Capt. Augustus P. Mays was born in Corsicana
November 22, 1895, and educated in the Corsicana High School and at Gibson, New
York. Entered the service of the U.S. Army on May 12, 1917. Trained at the First Officers' Training Camp at Leon Springs. After receiving
commission as Second Lieutenant was assigned to Company L, 359th Infantry, 90th Division. Went overseas in June, 1918. Participated in the St. Mihiel drive. Was Regimental Gas Officer of the 359th Infantry.
Promoted to First Lieutenant on February 2, 1918. Served in Army of Occupation, but was later transferred to the 146th Infantry, 37th
Division. He returned to the United States with this division and received his discharge on April 5, 1919. His honor is in Corsicana.
