Located near the site of Chatfield in
the northeastern corner of Navarro County. It was probably founded in the mid
1840s and was thus one of the earliest settlements in the county. For many years
it was a regional trading center. A Muskabe post office opened in 1848 and
operated until 1867. The town apparently began to decline after the Civil War
and by the 1880s it no longer appeared on maps.
Notes:
Also spelled Muskete or Muskobee. Barbara Knox has several old
letters headed "Muskete" with the dates in the 1860s.
