Charles “Chuck” Gleason Vess
d. Sep 26, 2006

Charles “Chuck” Gleason Vess made his final approach on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006, to be in the loving arms of his Heavenly Father, his Savior, after a long and courageous 10-year battle with cancer.

He is survived by his loving wife, Amelia “Annie” Vess of Lillian, Ala.; his son, Charles Michael Vess of Grapevine; daughter, Angela Sue Vess of Bedford; his grandson, Grant Michael Vess of Grapevine; stepdaughter, Barbara Phaup and her husband Tony of Medford, Ore., and her sons, John Louis and Robert Allred; stepdaughter, Carol Webb, and grandson, Erik Webb, of Grand Prairie; and a very special daughter to both Chuck and Annie, Sunny Parker and her husband Dr. Steve Parker and their children, Daniel, Brian, Casey and Paul of Mesa, Ariz.

Chuck attended school in Oak Valley at Corsicana and then he went to Robert E. Lee School and graduated from Corsicana High School in 1950. Chuck went to Navarro College in Corsicana, then he joined the United States Navy Cadet Program in 1953 for flight training and became a naval aviator in May 1955 as ensign, United States Navy. He served as a flight instructor with the rank of lieutenant in the United States Navy Reserve.

The loves of his life were his wife and family, sailing, HO gauge trains, wildlife, watching Bill O’Reilly of “Fox News,” classical music and a special love for his pets, Sally, Salty Dog and Sunny Kitty. At mid-life, Chuck was honored to have served as councilman for Mansfield. He was a HAM radio operator (K5DNH) and served in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. Capt. Vess was a pilot with American Airlines for 33 years. He officially retired from the airlines in November 1993. Chuck found a spiritual home at Perdido Bay United Methodist Church.

The family wishes to give special thanks to: Dr. Steve Moehle and his staff, Dr. David Phillips and his staff, Dr. Joanne Bujnoski and her staff, Dr. German Herrera and his staff, all of the nursing staff in chemotherapy at Sacred Heart Hospital, Dr. Steven P. Parker, Dr. Michael L. Hinni and staff at Mayo Clinic at Scottsdale, Ariz., the wonderful staff of Covenant Hospice of Alabama, Pastor Jack deJarnette and his wife Beverly, the entire family of Perdido Bay United Methodist Church, all of our friends and neighbors who have been supportive with their prayers, gifts, time, food and love.

Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, at Perdido Bay United Methodist Church with the service following at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Chuck’s memory may be made to PBUMC, in care of Chuck Vess Memorial Fund, 13660 Innerarity Point Road, Pensacola, FL 32507.

Shelbie Jean Pepos was born Oct. 20, 1955, and passed away on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006.

Memorial services for family and close friends will be held at 7 p.m. today at Corley Funeral Chapel. This service is to remember Shelbie’s wonderful spirit and love for the Lord, and know she is with Him and will be greatly missed.

Mary Alice Blackstone, 87, passed away Friday Sept. 22, 2006. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday with interment to follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Blackstone was born Dec. 12, 1918 in Marshall.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 32 years, Valton O. Blackstone, a son, two sisters and a brother.

She is survived by her son, Dennis O. Blackstone and wife Jeania of Arlington; grandchildren, Jayson and Craig Blackstone; great grandchildren Julia, Mallory and Noah Blackstone.

Iris Sheppard Cowan

Iris Sheppard Cowan was born on June 14, 1921. Her family have been residents of Navarro County since Texas was a Republic and she was the great granddaughter of Jon Pickett, an early settler of Navarro County.

She is survived by a son, Clinton Kerr-Cowan of Corsicana; daughter and son-in-law Bickie Cowan Roberts and Fred Alan Roberts of Mabank; two granddaughters Page Cowan Roberts of New York City, NY and Lauren Hope Roberts of Tyler; grandson and wife Jeffrey Alan Roberts and Stephanie Gasco Roberts; great granddaughter Autumn Savananna Roberts of Prescott, AZ; two sisters, Dorothy Nell Sheppard Housman of Ft. Worth and Audrey Sheppard Foster of Farmers Branch.

Mrs. Cowan was very proud of the 26 years she spent as an army wife and felt these years had greatly enriched her life. She was an active advocate for the mentally disabled, helping to start school programs at every new army assignment. She was one of the founders of the local chapter of the Navarro County Association for Retarded Citizens and served on the board of governors for many years.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Oakwood Cemetery. Family visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday evening at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Lucille Starks, 90, of Corsicana passed away on Thursday, September 21, 2006 in Corsicana. She was born on September 16, 1916 in Corsicana, Texas.
A bright light passed from us on Thursday, September 21, 2006. Lucille was loving, generous person who brightened all whom she came in contact with. In the last days and weeks during a tough struggle, she always had a big smile for all of her care givers regardless of how she felt or just what her condition was. Those smiles will be indelible on all our memories. She had a servants heart. From the days she waited tables at the Western Inn and Roy's Cafe, until her last years, when she loved to cook and sit back and watch people enjoy her wonderful meals. She always made sure there was plenty on her table. She had a very bright mind. She often had the Dallas Morning News crossword ouzzle worked before the sun came up. She also was quite a sports fan. The Texas Rangers and Dallas Cowboys won't be the same without her. She also rooted hard for Tiger, Ernie, Phil, and that cute one, Freddie. Now she joins her husband, Buddy, and her infant daughter, Sherrie Dale, in that family circle in Heaven. We will surley miss yoou, old girl!

Visitation will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 23, 2006 at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 24, 2006 at the Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery with the Rev. Bruce Carpenter officiating.

Lucille Starks

Pete Geddie

GEDDIE, Clint P. (Pete) age 78, of Mesquite, passed away September 21, 2006 after a courageous battle with cancer.

He lived in Corsicana, TX. for 25 years. He worked for Watkins Construction Co. in Corsicana for over 17 years, before retiring again in 2003.

Preceded in death by his mother, father, his brother, Henry and sister, Kathleen Wilder.

Donna Butler Whitgrove, 37, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2006, at Baylor Hospital in Dallas.

She was born Sept. 15, 1969, in Ennis, the daughter of Bobby and Susan Garner Butler. She was reared in the Ennis area, graduating from Ferris High School in 1988. On May 22, 1993, she married Lee Whitgrove of Irving. After their marriage they lived in Corsicana. She was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Corsicana. Her life was being a mother to her children.

She is survived by her husband, Lee Whitgrove of Corsicana; two sons, Shane and Hayden Whitgrove; five daughters, Lydia, McKinse, Anna Claire, Rebecca and Kimberlee Whitgrove, all of Corsicana; her father, Bobby Butler of Clifton; her mother, Susan Garner of Yanits; a sister, Debbie Butler of Emhouse; two nephews, Jacob Butler and Benjamin Wise; and a niece, Ovillia Wise. She was preceded in death by her stepmother, Margaret Butler.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Keever Chapel with Dr. John LaNoue officiating. Interment will follow at Bristol Cemetery.

Fannie Farmer Weaver Jones, 68, of Fort Worth left this earth to be with the Lord Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006, after a five-month battle with lung cancer.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Greenwood Funeral Home, 3100 White Settlement Road, Fort Worth.

Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Monday in Greenwood Chapel with Pastor Bob Mayberry of West Worth Baptist Temple officiating, where she was an active member until her illness.

Fannie was born Sept. 8, 1938, in Emhouse. She was retired from University of North Texas Health Science Center of Fort Worth where she was a dispatcher.

Fannie was preceded in death by her father, Wilburn Harney Farmer; mother, Georgie Perry Farmer; and brother, Johnny Farmer.

Vera Edna Blake Haden, 91, of Blooming Grove passed away Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006, in Corsicana.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Dresden United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jonathan Speegle officiating. Interment will follow at Dresden Cemetery.

Mrs. Haden was born April 13, 1915, in Henderson County near Athens to Robert Knox Blake and Mary Nixon Blake. She was a wonderful mother and wife. Her family was her profession. She loved sports on TV and in person. She loved her children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, W. A. “Buster” Haden on April 5, 1999; and her grandson, Jim Robertson.

J. T. Pass, 60, of Aledo died Monday, Sept. 18, 2006.

Memorial service was scheduled for 11 a.m. today at Holy Family Catholic Church with the Rev. Robert Wilson officiating.

John Thomas Pass was born March 21, 1946, in Monahans, the son of John and Evelyn Massey Pass. Mr. Pass developed real estate in Dallas and throughout Texas until 1986 with John Pass Investments. Beginning in 1988, Mr. Pass developed 80 restaurants in four states, the largest franchise of Whataburger Restaurants in the country, and was named Franchise of the Year multiple years.

Mr. Pass’ cattle won 11 National Chianina Champion titles (five grand and six reserve grand titles). In 2000, he was named Premier Breeder of the year. He was also chairman of the board of the National Chianina Association. J.T. was chairman of numerous fund-raising committees including the Fort Worth fund-raiser committee for the Southwest Region Chi Association and the Egg Extravaganza, both of which brought in record amounts in donations.

J.T.’s Pass Family Racing was accomplished in thoroughbred breeding and racing. Awards included winner of the Ramsey Purse 2003, Old South Handicap 2004, Harrah’s Juvenile 2004, Senorita Stakes 2005, and Old South Handicap 2006.

Recent business ventures include oil and gas exploration and production in the Texas Gulf Coastal area as well as his interest and board membership in First National Bank of Aledo.

J.T. was preceded in death by his mother, Evelyn Gaddy.

Survivors include his wife of 18 years, Carolyn Campbell Pass; daughters, Kristin Ann Pass and Kendall Marie Pass; son, Dax Howard Pass, his wife, Mary Lee, and their daughter, Mary Isabel Pass; daughter, Alex Pass Mizer and her husband, Stephen; father, John Pass and his wife, Diann, and her children, Christi and Shayne Walker and his wife Cindy; sisters, J’Nevelyn Melton and her husband, Larry, and Cindy Pass; aunt, Sammie Burnett; nephews and nieces; and Carolyn’s family, including her father, Dr. C. Nettie Sue Petty, 78, of Corsicana passed away Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006, in Corsicana.

Mrs. Petty was born Aug. 26, 1928, in Navarro County. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Community Chapel.

She was preceded in death by her husband, E.E. “Jelly” Petty; son, James Wade Petty; brother, Darrell Mosley; and sisters, Ruby Patton, Minnie Cooper, Jessie Bell, Billie Dill, Lola Thomas and Donnie Little.

Linda ‘Diane’ Paul

Linda “Diane” Paul, 57, of Kerens passed away Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006, in Houston.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home.

Services will be 3 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Kerens with Brother Wes Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Kerens City Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Allen Lundy, Paul Lundy, Lance Lundy, Brian Lundy, Mike Lundy and Homer Gene Wasson. Honorary pallbearers will be Chuck Weems and Conner Jennings.

Mrs. Paul was born April 25, 1949, in Kerens to Bill Inmon and Carol Gaddy Inmon. She had worked as an employee for the United States Postal Service for 26 years and had served as postmaster for both Barry and Powell post offices. She had a great love for her family and the communities in which she served. She had a passion for nature and spent countless hours working in the yard and watching birds.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband of 35 years, Larry Paul of Kerens; daughters, Lesli Caldwell and husband Brien, Lisa Paul of Wiley and Laura Wetchensky and husband Michael of Richardson; grandchildren including Zachary and Kaitlynn Wetchensky and one on the way by daughter Lesli; grandmother, Mable Lundy; sisters, Velma White of Kerens, Sherry Williams of McAlester, Okla.; half-sister, April Inmon; and step-siblings, Wilbert and Shelly Blackerby.

He owned & operated Central Monument Works in Corsicana for many years. He was a veteran serving as a T-SGT. in the U.S. Air Corps during World War II.

J.C. was born on June 26, 1917 to Martin Willey and Clara (Sands) Willey. He was a proud veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army in the Pacific Theater. He retired after 30+ years with Exxon. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mildred (Sawyer) Willey. He is survived by his son Martin Willey, daughter Anita Johnson and stepdaughter Peggy Thomas. Mr. W. Nolan Young, 83, died Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006, at the Baylor Specialty Hospital in Dallas. He was born April 20, 1923 in Frost, the son of Walter Lee and Clara Bell Young. He was reared in the Frost and Italy area, graduating from Italy High School. He then attended Navarro College and SMU, earning a degree in accounting. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army Air Corp in the European Theater. On April 4, 1942 he was married to Juanita Woodard. After their marriage they lived in Ennis. From 1979 to 1986 they lived in Chatham, VA where he was the plant manager for Ennis Business Forms. They returned to Ennis where he was the executive vice-president of the sales dept. at Ennis Business Forms. He retired in 1988. He was a member of the Baylor Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and a past member of the Lions Club. He is survived by his wife, Juanita, of Ennis; a son and his wife, El Voyde “Rod” and Linda Young of Ennis; a daughter and her husband, Juanette and George Beggs, Jr. of Ennis; two sisters, Joy Goddard of Hewitt and El Wanda LaRoche of Austin; four grandchildren, Andrea and Lacey Beggs, Bradley and Bryce Young; and two great grandchildren, Rylie and Harlie. He was preceded in death by a brother, Marvin Darrell Young in 1960. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Saturday in the Keever Chapel with Rev. Johnny Mansell officiating. J.B. Page Richardson Sr., 61, of Corsicana boarded his chariot to heaven on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006, from the second floor of Navarro Regional Hospital. A home-going celebration will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at Sixth Avenue Baptist Church, 125 N. Fifth St. The Rev. K.D. Davis will be the officiating minister and Brother Willie Wilmore the eulogist. Interment will follow at Woodland Cemetery. Wake service will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Ross and Johnson Mortuary.

Mr. Richardson was born Jan. 2, 1945, in Corsicana to Stella Massey Richardson and his stepfather Horace Richardson. He received his formal education in the Corsicana Independent School District, attending G.W. Jackson High School, where he was a football standout. As a young man, he became a positive role model for the youth of his community as a Gra-Y football coach. He also was very knowledgeable in the art of billiards, which he unselfishly shared with a countless number of young men.

He was preceded in death by his son, J.B. Richardson Jr.; his mother, Stella Richardson; his stepfather, Horace Richardson; and two sisters, Annie Lou Jones and Bertha Mae Lee.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Minnie Lee Richardson of Corsicana; two daughters, LaTonya Richardson of Arlington and Tamara Brown of Denver, Colo.; sons, Kelton (Franchell) of Gainesville and Micheal Ellison of Palestine; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ola Fields of DeSoto, Thelma Hicks and Zelma Curry of Dallas; and a host of nieces, nephews and many relatives and friends.

Terry Dean Barton, 64, of Dawson passed away Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, at a Waco hospital. A memorial celebration will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at First Baptist Church Family Life Center in Dawson.

Terry was born July 15, 1942, in Center to E.L. “Mutt” and Elwanda (Williams) Barton. He spent his early childhood in East Texas before moving to the Dallas area where he graduated from Kimball High School. Terry attended East Texas State University and the University of Texas at Arlington and was a long-time electrician in the D/FW area. He had lived in Dawson since 2001 after moving from Arlington. Terry rode with GWRRA Texas Chapter R for seven years. He loved his life and he loved his family dearly.

Terry was preceded in death by his parents and by a granddaughter, Dayna Sharp.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Rogers Barton; two sisters, Jeff Birch and husband Harold and Suzanne McKinley and husband Gary; four daughters, Debbie Klowsky and husband Mike, Shellie Byrne and husband Kyle, Becky Hamilton and husband Todd and Ralynn Bogard and husband Chuck; grandchildren, Christian, Chaz, Abbey, Neil, Brian, Claire, Seth and Tanner; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Tommy J. Bryant, 84, of Streetman was welcomed home by the angels of God on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006, after suffering a stroke on Sept. 23. He died in Corsicana.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Griffin-Roughton Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Mahoney officiating. Interment will follow at Birdston Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers will be A.K. “Kent” McGilvary, Harris Wilson Milner, W.L. “Lloyd” Robinson, Johnny Robinson, Larry Allen, J. Bruce Salter, Hulen Howell, James Pringle, F.A. Coleman, J.R. Wagner, Wylie Garrett, David North, Billy Datson and Billy Emerson.

Mr. Bryant was born Jan. 17, 1922, in Streetman to Ernest C. Bryant and Nora Lee Evarts. He graduated from Streetman High School in 1941 and enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve in May 1942 as an aviation cadet. Upon his discharge from the Naval Reserve, Tommy joined the U.S. Army in January 1943 as an AP armorer gunner being assigned as a crew member of a B-17 Bomber. Tommy flew 30 air offensive missions in Europe including Normandy and Northern France. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, the DFC and ETD Ribbon with three Battle Stars and obtained the grade of sergeant. He was discharged on Oct. 4, 1945, and returned to Streetman and married the love of his life, Mary Frances Thompson, on March 16, 1946. They moved to Fort Worth where he worked for the U.S. Postal Service until retirement. Tommy obtained his real estate license and moved to the Cedar Creek Lake area where he was a broker for several years. Then, he became a buyer for the Tarrant County Water District, again retiring effective 1995. Tommy and Frances returned to Streetman. Tommy became mayor of Streetman and founded Streetman’s annual July 4 parade. Tommy’s gifts to all who met him were his laughter, light heartedness, honesty and loyalty.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Frances Bryant; nieces, Melanie Bryant Elmore and Jean Cole Rainoshek; nephew, Ernest C. Bryant III; and their families. He is also survived by Mary Frances’ three brothers, John Thompson, Eldon Thompson and Billy Thompson, and their families.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Jones; her parents and 11 brothers and sisters.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Olva E. Ryan; her son, Kirwin Beck; and her brothers, Duane, Ralph, Harry and Virgil Wilkins.

She is survived by her brother, Homer “Bud” Wilkins; grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren as well as many longtime friends in Corsicana and especially at Friendship Towers.

Doris will be missed by many people but especially by Jimmy, Donna, Dusty and Dawn Rose who have been her steadfast friends and surrogate family for over 20 years.

Mr. Taylor was born Aug. 14, 1922 in Drane. He was employed with Shell Oil Company and lived in over 30 cities, retiring after 29 years of service as a seismic operator. He was a member of Northside Baptist Church. He loved to hunt, fish, woodworking and gardening. He really loved to drink coffee with his buddies at Whataburger in the mornings.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mattie Taylor; daughter-in-law, Judy Taylor; brother, Johnnie Taylor; sisters, Lillie Bowman, Iness Dosser, Mattie Godley, Pearl White and Dollie Taylor.

Mrs. Mary Louise (Roloff) McLain, 92, of Union High passed away Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006 at Navarro Regional Hospital in Corsicana.

Mrs. McLain was born Dec. 22, 1913 in Union High to Rudy and Winnie (Sawyer) Roloff. She lived all of her life in the Union High area, and was Valedictorian of her graduating class at Union High School. Mrs. McLain was a homemaker and a member of Northcrest Church of Christ in Mexia.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Franklin McLain; her parents; an infant daughter, Mary Beth McLain; and two brothers, Irvin Roloff and Clyde Roloff.

James Doyle (Jim) Jones, 69, of Corsicana passed away Friday, Sept. 29, 2006.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today in Coolidge Cemetery Chapel with Dr. David Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in Coolidge Cemetery.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Corsicana.

Jim Jones was born Nov. 15, 1936 in Coolidge. He was a graduate of Coolidge High School, and Texas A&M University. He married his high school sweetheart, Beverlye, in 1957. They had two children, both with advanced college degrees, and two grandsons. Jim worked 33 years with the Food and Drug Administration, retiring in 1995. He served 41 years with the Army Reserve, served a tour of duty in Desert Storm, and retired in 1996 with the rank of Colonel. He received the Legion of Merit award. He was very active during his retirement with the Lions Club, was past president of the Corsicana Sunset Lions Club, named Lion of the Year in 1998, received two International President’s Awards in 1999 and 2002, the Tom Kirkham Award in 2002, and was a life member of the Texas Lions Camp and Lions Eye Bank of Central Texas. Jim was named outstanding volunteer by the Texas Youth Commission in 2001, and was district nominee for a state award for the Adopt-A-Highway program in 1999. He was a past chairman of the Navarro County Waste Management Committee, Corsicana Advisory Council for the Texas Youth Commission and Corsicana/Navarro County Beautification Committee. He was a past secretary for the Navarro County American Red Cross, AARP Assistant State Coordinator/Instructor in the 55 Alive driver safety program. Jim’s life goal was to be satisfied that he made someone’s life a little better.

Survivors include his wife, Beverlye Jones of Corsicana; daughter, Sheryl Guardiani and her husband, John, of Alexandria, Va.; son, Doyle Jones and wife, Sandy, of Houston; grandchildren Danny Guardiani and Joseph Jones; sisters, Clara June Waldrop of Coolidge, and Gayle Jones Hettenger of Trinidad, Colo.

He was active in the Lions Clubs and served as past president of Corsicana Sunset Lions Club. He received many community awards for his service with children and various councils for the betterment of his community.
His life's goal was "To be satisfied that I have made someone's life a little better."

Gary G. Cooley, 56, of Corsicana passed away Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006 in Corsicana.

Gary G. Cooley was born June 30, 1950 in Corsicana. Gary was involved in many local service organizations, including the American Red Cross as a board member and chairman, the Navarro County chapter of the American Cancer Society as a board member and president and the Corsicana Housing Authority as a chairman and board member. He was a member of the Lions Club, the Corsicana/Navarro County Chamber of Commerce, Navarro College Real Estate Advisory Council, the Navarro County Board of Realtors, and most recently a member of the Kiwanis Club, the National Society of Tax Professionals, and treasurer of the Humane Society of Navarro County.

He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and was a past chairman of the Board of Deacons, Bench of Elders and treasurer of the Parish Council.

Gary was employed from 1973 to 1989 by First National Bank of Corsicana and served as a Senior Vice-president and head of the mortgage department for a number of years and was subsequently a Certified Public Accountant in private practice. He was a graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University and taught at Navarro College.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Troy and Lucille Cooley, both of Corsicana.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Mary Cooley of Corsicana; son Glenn Cooley of Las Vegas, Nev., and son and daughter-in-law Jonathan and Emily Cooley of Houston; daughters, Laura Ware and Lenora Cooley, both of Corsicana; grandson, Chandler Ware of Corsicana; brothers and sisters-in-law Jim and Diane Cooley of Corsicana, and Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Lumpkin of Fayetville, N.C.; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Harry David Redden of Corsicana; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Patti Redden of Tucson, Ariz; and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Robert M. ‘Bob’ Naughtin, 67, of Richland passed away Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006 at his home after a long illness.

Mr. Naughtin was born March 4, 1939 in Juneau County, Wisc., the son of James and Margaret (Scully) Naughtin. He was an eight year veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed in Germany and in the United States. He was a manager and employee of 7-11, Circle K and Skinny's for over 30 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and one sister.

Survivors include sisters, Eileen Walker and Margaret Hinrichs, both of Las Vegas, Nev., and by numerous nieces and nephews.

Yoko Baker, 77, of Corsicana passed away peacefully Friday, Oct. 6, 2006 in Corsicana.

Mrs. Baker was born Jan. 10, 1929 in Japan, and it was there she met and later married Herschell Baker. Together, Yoko and Herschell spent 46 wonderful years married before he passed away in 2001. She was a devoted wife and mother. She worked for a time as a nurse’s aide at Navarro Regional Hospital, and truly enjoyed giving of herself and her time to those who needed it. She enjoyed oil painting and gardening in her yard, but her greatest joys in life were her grandchildren. Yoko will truly be missed and lovingly remembered by anyone fortunate enough to have known her kindness.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herschell Baker, and by sons Michael Allen and Steven James.

Survivors include a daughter, Deborah Baker; grandchildren, Kyna LeAnn and Colton James of Galveston, and Erica Cheyenne of Corsicana.

Nelson, Art: KFWB, 1961-62; KLAC, 1973-82; KMPC, 1982-87. Art died of Parkinson's Disease October 15, 1999, at his home in Hemet. Art had been suffering with the disease for the past 12 years. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Nancy. Art started in radio as a 16-year-old broadcaster at a 250-watt in his home town of Corsicana, Texas. He worked for Gordon McLendon at KLIF-Dallas during the glory years and went on to dj at KEWB-San Francisco and WJJD-Chicago. The "Silver Fox" was 73.

Walter Allen Anderson

Kermit, TX
Walter A. Anderson, age 83, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, September 26, 2006 at his home in Kermit. He was born Tuesday, March 06, 1923 in Corsicana, Texas to the late T.W. and Bessie (Pond) Anderson. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Walter married Joyce M. Brininstool on June 6, 1942 in Kermit. Together they owned and operated the Dairy Queen franchises in Kermit, Monahans, and Pecos, as well as Walter’s Restaurant in Odessa until she preceded him in death on February 24, 2005. Walter had a Dairy Queen franchise for 57 years and was on the Texas Dairy Queen Operators Council board of directors.
Mr. Anderson graduated from Jal High School in 1940, earning honors as a state champion drummer. He went on to spend two years at Hardin Simmons University, where he was a member of the world famous Cowboy Band. He served his country during World War II in the US Army Air Corp and was a drummer in their band. After moving to Kermit in 1949, Walter became an active member of the Permian Basin community. He was a member of the Downtown Lions Club for 55 years. He was a member of the Odessa and Kermit Chambers of Commerce and an active member of the Ambassadors division in Kermit. He served on the KISD school board for 15 years. He was also involved in American Legion activities.
Those left to cherish his love and memories are two sons: Larry Anderson and wife Diana Vine-Anderson and Perry Anderson and wife Shiela, all of Odessa; two brothers: Jim Anderson of Snyder, TX and John Anderson of Abilene, TX; seven grandchildren: Lesa Sanchez and husband Louis of Midland, John Allen Anderson and wife Beverly of Flower Mound, TX, Brian Anderson of Cheyenne, WY, Amy Anderson of Denver, CO, Todd Cullison and wife Audra of Odessa, Matt Cullison and Tisha Corcoran both of Dallas; four great-grandchildren: Brandon and Matthew Sanchez and Allison and Quinten Cullison and a host of nieces and nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Joyce, one brother - Joe Anderson and one sister - Gladys Anderson.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 pm, Friday, September 29, 2006 at First United Methodist Church with Reverend David Weyant officiating. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren and nephews: Carl Brininstool, Mitchell Brininstool, Lindsay Brininstool, Matt Cullison, Todd Cullison, John Anderson, Lesa Sanchez, and Louis Sanchez. Michelle was born Dec. 12, 1975, in Dallas. She was a graduate of Hillsboro High School. While attending Hillsboro High School, Michelle represented her school at state tournament four years in a row.

She attended Sam Houston State University on a track scholarship. She graduated from Sam Houston State University and became a teacher/coach. She taught at Corsicana High School until she moved to Duncanville and made Duncanville Middle School her teaching home. She was dedicated to her profession and was in return loved by her students.

Michelle was a member of Calvario Bautista Iglesia in Corsicana and also supported financially a Baptist mission in Monterey, Mexico.

In her short life, she made tons of friends. While she will be missed, she will not be forgotten and she continues to live in our hearts forever.

Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Maria and Pantaleon Rios of Corsicana; father, Mickey Chavez of Dallas; sisters, Criselda, Carol and Gloria; brothers, Carlos, Henry, Freddie, Pete Jr., Napoleon and Jacory; grandmother, Rosa Rios of Dallas; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jessie Carl Smith, 77, of Blooming Grove passed away Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006, at M.D. Anderson Hospital after a short illness.

Memorial services will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Griffin-Roughton Chapel in Blooming Grove with the Rev. Mickey Loftis officiating. Interment will be held in Glenallen, Alaska.

Mr. Smith was born April 20, 1929, in Dresden to Jim and Mattie Smith. He attended Blooming Grove schools, completing his education in the United States Air Force after proudly joining in 1947. Mr. Smith was honorably discharged in 1950. Four years later, Carl married Elvera “Vera” Haglund from Duluth, Minn., and together they had three children: Susan, Cory and Kelly. As a pipeline welder, Mr. Smith traveled the world on many jobs, but always called Blooming Grove his home.

Mr. Smith was a member of the Pipeliners Union, Local 798, as well as a proud member of the Masonic Lodge where he was a 33rd degree mason.

He and his family were great lovers of the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and hunter his entire life. Carl was a quiet man for sure, and conversations were short, but it was common knowledge he would do anything and everything for a friend or loved one. He loved the community he lived in and was proud of its people and their accomplishments. From working on the park in Blooming Grove to playing Santa Claus for the Corsicana elementary schools, Carl enjoyed seeing that everyone around him was always happy.

He was preceded in death by his son, Cory Smith; his wife, Vera Smith; his brother, Earl Smith; and his sister, Rose Jennische.

Survivors include his children, Kelly Smith of Alabama and Susan Loftis and husband Terry of Corsicana; grandchildren, Cory and Erica Loftis of California; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He grew up in Rusk County and retired as a master sergeant after 24 years in the Air Force. During the service, he traveled extensively to Europe, Africa and Asia. He also retired as a maintenance supervisor for The University of Texas at Austin after 24 years. He retired to Richland-Chambers Reservoir area for the past seven years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert Lee Faulkner; three sisters, Catherine Faulkner Shivers, Mozell Hoffman and Bonnie May Faulkner.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma Faulkner of Corsicana; son, William Robert Faulkner of Longview; twin sister, Sue Ray of Powell; and sister, Dorothy Dowden of Valparaiso, Fla.

Mrs. Freeman passed away Monday, Oct. 9, 2006, in Corsicana. She was born in Crockett and grew up in Houston County graduating from Latexo High School in 1939. She was a member of the Teague Church of Christ for over 50 years. Mrs. Freeman worked in Teague for many years at Palace Drug Store then later went to work for the Mexia State School as a trainer where she remained until she retired. She loved to sew and especially enjoyed making quilts which she gave to her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband of over 39 years, Thomas C. Freeman of Wortham; son, Edward “Bo” Hearn and wife Debbie of Chattanooga, Okla.; daughter, Doniece Ferguson and husband Paul of Corsicana; stepson, Tommy Freeman and wife Toni of Anchorage, Alaska; seven grandchildren, Lenson Hearn and Chris Hearn, both of Cache, Okla., Devin Martin of Chattanooga, Okla., Cori Ogburn and David Ferguson, both of Corsicana, Patrick Freeman and Kathleen Freeman, both of Anchorage, Alaska; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Lena Burks of Huffman; special friend and caregiver, Estella Washington of Wortham; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Iva Mae Moore Price, age 78, of Waxahachie, passed away Monday, Oct. 16, 2006, at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas. She was born Aug. 26, 1928, in Decatur to Stanford and Dora (Garrett) Moore. She married Marvin Price on Jan. 31, 1953, in Corsicana. They moved to Waxahachie in 1972 and have been longtime members of the College Street Church of Christ, where she was a Sunday School teacher. Iva was a caregiver and her love for children was evident in her work with the Tuesday and Thursday School and Vacation Bible School.

Survivors include her loving husband of over 53 years, Marvin Price of Waxahachie; daughter, Donna Cooke and her husband Larry of Waxahachie; son, Wayne Price and his wife Tammy of Hubbard; and daughter, Penny Hernandez of Pennsylvania; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brothers, Sid Moore, Alvin Moore and Bud Moore; sisters, Mary Johnson, Fay Steen, Margaret Jenkins, Frances Whitner and Mollie Southard.

She was preceded in death by one brother, James Moore.

Robert Boyd McMullan was born Oct. 6, 1920, in Tupelo. He graduated from Corsicana High School in 1938. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. After completing flight school he flew many missions in the ferrying command. He also flew C-47 aircraft in the India theater during World War II. He attained the rank of captain during his term of service, leaving active duty in 1946. He was employed by Mobil Oil Company for over 30 years. He was an active member of Cornerstone Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Wilma McMullan of Corsicana; son and daughter-in-law, Boyd and Dorothy McMullan of Arlington; daughter and son-in-law, Roberta and Jim Lorance of Austin; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Kathi McMullan of Corsicana; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Dana Young of Springfield, Mo.; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Sherman Kyles of Conroe; sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Frank Roberts of Waco; and brother and sister-in-law, Charles Dewey and Ann McMullan of College Station.

Cordia “Sam” was born May 13, 1938 in Byers, Okla., to Jack and Pauline Giddens Hankins. She was a graduate of Hart High School. She worked for Continental Telephone Company in Dimmitt and Dallas for many years. Sam moved to Hereford in 1973 from Dallas. She married T. H. Sossaman on May 12, 1973 in Dimmitt. She was owner of Sam’s Liquor Store in Hereford for many years and co-owner of Sossaman Trucking Company of Hereford. Her husband preceded her in death on March 3, 1999.

Sam is survived by one son, John Smith and wife Debra of Corsicana; one daughter, Brenda Busby and husband Brice of Hereford; two brothers, Ted Hankins and wife Betty of Hart; Jim Hankins and wife Glenda of Wellton, Ariz.; a special niece Paula Hankins of Dublin, Ga.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of many friends.

Her husband, George Smith, a daughter Georgia Shadix and a grandchild, Sandra Gail, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons Charles Smith and wife Faye, Carl Smith and Harvey Smith and wife Michelle, daughter Dorothy McMullan and husband Boyd, all of Arlington; son-in-law John Shadix Sr. of Cleburne; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Anne Roberts Albritton passed away Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006.

Anne, a lifetime student of music enjoyed the richness of teaching, composing and arranging music and musicals. She was the church organist and choir director at St. John’s Episcopal Church and Westminster Presbyterian Church in Corsicana and Lakewood United Methodist Church in Dallas. Anne also accompanied The Turtle Creek Chorale and The Women’s Chorus of Dallas. For three years she was the assistant to the head of St. John’s Episcopal School in Dallas.

Born Jan. 26, 1940, in Amarillo, she later called Corsicana and Dallas home. Anne’s family includes Mrs. Margaret Roberts; Mike and Karen Albritton and their children Caleb, Ben and Matthew; John Albritton and Jennifer Garner; Julie Kelly and her daughter Maggie; Trigger Butler; Elaine Roberts; and Oliver and Helen Albritton.

Anne’s extended family includes the men, women and children of her neighborhood and the city of Dallas, throughout the state of Texas and all across the United States who listen, play and sing her music.

A celebration of Anne’s life and music, a service of worship and the Holy Eucharist will be held at 4 p.m. Nov. 12 at Lakewood United Methodist Church, 2443 Abrams Road, Dallas.

For 66 years Anne’s life and music filled our hearts and souls. Her music will stay alive with gifts made in her name to Lakewood United Methodist Church Organ Fund, The Turtle Creek Chorale, The Women’s Chorus of Dallas, and St. John’s Episcopal School.

Anne and her family give their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Anne’s friends, caregivers, nurses and physicians. “All of you have blessed my life with friendship, care and compassion.”

Mr. Hodge owned and operated Hodge Plumbing Company for over 30 years until his retirement. He was a member of Westside Baptist Church, and was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. William E. Thomas of Corsicana, passed away at Navarro Regional Hospital on October 20, 2006. He was born on July 30, 1923 to Rev. Charles Thomas and his Wife Anna Faye, in Prosper, Texas. He also served his country in the United States Navy during the second world war, in the Pacific Theater. He was awarded a commendation for gallantry for actions during a storm, in which he successfully navigated his landing craft, allowing his contingent of Marines to reach shore safely. He was a sales representative for the Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. Mr. Thomas was a long time member of First United Methodist Church in Corsicana, serving on the church board.
He is survived by his wife Sibyl Thomas of Corsicana, daughter and son-in-law Marilyn and Anthony D. Farmer of Livermore, California, daughter and son-in-law Carol and Clarence Shugart of Willis, sister Lorraine Spence of Dallas and his brother Rev. Kenneth Thomas, also of Dallas. He is also survived by his grandchildren Kirsten Banks, William Farmer, Matthew Farmer, Gwyn Shugart and Karrie Shugart.

Ina Mae Nash, 90, passed away late Sunday night, Oct. 23, 2006, at Heritage Oaks West Nursing Home in Corsicana. She was born Jan. 23, 1916, in Ellis County, the daughter of Benjamin F. and Una Deluah Slocum Cooke. She was reared in the Bethel and Boyce communities. On Nov. 25, 1936, she was married to Wesley Woodrow Nash. After their marriage they lived in Ellis County. She was a seamstress for Donovan-Galvani from 1962 to 1982. She was a member of the Bardwell Church of Christ. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother. She loved her grandchildren, sewing and enjoyed her family.

She is survived by her husband, Wesley; two sons and their wives, Donald and Mary Nash of Waxahachie and Gary and Sandra Nash of San Antonio; a daughter and her husband, Carol and Dr. Bobby Barham of Corsicana; three brothers, Ralph Cooke, Wendell Cooke and Billy Cooke; five sisters, Geneva Dyess, Frankie Lord, Mary Patman, LaRue Dyess and Betty Venable; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Hollis Cooke and Fred Cooke; and a sister, Phama Garritson.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Keever Chapel with Ferman Carpenter officiating. Interment will follow at Myrtle Cemetery in Ennis.

Ted B. Spencer

The Rev. Ted B. Spencer, age 74, died on Monday, Oct. 23, 2006 at Morningside Manor, where he was cared for during the last 10 years of his life.

Ted was born in Mexia to Charles Roy Spencer and Bessie Ollie Brown Spencer. He is survived by his wife, Pat Allen Spencer, of San Antonio; daughters, Tedi Spencer Elliott of Spring Branch, Jean Spencer Neesley of Arizona and son, Scott Allen Spencer of Houston; grandchildren, Katherine Irene Elliott, William Spencer Elliott, Sean Michael Neesley and Lindley Allen Callicoat Spencer.

Ted graduated from Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University and was first appointed to Eureka Methodist Church; then as Associate Minister at First Methodist, Corsicana, and founded Davis Memorial Methodist Church in North Richland Hills, Fort Worth. He served as Associate Minister for five years at the First United Methodist Church in Corpus Christi. Ted was Director of the Texas Mental Health Association and was instrumental in organizing and directing many programs for the MHMR Association.

A service celebrating Ted’s life will be held on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2006, 1:30 p.m. at Windcrest United Methodist Church, 8101 Midcrown Drive, San Antonio. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Blooming Grove following a memorial service at 1:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 27, 2006 at Blooming Grove United Methodist Church.

The family is so grateful for the excellent care given to Ted by the devoted staff at Morningside Manor’s Alzheimer’s unit, for the 10 years he was there, and to the compassionate caregivers at VITAS Innovative Hospice Care.

He was a longtime resident of Lumberton before moving to Mauriceville 16 years ago, he retired as a Rigger Foreman with the Mobil Oil Refinery in Beaumont and he was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II. W.A. ‘Bill’ Jennings - 01/11/07

W.A. “Bill” Jennings, 76, of Corsicana passed away Jan. 9, 2007, at a Waco hospital. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 12, at Pecan Grove Funeral Home, 3124 Robinson Drive, Waco. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be at Robinson Cemetery.

Bill was born on May 18, 1930, in Downsville to W.A. and Jewell Alsup Jennings. He was married to Ruby Courtney on Nov. 3, 1953, in Lorena. He served in the U.S. Navy from December 1955 to September 1957. He worked for International Paper Company from 1957 to 1974, and retired from Central Freight Lines in 1996. His CB handle was “stump jumper.” He loved to fish and hunt, go camping, and spend time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby Courtney Jennings; children, Garry Jennings and wife Dorothy of Mesquite, Valarie “Shorty” Contreras and husband Rene of Corsicana, and Chris Jennings and wife Linda of Texarkana; grandchildren, April and Jason Jennings, Justise and Austin Contreras, and Tyler and Blake Jennings; great-grandchild, Aaron Jennings; brothers and sisters, Estelle Cleveland, Bob and wife Merl Jennings, and Cindy and husband Roy Cantrell; and numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.
