FRANKLIN W. NORTON WAS CONFEDERATE VETERAN; FORMER TAX COLLECTOR
Funeral services for Franklin W. Norton, 89, Confederate Veteran, who
died at the home of his niece, Mrs. J. L. McPherson, 1800 Woodlawn,
Thursday morning at 1 o’clock were held from the McPherson home Thursday
afternoon at 3:30 o’clock with burial in Oakwood Cemetery.
The services were conducted by Rev. John W. Bergin, pastor of the First
Methodist church of which Mr. Norton was a long-time member.
He was prominent in Navarro county and was a school teacher many years.
He also served as tax collector of Navarro county. He had resided in
Corsicana for 50 years.
Mr. Norton was an old-time member of the Men’s Brotherhood Bible Class
of the First Methodist church and was considered the oldest regular
attendance at Sunday school in Corsicana until he became ill several
months ago.
Surviving are a grand-daughter, Mrs. Loyd Chambliss, and a niece, Mrs.
McPherson, both of Corsicana.
Pallbearers were W. M. Huff, Boyce Martin, R. A. Caldwell, A. E. Haslam,
B. A. Jones and W. J. Seelig.
The funeral was directed by the Corley Funeral Home.

NORVELL - Corsicana, Texas, April 16. - James B. Norvell, 61, resident of the Rice community all of his life, died at the home of his brother-in-law and sister, Dr. and Mrs. W. W. Carter, Saturday afternoon. The funeral was held from the Rice Methodist Church Sunday afternoon with burial there, the Rev. W. W. Moss, pastor of the church, officiating. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Carter, Corsicana, and two brothers, T. J. Norvell, Rice, and S. J. Norvell, Harlingen.

Markes Lee Nutt, Route 1, Eureka, died Sunday on his 74th birthday. He
was a native Texan.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday from the family home. The
rites were conducted by Rev. Henry M. Bailey, pastor of the Patterson
Memorial Presbyterian church of Eureka. Burial was in the Eureka Cemetery.

CORSICANA, Texas, Feb. 8 - Phillip O'Conner, 86, retired railroad man, died Monday afternoon. Funeral services will be held at the Catholic Church Wednesday morning. He was a native of Ireland but came to the United States when 14. He was retired from the railroad in 1926. Surviving are five daughters, two sons, fourteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL RITES FOR PHILLIP O’CONNER WEDNESDAY MORNING
Funeral services for Phillip O’Conner, retired railroad man, aged 86
years, who died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Walter Douglas, 1100
West Thirteenth avenue, Monday afternoon at 4:20 o’clock, were held
Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock from the Church of the Immaculate
Conception with burial in the
Catholic cemetery.
The rites were conducted by Monsignor V. Graffeo.
A native of Ireland, Mr. O’Conner came to the United States when 14
years of age. He had resided in Corsicana since 1902. He became
connected with the Cotton Belt Lines in 1890 and was retired in 1926.
Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. L. C. Crutcher, Palestine; Mrs. Annie
Hawkins, Mansfield; Mrs. Thomas Lumpkin, Commerce; Mrs. A. F. Henderson,
Dallas; and Mrs. Douglas, Corsicana; two sons, Mike O’Conner, Tyler; and
George O’Conner, Corsicana; 14 grandchildren.

Reburial Rites Planned Here For S-Sgt. O’Daniel
The body of Staff Sergeant Gorman L. O.Daniel, 26, who was killed in
action in Italy December 12, 1943, will be returned to Corsicana for
burial within the next few weeks, survivors have been informed.
Sergeant O’Daniel was a native of Corsicanan and a graduated from
Corsicana High School. He was with the 36th Division during the war.
Survivors include the parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. G. O’Daniel, 1042 North
Beaton; and three sisters, Mrs. Lee Farris and Mrs. W. T. Hartline, both
of Dallas and Mrs. R. E. Jones of Corsicana.

Funeral services for Frank M. Odom, aged 56 years, who died suddenly at
his residence here 221 West Collin street, Wednesday evening at 9:30
o’clock, were held Friday afternoon at the residence at 2 o’clock.
Interment was made in the Hamilton Cemetery.
He was a native Texan and had resided in Navarro county for thirty
years.
He was born in Walker county. An inquest was conducted over the remains
Wednesday night by Sam B. Jordan, justice of the peace, who returned a
verdict of suicide. The contents of a bottle of chloroform were missing.

Dies Wednesday, Rites Thursday Mrs. J. T. O'Neal, 86, native of
Mississippi, but resident of Navarro county since childhood, died
Wednesday morning following 2 1-2 years illness. Funeral services
will be held Thursday at 2 p. m. from the Corley Chapel with burial
in the Pattison cemetery. The rites will be conducted by Rev. Robert
Wooddy, pastor of the First Baptist church, of which she was a
member. Mrs. O'Neal came to Navarro county with her family when
seven years of age. They traveled in a wagon train and settled in
northwest Navarro county near Emhouse. She had made her home in
Corsicana for the past 10 years. Surviving are two sons, George R.
O'Neal, Fort Stockton, and W. C. (Bud) O'Neal, Corsicana; three
daughters, Mrs. Will Sharpley, Corsicana; Mrs. Archie Tinkle,
Amarillo, and Mrs. Tommie Campbell, Dallas; 17 grandchildren, 28
great-grandchildren; a brother, Judge R. R. Owen, Corsicana, and

J. L. Orange, aged 73 years, native of Kentucky, but resident of Navarro
county for the last twenty-three years, died four miles west of
Corsicana Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock and the funeral services were
conducted Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock at Oakwood Cemetery
where interment was made. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.
Howard Williams, pastor of the First Baptist church.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Walter Frank, Dallas; Mrs. Lizzie
Williamson, Dallas; Mrs. Bessie Bell, Mabank; Mrs. Lottie Highnote,

been at Mexia for the past five years. He was a member of the Mexia
Lions club.

S. G. Ward, Mexia.

CORSICANA NATIVE DIED SATURDAY IN MEXIA
HOSPITAL
Weldon Orrell, 30, Mexia feed store owner and a former resident of
Corsicana, died Saturday morning in a Mexia hospital following a short
illness.
A native of Corsicana, the deceased had resided in this city for
approximately 25 years before moving to Mexia nearly five years ago. He
was a graduate of the Corsicana high school. A member of the Mexia Lions
Club and owner of a large feed store. Mr. Orrell was prominent in
business, social and civic circles there.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock from the
Riddle Chapel at Mexia. Interment will be in the Oakwood
cemetery here with a short service at
the grave, beginning at 4 o’clock.
Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. T. S. Patrick, Corsicana and Mrs. S. G.
Ward, Mexia.
Sutherland-McCammon is in charge of local arrangements.

Mrs. Eddie Myrl Mosley Overby of Dallas died Monday morning at 4 o’clock
at Wichita Falls. The funeral is scheduled to be held from the home of
her mother, Mrs. A. G. Mosley, 605 East Second Avenue, Tuesday afternoon
at 2:30 o’clock with burial in Oakwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Bettie Owens [sic], age 86 years, who died Wednesday at the

by her pastor, Rev.
Roloff of Purdon, Baptist minister. Burial was made in the White

Mrs. C. D. Owen Dies After Illness; Rites Set Sunday
Mrs. Ethel M. Owen, 55, a resident of Dallas for ten years died Saturday at a Dallas hospital after a month's illness.
Mrs. Owen was an employee of Sanger Bros. for ten years and a member of the Brandon Methodist Church. She lived at 2729 Searcy Drive. She was a native of Port Lavaca.
Surviving are her husband, C. D. Owen; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Lynn Merrifield and Miss Susan Owen, both of Dallas; three brothers, Fred L. Montgomery of Morenci, Ariz.; Roark Montgomery of Corsicana and Sam Montgomery of Dallas, and two sisters, Mrs. Geneva Chiappetti of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Miss Linnie Kate Montgomery of Dallas.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Corley Funeral Home in Corsicana with the Rev. Van P. Morrison officiating. Burial will be in Pattison Cemetery at Emhouse, Navarro County.

Funeral Services Held For Accident Victim Services were held Monday at the McKamy-Campbell Funeral Home for Jewell A. (Pat) Owen, who was killed Sunday evening when the car he was driving was struck by the Rock Island Zephyr at the Katy crossing on the First Baptist Church at Ennis officiated and burial was in Laurel Land.
He was discharged from the Army last August and since that time had been an employee of North American Aviation. Survivors include his wife, mother, Mrs. J. T. Owen, Barry, Navarro County; five brothers, T. J. LaFayette Owen Services Monday
Lafayette Owen, 86, native of Navarro county, died in the Henderson
(Texas) Memorial Hospital Saturday night. He had been making his home
with his daughter, Mrs. Joe Cantrell, at Joinerville.
Funeral services were held from the McCammon Chapel Monday at 2 p.m.
Burial was in the Ward Cemetery.
The rites were conducted by Robert Goodman of Henderson, assisted by
Jesse Jenkins of Corsicana, both Church of Christ ministers.
Surviving are three sons, Ruby Owen, Kilgore; M. W. Owen, Houston, and
W. H. Owen, Joinerville; one daughter, Mrs. Cantrell, Joinerville; two
grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Essie Wells, Corsicana, and Mrs. Eva

Owen resided in the Pursley community for many years.

Funeral in Oklahoma For Dallas Resident
Funeral services for Mrs. James E. Pace, 82, of 901 North Bishop, who died Monday morning at her home, will be held at Riverside Cemetery, Mangum, Ok., Wednesday. She was born in 1852 in Hunt County as Clara Terry, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Terry. She was married in 1871 in Hunt County. Mr. and Mrs. Pace then moved to Callahan County, where they engaged in farming and ranching for more than thirty years, going to Mangum, Ok., in 1904. For the last six years she lived in Dallas. The couple's golden wedding was observed in 1921 in Mangum.
Mrs. Pace is survived by two sons, J. C. Pace, Vernon, and M. H. Pace, Mangum; two sisters, Mrs. Serelda Simmons, Bokchito, Ok., and Mrs. J. F. Henslee, Cooper; a brother, J. L. Terry, Moran; nine grandchildren, Mrs. Ed Matheson and James Pace of Vernon; H. R. Stroube, W. C. Captain S. A. Pace Dies At Home In Corsicana
Corsicana, Texas, March 2. - Captain S. A. Pace, 72 years old, an old citizen of Corsicana and prominent in business, civic and social affairs of this city for more than fifty years, died at his home here late Tuesday evening. He was born in Columbus, Ga. In 1848 and spent his boyhood days near Montgomery, Ala. His wife who was Miss Achasa Maddux before her marriage, died twenty years ago. He was at one time an Alderman and later Police Commissioner, when the city form of government changed.
Mr. Pace was a successful business man and at the time of his death was president of the Pace Wholesale Grocery Company. He took active part in all organization work for the upbuilding of Corsicana. He is survived by three children, Mrs. Richard Mays, Miss Louise Pace and Homes E. Pace, all of Corsicana, and a number of grandchildren. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 4:30 from St. John's Episcopal Church, of which he was a member.

S. A. PACE DIED LATE LAST NIGHT
Man Prominent in Affairs of City for Fifty Years Passes Away
Capt. S. A. Pace, aged seventy-two years, pioneer citizen of
Corsicana, who has been prominent in business, civic and social
affairs of this city for more than fifty years, died at his home,
803 West Third avenue Tuesday evening at 6:15 o’clock. He was born
in Columbus, Georgia, September 19, 1948 and spent his boyhood days
near Montgomery, Alabama. Soon after the war he came to Texas and in
1870 was married to Miss Achsah Maddux at the old family home at
Cotton Gin near Fairfield. Captain Pace and his young bride first
located at Waxahachie where he conducted a small retail grocery
business. His place of business was on the same block with that of
the late Rev. Abe Mulkey.
Moved to Corsicana.
With the extension of the Houston and Texas Central Railway he moved
to Corsicana and continued his small retail grocery business, his
store being located on almost the same site on which now stands his
office building, corner of Beaton street and West Sixth avenue. His
activities as a young business man formed an important part of the
history of Corsicana in the making, he having been actively
identified in public life for almost fifty years here.
Served City.
He has always taken an active part in city governmental affairs firs
serving as an alderman, before the commission form of government for
Corsicana was put into effect. With the advent of the commission
form of government Captain Pace served as Police Commissioner and it
was through his untiring efforts while serving the city in this
capacity that an active and successful war on gambling and vice of
all kinds was conducted.
Friend of Young Men.
In the days of the Commercial Club he was a president of this
organization and was chairman of the building committee of the
Carnegie Library. He was a charter member of all organizations which
had as their object the upbuilding of Corsicana and took active part
in all activities, until for the last two or three years, his health
would not permit. He was always a friend to the young man starting
upon a business career and there are any number of successful
business men in Corsicana today as well as in other cities who have
Capt. S. A. Pace to thank for their attainments.
Much Beloved Man.
Honesty, courage, tenderness and gratitude to his friends marked the
chief characteristics of this much beloved man. He was always
appreciative and was courteous to all, through quick and impulsive,
he was always quick to atone for any harsh word which unthinkingly
he might have uttered and his charity reached to the by-ways and
hedges, among all classes. To know him was to be his friend and love
him and it can be truly said that the death of Capt. Pace leaves a
vacancy in the business, social, and religious life of Corsicana
which indeed it will be hard to fill.
An incident illustrating the character of this highly esteemed man
is ably shown in the love and devotion of two old colored servants
who have been in the Pace family for years. This old couple have
been with Captain Pace constantly since his illness, near him at all
times to see that his least want was supplied, and they are heart
broken and unconsolable in his death.
Funeral Thursday.
To the union of S. A. Pace and Achsah Maddux, his wife dying twenty
years ago, was born seven children, two of whom died in infancy, two
Steven Pace and Pauline Pace Womack, dying after reaching manhood
and womanhood, with the following, all of Corsicana, surviving: :
Mrs. Richard Mays, Miss Louise Pace and Homer E. Pace. He is
survived by the following grandchildren; Augustus P. Mays, county
judge; Mrs. Bourke Cartwright of Terrell; Eugene Mays, now attending
school in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; Joe Mays and Louise and Pauline
Womack, who have been making their home with Miss Louise Pace for
sometime; Jack, Steve and Eugene Womack of Mexia and Mary Jean Pace.
The funeral will take place Thursday afternoon at 4:30 o’clock from
St. Johns Episcopal church of which the deceased has been an active
member for a number of years. The services will be conducted by Rev.
H. J. Ellis, Rector of St. Johns, with burial in the Oakwood
cemetery.

Resident Tupelo Community Died At Daughter's Home
Edward Park, aged 73 years, a native of Scotland, but resident of the Tupelo
community, several miles northeast of Corsicana for about 40 years died at
the home of his daughter, Mrs. N. W. Pickering, 1404 West Tenth Avenue on
Monday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock after being in ill health for some time.
The funeral was held Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock at the Edens cemetery
where interment was made. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Louis E. Dugger,
pastor of the Corsicana Cumberland Presbyterian church. Music was furnished
by Mrs. Harry Williams and Mrs. Henry Robbins.
Surviving are three daughter, Mrs. Pickering, Corsicana; Mrs. Lulie
McKenzie, Denvcer Colo., and Mrs. W. O. Maddux, Dallas; and two sons, Dave
Park, Sterling, Colo., and Edwin Park, Corsicana.
The funeral was directed by the Sutherland Funeral Home.

CORSICANA, Texas, Aug. 25. - P. E. Parker, 50, of Muskogee, Okla., died here from injuries received in an automobile collision. His death was the second auto fatality in Navarro County in 1940. The body was sent Sunday to Muskogee for funeral. Surviving are Parker's wife and three sisters.

Mrs Norris was born June 9, 1914, in Navarro County, Texas, the daughter of Wesley Berry Nutt and Bertha (Atchison) Nutt. She married Dale Cecil Norris on Oct 14, 1929, in Corsicana, Texas. She was a member of Victorious Life Church where she was very active in the church work including being a Sunday school teacher. She was a foster parent for man years giving her love and time to 18 children. She had a multitude of friends and was greatly loved by friends and family. She will be greatly missed by all.
She was preceded in death by her husband on May 19, 1973; daughter, Margie Waller; son, David Norris; and nine brothers and sisters.
She is survived by eight daughters, Mary Brown of San Antonio, Lillie Martin and husband, William of Waco, Eva Sparks and husband, Ron of Mansfield, Linda Meyers and husband, Jerry of Hewitt, Nancy Smith and husband, Blair of Arkansas, Nelda Norris of Hewitt, Shirley Hilliard and husband, Larry of Hewitt, Carolyn Hilliard and husband, Bobby of Belton; son, Cecil Ray "Pete" Norris and wife, Gloria of Crawford; sister, Lorene Coone of Waco; daughter-in-law, Wyvonne Norris of Dallas; son-in-law, Jack Waller of Waco; 36 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and great-great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Terry Brown, Robert Roe, Cecil Norris, Jr., Neil Waller, Donald Norris, and Greg Sanders.

 George Perryman Bennett died on July 12, 2006, after a lengthy illness with Parkinson’s disease in Corsicana at Heritage Oaks. George was born May 4, 1910, in Tahoka, the county seat of Lynn County, Texas. He was the youngest boy of eight children born to George Washington Bennett of
Randolph County, Mo., and Mollie Pace of Sivells Bend, Texas. His siblings, Silvia Kemp of California, Bonnie Hammonds of Pauls Valley, Okla., Charles Claude of New Mexico, Grace Bennett of Pauls Valley, Okla., Jim Bennett of Pauls Valley, Okla., and Pauline Williams of Wynnewood, Okla., preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Savannah Georgia Harper, who died on Sept. 6, 2004, in Corsicana; and his daughter, Wanna Sheryl Bennett Peacock, who died in Aug. 13, 1989, in Ellington, Conn.
George is survived by his son, Jack Bennett, a longtime resident of Pauls Valley, Okla.; his granddaughters, Dana Dobbs of Corsicana and her husband Tracy Dobbs, Donna Peacock of Stafford Springs, Conn., and Cindy Christenson of Juno Beach, Fla., and her husband Eric Christenson; great-grandson, Shawn Rogers of Tyler and his wife Shawn Hickman; great-granddaughter, Jodie White of Lorena and her husband Mark White; great-great-grandchildren, KayCee Lynn Rogers, Danielle Rogers of Waco, Luke and Lane White of Waco, and Grace Hickman of Tyler. He is also survived by his nephew, Steven Williams of Hennepin, Okla.; nephew, Jim Ward of Fresno, Calif.; niece, Jimmy Ellen Gardner of Elmore City Okla.; and niece Betty Ruth Dockray of Denison.
George lived a long and interesting life. It began in Atoka, Texas, where his family were farmers. Later when the Bureau of Land Management opened up land to homestead his father and other family member moved Mountain Aire, N.M. He was just 8 at that time and told family tales of his father hunting and learning to survive in the hardy New Mexico country. His favorite story was of being saved by an old white mule his brother Charles Claude had trained right before going to Germany in World War I. He said he was lost in a snowstorm and was running in the opposite direction of his home when he heard the old white mule braying, and he followed its voice home. He credits the old mule with saving his life. George remembers the early days of living in the Pauls Valley, Okla., area and going to school at White Bead. He married Savannah in Wynnewood, Okla., Dec. 11, 1932. He and his family were staunch members of the Church of Christ beginning back in Casey County, Ky., in the early 1800s. The family then moved to Randolph, Mo., where they helped to build the first Church of Christ in their community. They later came to Texas in the mid-1800s and moved to Oklahoma after War World I. George and his wife Savannah were members of the Church of Christ in Wynnewood, Pauls Valley and Maysville.
George first began his career driving an ice wagon up and down the streets of Wynnewood, Okla.; he farmed cotton, corn and grain sorghum. He was a believer in education and went to business college for 13
months. In 1933 he was hired for his first office job as a crop insurance clerk for the Garvin County AAA office for $4 per day. He later began a 30-year career with United States Government as an agricultural stabilization and conservation officer. He moved to various locations until he retired in Ottawa County, Okla., and he and Savannah then moved back to the Pauls Valley, Wynnewood, and Maysville area. In September 1999, when due to ill health, they moved to Texas to be closer to the Dallas area medical facilities and their grandchildren. George is remembered by his family as a kind man who gave of himself to the community. He was a member of the Kiwanis, the Federal Retirees Union and was an involved in church activities. He delivered Meals on Wheels to the elderly until he was 87, and it was a family joke that no one could convince him he was elderly.
He enjoyed family history, and genealogy, and is part of the Family Tree and National Geographic DNA project. He firmly believed in being young of heart and once expressed “you don’t get older you only get slower.” He deeply loved his wife Savannah and his son Jack and daughter Sheryl. When his wife died shortly after their 72nd anniversary he was unable to attend her funeral because of his Parkinson’s disease, however he helped to arrange what was spoken and sung at her service. He wanted the message to be passed on at her funeral for their family and friends to know that she was a good woman. That was George Bennett loving his family and thinking of others. He liked everyone he met and always had a smile and kind word for others. Although his disease was lengthy and sometimes painful he never complained. He was amazing in his grace during his illness. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends as he brought joy and smiles to everyone he knew.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at Wooster Funeral Home, 1601 S. Chickasaw, Pauls Valley, Okla. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wooster Funeral Home Chapel with Roy Shave officiating. Interment will be in the Wynnewood Oaklawn Cemetery.

George H. Williams - 1915-2006, HAC donor and supporter
George H. Williams, Jr., namesake of the world class George H. Williams World War I Aviation Collection at The University of Texas at Dallas, died Sunday, July 9, 2006 at his home in Dallas. His World War I research evolved into a passion and he assembled a considerable amount of material that became the cornerstone of UTD's World War I Collection. It has been praised by the Smithsonian Institution and The History Channel and used by researchers worldwide.
"George Williams was instrumental in making our History of Aviation Collection the premier place to study World War I aviation," said Erik D. Carlson, Ph.D., coordinator of the Special Collections Department. "His dedication and effort had a tremendous impact on this archive that will last for many decades."
Williams not only donated materials to the collection but he became one of the first volunteers to process McDermott Library's aviation holdings. He was chairman of the Advisory Board for the entire History of Aviation Collection. He served in that role at McDermott Library for 20 years. His dedication to the World War I collection was pivotal in UTD's acquisition of the remarkable A.E. Ferko collection of rare German aviation photographs. The collection includes squadron lists and combat reports.
According to Larry Sall, Dean of Libraries at UTD, Williams was primarily responsible for making "our World War I aviation material one of the best collections of its type in the world." Sall, who administered the aviation collection for 20 years, also worked closely with Mr. Williams in organizing and enlarging the collection. That was made easier thanks to Mr. Williams' extensive connections with collectors and scholars who trusted and admired his dedication.
Williams was born April 7, 1915 in Frost, Texas and grew up in Waco, Texas. He served with the U.S. Army in World War II and saw action with Gen. Patton's Third Army in relief of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge and was at Remagen the day the famous bridge over the Rhine was captured by the Americans.

George H. Williams Jr. was a Dallas insurance
company executive whose lifelong passion for
World War I aviation lifted him to international
prominence.
The research he started as a Waco child grew to
be the cornerstone of the George H. Williams
World War I Aviation Collection at the
University of Texas at Dallas.
Mr. Williams also was an early volunteer and
adviser for the organization of the UTD aviation
collection at the school's McDermott Library.
Mr. Williams, 91, died Sunday of natural causes
at his Dallas home.
A memorial will be at 2 p.m. today at St. Luke's
Episcopal Church, where he was an active member.
Much of Mr. Williams' reputation grew out of
work he did after retiring in the early 1980s.
His efforts included organizing and serving as
president of the League of World War I Aviation
Historians and starting the group's journal,
Over the Front.
In 1988, he organized a seminar at UTD that
brought together 125 aviation scholars and the
last three surviving American WWI flying aces.
"There is something about the romance of flying
in these machines that were barely held together
that just fascinated him," said his son, Scott
Williams of Arlington.
The elder Mr. Williams was born April 17, 1915,
in
Frost, Texas . He spent his
childhood in Waco watching and trying to catch
rides with barnstorming pilots.
"He saw technology change a lot," his son said.
"To look up in the sky and see flying machines.
When he was a kid, that was new."
Mr. Williams received a bachelor's degree from
Baylor University in 1939.
He started his professional career in Houston
but enlisted in the Army Air Corps after Pearl
Harbor was attacked.
In the Army, he traded his chance to become a
pilot for a seat in officer training school,
where he studied radio and electronics at
Harvard University. He was then reassigned to
the 94th Signal Battalion.
In late 1944, Mr. Williams was part of Gen.
George S. Patton's Third Army's drive to relieve
American troops surrounded in Bastogne, Belgium.
"When they went to Bastogne, his people were
right out in front trying to find the way in the
ice and the snow," said Dr. Larry Sall, UTD's
dean of libraries. "Patton would drive up in his
Jeep and chew them out for not going fast
enough."
Mr. Williams remained active with the Army
Reserve through the early 1950s.
Back in civilian life, he became an executive
with the mortgage division at Equitable Life
Insurance Co. in Dallas.
Mr. Williams' collection included books and
documents he either obtained or copied from
other archives, Dr. Sall said. He corresponded
with people around the world who sought his
expertise.
Mr. Williams connections helped the UTD library
obtain collections on Italian and French
aviation, as well as the A.E. Ferko collection,
which contains German aviation photographs,
squadron lists and combat reports, Dr. Sall
said.
"That big German collection ... we wouldn't have
gotten it without him," Dr. Sall said. "It
really put us on the map."
In addition to his son, Mr. Williams is survived
by his wife, Ginny Williams of Dallas; a
daughter, Kaye Peterson of Richardson; a sister,
Emily Tooker of Waco; a brother, Ralph Williams
of Dallas; six grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.

In Memoriam.....Fannie M. (McAfee) DOUGLAS.
Twenty-nine years ago, there came to Corsicana, a family of Missourians named McAFEE. They had lived a short time in Ellis, then in Dallas County, and now came to make Corsicana their home. The family consisted of five persons--the husband, D. M. [Douglas McMurray McAFEE], the wife Mrs. Lucy E., and the three children, Fannie, Charley and Allie.
Soon after their arrival they reported for duty at the Methodist Church, handing in their certificates. Fannie had been but recently converted and had joined the Church at Whiterock Camp-grounds in Dallas County. She was born in Shelby County, Missouri September 6, 1857 and at the time she joined the Corsicana Church, she was about 13 years old. Here she grew to womanhood and on September 5, 1876 she was happily married
to James H. DOUGLAS. She was then exactly 19 years old.
On the 26th of January, 1901 she passed away from earth. The following day one of the largest funeral processions ever seen in Corsicana, followed the casket to its resting place. Her husband and twelve children survive her. One, only a week old. Seven of these children are boys, five, girls. All except the two youngest have been received into the Church. These simple statements tell much, but they do not complete the story.
Those who visited her home and found it a model of neatness and order and her children models of politeness and proprietary said; "What a mother she must be."
When every Sunday morning, her husband was seen promptly at the opening of the Sunday School, with the children who were old enough, well dressed, well behaved, and lessons all learned, many said; "How can Fannie DOUGLAS accomplish so much?" When the hour of public worship came, and she walked up the aisle and took the seat beside the group, looking cheerful and happy, (no artificial smiles) involuntarily we said; "Fannie DOUGLAS is a great woman."
Now that she has passed through the gates of immortality, our hearts believe that among the sacramental hosts in heaven, there are none holier or happier than she. The motherless ones, and the husband and father, almost comfortless, linger here; but here, with an everlasting band of kindred saints at God's right hand, the noble wife, the godly Mother, the saintly Christian, rests. She belonged to no clubs. She wrote no books, but she has left volumes of heart-written literature, which, like the epistles of the beloved Disciple, are an everlasting repetition of the new Commandment, Love.

Rice Texas. The body of Louis Neal, 22 years old, residing near Rice, was found badly cut up by a Houston and Texas Central northbound freight train at Carl Switch, four miles north of here last night. From evidence obtainable, it is the general opinion that he was robbed and probably killed, then put on the railroad track to hide the crime.

Last week the Herald contained a short account of the killing of Louis Neal of Hog Fork, Henderson County, and the arrest of four of his farmer neighbors.
This week, an unconfirmed rumor has reached Kaufman from Hog Fork that one of the men, Clem Fowler, has made a confession stating that he, Bailey Ivey and Louis Robertson held Neal while Alex Martin beat him over the head with a piece of iron, and that Neal begged so piteously for mercy that they all turned him loose and then Martin shot him to death. In this confession, Fowler said that Neal's appeals for mercy was so pitiful that he had to stop up his ears. Neal and Martin's daughter were sweethearts and desired to marry. Martin objected and his daughter made two attempts to elope with Neal and for this, he was murdered."

Funeral services for Everett Eugene Hobbs, 74 of Rice, retired farmer who died in an Ennis hospital, were held from the Rice Methodist Church. Burial was in the Rice Cemetery.

E. E. Hobbs Rites Held Thursday
Everett Eugen Hobbs, 74, retired Rice farmer, died in the Ennis
Municipal Hospital Wednesday afternoon following a long illness.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Thursday from the Methodist church
at Rice. Burial was in the Rice Cemetery.
The rites were conducted by Rev. Jack Bell, Rice Baptist minister, and
Rev. M. C. Bledsoe, pastor of Central Methodist church in Corsicana.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ettie Hobbs, Rice; two sons, Russell Hobbs,
Ennis; and Everett Cleo Hobbs, Waxahachie; two daughters, Mrs. L. C.
Jones of Fort Worth, and Mrs. L. S. Ballard, Jr., Dallas; five
grandchildren, a brother, W. E. Hobbs, Raymondville; four sisters, Mrs.
T. W. Neal, Fort Worth; Mrs. Homer Cassels, Rice; Mrs. Manco Cassels,
Ferris, and Mrs. M. E. Medford, Wichita Falls, and other relatives.
