Bettie Faye (Rash) Jones
Sep 23, 1939 - Jan 17, 2021

Bettie Faye Jones passed away January 17, 2021 at the age of 81.

Bettie was born September 23, 1939 in Corsicana to Emma and Roy Rash. Growing up with her five sisters and one brother, Bettie spent a lot of time with her childhood friend Martha Snowden (Coller). She graduated from Corsicana High School.

Bettie was married to her husband Doug for thirty-seven years on November 10th. They met after moving back to Corsicana from Houston. She had two sons Stevie Earl Baldwin and Ricky Baldwin, and a daughter Donna. To Doug, she was the "most loving wife and mother," and her daughter Donna called her "my hero." Known as Nannie to everyone, she welcomed all into her house. She was known for her cooking, and there was always plenty. Bettie was a wonderful cook, and her favorite was steak. She never followed a recipe - it was all upstairs. She taught her family in the kitchen.
Bettie worked for Brookshires for fourteen years as their office manager. She also managed the deli at Navarro College for eighteen years. It was bittersweet when she retired from the college. Bettie was the hardest worker ever seen.

As hard as she worked, Bettie also loved to have fun. She would go gambling in Shreveport and to Vegas once. She loved when her sister Judy was able to go with her to the Horseshoe in Shreveport. She also absolutely loved to go dancing with her husband Doug at the VFW.

In order to honor Bettie's life, her family has planned a visitation from 6-8 PM on Friday, January 22 at Corley Funeral Home. There will be a graveside service on Saturday, January 23, 2021 at 11 AM at Oakwood Cemetery.

Melissa Sue (Gorman) Carroll-Woehleke
Dec 26, 1946 - Jan 13, 2021

Melissa Sue Gorman Woehleke, born December 26, 1946 in Corsicana, Texas, went home to be with her Lord Jesus Christ on January 13, 2021.

She passed away from lung cancer at her home in Marlin, Texas, surrounded by her loving family.

Melissa is preceded in death by her husband, William Phil Woehleke, her parents Marguerite McMullan Gorman and Stanley Fletcher Gorman, and her brother Stanley Mac Gorman and Sister-in-law Nell Sloan Gorman.

Melissa was survived by her only child, Stacie Carroll Eisenbise and her husband Ben of Marlin, Texas. She was beloved 'Meme' to Grandson Morgen Beams and fianc Angelica of Houston,Texas, Granddaughter Brittany Brice and her husband Brandon of Willis, Texas and Grandson Joel Gonzales of Willis, Texas, and youngest Grandson Tyler Eisenbise of Marlin, Texas. She became 'Hunny' to five great grandchildren Morgen Beams Jr (Baba), Maxton Beams, Colton Brice, Emma Rose Gonzales and Merrick Beams, who all held a very special place in her heart. Melissa was the baby of the family and is survived by her Sisters, Margie Gorman Taylor and husband Ted, and Debra Gorman of Corsicana, Texas. Melissa cared deeply for her nieces and nephews and their families, Jan Gorman Holden, Stanley Gorman Jr, Brett Gorman, Coy Harry, Jennifer Taylor Petty, Carrie Harry Gorman, Ted Gorman Taylor and Jessica Taylor Esquivel, and also loved and enjoyed all of her many cousins.

Melissa is a graduate of Corsicana High School and was studying accounting and working in Dallas when she met Phil Woehleke who was working as an engineer at Texas Instruments. Melissa and Phil were married July 24, 1975. She gratefully chose to be at home with her daughter Stacie Carroll, child from previous marriage to Reginald Carroll, and to be involved in Blue Bird activities and soccer games. She devoted herself to her family and served them all in many different ways. She expressed her love for life as an artist and shared herself through creative, beautiful paintings and objects of art. She had many other interests which included coin collecting, bird watching and playing card games with family and friends.

One of her great desires was to see The Ark Encounter In beautiful Kentucky. When she expressed that wish in December, daughter Stacie quickly put together a trip of a lifetime. The trip included daughter Stacie, her sisters, Margie and Debra, and niece Jenni. It was the perfect trip, an inspiration and a great time with five women whose love held no bounds. Melissa continued to talk about that last trip and was so proud to have made it and to be reminded of the wonderful, blessed life she had led.

We would like to express our gratitude to Baylor Scott & White Hospice, Waco, with a special thanks to Melissa's nurse, Teri.

Due to the Covid pandemic, the family has decided against a formal service as our family are all huggers. Instead the family has chosen to honor her with a graveside service for family and close friends.

A visitation will be held on Friday, January 15, 2021 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Corley Funeral Home. Masks are required and social distancing is strongly encouraged.

A private service for family and close will be held on Saturday in Corsicana, Texas with Rankin Koch officiating.

In lieu of flowers, and because of Melissa's giving nature to those in need, the family suggests donations be made to the local charity of your choice or Compassion Corsicana, P.O. Box 2256, Corsicana, Texas 75151.

Peggy (O'Neal) Farmer
Nov 8, 1928 - Jan 8, 2021

Peggy O'Neal Farmer, a longtime Corsicana and Duncanville resident, passed peacefully on Friday, January 8, 2021 in her residence at the age of 92. She was born on November 8, 1928 in Emhouse, Texas to Ora Cannon Gracy and George Roy O'Neal. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Walter Farmer and by her brothers George Wayne O'Neal and John Thomas O'Neal.

She is survived by their only child, Susan Farmer Kheshtinejad of Dallas and twin grandchildren, Gracy and Garrett Kheshtinejad.

Peggy was always known for her quick wit and sound advice. She graduated salutatorian from Emhouse High School, attended San Angelo College, Navarro College and received her Associate's Degree from Mountain View College after moving to Duncanville, Texas in 1967. She married her husband, Walter Farmer of Corsicana on October 25, 1947. Throughout her life, Peggy worked for the federal government both at the Internal Revenue Service and the Department of Energy. Thereafter, Peggy retired and helped run an antique business while her husband aided and operated the connecting car repair business. Steadfast in support of her loved ones, she never missed an opportunity to attend an event that her family was involved in. She loved music and passed this appreciation on to her daughter and grandchildren.
The couple often enjoyed traveling in Walter's 1930 Model A Ford Coupe, shopping for antiques whilst traveling, and serving the community of Duncanville in business and support for nearly 30 years. They were both longtime members of First Presbyterian Church in Duncanville.

In retirement, they decided to return to their hometown of Corsicana. Peggy always had an avid interest in Navarro County history and volunteered several times a week at the Corsicana Visitors Center. She loved history, journalism and writing. This was evident not only in her own research of her genealogy but in her correctness towards grammar and structure. After all, she was relied upon heavily to proof-read many important memos and documents for others in high pressure situations. They transferred their church membership to First Presbyterian Church of Corsicana.

After her husband's death in 2009, Peggy stayed in Corsicana for a few more years. She then decided to move to Dallas so she could be closer to her daughter, Susan. She lived at The Villages of Dallas for nearly ten years with her little yorkie, Winston. Everyone, throughout her time there, loved Peggy and always watched her run around with her dog. The two of them made a great team.

Peggy will always be remembered and missed as a loyal friend, a woman of great intelligence, and especially as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

A graveside service will be held at Oakwood Cemetery in Corsicana on January 31, 2021 at 3:00 pm. Honorary pallbearers are Mike O'Neal, Alan Roberts, Spencer Beal, Gary Mitchell, Reza Kheshtinejad and Garrett Kheshtinejad. This will be a smaller gathering and all those in attendance should follow current CDC guidelines as they pertain to larger gatherings.

Betty Kay (Coker) Smith
Aug 26, 1944 - May 29, 2022

1Peter 4:10-11 reminds us that "Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ."
A loving mother and grandmother with a servant's heart, Betty Kay Smith passed away May 29, 2022, at the age of 77.
Betty was born August 26, 1944 in Corsicana to Paul Wesley and Estell Bryant Coker. Her parents were share croppers who also had cattle and a family garden. Growing up in Barry, Texas, she and her older sister Marie were very close, so Betty always had a playmate. They spent the summers picking cotton with their parents. An honor roll student, she was crowned homecoming queen her senior year. After graduating from Blooming Grove High School, Betty went on to obtain an associate's degree from TJC in her late 60s.
Betty married Marvin Smith in 1978. The two met at a company meeting she attended at a Big Boys Diner or IHOP, although he was just a patron of the restaurant and not part of the meeting. They married in her home in Plano and remained married until he passed. A wonderful mother to her sons Anthony and Edward, she raised them for a few years as a single mother, juggling work, home, and her two boys. With her caring heart, she never let them go without, although she often threatened to "pinch your head off" when they were being ornery.
Together with her husband Marvin, Betty owned and operated Barry Dental Lab until Marvin got sick in 1993. They had a lot of fun together too, as Marvin introduced her and her sons to camping and Good Sam's Club. She was hooked and continued participating until the day before she passed. She enjoyed annual Winnebago gatherings in Ohio and a couple trips to Mexico with her camping group, along with a cruise to Key West.
Betty lived out her strong faith through her involvement in church. She was part of Troup Women's Civic Organization (TWCO), being recognized as Woman of the Year, and helped out at the First United Methodist Church food pantry. She had a true servant's heart, and was always giving people a helping hand with rides to appointments, food, clothes, and handmade gifts.
Betty loved cooking, baking, and sewing. She enjoyed crafting and making things, shopping, and of course camping. As part of several camping groups, she helped out in many ways, from food, to secretary, and much more. She loved to travel and fellowship with people. She enjoyed a good chicken fried steak along with fruit salad.
Betty leaves behind her son and daughter-in-law Anthony and Sarah Deramee; her son and daughter-in-law Edward and Kelli Deramee; her grandchildren Alexis Turner and her husband Sean Turner, Zachary Deramee, Kaitlyn Deramee, Michael Callais, and Wesley James Deramee; and her great grandson James Henry Turner.
To honor Betty's life, her family has planned a visitation on Friday, June 3, 2022 from 11:30 to 1:30, followed by a graveside service at 2 PM in Dresden Cemetery.

Molly Malinda (Whitener) Satterwhite-Wylie-Hasten
Sep 5, 1964 - Jun 18, 2022

Molly Malinda Hasten passed away June 18, 2022, at the age of 57.
Malinda was born September 5, 1964 in Big Spring, Texas to Rufus and Frances Whitener. Rufus worked on cotton gins his entire life, even owning several patents for parts he invented. Frances is a cosmetologist and owns her own beauty shop, the "Magic Mirror" in Italy, Texas. Growing up as the baby of the family with big brothers Rocky John Whitener and Rodney Whitener, Malinda was a tomboy who spent most of her time outside. She loved to play with any snakes and horny toads she found. She and her best friend- her Shetland she named Commanche - spent hours playing the Lone Ranger and Silver, even doing tricks off his back. Every summer she would fly down from Lubbock to spend the summer at her Aunt Mollie's spending the days horseback riding or helping on the farm. Attending school in Wolfforth her entire life, she completed ninth grade in Friendship, where she loved basketball and English. Her teenage years were mostly a blur, as she lost her brother Rocky in a car wreck at this time.
Malinda married her high school sweetheart, Kevin Satterwhite, at the tender age of 16 and had her first-born Amanda at 17. As she always said, her daughters Amanda LeBlanc, Kelsey Whitener, and Shelby Hasten were her reason for living. When her granddaughter Elena was born, she was so excited and loved spending time with her as well. Life was not always easy, and she often struggled to pay the bills, but she always managed to keep them fed and taken care of. Malinda put her girls first and worked long hours in order to provide for them. She worked in management almost her entire life, and even ran a successful movie rental business. Her last job before getting too sick to work was Sally Beauty, which was her favorite, since she had been a cosmetologist for many years.
Malinda was loud - her tone of voice was always mid-yell. She had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. She liked to find joy in the "little things," and always loved her family and friends and was always there to support them. She enjoyed traveling all over the United States in an RV during family trips, visiting Disneyland, and loved going to Mexico on their annual trip. A member of the Church of Christ, she prayed for everything and put her faith in the Lord. Having her children be baptized meant the world to her.
In her free time, Malinda liked watching a traveling couple live on a boat on YouTube. She loved collecting Star Trek and Wizard of Oz collectibles, and had a huge zebra collection as well. She loved chicken fried steak, and they would sneak away to Dallas to Saltgrass Steakhouse to get her fix of it. She also loved cherry mash. Malinda was a very loving woman with a big heart. She made friends with random strangers and was very personable.
Malinda leaves behind her mother Frances Whitener, her daughter and son-in-law Amanda and Graymond LeBlanc, her daughter Kelsey Whitener, her daughter Shelby Hasten, and her granddaughter Elena Whitener. She is reunited with her brothers Rocky John Whitener and Rodney Whitener.

Miriam Glynn (Jenkins) Bounds-Brennan-Bounds
Mar 10, 1931 - Mar 25, 2020

It is with a sad heart we share the passing of Miriam Glynn Jenkins Bounds on Wednesday, March 25, 2020.

Miriam was born on March 10, 1931 in Streetman Texas to Frank Bates Jenkins and Willie Fair Sherrod Jenkins. She graduated from Brenham High School in 1948. Upon graduation, she moved to Dallas, where she married Gene Alan Bounds in 1949. They made a home in Dallas and created a close and loving family with their three children, Gene Alan Jr., Sharon and Sandy. The family grew up splitting time between Dallas and managing the Bounds ranch in Wortham. Following the death of her husband Gene in 1972, Miriam remained in the Dallas area and continued to raise her children.

In 1977 she married Finis Edward "Buddy" Brennan. They moved to Kaufman and later moved to the ranch in Wortham. Buddy died in 1990.

In 1993 she married Clyde Lemoine Bounds. They also lived at the ranch in Wortham. Clyde died in 2006.

Miriam was a woman of strength who met all challenges without complaining and relied on a quiet unwavering faith in God. She was made of grit, common sense, kindness and compassion and was an inspiration to many. Miriam was a great cook and shared that with the community through bake sales, cake auctions, and church potluck dinners. As head of the church food committee she was constantly cooking and organizing events to the point you wondered how she had time to run a ranch or cook for her family. After all family meals everyone was always sent home with a "care" package.

Miriam was a leader in her church and a vital part of the United Methodist Women. She was a loyal friend who always had compassion for others and was widely respected. She will be missed by many.

She was dearly loved by and predeceased by:

Husbands; Gene Alan Bounds, Buddy Brennan and Clyde Lemoine Bounds

Siblings; Audrey Jenkins, Abe Jenkins, Marjorie Milazzo Weathersby, Marion "Mike" Jenkins.

Step son; Jack Bounds

Her survivors include; Gene Alan Jr. and his wife Michelle, Sharon Hooks, Sandy Mick and her husband Rick, Darlene Haywood and her husband Mark, Denise Adam, Mike Brennan and his wife Inga, Cherry Kay Wolfe and her husband Mike, and Edward Bounds.

Grandchildren are: Jenie Leigh Edwards Abbotts, Melissa Mick, Jennifer Mick, Jimmy Frideley, Stephanie Haywood, Chelsea Wittenauer and her husband Jeremy, Casey Ragan and his wife Rachel.

Numerous great grandchildren as well.

A private burial will be held at Birdston Cemetery. A memorial service and Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Memorials can be sent to the North Texas Food Bank or First United Methodist Church of Wortham.

Tris Speaker, 70, famed "Gray Eagle" of baseball, Hubbard's most famous son and perhaps the best loved, died of a heart attack at Lake Whitney Monday afternoon as he finished a fishing trip and was preparing to return to his home in Hubbard. He died within a few minutes of being stricken.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 10:30 a.m. from the Wolfe Funeral Chapel in Hubbard with burial in Fairview cemetery. Father Bill Fleener, Episcopal rector of Hubbard, will conduct the services.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cason went to Hubbard Monday night on receipt of the news of Speaker's death.

Cason said the shocked widow told friends that Speaker would be buried in his hometown cemetery where his people had been buried.

Speaker was almost as well known by old-time Corsicana sports followers as in Hubbard, Cleveland, and other points. He was a pitcher with a famous Corsicana semi-pro club of the early days.

Ransom Recommendation
Dude Ransom of Corsicana, a former Texas League player and later head of the Corsicana, professional clubs in the 1920s, recalled Tuesday morning that the late Doak Roberts, who headed the Texas league for a quarter of a century as president owned the Cleburne franchise in 1906 when Ransom was a player. He hired Speaker as a left-handed pitcher on Ransom's recommendation and when his great hitting was fully realized, he was shifted to the outfield where he became the greatest centerfielder and is generally recognized as the greatest defensive center garden patroller in baseball history.

Corsicana
Speaker was a hunting pal of the late C. C. Cunningham of Corsicana and for many years he was a member of the Corsicana Country Club, playing golf here with friends during the off seasons. He was also an avid hunter.

Despite his great baseball career, he spent most of his off-seasons in Hubbard, with frequent trips to hunt and fish, and as soon as the season closed he came "home."

In 1920 after his Cleveland Indians had won the World Series, the famous manage came home as usual and in the spring of 1821, after his club had concluded 's spring training season, he brought the club to Hubbard and staged an exhibition game for his friends and homefolks.

On Champion Teams
Speaker was on three world championship teams, in 1912 and 1915 with the Boston Red Sox, and in 1920 when he managed Cleveland. He was placed in the Baseball's Hall of Fame and a few years ago when the Texas Sports Writers association established the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, Tris Speaker was the fires Texan so honored and received the award at a huge sports event at the Dallas Athletic club.

After leaving Cleveland as manager in 1926, "Spoke" later was with Washington and Philadelphia and then for years was a scout.

Speaker in center field played in "whispering distance" of second base and many time would stage an unassisted double play by catching a "Texas leaguer" at full speed and then heating the runner to second. His dazzling speed and his uncanny judge of a ball from the crack of the bat was one of his characteristics.

Hurt Arm
He started out as a right-handed pitcher, changed to left when the right hand was hurt.

Speaker resigned at Cleveland because he did not want to become a bench manager. His life-time batting average was .344 in 22 seasons.

Reports at Hubbard state that messages are pouring into that city from all walks of life, all over the nation, according to the Associated Press and the United Press International.

Fishing Monday
Speaker and Charlie Vaughn of Hubbard, a life-long friend and former manager of Speaker's ranch northwff Hubbard, had pulled their boat into the dock after an afternoon of fishing on Lake Whitney, according to the Associated Press, when the famous, baseballer collapsed and died. Coronary occlusion was ascribed as the cause of death by Dr. John Lathom of Whitney, the attending physician. Speaker had suffered a previous attack in 1954 and entered a Cleveland hospital for observation last August when he experienced pains in his arms.

Mrs. Speaker was quoted as saying her husband had been feeling well lately, going fishing three or four times a week.

World War I Veteran
Speaker's career was interrupted in World War I when he served with the U. S. Marines.

Surviving are his widow of Hubbard and Cleveland; two sisters, Mrs. Alma Lindsey, Abilene, and Mrs. Pearl Scott, Hubbard, and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Tris was chairman of the Cleveland Boxing Commission for several years and was connected with a steel corporation after his active baseball days were over.

FromFrom near and far, baseball men joined in tribute to the late Tris Speaker today, with Ty Cobb sounding the keynote by saying: "I was fortunate to be in the company of a player of his stature."

Cob was a competitor of Speaker's and after their active days were over, both men were voted into baseball's Hall of Fame.
Praised by Cobb
"It was a shock to learn of his passing" said the Georgia Peach in Glenbrook, Nev. "Our great feeling of friendship toward one another was indicated by our many meetings after our days of competition were over. Whatever rivalry we felt for ceased when we left the playing field."

In 1916, Speaker snapped Cobb's nine-year reign as American League batting champion when he hit .386.

"I don't need to emphasize Speaker's greatness," Cobb added. "His records speak for themselves."

Harry Hooper, who played in the same Red Sox outfield with the "Gray Eagle" for seven seasons, recalled those days when Duffy Lewis was the third member of the trio.

"We were a well-knit, harmonious team, the three of us," Hooper said. "It was just like a family. I was just thinking about Tris the other day. We always exchanged Christmas cards. I can't believe he's gone."

Vice-President George Medlinger of the Indians added, "Tris was a close personal friend and one of the outstanding men in baseball."

Other Comment
Other comment by baseball men:

Commissioner Ford Frick - "The death of Tris Speaker was a great loss - to me personally and to the game of baseball."

Will Harridge, retiring president of the American League - "Tris was a great credit to the American League, to the game of baseball everywhere and a grand person on or off the field."

Warren Giles, National League president - "He talked the game - worked with youngsters - and did a wonderful good-will job as an ambassador for baseball. All will miss him."
