JOSEPH CALVIN MATTHEWS

Joseph Calvin Matthews was born November 4, 1841, the son of
Sampson Steward and Sarah Reece Matthews of Maury Co.
Tennessee. He married November 14, 1861 Margaret Adney
"Maggie" Sims, daughter of Augustus Charles and Evalina Morgan
Sims. Siblings were J Fred Sims, A H Sims, Eva Lois Sims,
Gant Rufus Sims, and Frank T Sims.
Joseph Calvin Matthews enlisted in the CSA Army and served in
Co. D, Walkers Brigade, Longstreets Corps. He was wounded in
the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia, sent home to recuperate from
his wounds, captured at home by the Union Army, and released
due to the severity of his wound.
He
and his family were part of an 1869 Wagon Train that traveled
from Maury Co. Tennessee to Spring Hill, Texas and was listed in
the 1870 there. He purchased two "Farm Lots" on the east side
of Broadway Street at Spring Hill from his uncle, Robert Harve
Matthews and became proprietor of a General Store located on the
west side of Broadway two hundred yards south of the Farm Lots.
The General Store was moved to a new building on Waco Street in
the late 1880s.
His children were John Walter Matthews; Dr. Harvie Lee Matthews,
Charles Stewart Matthews, Lucy Anna Matthews, Willie A Matthews;
Maude Matthews, and Theo Matthews.
He and his wife were staunch Presbyterians. Joseph Calvin
Matthews died May 19, 1914
