I don't know when the appointment process changed but
it had to be after Claude Otto Williams was appointed. At that time all applicants had to take a test and the one who made the highest grade was supposed to be appointed. I think they were appointed by the members of Congress. I remember that Claude Otto Williams did not make the highest grade. I was surprised because he was a smart man. Anyway, he had a brother in Dallas, Percy, who was well known and respected. I believe he was in the insurance business. Anyway, he was a good friend of Joe Pool, who I believe was the Congressman from that district. Percy talked to Joe Pool and Claude Williams was immediately appointed.
I don't charge extra for information for fear I might have lost some details during my 77 years on this earth. (Just joking) Claude Williams was married to my mother's sister, Flossie. I don't remember the exact dates but he hired me for his clerk for some time while I was in high school and college. I married in 1948 and I remember I worked that summer before I married. ...
