PIONEER TEXAS COUPLE MR. AND MRS. O. M. MELTON To The Farm News: I was born in Sumpter County, Alabama, July 23, 1834; will be 84 my next birthday. My wife, who was Martha A. Lemmon, was born in Polk County, Missouri May 4, 1838 and will be 80 her next birthday. My father, William Melton, came to Navarro County, Texas in 1850. Wife and I were married in
1854. Eleven children were born to us. Nine lived to be grown and eight are living now, four daughters and four sons. The eldest is 63 and the youngest 36. We have twenty-six grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren. I was 26 years old when I enlisted in the war. Was in Company G. Fifteenth Texas Infantry, Speight's Regiment. The hardest fighting we had was at Mansfield and at Jenkins Ferry. I served four years. - O. M. Melton, Route A. Graham, Young Co., TX
Notes: I figure this article was printed about 1918. It was clipped out and placed in an ancient photo album that was passed down from my gg-grandmother. I have no
idea if the Melton's were related to us or probably just family friends, but I knew that this information would be very important to Melton descendants. I hope this helps some of you in your family research! ...Sheri Reeves
