Colonel Paul M. Bennett
abt 1921 - Sept 12, 1996

Colonel Paul Bennett, a lifelong Corsicanan, except for his years of school and military service, was called to his maker Sept. 12, 1996, after a losing battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 20, at St. John's Episcopal Church.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of St. John's Laymans League.

Paul has asked that, in lieu of flowers, that all honoraria be given to St. John's Columbarium Fund or Lion's Club's children's charities.

Paul served his country in military service for 28 years, attending Texas A&M before and after WWII, where Paul served as a Mountain Infantry Company Commander before being wounded in the Po Valley of Italy. He took his degree in Agronomy, with graduate studies in Soul Physics and Chemistry, and in Nuclear Engineering, serving most of his latter military years in the Nuclear Weapons career field, retiring in 1970. His military decorations include the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, Commendation Medals, Combat Infantry Badge and eight other decorations and service medals.

After military "retirement", Paul was very active as a rancher, serving as organizing President and Board Chairman of the Golden Circle Simmental Breeders Association, hosting many beef cattle tours and special events at his ranch, the "B&B". He was also active in the Lions club, serving as treasurer, member of the board of directors, Bulletin editor, "Tail Twister" and many times as a delegate to state and district conventions.

Paul was active in the political life of his county and city, serving as delegate to county and state Democratic Conventions, and as a member of the Corsicana City Council. He also served in Corsicana's "mentoring program and in tutorials for needy children.

Paul was even more active in St. John's Episcopal Church, serving variously as warden, vestryman, acolyte, lay minister, treasurer, delegate to Diocesan Conventions, and as a charter member of the Layman's League. He was also a director and strong supporter of the Corsicana House of Refuge, the local home for battered wives and families.

In spite of all his many accomplishments and achievements, shared by few, Paul will be best remembered as a devoted husband and father, a dedicated citizen and churchman and a good and irreplaceable friend. He could walk into any dim or dull room and brighten it. He could walk into discord and with his great humor, quieten it.

He is survived and beloved by his wife, Doris Bennett of Corsicana, daughters Roxanne (Mrs. Roberts) Parsons of San Antonio and Victoria (Mrs. William) Phillipi, of Berlin, Wis., four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, all of the members of his church family at St. John's Episcopal Church, and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and in-laws.

Paul was preceded in death by his father, Drewer Berton Bennett; his mother, Louise Palmer Bennett, siblings Percy Berton Bennett and Dorothy Neil Bennett. Paul would have been 76 next month.

Notes:

In Memoriam.
Written in memory of our son and brother, Homer L. Lamb, who was born on May 18, 1903, near Frost, Navarro County, Texas, and died Feb. 5, 1926. He was employed by the Simms Oil Co., at Dallas, Texas. He had gone to work at 7 o’clock Friday morning and at 7:15 was overcome by gas fumes and then drowned in a tank car of gasoline and death was instantaneous. He had formerly been employed by the Magnolia Oil Co. at Corsicana, where many of his friends live. Relatives or friends never dreamed that death was so near. He is survived by his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Lamb, Mrs. O. R. Tanner, Coleman Lamb, myself and Louise Lamb all of Dawson.
Homer was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church at Dawson, joining there in 1922. His funeral was conducted by the Rev. Mr. Howell of Corsicana and the Rev. Mr. Etherige of Milford, in the Baptist Church at Frost on Feb. 6, at 3 p.m.
There was a large crowd of sorrowing friends and many beautiful flowers were placed on his grave to show the love of his friends had for him.
We don’t believe there was ever a sadder death or greater shock than when this sad news was received. We know that the old must soon pass away, but it seems that when one is young and full of vigor that we can not realize that without a moment's warning, that they, too, must pass from this world to try the realities of the Great Beyond. He was just blooming into manhood, was just 23 years, 8 months and 18 days old and it seemed to us that a long and useful life was before him, but alas, he is gone, but we trust to a far better place than this and that today he is at rest and is awaiting for the time when the grave's will give up their dead bodies and the spirit will return to the God who gave it and the body will put on immortality and body and spirit will then be united and will ever praise the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave His life to ransom our friend and all others who will accept Him as their Savior as he did.
Close to the side of my Savior divine,
Letting Him lead me along.
Wonderful gladness and sunshine is mine,
Always my soul has a song.
Life is so pleasant when Jesus is near,
Bright is the light of His smile;
Trusting completely in Him I can hear,
Whispers of love all the while.
He will uphold me till Heaven I see,
Keep me His own by His grace;
Then in his presence I always shall be,
Bright with the light of His face.
His body was laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery at Frost. Tender sympathies are extended to the bereaved.
Our loved one has passed away,
To that bright sinless world above.
A Christian life he lived while here
He trusted in the Savior's love.
He now has crossed the chilly tide,
Into the realms of pure delight
And dwells with Christ in Heaven's home
Where cometh no more shades of night.
He's resting now within His care,
With all the happy blood-washed throng,
With saints and angels there to dwell,
And ever praise the Lord in song.
We hope one day to meet him there.
In yonder mansions bright above,
And with him ever sing the praise
Of Jesus’ great redeeming love.
--Brother
