Orville Ray Langston
Dec 19, 1932 - Jul 8, 2018

Orville Ray Langston, also known as "Lanky" or "Big O" passed away July 8, 2018 at his home in Deer Park, TX after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's Disease and multiple other medical conditions. He was 85 years old.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00am Saturday, August 25, 2018, at Sagemont Church Chapel, 11300 S. Sam Houston Parkway, Houston, TX 77089 and is being officiated by their dear family friend, Rev. Emory Gadd.
Born in Corsicana, TX on December 19, 1932 to William Edward Langston and Minerva Elizabeth Olsen. Orville was the youngest of four children.
Orville grew up in Corsicana and excelled in Athletics and Music. His beautiful Bass voice would grace his school and church for many years and he was involved in many quartets and ensembles during his lifetime.
Orville received numerous awards in his Scholastic career; some highlights are: President of his Class, President of the Choir and MVP of his football team. He lettered several years in every sport in which he participated: football, track and basketball. He was considered indispensable by his coaches and teammates. After High School he attended Navarro Jr. College and was named to the All-State JC Football team during his time there. Even after Graduation, Orville continued his love of sports and participated whenever possible. He coached many teams, including some of his daughters and grandchildren and looked forward to supporting each family member in whatever extracurricular activity they were involved in. He never missed if he could physically make it. He was very instrumental in the Men's Basketball and Volleyball Leagues at Sagemont Church in its earlier years and headed up that organization for many years. He also participated in the Senior Olympics and received a 3rd place medal in the Discus. He continued to play any sport he could well into his Senior years. When he was unable to participate in more physical sports, he enjoyed golf, which had been a lifelong passion of his.
Orville met the Love of his Life, Diane (Hunt) Langston of Chicago, Illinois in 1951 and married her a year later on August 5, 1952. They moved to Houston in 1956 to accept a job at Petro Tex Chemical and raised their three daughters, Neika, Patti and Dana there. Orville was a Machinist at Petro Tex for 45 years and retired in 2001 after many dedicated years of service. He was a conscientious and hard worker and formed lifelong friendships with many during his time at the Plant.
Orville served in many capacities at his church and was Bible Teacher to Youth, Singles and Young Married classes. Of all of the many roles Orville played, and all the accomplishments he achieved, his relationship with the Lord and his love of his family took precedence over all. He was the Patriarch of his family and was beloved and respected by each member. He was man of great integrity. It didn't matter if someone was looking or not, Orville was a man who never wavered in his beliefs. It was a standing joke to those in his family when he said to us "Don't do anything I wouldn't do" because his standards were so high. He never partook in alcohol or tobacco and no one in our family ever heard a curse word leave his lips. He was a hard act to follow. He was not a perfect man but he was perfect for our family. We were truly Blessed.
Orville is survived by his wife of 66 years, Diane Langston; his daughters and their husbands, Neika and Steve Peterson, Patti and Martin Reim and Dana and Bruce Willis. Grandchildren are as follows; Misty and Chuck Williston, Jason and Shari Hunt, Lana and JP Carter, Jarod and Rachel Hunt, Edwin and Michelle Twitty, Brian and Lauren Peterson, Andy and Candice Peterson and Chance and Brittni Peterson. Nellie Jean (Williams) Jenkins
Oct 28, 1948 - Dec 14, 2020

Nellie Jean (Williams) Jenkins passed away December 14, 2020, at the age of 72.

Nellie was born October 28, 1948 in Corsicana to the late Reverend David Williams and Mary K. (Glasgow) Williams. Growing up with her siblings Shirley, James, David, and Sandra, and as the daughter of a preacher, Nellie spent much of her childhood at church or traveling to another church. She was saved and accepted Jesus at the young age of three. She often said that the family had to go to church every time the door was open. Sometimes they did not have enough gas or money to make it home from church, so her daddy would stand her on the altar when she was little and she would hold out her little purse and sing. People in the congregation would drop change, dollars, or whatever in. A lot of times that was how they made it home. Thus began her devotion to performing for God. She sang and played the organ and piano by ear for many years while her dad pastored, and then continued when her brother James took over as pastor. Her teenage years were great, helping take care of her brothers and sister's like a mother hen. After graduating from Corsicana High School, she went on to attend Southwestern Bible College in Waxahachie.

Nellie married Henry H. Jenkins on March 16, 1973, and the pair were blessed with two children: Stephen and Danielle. Her children were her life. She sacrificed so much for them, sometimes going without herself to make sure they had what they needed and even what they wanted. She was an amazing example of a selfless, Christian love. With her deep love of her children and grandchildren, she was always concerned and making sure that her kids were still going to church and raising her grandchildren in the church. She used to tell her kids before they left the house to make sure they had clean underwear with no holes just in case something happened.

Nellie worked as office manager for Jim Wood State Farm Insurance for almost 40 years. She loved her job, customers that became family, and a boss who was so good to her and took such good care of her. Some of her best times with her family were spent when her boss Jim Wood sent the family to New Mexico to a cabin. There they enjoyed shopping and playing putt-putt golf. Because she enjoyed spending time with family, Nellie loved holiday gatherings - especially Christmas. She would play the piano and her dad would pick the guitar while the family sang carols. They would watch movies and take pictures.

In her free time, Nellie enjoyed singing and playing piano for God. She loved to bake and was an amazing cook. She loved to shop, whether it was with her grandkids or her daughter Danielle and sister Shirley. She read romance novels and watched movies. Nellie loved her candy. - especially chocolate! Best of all was any time spent with her family and her grandbabies, who she adored.

Above all else, Nellie was a sweet, godly woman who lived out her life for God. Her walk with Jesus was a true testament of her faith. She encouraged her family to live for God with everything inside of you. No matter life's ups and downs, one day it would all pay off and you would finally be at rest with your Lord. She quoted scripture until the end when she took her final breath and went to be with Jesus.

Nellie leaves behind her husband Henry H. Jenkins; her children Stephen H. Jenkins (Devan) and Danielle R. Richards (Brian); her grandchildren Haley Jenkins, McKenzie Jenkins, Clint Richards, Braxton Jenkins, Gus Richards, and Everleigh Jenkins; her mother Mary K. Williams; her sisters Shirley Pritchett (Dwayne) and Sandra Sykes (Keith); her brothers James Williams (Judy) and David Williams (Louella); as well as a number of nieces, nephews, and extended family.

To honor her life, Nellie's family has planned a visitation on Sunday, December 20 from 6-8 in the evening at Corley Funeral Home. Her service will be Monday, December 21 at Trinity Assembly of God in Corsicana at 2 o'clock in the afternoon with her brother Rev. James Williams officiating. Interment will follow at Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery.

Melvin Gene Wardlaw
Sep 22, 1929 - Jan 6, 2021

Melvin Gene Wardlaw, 91, of Corsicana, Texas, passed away peacefully January 6, 2021. He was born September 22, 1929 to Gladys and Elmer Wardlaw in Mertens, Texas. On January 23, 1954, he married Shirley Annette Cain and they resided in DeSoto, Texas for over 50 years before moving to Corsicana. Gene served his country stateside in the Army during the Korean War. After he returned home, he met Shirley at a caf in Dallas where she often served him breakfast. She told her friend prior to meeting him that she would marry him one day. Before he knew what hit him, he was married. Her instincts must have been right as they were together 63 years before she passed away in 2017. Gene had many talents as a young man, but the majority of his life was spent hauling milk in an 18-wheeler for Foremost and Schepps Dairies. He worked long hours to ensure his family was secure. It must have been fulfilling as he recently said, "If I could only drive a truck one more time." Anyone who knew him would describe him as a kind, patient, humble and content man. These words describe the boy his siblings remembered, the man Shirley fell in love with and the father that raised two very appreciative daughters. He needed little from life other than making others smile - especially his family. He was known for random acts of kindness like mowing neighbors' lawns. Whether DeSoto or Corsicana, that simple act of kindness brought neighborhoods together. He impacted many people in his lifetime, but no one more than his family of which he was so very proud. He is survived by his daughter, Debbie Wylie and husband, Mike; his daughter, Kim Brown and husband, Phil; his granddaughter, Lindsay Olsen and husband, Greg; his granddaughter, Erin Freytag and husband, Kolby; his granddaughter, Emily Wagner and husband, Sam; 5 great-grandchildren, Grant Ecord, Cooper Olsen, Annie Olsen, Emery Freytag and Lincoln Freytag, sister-in-law, Lucille Wardlaw; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Wardlaw; brother, Joe Wardlaw; sister Janice Kidd, and half-brother, Raymond Staats. Family will gather for a graveside service at the Richland Cemetery in Mertens, Texas on Friday, January 15 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Westhill Church of Christ Benevolence Fund, 3400 SH 22 Corsicana, Texas 75110.

Vic married Patty Sue Daniel on July 2, 1955. The two of them planted roots for what would become his greatest blessing and what he was most proud of, his family. Their daughter Vicki, was born in 1956. Vicki is their only child, and pride and joy. "Ruff," as Vic called her, earned her nickname while working with Vic on the farm.
Vicki married Jay in 1976, and he quickly became Vic's right-hand man and best friend.
Retiring in 1983, Vic was able to devote more of his time and energy into ranching, his true passion. This also provided more time for him to mentor his grandchildren and ranch hands, Jason and Ryan. The three of them could often be found riding the roads, tending to cattle, mending fences, and reading the Bible under a shade tree during breaks.
Vic served his Lord and Savior in numerous ways. He was an active member of First Baptist Church of Corsicana. He worked on many charitable causes as a 33rd degree Master Mason, Scottish Rite and Shriner. He often sold and financed land for struggling families, donated hay to fellow ranchers in need and offered advice and life lessons to many others who call Vic their hero.
There is a void in the lives of family and many friends who love Vic, but we can celebrate knowing he's earned his place in Heaven and we will meet again one day soon.
Mr. Howell was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Rusty Howell and his sister Charlotte Arthur.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years Pat, his daughter Vicki and husband Jay Payne. Grandchildren Jason and wife Amber Payne, and Ryan and wife Angie Payne. Four great grandchildren, Eli, Averleigh, Ryder and Rhett Payne, as well as many extended family and friends.
Friends and family are encouraged to gather for a time of visitation on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 from 6 to 8 in the evening at Corley Funeral Home. A service celebrating Vic's life will be held on Thursday, January 7, 2021 at 2 o'clock in the afternoon at the First Baptist Church of Corsicana with Dr. Danny P. Reeves officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Texas Scottish Rite for Children Hospital in Dallas or the First Baptist Church of Corsicana.

Monte Bryan Hutchins
Mar 10, 1974 - Jul 28, 2021

Monte Bryan Hutchins passed away July 28, 2021, at the age of 47.

Bryan was born March 10, 1974 in Corsicana to Jacqueline Gammil and Monte James Hutchins. He grew up in Rice, and attended Blooming Grove schools. Although he was an all around athlete and played all sports, basketball was his passion. He was second in the state in rebounding in high school. He also loved fishing with his dad. After graduating from Blooming Grove High School in 1992, Bryan went on to receive his bachelor's degree in business management from the University of Texas at Arlington. This helped prepare him for his job as the Vice President of First State Bank of Rice, Texas - which he really enjoyed.

Bryan's most treasured value was being a dad! He and Shannon had two amazing children - Connor and Chase. His boys were the light of his life, and he loved every moment that he spent with them. He made sure to show, through word and action, how important they were. He was very proud that his son Connor shared the same birthday as him. When the boys were young, they always had fun with their dad hitting baseballs and playing at playgrounds. When Chase was a boy, Bryan often took him to garage sales to find special treasures. Bryan also cherished watching Connor play basketball throughout the years, as well as Chase playing golf. Bryan and Shannon remained close friends throughout the years, and were committed to co-parenting for the benefit of their children.

He adored his sister, Kate, and was very proud to walk her down the wedding aisle when she got married. He always ensured that she had everything she needed during her school career and beyond. Bryan will always be her "Bubba."

Bryan remained an outstanding athlete, even into his 40s. When he was not working, he was always doing something outside. He worked hard to stay in shape, and was training for a triathalon. Basketball, running, fishing, and shooting were all enjoyable for Bryan. He was involved with the Corsicana Running Club, the Waxahachie Sand Volleyball League, and the YMCA. He loved country western dancing! Bryan was always one of the best dancers in the room. A very smart man, he liked puzzles, sudoku, fantasy football and baseball, and playing poker.

With his great sense of humor, Bryan was always the life of the party. His wonderful smile could light up a room. He was joyful, and spread his positive spirit to others. Bryan was a a kind soul, and was willing to help anyone in need. He enjoyed being a part of his community, and served in the Lion's Club, volunteered for the Salvation Army, and helped with Derrick Days. He was also a member of the Rotary Club and the Navarro County Youth Expo. He loved life and lived it to the fullest. Bryan will be greatly missed by all that knew him. He touched an infinite amount of lives, and his legacy will live on through his family.
Bryan leaves behind his sons Connor and Chase Hutchins, his sister and brother-in-law Kate and Matt Authier, his nephews Anderson, Brooks, and Campbell Authier, as well as his brother Michael J. Crawford and sister Karen Crawford. He also considered Priscilla Clore, as a mother.

To honor Bryan's life, his family has planned a visitation on Monday, August 2nd from 6 to 8 in the evening at Corley Funeral Home. His Celebration of Life will be Tuesday, August 3 at 11 o'clock in the morning in the Magnolia Chapel of Corley Funeral Home, with Pastor Steve Hayes officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Corsicana Lion's Club.

We encourage you to share your memories and thoughts of Bryan with the family at www.corleyfuneralhome.com

County medical director succumbs to COVID complications
Community mourns Dr. Rogers
By Michael Kormos and Megan Hempel Daily Sun
 Feb 2, 2021
Corsicana and Navarro County lost its biggest crusader against the pandemic Saturday, to the disease he fought so hard to contain.
Navarro County Health Director and Corsicana ISD School Board President Dr. Kent Rogers passed away from COVID-19 complications around 2 p.m. Jan. 30.
"It is with great sadness that we inform you that Dr. Kent Rogers passed away this afternoon with his family by his side," The Navarro County Office of Emergency Management stated. Dr. Rogers has been at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19 here in Navarro County as our Local Health Authority. His leadership and key stakeholder knowledge have been invaluable as we have navigated this this entire pandemic. Please keep Dr. Rogers's family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time of loss."
In the moments leading up to his death, friend and fellow CISD Board Member Fr. Ed Monk posted the following on Facebook:
"After a long and valiant struggle with COVID-19, Dr. Rogers faced the choice of being on a ventilator for a long term. Dr. Rogers used most every available treatment for COVID-19, but already diminished lung capacity made recovery difficult. Dr. Rogers made the brave decision to move to comfort care only."
Monk also posted a tribute following Rogers' death Saturday afternoon on behalf of the board and superintendent.
We are heart broken over the passing of our leader, Dr. Kent Rogers. We lift his family in our hearts and prayers. Dr. Rogers' leadership, expertise, and love of learning inspires us beyond words. We will follow his example of service to others and be encouraged by his drive and determination to make the world a better place. The Corsicana Tiger Spirit is bright because of the passionate work of our leader. His legacy will live on forever. We will miss him greatly."
Friends, colleagues and community members posted tributes to social media over the weekend and the bronze statue of Dr. Rogers in downtown Corsicana became a makeshift memorial where residents lit candles and laid flowers at its feet.
NCOEM Coordinator Eric Meyers wrote: "I will forever be grateful for your wisdom, leadership, and friendship to so many in this county, not only during this pandemic, but in all the areas you have worked in to help others. You were a true servant leader who always put others before yourself.
I am thankful to have had the opportunity for one last check on our operations last night, and will always remember the one who pushed his hardest to keep our community safe. Thank you, Dr. Rogers, for being a man I could call with questions about anything. Your smile, laughter, and sense of humor will be forever missed."
Fellow physician Robert G. Kingman, MD said:
"Saturday we lost a pillar of our community to COVID-19. We lost the backbone of our health care system. I lost a colleague, a mentor, a friend, and a brother in Christ. Let us honor Dr. Kent Rogers by beating this terrible disease. Please wear your mask, wash your hands, socially distance and get your vaccine as soon as you can. Let's win this one for Kent."
Dr. Kent Rogers, President served on the Corsicana Independent School District Board of Trustees from 1992 to 2010 and again from 2014 to 2021.
Over 20 years of service on the CISD Board made Dr. Rogers a veteran in more ways than one.
Growing up in Mount Pleasant, one could say being a Tiger was natural. Although he has traded the Mount Pleasant Tigers' black and gold for the Corsicana Tigers' blue and gold, a Tiger is a Tiger, and for the past 30 years you could find Dr. Rogers on the sidelines in the fall under the Friday night lights serving as one of the Corsicana Tiger Football team physicians.
Dr. Rogers helped form CARE in the late 80s, which drew him to the interworking of the district and an appreciation for the impact boards can have on education and the community. So, he decided to run.
In Corsicana ISD, "we are emulating the best of America's notion of a melting pot and blending the best qualities of diverse individuals into a competitive, curious, compassionate world of young adults. This should be and is indeed a mission."
A bronze statue was unveiled in May 2019 in downtown Corsicana honoring Dr. Kent Rogers.
"The way the community honored Dr. Rogers with a Bronze statue and ceremony underscores the will of Corsicana residents to recognize and celebrate those who give back to make our city better for everyone," Mayor Don Denbow said. "I have the privilege of taking part in these events as Mayor and I enjoy each of them, but this one was very special to me, after all the years Kent and I stood side by side on the Tiger Field sidelines. I know the examples he taught our student athletes will stay with them for the rest of their lives. They sure have with me."
As much a part of the community as he is the health care field, Dr. Kent Rogers has been a physician, mentor, friend and supporter of education in Corsicana and Navarro County since 1976.
From his work in private practice and public health, to his decades of volunteer work on the sidelines of Corsicana Tiger football games, Rogers has been a constant in the changing face of medicine in Navarro County.
"It was my heartfelt pleasure on behalf of the City of Corsicana to be a part of the Dr. Kent Rogers Bronze Project," Parks Director Sharla Allen said. "The committee was wonderful and the donors were very generous. Congratulations to Dr. Rogers on this bronze, it makes our City a better place."
Born Dec. 8, 1945 in Arkansas City, Kansas, Rogers attended Rice University, and earned his medical degree at UT Southwestern Medical School. He interned at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
Following a two year stint in the U.S. Navy, he completed his residency at Parkland Hospital.
For 29 years, Rogers was affiliated with Medical Arts Clinic in Corsicana, serving on the clinic's board of directors in addition to his medical practice. He joined Trinity Clinic in 2005, and Medical and Surgical Associates of Corsicana in 2009. Rogers was chief of staff at Navarro Regional Hospital for two years, and medical director of the hospital's ICU for six years.
"If I had it to do all over again, I'd hire him twice," stated the late Dr. Louis Gibson, head of Corsicana's Medical Arts Clinic, in a magazine article about Rogers.
In addition to his private practice, Rogers served the community as medical director of Heritage Oaks Retirement Village and the Corsicana/Navarro County Health Department. Rogers said the building of the current facility for the Health Department was a demonstration of the generosity and determination of the people and the city, working for the good of the residents of Navarro County.
You could also find Rogers on the sidelines at Tiger Field in Corsicana as team physician for the Tiger football program. Rogers said he loved the games and the excitement.
"Educating the children makes us a better country, a better democracy it makes life better in this country," Rogers once quoted.
Dr. Rogers and his wife Donna Jo have three children: Cyndi, Susan and Mark.

3-YEAR-OLD ANGUS BOY KILLED BY TRACTOR FALL

Anthony Lenn Knight, three-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Knight, Route 3, Angus, was dead on arrival at Memorial Hospital of head injuries late Sunday afternoon.

His death is the 11th traffic fatality in Navarro county for this year.

The father finally attracted a passing motorist, Howard L. Tidwell, Ennis, who sped the child to Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Knight and his sons were en route to a store and were riding the tractor since his automobile is reported to have been out of commission.

Marshall Couch and Bob Parrish, state highway patrolmen, investigated the accident and said it occurred 7.3 miles south of Corsicana, at 5:30 p.m., Sunday.

Richland Man Fatally Shot Late Thursday

Horace C. Knight, 44, of Richland, painter, died in Memorial hospital at 6:10 a.m. Friday of gunshot wounds received at the family residence in Richland Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

County Attorney Morris said Friday that since it apparently was a case of self defense, no charge was filed. However, he said the case would be carried before the grand jury. It was the unanimous opinion of himself and law enforcement officers that the evidence was insufficient for a charge, the county attorney said. The woman was released.

According to Morris, the slight woman, very nervously but in a controlled manner, told him and officers that the husband had been drinking beer and whisky all day and threatened her and the five small children.

She said she grabbed the pistol and told him to leave them alone or she would shoot and he replied that she had better shoot because he was going to take the gun away from her and kill her, Morris said.

At this point she fired once, striking him in the head, Morris said she told the officers.

Morris said the woman related that the husband beat her on many occasions and displayed an area where she said her husband had knocked out several teeth.
