Pvt. Virden R. Mattingly
was born in Hillsboro, November 23, 1899, and was educated in the
Corsicana public schools. He enlisted at Chattanooga,
Tennessee, in February, 1917, and was assigned to the Supply
Company, 26th Infantry, 1st Division. Went overseas in
January, 1918, and participated in all the activities of the 1st
Division, the major engagements being the Aisne-Marne, the St Mihiel
and the Meuse-Argonne. Was gassed in the Meuse-Argonne on
October 4, 1918. Was still in the Army of Occupation when this
