D.J. Blair Sr., 89, of Corsicana passed away Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2006, at Navarro Regional Hospital.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Ross and Johnson Mortuary.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Woodland Cemetery with Brother Arthur Williams officiating.
Pallbearers will be sons and grandsons.
Mr. Blair was born May 1, 1917, in Cheneyboro. He retired from Wolf Brand Chili after 42 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Liddie Blair; wife of 62 years, Dossie Mae; sons, Henry, Walter and Brady Blair; daughter, Bettye Blair; granddaughter, Kimberly Blair Hardeman; and sister, Lula Mae.
Survivors include his sons, D.J. Blair Jr. (Doris) of Corsicana, W.H. Blair (Ima) of Dallas and Morgan Blair Sr. (Natalie) of Cleburne; daughter, Gladys Blair of Corsicana; 23 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

God took Franklin Daniel Shrader softly. Surrounded by family, Dan passed away peacefully at home in Lampasas Oct. 26, 2006. Dan was born March 14, 1933, in Rockwall to Ryder and Lucille Shrader.
He is survived by his wife, Jane, to whom he was a devoted husband for 53 years; his daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Scott Garanflo of Georgetown; daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Ronny Davis of Lampasas; and his precious grandchildren, Lillie and Shrader Davis.
Other close family includes his sister, Ann Elizabeth Smith of Corpus Christi; sister and brother-in-law, Becky and Marcus Jordan of Malakoff; and sister-in-law, Norma Field of San Antonio. He is also loved and remembered by many nephews and nieces, Julie, Mark and Jeremy Freehill, Emily Freehill and Fernando Abreu, Bonnie, Ken and Benjamin Hirsch, Mikell Smith, Patrick, Kathleen, Andrew and Matthew Smith, Susie, Richard and Amanda Mattison, Kristina, Adam and Carter Bieleki, Billy and Blanca Field, Elizabeth and Leon Cargill, Whitney Everett and Presley Ann Smith.
Dan greeted everyone with a smile and never met a stranger. He was a simple man who cherished family and friends and was happiest when his home was full of laughter and good food. Dan was larger than life and enriched many lives with his generosity, optimism, decency and unconditional love.
His life was an example of loyalty, commitment and service. Dan served as president of the Lampasas Lions Club, on the Boy Scout Comanche Trail Council for 10 years, as a board member of the U.S. Army Board of Governors, on Seton Highland Lakes Hospital Board in Burnet. Dan was proud of his accomplishment as an Eagle Scout and continued supporting Boy Scout troops in the Central Texas area. He lived and practiced his faith serving as director of the board of trustees for First United Methodist Church in Euless and Lampasas.
Dan graduated from Corsicana High School in 1950 and graduated from Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches in 1954. After college, he followed in his father’s footsteps and worked for Texas Power & Light in Mineral Wells, Waco and Irving, where he became the Central Division sales manager.
Longtime friend Jim Hoffpauir invited Dan to become a sales manager in his new car dealership in Lampasas and later he became a GM dealer as they expanded to Burnet. Dan will always be remembered for his creative commercials and the tag line, “What a Place!”
Dan enthusiastically organized and recruited many friends and family for his camping trips across the country. But it was Colorado he loved the best and he returned to year after year with good friends Bill and Robie Miller and many others.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Sneed Funeral Home in Lampasas.
A memorial service celebrating Dan’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Marian Hill, 84, of Corsicana passed away Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2006, in Corsicana.

Mrs. Hill was born Oct. 15, 1922, in Beaumont to Frank and Susan Gallagher. She married Herbert “Hub” Hill on Sept. 18, 1943. They were married 46 years before he died. Marian worked at First National Bank for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Katherine Bruner; and brother, Steve Gallagher.
Survivors include several nieces, Arlene Brewer, Sandra Parson, Barbara Jugenheimer and Debra Hill; neighbors, Mark and Kathey Harrison and family and Pat Christie; dear friends, Virginia and Earl Bush and Bill Olsen family; and very special sitter, Christie Tepe.

Johnny Michael Chirafis

 Mr. Johnny Michael Chirafis 81, of Corsicana, Texas died on October 30, 2006 at his home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frances and Stefano Chirafis and his sisters Josephine Chirafis, Antoinette Varner and Rosa Lee Bowyer. He was born in Dallas, Texas on May 23, 1924 and moved to Corsicana, Texas as a baby. He attended public schools and played football for the Corsicana Tigers at Corsicana High School and then at the University of Texas before entering the service during World War II. He proudly served in the 34th Infantry Division of the Army and participated in the offensive in Northern Italy. He was honorably discharged after being injured in combat and awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart for exemplary and brave service above and beyond the call of duty. After arriving back in Texas, he entered Baylor University earning a Law Degree. He returned to Corsicana and became an integral part of the law community and the Democratic Party. He proudly served as chairman of the Democratic Party in Navarro County. He was a member of the Navarro County Bar Association and the State Bar Association. He also served his community as a lawyer and city attorney. His practice served many in Navarro and surrounding counties. He was active in his church, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, throughout his life serving as an alter boy as a child and Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. Although he had been retired from his law practice for many years prior to his death, he remained active in providing his knowledge of the law with all those who needed his help. He was surrounded throughout his entire life by lifelong friends and a family that loved and appreciated him. He is survived by his nieces; Frances and Frank Breazeale of Corsicana, TX and Rose Ann Renouf and John Sykes, nephew Stephen and Dawn Bowyer, Bryant and Brendon Bowyer. His great nieces and nephews, Kathleen Legrand of Austin and her husband Mark and their children Jennifer and Jake; Mark Frances Rash of Corsicana and her husband Chuck Rash and their children, Erin and Zack: Michele Mercy of Dallas, Denise Bonneson of Wisconsin and her husband Marty, Robert Breazeale of Corsicana, John Breazeale of Corsicana and his wife Ginger and children, Luke, Braden and Grant. There will be a Rosary service held at Corley Funeral Home on November 1, 2006 at 7:00 P.M. Thomas Darby
Thomas Darby, 77, passed away at home in Corsicana at 4:45 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, 2006, with his family at his side. Mr. Darby was born June 10, 1929, in Roane to Thomas Irvin and Queena Bess Darby, the youngest of eight children. The Darby family moved to the Kerens area from Troup in 1911.
Mr. Darby enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War following in the footsteps of his older brother, Jack Darby, who was a decorated veteran of World War II. A big fan of sports his entire life, particularly baseball and football, Mr. Darby was discharged from the Air Force in 1949 after breaking his leg playing football for his Armed Forces team.
A high school football player who was the smallest on the team, he served as manager to begin with and finally grew big enough to wear the pads for his Kerens Bobcats during his senior year for the class of 1946. His teammates, Lynn and Glynn Holloway, Dick Jennings, Royce Hassel, and Big John Seale always said they looked after him on the football field because he had more enthusiasm than size. Later he served as baseball coach for all of his boys while they were growing up and ran the sidelines when they were on the Bobcat high school football field. He faithfully attended his class of 1946 Kerens High School reunion each year until his health failed in 2006.
Mr. Darby was a proud graduate of East Texas State College with a Master’s of Science degree at the age of 55. He retired from TXU and later served as a city councilman for Corsicana during his retirement years.
Thomas Darby was married to Angelene Madden in March 1951 and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2001. They had four children, Tommy Madden Darby, Andrew Barron Darby, Joe David Darby and Janene Darby Mueller. All were born in Corsicana and graduated from Kerens High School.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Irvin and Queena Bess Darby; brothers, Jack and Johnny Darby; and sisters, Billie Ruth Cartlidge and Melba Rea.
He is survived by his wife, Angelene; sisters, Katherine Patterson, Bobbie Jo Darby and Queena Allen; four children; grandchildren, Tommy Earl Darby,
Jacob Darby, Lauren Darby, Christopher Franklin, Michael Mueller, Kenneth Joe Darby, Danika Darby and Brooke Darby; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Kerens Ex-Students Association.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Paschal Funeral Home.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Paschal Funeral Chapel in Kerens with the Rev. Buddy Moore officiating. Interment will follow at Kerens Cemetery.

Funeral services for Edgar Wright Blackburn, 82, will be held at 3 p.m. today at Corley Funeral Chapel with Dr. David Edwards officiating. Ed died Nov. 2, 2006, at his home in Corsicana after an extended illness.
Born in Corsicana on Jan. 7, 1924, Ed graduated from Corsicana High School in 1941. He served as manager of the Corsicana Housing Authority for 34 years, retiring in 1989.
During World War II, Ed served in the Merchant Marines. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Corsicana. He also served on the Twilight Home board of directors and as past grand master of the Odd Fellows Lodge, as well as the Navarro County Commission on Aging and as a member of the CISD board for six years. He was a Little League baseball coach for 20 years. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, and playing dominoes and bridge.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar Blackburn Sr. and Addie Carroll Rogers; and one sister, Elizabeth Ann Lundy.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Carolyn Dublin Blackburn; one daughter, Carol Hayes and husband Greg of Dallas; one son, Jim Blackburn and wife Janet of Corsicana; two grandchildren, Kyle and Holly Hayes, both of Dallas; two nephews, Jack Lundy of Huntsville, Ala., and David Lundy of Tyler; and one niece, Ann Bullock of Del City, Okla. He leaves a host of friends including Hank, his black Labrador retriever.
The family would like to show appreciation to his loving caregivers through his final days. They include Lois Ballard (special friend), Debra Gooden, Doris Anderson, Ruthie Wilson, Bobbie Ward and Shirley Bryant.

She created many lovely banners for Church on the Rock as well as countless outfits for her beloved children and grandchildren.
Imogene was a long-time member of Church on the Rock in Waco. She enjoyed playing the piano and organ, creating various beautiful crafts, painting porcelain dolls and dishes, and spending time cooking and being with her family.
She was preceded in death by her father, Isaac Luther Dockery; mother, Edith Chapman Dockery; husband of 63 years, Alvie Royce Ray; son, Bobby Ray; and six brothers and sisters.
She is survived by daughters, Suzanne Parrish and husband Michael and Robin Donaldson and husband Curt, all of China Spring; grandchildren, Robert and Beth Parrish of Spring, Kimberly and Bubba Galvan of Waco, Christopher Donaldson and Megan Richardson of Waco and Benjamin Donaldson of China Spring; great-grandchildren, Samantha and Bobby Parrish, Isabella and Grace Galvan, Caine and Cy Donaldson; and many nieces and nephews.

CORSICANA -- An 8-year-old girl heading home from trick-or-treating died and her mother was hurt when their car hit a wild hog and struck a tree.
Tuesday night's crash north of Corsicana killed Evyn Williams, the Department of Public Safety said.
The accident left Kim Rena Watkins-Williams, 38, with face and head injuries.
Watkins-Williams was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas, where she was listed in good condition Thursday.
The mother and child were wearing seat belts, the DPS said.

She was born in Corsicana, Texas, and lived in Pasco for more than 20 years. She was a homemaker.

 Leslie G. Grayson of Corsicana, Texas entered into eternal life on November 4, 2006. Leslie was born on March 12, 1918 in Winkler, Texas, to his parents Leslie and Alice Grayson. He was employed by the Coca Cola Bottling Company for 43 years, both in Galveston and Corsicana, retiring as a Plant Manager. He was a long time member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving the European Theater of Operations in the United States Army as a Military Policeman.
A Funeral Service will be held at the Corley Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, November 7, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Lain Teel and Rev. B.F. Risinger Officiating. A visitation will be held on Monday November 6, 2006 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
He is survived by his Son and Daughter-in-Law Leslie J. and Becky Grayson of Corsicana, son Bobby H. Grayson of New York City, New York, and His step-daughter Becky Fahlsing of Corsicana. His Grandsons, Lane Grayson of Ennis and Rusty Grayson of Dallas. His great grandchildren, Blake, Sam, Drew, Olivia, Kate and Mia Grayson. His sister Dorothy Magner of Richardson. Numerous Nieces and Nephews. And a host of friends.

Funeral services for J. B. Patrick, aged 89 years, formerly of Beaumont,
who died Friday morning at the Hilliard’s Twilight Home, 308 West
Seventh avenue, were held at the Corley Funeral Chapel Saturday
afternoon at 3 o’clock. Burial was in the Chatfield Cemetery.
The rites were conducted by Dr. Matthew H. Arnold, pastor of the Third
Avenue Presbyterian church. Patrick had made his home at the Twilight
Home for the past two years. He was a member of the Presbyterian church.

CORSICANA, Texas, Oct. 28. - Funeral services for Mrs. Mamie Downard Peck, pioneer resident of Corsicana, writer, poet and newspaper woman, who died in a McKinney hospital Tuesday morning following an illness of several months, will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from St. John's Episcopal Church of which she was a member, with burial in Oakwood Cemetery in the family lot beside her husband, the late Hal M. Peck, who died recently. The Rev. H. J. Ellis, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church, will conduct the services.
Surviving is one son, Hal M. Peck of Dallas.
Mrs. Peck was one of the best known poets and writers in Texas and her works have been published in numerous magazines and newspapers over the country. For many years she was the society editor of the Daily Sun, starting when the paper was young and continuing in that capacity for many years.

FUNERAL SERVICES WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON FOR MRS. MAMIE DOWNARD PECK
Funeral services for Mrs. Mamie Downard Peck, pioneer resident of
Corsicana, writer, poet and newspaperwoman, who died in a McKinney
hospital Tuesday morning following an illness of several months, will be
held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock from St. John’s Episcopal church,
of which she was long a devout member with burial in Oakwood
cemetery in the family plot beside her husband, the late Hal M. Peck
who died recently.
The body will arrive on the Southern Pacific train Wednesday morning at
11 o’clock, and will be taken to the Sutherland Funeral Home where it
will remain until time for the funeral services. Rev. H. J. Ellis,
rector of St. John’s Episcopal church, will conduct the services.
Special music will be given by the St. John’s choir, and will include
favorite songs of Mrs. Peck:
“Lead, Kindly Light,” “Abide With Me,” and “One Sweetly Solemn Thought.”
Surviving is one son, Hal M. Peck of Dallas, who was with his mother
when the end came.

Mrs. Peck was one of the best known poets and writers in Texas, and her
works have been published in numerous magazines and newspapers over the
country. There was a smoothness about her poetry as well as prose
efforts that stamped her as the true artist in her chosen line of
endeavor. For many years she was the society editor of the Daily Sun,
starting when the paper was young and continuing in that capacity for
many years, in fact, up until other work interfered with a daily society
page. But she never entirely ceased connection with the Sun until her
illness a short time before her death cut short her writings. She still
felt, as did the Sun publishers, that she was a part of the Sun staff
and there was a feeling existing between Mrs. Peck and the entire Daily
Sun force that can only come with years of close association and work
together.
She was, aside from her literary work, one of the loveliest and most
womanly characters that ever graced the Old Southland, of which she was
an integral part and of which she was so proud. Coming from an old and
prominent Southern family, she inherited all the pride of her race as
well as the inherent courtesy and kindness that goes with the true
Southern gentlewoman. There was genuine sorrow in many hearts when word
of her passing reached her home here and the sympathy of a large circle
of friends go out to the only son, who was also recently bereft of his
father.

Funeral services for Louis Pevehouse, aged 88 years, who died THursday
were held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the family home near

J. W. Phelps Dies At Cryer Creek Home
CORSICANA, Texas, April 27 - J. W. Phelps, 76, long-time Cryer Creek resident, died at his home early Thursday. Funeral was held Friday at the Cryer Creek Baptist Church.
Burial was in Cryer Creek Cemetery.
Surviving are his wife of Cryer Creek; a son, W. T. Phelps, Dallas; a daughter, Mrs. Frances McLean, Highlands; a brother, Tot Phelps, Corsicana; thirteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Thursday.
Mr. Phelps was a long time resident of the Cryer Creek community and was
known throughout the county.
Funeral services are pending at press time but an account of the rites
will be carried in next week’s paper.

CORSICANA, Texas. - Mrs. Laura Etta Phelps, 68, died in the Navarro Clinic Sunday following an extended illness.
Funeral services were held Tuesday from the First Assembly of God Church with burial in the Cryer Creek community. The rites were conducted by the Rev. Guy Phillips, pastor.
A native of Van Zandt County, Mrs. Phelps resided at Blooming Grove for a number of years before moving to Corsicana. She operated a store here.
Surviving are a son, V. L. Phelps, Lubbock; four daughters, Mrs. Louis Reid and Mrs. H. L. Lumpkins, both of Dallas; Mrs. Thelma Farish and Mrs. A. G. Hyden, both of Corsicana; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, H. L. Rogers, Malakoff, and J. E. Rogers, Athens; a sister, Mrs. S. L. Fletcher, Greeley, Colo., and other relatives.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Laura Etta Phelps, 68, owner of a store
here for a number of years, were held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. from the
First Assembly of God Church here. Burial was in the Cryer Creek
cemetery. The rites were conducted by Rev. Guy Phillips, pastor.
Mrs. Phelps died Sunday night at the Navarro Clinic following an
extended illness.
A native of Van Zandt county, she resided at Blooming Grove and
Cryer creek before coming to Corsicana a number of years ago.
She was a member of Home Rebekah Lodge No. 128.
Surviving are son V. L. Phelps, Lubbock; four daughters, Mrs. Louis
Reid and Mrs. H. L. Lumpkin, both of Callas; Mrs. Thelma Farish and

PHILIBERT - Corsicana, Texas. Oct 15. - Mrs. Mary W. Philibert, 95, resident of Corsicana more than fifty years, died at her home Monday morning. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

Navarro Youth Shot to Death
Body of Jack Phillips Discovered in Richland Creek
Jack Phillips, 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Phillips, living on the B. L. Davis farm one and one-half miles south of Corbet, Navarro County, was found dead in Richland Creek early Wednesday morning. There was a bullet wound in the top of his head, apparently made by a .22-caliber rifle ball.
The lad left the home of his parents about 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon with the intention of baiting some fishhooks which he had set in the creek. When he failed to return late Tuesday evening, a search was instituted which lasted all night and until the body was found face down in the creek Wednesday morning.
Indications pointed to his being shot as he was baiting a hook on the bank of the creek, the body toppling into the water after being shot. It is thought the unknown assailant fired from behind, probably standing on top of the bank of the creek, as the bullet ranged down toward the face.
Funeral arrangements had not been announced late Wednesday.
The sheriff's office was notified Wednesday morning and Deputy Sheriff E. W. Warnell and Justice of the Peace Sam B. Jordan left immediately for the scene. Sheriff W. T. Wilson went later.
The family recently moved to this county from West Texas. The boy is survived by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.
Justice of the Peace Jordan rendered a coroner's verdict Wednesday afternoon of "death as the result of gunshot wounds inflicted by unknown persons."

CORBET BOY IS FOUND MURDERED

JACK PHILLIPS FOUND DEAD IN WATER AFTER ALL NIGHT SEARCH TUESDAY
Jack Phillips, 14-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Phillips,
tenant on the B. E. Davis farm about one and one-half miles south of
Corbet, was found dead in Richland creek early Wednesday morning

He left the home of his parents to bait some fish hooks in the creek
about two o’clock Tuesday afternoon and when he failed to return
late Tuesday; a search was instituted for him that lasted all night,
the body being found face-downward Wednesday morning. Indications

toppled into the water. It is thought that his unknown assailant
shot him from behind, probably standing on the top of the bank, as

No funeral arrangements have been made but the body will likely be
interred at Corbet some time Thursday.
No motive for the dead has been advanced by the relatives and
neighbors.
Sheriff Notified.
The sheriff’s office was notified Wednesday morning and Deputy
Sheriff E. W. Warnell and Sam B. Jordan, justice of the peace left
early Wednesday morning for the scene of the tragedy and Sheriff W.
T. Wilson later went to the scene.
A number of hooks had been baited and the lad recently was evidently
was bending over preparing to bait his last hook when he was shot by
his assailant from behind. The cap of the boy was still on his head
when he was found.
The family recently moved to this county from West Texas and
relatives could not advance a theory as to the cause of the
shooting.
Surviving are his parents, three brothers and two sisters.
Judge Jordan held an inquest over the body of the lad Wednesday
morning and his coroner’s verdict was “death due to gunshot wounds
inflicted by an unknown person.”
Deputy Sheriff E. W. Warnell, returned to the vicinity of the
tragedy Wednesday afternoon to continue the investigation started
earlier in the day.

MEXICAN BOY HELD FOR INVESTIGATION IN
SLAYING OF LAD
BOY HELD DENIES HE EVEN KNEW YOUNG PHILLIPS, FOUND MURDERED
A Mexican boy about 13 or 14 years old is being held I the Navarro
county jail, although no formal charges have been filed against him, for
investigation in connection with the death of Jack Phillips, 14-year-old
son of Mr. and Mrs. G. R. Phillips, who reside on the B. L. Davis farm
about one and one-half miles south of Corbet.
The Mexican boy being detained here lives on the Carpenter farm in the
same community. He denies any knowledge of the shooting of young
Phillips and said Thursday that he did not know Phillips.
The body of young Phillips was found in about three feet of water in
Richland creek Wednesday morning by searchers who had scoured the creek
and creek bottom after the lad had failed to return home Tuesday
afternoon. He had been shot in the top of the head with a .22 calibre
rifle, apparently having been shot from behind, the bullet ranging
downward toward the eyes or nose. The lifeless body apparently toppled
over into the creek, face forward. He was killed instantly as there was
no water in the lungs.
Body Found in Water.
The lad left the family home about 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon to bait
some fish hooks he had set out in the creek. Investigation revealed that
he had baited several hooks and from the condition of the ground about
the last fishing place, was preparing to bait the hook when he was shot
by his assailant.
When he failed to return home late Tuesday afternoon, search was
instituted for him. When he was first found in the creek, it was thought
that he had fallen into the water and drowned but when the body had been
brought out to the bank of the creek, it was found that he had been shot
in the head. The boy’s cap was still on his head when he was found and
he had a nigger-shooter in one pocket and a can of worms for bait in the
other. A portion of a dead rabbit was nearby.
When the rescuers ascertained that foul play had caused the lad’s death,
they laid the body down and telephoned to Corsicana for officers. Deputy
Sheriff E. W. Warnell and S. B. Jordan, justice of the peace,
immediately went to the scene of the tragedy. Judge Jordan conducted an
inquest and returned a coroner’s verdict that death was due to gunshot
wounds inflicted by an unknown person. Sheriff W. T. Wilson also went to
the scene of the tragedy Wednesday morning and officers of the sheriff’s
department continued their investigations Thursday.
Funeral services for the youth were held Thursday with interment in
Corbet.
Surviving are his parents, three brothers and two sisters.
The family had resided in the Corbet community only a few months, having
moved there from West Texas. Members of the family and neighbors could
assign no motive or cause for the deed.

FRANK Granado, 15-year old Mexican boy, who had been held in the Navarro
county jail for investigation in connection with the death of Jack
Phillips, 14-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Phillips, one and
one-half miles south of Corbet, whose body was found with a .22-calibre
rifle wound in the top of the head in three feet of water in Richland
creek Wednesday morning after an all-night search had been carried on
after his failure to return home late Tuesday, was released from custody
by officers Friday morning about 10 o’clock. No charges were filed
against the youth. Officers are continuing their investigations on the
matter, but nothing definite has been reported.
The Phillips boy left his home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock to go to
the creek to bait some fish hooks. When he failed to return late Tuesday
afternoon, search was started.
The persons who found his body thought that he had fallen into the creek
and drowned when they found his body in the water but after they had
brought the life-less body to the bank of the creek, the wound in the
top of the head was discovered. The body was placed upon the ground and
officers in Corsicana notified.
Deputy Sheriff E. W. Warnell and Justice of the Peace Sam B. Jordon went
immediately to the scene of the tragedy and began their investigations.
Sheriff W. T. Wilson went to the place later in the morning.
Judge Jordan returned a corner’s verdict that death was the result of
gunshot wound inflicted by an unknown person.
Apparently the youth was shot from behind as he was preparing to bait a
fish hook. There was no water in the lungs, denoting that life was
extinct when the body reached the water. It is supposed that when he was
shot, he lurched forward, falling face downward into the creek.
Funeral services were held Thursday with interment at Corbet.
The family recently moved to the Corbet community from West Texas.
It is unlikely that the case will be presented to the present grand jury
but will be placed before the April term investigators.

CORSICANA, Texas, May 8. - Funeral services for William Davis Phillips, 82, who died at his home on Route 1, Frost, were held Wednesday at the Lake Chapel Cemetery in Northeast Freestone County.
Surviving are two sons, William J. Phillips, Grapevine, and Taylor T. Barnes, Corsicana; two daughters, Mrs. Myrtle O'Neill, Dallas, and Mrs. Emma Lee Menefee, Frost; a brother, B. F. Phillips, Fairfield; a sister, Mrs. Anna Hornsby; a sister, Mrs. Anna Hornsby, Camden, S. C.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Nancy Sue Davies
Nancy Sue Davies of Longmont, Colo., died Oct. 13, 2006, at Applewood Living Center. She was 74.
She was born Aug. 15, 1932, in Tyler to Carl Julius and Jewell Celine (Rone) Spornitz. She grew up in Corsicana.
She moved to Colorado in 1970 and was had been a resident of Longmont for the last 20 years.
She worked at Carmel Ltd. in Boulder, Colo., for 20 years before retiring.
She will be remembered as a very spiritual person who was a religious seeker and a true Christian.
She is survived by her daughter, Seline Peters and her husband Don of Peyton, Colo.; three sisters, Mary Ann Walls of Abilene, Peggy Ursery of Mullin, and Martha Hammack of Longmont, Colo.; three grandchildren, Kae Roth, Kathe Snyder and Justin Hejlik; and three great-grandchildren,
Christian Gunderson, Tyler Gunderson and Moriah Allen.
A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 16, 2006, at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel. Cremation took place at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory. Memorial contributions may be made to Elder Share and sent to Ahlberg Funeral Chapel, 326 Terry Street Longmont, CO 80501.

Mrs. Stewart was born Jan. 22, 1936 in Malakoff.

He was born Aug. 17, 1933, in Corsicana. He served in the National Guard during the
Korean Conflict. He also enjoyed performing with various bands at night clubs in Dallas, Houston and the local area.

Mrs. McNeese was born March 19, 1917, in Richland.

Selma G. Najera, 34, of Corsicana passed
away Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006, at Methodist Medical Center in Dallas.
Visitation with rosary will be held at 7 p.m. today at Corley Funeral
Home with the Rev. Danilo Ramos officiating. Services are pending at
Leonard Funeral Home in Carrizo Springs with interment will follow at
Mount Hope Cemetery.
Mrs. Najera was born Jan. 8, 1972, in Carrizo Springs.
Survivors include her husband Ernesto Najera of Corsicana; son, Zachery
Rene Najera of Corsicana; daughter, Marissa Ann Najera of Corsicana;
sisters and brothers-in-law, Esmeralda and Edgar Nandin of San Antonio
and Dalia and Ramon Garcia of Red Oak; parents, Eloy and Refugia Garcia
of Carrizo Springs; nieces, Yvette Nancin of San Antonio, Sabrina Garcia
of Red Oak, and Sabrina Vera and Samantha Vera, both of La Pryor;
nephew, Alexander Garcia of Red Oak; sister-in-law, Dora Najera of La
Pryor; and mother-in-law, Concepcion Najera of La Pryor.
