The Consolidated Pursley School opened in the fall of 1926 with
eleven grades and a faculty of five. Public schools only went
through eleven grades at that time. The Consolidated Pursley School
was located one mile south of Farm Road 709 on land that was donated
by the William Harvey Pursley family. It was a large two-story
building consisting of five classrooms, one or two cloakrooms, a
bookroom, and a large T-shaped hallway on the first floor with two
stairways leading to the second floor. A large auditorium, stage and
two dressing rooms were located on the second floor. In the 1930's,
it had a DELCO electrical generating system with a gasoline engine
for power to produce lighting for night events. The system was
notorious for its malfunctions. In addition to its role in
school-sponsored events such as plays, debates, declamation,
basketball, football, and softball, it also served as a community
center.
