raise the younger children, which she did faithfully, staying at home with her father until her two sisters, the youngest of the family, were married.  She married Bro. J. P. Biggers, who, having motherless children, she became a mother to them in deed and in truth, as all who knew them could testify. She was the mother of four children, the first only lived a few hours.  The next two are boys, aged four and two years, and the last a little girl, an infant of only a few days.  Sister Biggers was possessed of a gentle, sweet, loving spirit. The song bird of peace was always singing its melodies in her heart. All who knew her loved her. She builded well while she lived. The structure of her Christian character was founded upon the rock Christ Jesus; therefore she had no fears when the end came. The writer had known Sister Biggers for many years; had been her Steward in the church to which she belonged for about ten years, and always found her true to the church and true to God and to everybody. She was especially found of flowers and music and she did much to gladden and cheer the hearts of those about her with the instrument and sweet song. It was my privilege to be with her and to talk with her just before she died. She said all was well with her; that she had no fears of death. She called her loved ones and friends around her bedside, shook hands with them, kissed her loved ones and bade them good-bye, asking them all to meet her in Heaven. Precious in the sight of the Lord is death of his saints. Her body was laid to rest in the Emmett Cemetery. Rev. I. F. Harris, her pastor, preached her funeral in the presence of a large audience. She leaves behind her a broken hearted father, a companion, two sisters, one brother, three children and five step-children and many friends to mourn her departure. May the God that she loved and served be a comfort and consolation to them in this sad hour of bereavement, and may they all so live that they may meet her in that home where there will be no more good-byes.

Craig Frederick Tekell
Dec 31, 1956 - Feb 12, 2021

Craig Frederick Tekell, 64, passed away at The Village at Heritage Oaks in Corsicana, Texas on Friday, February 12, 2021. Craig battled dementia for several years and on January 29, 2021 was admitted to Mansfield Hospital for an infection. After several days of battling the infection along with other diagnoses, Craig was called home, his true home, to be with Jesus.

Craig was born December 31, 1956 in Corsicana, Texas to Gerald Don Tekell and June Carol Tekell. Craig grew up in Corsicana, graduated from Corsicana High School, received a Bachelor of Arts from Baylor University and his master's degree in Seminary. Craig married his high school sweetheart, Christi Tekell, at First Baptist Church in Corsicana on July 11, 1981. Craig and Christi would have been married 40 years this July. Craig and Christi had two children, Tyler Tekell and Ashley Parker.

Craig always had a desire to witness to others and make a positive impact in others' lives. This is one reason why he dedicated his career to mentoring youth. Craig began his career by working in a wilderness camping program for troubled youth where they would camp in the woods for weeks at a time, having to build their own shelters, hike for water, and other activities that would strengthen and create discipline. Craig then worked at TYC in Corsicana for over 10 years. After this time, Craig moved in a different direction and founded and operated New Encounters Residential Treatment Center, a group home for troubled male youth located in Mildred, Texas. Craig began this business in 1992 and has had success with the help of a trusted and long-time friend, Butch Bower. Through this company, Craig has been able to change the lives of many and has led many of the young men to accepting Jesus. New Encounters is still operating today and is directed by Craig's son, Tyler Tekell.

Craig was a one-of-a-kind and can often be described as goofy, carefree, kind, compassionate, and without a doubt, stubborn. He did everything he could to provide a bountiful and Christ-centered life for his family. Craig and Christi both dedicated their lives to witnessing to others about Jesus Christ and both served as Sunday School teachers at First Baptist Church in Corsicana, Texas. Craig loved sports and coached several athletic teams for both of his children. One year, he was the head coach for Tyler's youth baseball team and led the team to win second in state. Craig did love most sports, but if you knew Craig, you knew his favorite sport of all was golf. He was an excellent golfer and spent many sunny days on different golf courses enjoying life. Craig also loved to hunt and him and his son share many memories of hunting dove and wild hogs together. Craig was a faithful husband and the best father anyone could ask for. Craig always liked to do silly things as he would say, "to make a memory," such as jumping in the freezing pool on Christmas Day. We always laughed at this, but now we are thankful for these memories that we can cherish with us for the rest of our lives.

Craig is survived by his wife, Christi Tekell, brother Keith Tekell and wife Donna Tekell, brother Victor Tekell and wife Gabrielle Tekell, son Tyler Tekell, daughter Ashley Parker and husband Mason Parker, one unborn granddaughter due March 17, 2021, nephew Christian Tekell and wife Kelsey Tekell, niece Hayley Nieto and husband Nick Nieto, niece Emily Tekell, niece Courtney Brogdon and husband Jourdan Brogdon, niece Kristen Boyd and husband Shawn Boyd, nephew Jonathan Tekell and wife Jillian Tekell, mother-in-law Doris Wahlenmeier, sister-in-law Brenda Sherrill and husband Robert Sherrill, nephew Jeff Yates and wife Jill Yates, great nieces, Sydney and Sadey Yates, great nephew Marty Yates.

Visitation will be held at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home in Corsicana, Texas on Friday, February 19th from 6-8 p.m. and funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church in Corsicana, Texas on Saturday, February 20th at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be at Oakwood cemetery.
