Robert Lee Ellis Jr., 64, of Corsicana passed away Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2006, at Navarro Regional Hospital.
Wake service will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today at M.R. Smith Parlor for Funerals.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, at Woodland Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be friends of the family.
Mr. Ellis was born Oct. 3, 1941, in Corsicana.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Wynette Ellis; his soul mate, Ollie Faye Ellis; sister-in-law, Pinkie Jean Burke; and mother-in-law, I.D. Love.
He leaves to cherish his memories: his father, Robert Lee Ellis Sr.; brother, Julius Smith; children, Arthur L. Newsome (Gwen) and Linda A. Brown (Willie); grandchildren, Anthony D. Newsome (Kathy), Brenda J. Newsome (Fred), Patricia A. Daniels (Stanford), Steven Newsome (and wife), Arthur J. Newsome (Billy Jean), and Martes Martin (Larasha); 14 great-grandchildren; a dear and faithful aunt, Ruby Collins; a special friend, Mary Bell; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Burial will be in Steen Cemetery, Malakoff, under the direction of M.R. Smith Parlor for Funerals, Corsicana.
Mr. Williams died Aug 5, 2006, at Lake Gladewater.
He was born June 25, 1968, in Corsicana, where he grew up and attended public schools. He moved to Longview about three monthjs ago. He was preceded in death by his father, Larry D. Williams, Sr.
Survivors include his wife, Ella Hamilton Williams, Longview; son, Larry D. Williams III, Corsicana; daughters, Tiesha Nola and Sholanda Hamilton MBart; mother, Floyda Robinson Williams, Corsicana; brother, Steven Williams, Athens; sisters, Linda Caldwell, Waterloo, Iowa, Selma Pereia, Arlington, and Rebeca, Norfolk, Va.; and three grandchildren.

Mr. John G. Patrick, 78, of Corsicana passed away on Wednesday, August 16, 2006 in Corsicana. He was born on December 7, 1927 in Purdon, Texas. He worked as a laborer in the Farm Equipment manufacturing industry.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 17, 2006 at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m on Friday, August 18, 2006 at the Corley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ruthie Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in the Younger Cemetery in Silver City, Texas.

Edna Earl Hargrove Montgomery

Edna Earl Hargrove Montgomery, 81, of Brushie Prairie, entered into rest with her Savior. She was in the Ennis Care Center due to Alzheimer’s. She passed away Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2006, in Ennis.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home.
Services will be 9 a.m. Saturday at Navarro Mills Baptist Church with Brother Bob Reid officiating. Interment will follow at Dresden Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be nephews James Montgomery, Leon Montgomery, Tony Hargrove, Alan Hargrove, Ricky Montgomery and Sammy Montgomery. Honorary pallbearers will be great-grandsons Robert Schulze and John Landon Freeman.
Edna was born March 15, 1925, in Brushie Prairie. She had such a love of life and loved people to the fullest. She was always smiling and laughing and would sing and yodel, especially when she thought no one was listening. Her favorite hobby was quilting. Her quilts were treasured by everyone who was gifted to receive one of them. Her most requested quilts were the “birth announcements.” These were special baby quilts with the newborns’ vital statistics, and each and every one was hand stitched, designed and personalized for the baby. She also would crochet and made numerous beautiful items for loved ones. Whenever you happened to stop by to see her, she usually would be sitting at her quilting frame stitching and singing while doing a labor of love. She was a longtime member of Navarro Mills Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Maudie Lee Hargrove Gunn and James F. Hargrove; sister, Tressie Montgomery; brothers, Glen Hargrove and Bud Hargrove; grandson, Jimmy Blissett; and great-grandson, Stayton Hammack.
Survivors include her husband of 45 years, John K. Montgomery of Brushie Prairie; sons and daughters-in-law, Eddie and Linda Trompler of Frost and Larry and Yvonne Trompler of Victoria; stepdaughters, Patsy Blissett of Carthage and Clare Hollingsworth and husband Bill of Midlothian; brother and sister-in-law, Billy and Shirley Hargrove of Frost; sister-in-law, Mildred Hargrove of Frost; 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Gloria Zoch, resident of Corsicana, Texas, passed away Tuesday morning, August 8, 2006 at the age of 68 years at her residence. She was born in Grapeland, Texas on March 17, 1938 to George Kelley and Ellen Thornton Kelley. She loved to work outside in her yard with the flowers and with her garden.
Mrs. Zoch was preceded in death by her three children: Sandra Dee Zoch, Kenneth Zoch, and Michael Zoch.
Survivors include her husband Otto Zoch of Corsicana. Sons: Terry Wayne Zoch and Douglas Glen Zoch both of Corsicana. Daughter: Billie Jean Millen of Santa Fe, Texas. Step-daughter: Jannia Grenier of Moses Lake, Washington. Twelve grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. One brother and six sisters.
Graveside services will be held Friday morning, August 11, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at Davis Cemetery in Grapeland, Texas. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home.

Dr. William F. AMMONS, Jr. William "Bill" Ammons, Jr., D.D.S., M.S.D. Born June 11, 1932, in Corsicana, Texas, Dr. Bill Ammons passed away on August 14, 2006, in Seattle with his loving family by his side. He graduated from Texas Christian University in 1955, served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and returned to graduate from the University of Texas Dental School in 1959. Dr. Ammons continued his graduate training at the University of Washington Dental School and graduated in 1970 with his MSD and Certificate in Periodontics. Dr. Ammons went on to teach in the Department of Periodontics at the University of Washington and lectured internationally. He retired in 1995 as a Professor Emeritus. Dr. Ammons maintained a private practice and taught on a part-time basis until his passing. He was active in numerous professional organizations, and was a Master Mason in Good Standing of the Free and Accepted Masons of Odessa, Texas. Bill was blessed with an abundant and active life. He was a founding partner of the Silverlake Winery. Bill enjoyed fishing, gardening, reading, history and travel. Most of all, he loved spending time with his students, close friends and family telling tall tales. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William and Aline Ammons, his brother, Charles Ammons, and his sister, Mary Lynn Morris. Bill is survived by his wife of 52 years, Janet. He also leaves behind four children: daughter, Lynn (Jim) Clendenen of Snohomish; daughter, Stacey (Bill) Kuhn of Mountlake Terrace; son, William (Diane) Ammons of Everett; and daughter, Ruth Ammons of Olympia. Bill also leaves behind eight grandchildren: Jim, Josh, Erin, Jana, Tyler, Devlyn, Preston and Desiree; and three great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Bill's Life will be held on Thursday, August 31st at the University of Washington. William Thomas Dennehy

William Thomas Dennehy passed away peacefully in Greeley, Colo., on Sunday, Aug. 20, 2006. He was born Jan. 19, 1919.
He was preceded in death by his dear wife Elizabeth in 1998 and also by his brothers Lawrence, Martin, Edward, Silvester and his sister Helen (Hogan).
He is survived by his daughters Caroline Ann Dennehy and Debra Lynn Swain, sisters Mary Margaret Richardson, Polly Corley, Dorothy Hogan and Elizabeth’s family, Elaine Labban, George Labban, Tressa Watkins and many nieces and nephews. Bill was a devoted member of the Catholic church and participated in the Knights of Columbus for many years. We will greatly miss his kind spirit and quiet sense of humor.
A rosary will be held for Bill from 7 to 7:30 p.m. today at visitation from 7 to 8 p.m. at Corley Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Corsicana. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be members of the Knights of Columbus.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Bill’s name to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 3000 W. State Highway 22, Corsicana, TX 75110.

Mr. William Thomas Dennehy passed away peacefully in Greeley, Colorado. Predeceased by his dear wife Elisabeth in 1998 and his brothers Lawrence, Martin, Edward, Silvester, and his sister Helen (Hogan). Survived by his daughters Caroline Ann Dennhey and Debra Lynn Swain, sisters May Margaret Richardson, Polly Corley, Dorothy Hogan and Elizabeth’s family; Elaine Labban, George Labban, Tress Watkins, and many nieces and nephews. Bill was a devoted member of the Catholic Church and participated in the Knights of Columbus for many years. We will greatly miss his kind spirit and quiet sense of humor.

Tribute: William Dennehy was born in Forney, Texas, to Edward Francis and Nora Catherine (Mahgan) Dennehy. He married Elizabeth Labban.
Mr. Dennehy moved to Greeley in 2001 from Corsicana, Texas, where he had lived for more than 50 years. He was a master sergeant in the Army. He also was a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the St. Mary Catholic Church in Greeley.
Mr. Dennehy died Sunday in at North Colorado Medical Center, Greeley.
Survivors: Two daughters, Dr. Carolyn A. "Cad" Dennehy of Greeley and Debra L. Swain of Canada; three sisters, Mary Margaret Richardson, Dorothy Hogan and Polly Covley.
Preceded in death by: A sister Helen Hogan and four brothers, Lawrence Dennehy, Edward Dennehy, Martin Dennehy and Sylvester Dennehy.
Services: No local services. Services will be in Corsicana.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Paschal Funeral Chapel with Shannon Trent officiating. Interment will follow at Kerens Cemetery.

Mr. Trent was born May 15, 1917, in the Rural Shade community near Kerens. He was a World War II veteran having served in the U.S. Navy.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Trent; son, Kenneth Ray Trent; grandson, James Ray Trent; parents, H.H. and Emma Trent; and brothers, Palmer Trent, Lazy Trent, Nelson Trent and Hubert Trent.

Porfirio Mendoza, 37, of Corsicana passed away Monday, Aug. 21, 2006 in Colton, Calif.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father Danilo Ramos officiating. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Ramon Mendoza, Jr, Noe Mendoza, Juan Mendoza, Gary Mendoza, Ramon Mendoza and Santiago Navarrete.

Mr. Mendoza was born Sept. 11, 1968 in Mexico. He was a beloved son, husband, father, brother and friend who never said no to anything. His love and caring nature touched so many hearts and lives. He was a man of many trades, so he was sought for help many times. With a mischievous smile on his face, he was always there ready and willing to help. He will be missed by many and loved by all.

He was preceded in death by grandfathers Federiro Santuario and Porfirio Mendoza; and grandmothers Maria DeJesus Sanchez and Francisca Herrera.

Survivors include his wife, Maria; daughter, Meagan; mother, Maria Puente; father, Ramon Mendoza, Sr; sisters, Maria Pullin and Maria Molina; brothers Ramon, Jr, Noe, Juan, and Gary, all of Corsicana; several aunts and uncles; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Randall Eugene Prince, 45, of Duncanville passed away on Saturday, August 19, 2006 in Dallas, Texas. He was born on January 9, 1961 in Corsicana, Texas.
He worked as a salesman in the petroleum industry for a number of years. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

He graduated from Corsicana High School in 1970 and Navarro College in 1972 with an Associate Degree in Business. He worked in retail management with K. Wolens and Levine's Department Stores and owned various businesses in the Dallas area. Ronnie loved his children and family and always put their needs first. He loved Putt-Putt golf and developed many life long friendships across the state.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 25, 2006 at the funeral home. Funeral servces will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. August 26, 2006 at the Corley Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Charles Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in the Hamilton-Beeman cemetery. Jesse Edward (Eddie) Knott went to be with his maker after a long illness. Eddie was preceded in death by his mother Othela Knott of Rice, his brother Elvis Musick of New Mexico and his wife of 33 years, Shirley Knott.

He is survived by his father Jesse Knott of Corsicana; brother Kenneth Knott and wife Polly of Corsicana; daughter and son-in-law Kathy and Billy York of Corsicana; son Rickey Knott of Corsicana; son and daughter-in-law Mark and Teresa Knott of Corsicana; grandchildren Kevin Ovalle, Mariea Ovalle and Stephanie Ovalle of Corsicana, Monica Bland of Beaumont, Ashley Wilhelm of Corsicana, Meghan Knott of Corsicana and Marc Knott of Corsicana; 10 great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Knott worked for many years in the oil fields before he fell ill.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Kenneth "Blackie" Tyler, resident of Corsicana, Texas, passed away Thursday, August 24, 2006 in Ennis, Texas at the age of 73. He was born in Alexandria, Louisiana on September 22, 1933 to Dennis and Ketha Tyler.

He was preceded in death by his parents Dennis and Ketha Tyler and brothers Lehman Tyler and Mack Tyler.

He had amany joys in his life, one of which was his family. He wenjoyed following his children, and watching his grandchildren. Another love in his life was fishing and hunting, most recently fishing for Sand Bass.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years Madelyn Tyler of Corsicana, Texas. His children: Kenneth Tyler and his wife Jennifer of Yoakum, Matt Tyler and his wife Staci of Lipan, and Brenda Barnes and her husband Mark of Corsicana. Grandsons: Tres Tyler, Luke Tyler, and Will Tyler all of Yoakum. Granddaughters: Mattye TYler and Torrye Tyler of Lipan. Brothers: Volly Tyler of Waller, Chilton Tyler and D.M. Tyler of Canyon, Mike Tyler of Houston, and Donnie Tyler. Sisters: Edith Gundy of Rosharon, Ketha Selby of Rosharon, and Lois White of Millican. Sister-in-law Marcella and her husband Wesley Nelson of Bellville.

Charley Beauchamp

Charley Beauchamp Killed
Last Monday, in Navarro Co. on his father's farm, Charley, the son of Joe Beauchamp, was killed. He and another boy were hauling stock feed when the load fell off and Charley went under the wheels which passed over him killing him instantly. The body was brought to Ennis Tuesday and buried in Myrtle cemetery. Charley was about 12 years old.

Linda Martin

Our family sadly announces the passing of Linda Martin. A wonderful mother, sister, aunt and friend. Linda passed away Aug. 27, 2006, after fighting a courageous battle with lung cancer.

She was preceded in death by parents Robert and Erna Jennings.

She is survived by daughter Kimberly McNeill and fiancé Jeff Garrett of McKinney; son Mark McNeill, wife Meredith Collin, and Jonathan of Wylie; sisters and brothers-in-law Kay and Buddy Smith of Corsicana, Ricky and Robbie Jennings of Corsicana, Carol Kittley of Red Oak, Mike and Susan Jennings of Eureka and Lois Moore of Lewisville; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Judi “Nana” Burnett, born in Houston on Jan. 4, 1945, peacefully passed away at home Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2006. She went to her Heavenly Father surrounded by her family after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Judi is survived by her best friend, soul mate, and husband of 43 years, Johnny Burnett; her son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Barbara Burnett of Goodyear, Ariz.; daughter and son-in-law, Michell and Brian Tibbits of Corsicana; grandchildren, Kati Tibbits of Corsicana, Ryan, Nathan and Rachel Burnett of Goodyear, Ariz.; sister and brother-in-law, David and Janet Pelc of Pearland; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Reeves and Inez Burnett of Fairfield; and numerous other loving family members and friends. Judi owned Missy’s Little People Shoppe in Corsicana where she received great joy from being surrounded each day by children. She treasured the friendships she made with her customers and other downtown business owners.

Carvel Neal Jenkins of Lucas, left his earthly home on Aug. 29, 2006. Carvel was born in Corsicana, where he lived until 2001, moving to Garland, to be near his daughter Carla Miller, RN, CCM, later moving to Lucas. Carvel was employed with Bethlehem Steel Corps as a metallurgical chemist for many years. Mr. Jenkins is survived by his daughter Carla Miller; best friend, Elaine Jenkins of Plano; and two nieces, Mrs. Kathy Stroube (H.R. 111) of Houston and Norma Jean Risinger of Pasadena. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, James and Clara Jenkins of Corsicana; two sisters, Katherine Brown and Eloise Jenkins of Corsicana; one brother, James Jenkins of Pasadena. Mr. Jenkins was a member of the Buckingham Road Church of Christ in Garland.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Restland Funeral Home in Dallas. Services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Wildwood Chapel of Restland with Minister Richard Blaisdell of Buckingham Road Church of Christ officiating. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arvernon Purdy; and parents, Jewel Burrell and Jimmie Whitfield.

Rose was born Aug. 25, 1940 in Gary, Ind. She was married to her loving husband Ken on Jan. 27, 1962. They moved to Texas in 1980 where she went to work for Menasco Aerospace in Euless. They moved to Corsicana in 1995 where she worked at Cason’s Flowers until she retired in 2004.

Member of Texas Business Hall of Fame, L. William (Bill) McNutt, Jr., who built Collin Street Bakery from a small town Texas company into an internationally recognized institution, died on Sept. 1, 2006.

Bill died peacefully at his home in Corsicana after a battle with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Born on June 16, 1925 in Corsicana, the only child of Lee William McNutt and Anna Mae Rutherford McNutt. He graduated from Corsicana High School in 1942. The family moved to Nashville, Tenn. following graduation. In 1943, he attended Montgomery Bell Academy Prep School in Nashville. He was a member of the football team that shared the Mid South Conference football title.

Bill entered Vanderbilt University in the fall of 1943. He was a started at linebacker and center on Vanderbilt’s last undefeated football team in 1943.

His college experience was interrupted in February of 1944 by service in the Army during World War II. After basic training, he guarded Rommell’s Africa Corp as a POW camp staff sergeant. He finished the war at Fort Dix, N.J., where he mustered out soldiers returning from Europe.

Returning to Vanderbilt in the summer of 1946, he was elected President of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

He graduated from Vanderbilt, June 5, 1949, and went to work the next day for his father and uncle, Bob Rutherford at the Dr Pepper Bottling Company of Nashville. During his nine years, with the company, he became President and owner. He was elected President of the Tennessee Association of Bottlers in 1956.

Bill met his wife, Josephine Williams Pritchett, a native of Nashville. They were married in 1954.

In the winter of 1958 he was asked by his uncle, Bob Rutherford, to move back to Corsicana and help build Collin Street Bakery. The bakery, founded in 1896, was purchased in November of 1946 by Bill’s father, Lee McNutt, Harry Cook, Jack Roberts Sr., Harry Montgomery, and Bob Rutherford.

In 1967 Bill purchased his Uncle Bob Rutherford’s interest in the bakery and served as President until 1998, when his son, Bob McNutt, became President.

Under his leadership, Collin Street became one of the largest food-by-mail companies in the world. A pioneer in international direct marketing, the bakery served customers in more than 190 countries. In 1982, the United States Department of Commerce presented the bakery with E Award for Excellence in Exporting.

During his time as President, the company received numerous awards including: three Gold medals given by the Monde Selection of Geneva, Switzerland for its DeLuxe Fruitcake, The New York Gourmet Society recognized the bakery for excellence, in 1996, the Institute for Family Business at Baylor University named the bakery the Outstanding Family Business of the Year.

Other business accomplishments include: Co-Founder of Navarro Pecan Company, Co-Founder Data Dallas and Finca Corsicana Pineapple Plantation, Costa Rica, the largest organic pineapple plantation in the world.

In 1967, Lamar Hunt, founder of the American Football League, asked McNutt to be his business partner in bringing the sport of professional soccer to America as a founding team owner of the North American Soccer League. His soccer involvement included: President and Co-Owner, Dallas Tornado Soccer Club, 1967-1980, Co-Owner and Director Tampa Bay Rowdies Soccer Club, 1980-1982 and elected to the North Texas Soccer Hall of Fame, 1977.

Civic Organizations: Elected to the Corsicana City Commission, 1961-1963, President, Corsicana YMCA, President, Southern Methodist University Dad’s Club, 1978, a founding Director, Zale Lipshy Hospital at UT Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, Texas, Director, Main Bank, Red Oak, Texas, and First Republic Bank of Corsicana.

In 1985, President Ronald Reagan appointed him to a three-year term on the U. S. State Department Board for International Food and Agriculture Development.

At the time of his death, Bill was a member of the First Baptist Church in Corsicana, Texas, Director of Navarro Pecan Shelling Co., National Soccer Hall of Fame, Cross Creek Aviation Corp., Director and Chairman of the Board, Collin Street Bakery.

Club memberships include Petroleum Club and Tower Clubs, Dallas, TX, Ocean Reef Club, Key Largo, FL, Garden of the Gods Club, Colorado Springs, CO, and Corsicana Country Club.

Bill is survived by his wife of 52 years, Josephine Pritchett McNutt, four children, Lee William (Bill) McNutt, III and his wife, Susana, of Dallas; Robert (Bob) Pritchett McNutt of Corsicana and daughters, Katherine Ann McNutt and Melanie Jeanne McNutt of Dallas, two grandchildren, Lee William (Will) McNutt IV and Thomas Max Nygaard McNutt of Dallas.

CORSICANA, Texas -- L. William "Bill" McNutt Jr., who transformed Collin Street Bakery into a global business during more than 30 years as the company president, died Friday, according to the Corley Funeral Home in Corsicana. He was 81.

McNutt died of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma at his Corsicana home.

During his time at Collin Street Bakery, which is famous for its fruitcakes, it became one of the largest food-by-mail companies in the world. Global marketing eventually accounted for 25 percent of the company's fruitcake customers.

McNutt was born in Corsicana, where he graduated from high school in 1942. He graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1949 after a stint in the Army then joined the family's Dr Pepper Bottling Co. in Nashville, Tenn., eventually becoming president and owner.

In 1958, McNutt returned to Corsicana to help build the hometown bakery business, which his father and uncle had purchased with three others in 1946. The bakery was founded in 1896.

McNutt expanded the bakery's customer base through mail-order techniques such as computerized mailing lists, and it eventually reached 190 countries.

McNutt also co-founded Navarro Pecan Co. and Finca Corsicana, a pineapple farm in Costa Rica. He was president and co-owner of the Dallas Tornado Soccer Club from 1967 to 1980.

L. William “Bill” McNutt Jr., who turned his family’s bakery in Corsicana, Texas, into a specialized mail-order business that ships holiday fruitcakes around the world, has died. He was 81.

McNutt, who was president of Collin Street Bakery from 1967 to 1998, died Sept. 1 of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma at his Corsicana home, said his son Bob McNutt.

The bakery, which opened in 1896, got a jolt when McNutt arrived in 1958 and shifted its focus to mail-order sales. He introduced computerized mailing lists, direct consumer marketing and efficient shipping methods to eventually extend the firm’s reach to 196 countries.

The company annually sells about 3 million pounds of fruitcake, or about 1.5 million cakes. Fruitcake accounts for 98 percent of the bakery’s total sales. And nearly all of those sales are by mail order, primarily from October to December, when each cake is packaged in a red Christmas tin decorated with a cowboy and his lasso.

“We breathe, eat and sleep our cake,” John Crawford, part-owner and vice president, told the Los Angeles Times. “We have a good time here.”

Corsicana was a thriving oil boomtown on a railroad line 50 miles south of Dallas when German immigrant Gus Weidmann set up shop 110 years ago in the Collin Street Bakery.

It was on the ground floor of his partner Tom McElwee’s luxurious hotel, where celebrities including Enrico Caruso and Will Rogers stayed. Members of the Ringling Bros. circus would leave with dozens of Weidmann’s cakes to give as gifts while on tour, and to this day descendants of the Ringling family place annual orders.

McNutt’s father, Lee William McNutt, and uncle Bob Rutherford bought the bakery in 1946. The McNutt partnership has owned the privately held company and maintained the basic recipes ever since.

In the 1950s, Collin Street was essentially a regional bread bakery, but McNutt had plans for selling fruitcakes to a wider audience. At the beginning, employees copied names and addresses of prospective customers out of phone books gathered from around the U.S.

McNutt led efforts to sell fruitcakes directly to international consumers and to create a database that could be computerized. Later, he was quick to recognize emerging technologies by accepting orders via phone, fax and the Internet.

A stickler for details who insisted on quality and customer service, McNutt bought a local pecan processor and an organic pineapple farm in Costa Rica to ensure a steady supply of ingredients for the best-selling “World Famous DeLuxe Fruitcake.”

The company sends out about 12 million mailings a year and has about 1 million customers in its database, Crawford said. The celebrity clientele include basketball great Julius Erving and Princess Caroline of Monaco, who picked up the annual order after her mother, Princess Grace, died.

Although the bakery says it will ship to any place in the world that receives mail service, one customer was turned away: Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, after the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, Iran.

“We didn’t think that was an order we needed to fill,” McNutt’s son said.

Two traditions surround fruitcakes -- one savoring the dense cakes filled with nuts and candied fruits, another ridiculing them as unwanted bookends -- and the McNutt family has come to understand both views.

“We can laugh at anything,” said Bob McNutt, who succeeded his father as president of the company. “For the most part, when people come up with a fruitcake joke -- all of which are bad, by the way -- it gives us an opportunity to get our message out.”

Born in Corsicana in 1925, Bill McNutt Jr. moved with his parents to Nashville, Tenn., and attended Vanderbilt University. He played both offense and defense on the 1943 football team, which went undefeated. He left college to serve in the U.S. Army at Camp Shelby, Miss., guarding German prisoners of war, and at Fort Dix, N.J., mustering soldiers out of the service.

McNutt returned to Vanderbilt and graduated in 1949 with a business degree, later earning a master’s at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. He initially went to work for his father and uncle, distributing Dr. Pepper in Tennessee. In 1954, he married Josephine Pritchett of Nashville.

McNutt, an avid football fan, became friends with Lamar Hunt, the Texas oilman who co-founded the American Football League and owned the Dallas Texans, which became the Kansas City Chiefs, now part of the National Football League.

Together, they owned the Dallas Tornado of the North American Soccer League and won the league title in 1971. The Tornado folded after the 1981 season and entered into a minority partnership with the Tampa franchise, transferring the Dallas player contracts and other assets to Florida. The entire league folded in 1984.

Hunt also became a minority partner in the Collin Street Bakery, and this week confirmed his appreciation for fruitcake.

“I don’t eat it year-round,” he said, “but at Christmastime, I’m right in there getting my fair share.”

McNutt is survived by his wife and their four children -- sons Bill III of Dallas and Bob of Corsicana, daughters Katherine McNutt and Melanie McNutt of Dallas, and two grandchildren.

Charles David Ray, or “Charlie,” 72 of Richland, passed away Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006.

The eldest of three children, Charlie was born to Floyd and Hazel Ray on Nov. 26, 1934 in Corsicana. Graduating in 1953, he set his sights on becoming a Highway Patrolman for the Texas Department of Public Safety. Kay Lansford of Richland would become his wife on July 22, 1954. Later on they welcomed their two daughters, Terri Lynn and Karen Jill into the world. Until his retirement, Charlie proudly served the Texas DPS for 20 years, first in Arlington and eventually relocating to Fairfield where he called home for the next 35 years. He was also member of the Fairfield Masonic Lodge for over 30 years.

Following his retirement he owned and operated “Charlie’s Truck Stop” and later took a position with Rutherford Auto in Fairfield.

Charlie was a friend to all who crossed his path. Traveling with his wife of 52 years and spending time with his two daughters, seven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, as well as his poker buddies filled his days.

Charlie will be greatly missed by his wife, Kay Lansford Ray of Richland, mother Hazel Ray of Corsicana, daughters, Terri Wiley and Jill Rash of Richland, grandchildren Nicole Hughes of Fairfield and Marlon Cockerell of Austin, Lauren Rash, Paige, Keaton and Zoey Ray, all of Richland, sister Barbara Adamson of Corsicana, brother Glen Ray of Grand Prairie, as well as his three great grandchildren, Olivia, Avi and Cameron or “Cash”.

Charlie was preceded in death by his father Floyd Ray, as well as his grandson Charles Grant Rash.

A Funeral Service will be held at Corley Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2006 at 10:30 a.m.

Visitation will be held on today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Corley Funeral Home.

Frances Garrett, a retired secretary, was born Aug. 25, 1917, in Corsicana, one of seven children of Paul and Bridgett Borsellino, who immigrated to America from Riberra, Sicily, Italy. She was a member of Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church. Frances graduated from Corsicana High School and attended Our Lady of Victory College in Fort Worth and retired from Mobil Oil Company.

She and her husband, Levi Bruce Garrett, traveled extensively in the United States and several foreign countries.

She served as president of the Southside Lions Auxiliary in Midland, where she lived for many years. She was also a member of Desk and Derrick Club for 30 years and the Saint Thomas Women’s Organization.

She was a loving, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Survivors include daughter, Linda Eileen Garrett D’Araujo and husband, John R. D’Araujo of Loudon, Tenn.; sons, L. LITTLE GIRL DIED EARLY FRIDAY AFTER ILLNESS FEW DAYS

Reba Charlie Fitzgerald, 9 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Fitzgerald, 619 South Fourteenth street, died Friday morning at 2:10 o’clock, following a short illness and the funeral will be held from the family home Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock with interment in Oakwood cemetery. The funeral services will be conducted by Rev. A. M. Hendricks, pastor of the Calvary Baptist church.

Surviving are her parents, three half-brothers, Edwin Price, student in the University of Texas; Charles Price and Norman Price all of Corsicana; two half-sisters, Mrs. Clarence Plyer and Miss Katherine Fitzgerald, both of Corsicana.

God Chose Reba Charlie Fitzgerald For His Valentine

On the morning of February 15, the death angel winged its way into the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fitzgerald, and took from them their loving daughter, Reba Charlie. Although it is Valentine day and perhaps a happy one for some let us not forget the dear little one who on this day God claimed for his own Valentine, Reba Charlie.

There was but little suffering, but there is much sadness in the home of her family and friends. She, being of an early school age had many little friends who will miss her, who on this Valentine day departed from her friends and happy home, to add a bright jewel to God’s Kingdom.

Dear father, mother, sisters and brothers, rest in peace, for in that bright world known as heaven she rests peacefully in the arms of her Saviour. I can see her loving parents, the happiness overflowing their hearts when God presented them with this jewel from his own kingdom. But upon this lovely morning at 2:30 o’clock, he replaced this jewel brighter and more cheerful than ever.

Charlie 'Joe' Fitzgerald

CORSICANA - Funeral for Charlie "Joe" Fitzgerald, 60, of rural Tarrant County, will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Corley Funeral Chapel in Corsicana, with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery in Blooming Grove.
Fitzgerald was found dead Tuesday morning in his home near Highway 287 between Kennedale and Mansfield.

Survivors include his mother, Nellie Fitzgerald of Corsicana; three daughters, Carolyn Jo Pina of Blanco, Nelda Ruth Spicer of New Braunfels and Elaine Fitzgerald of Arlington; two brothers, Aubrey Fitzgerald of Corsicana and Leslie Fitzgerald of Seagoville; four sisters, Violet Burns and Nellie Sherrard, both of Corsicana; Nora Weaver of Mexia and Allene Handlin of Cleburne; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Elmer Lee Fitzgerald, 57, of Corsicana, died Nov. 29, 1990, at the VA Hospital in Temple.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday in the Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery, with the Rev. Gary Johnson and the Rev. David Williams officiating. Corley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
He was born Nov. 7, 1933, in Corsicana. He was a plumber and had served in the U.S. Air Force.
Survivors include one son, Elmer Lee Fitzgerald Jr. of California; one daughter, Jane Stockam of Corsicana; three grandchildren; his mother, Estelle McCrary of Corsicana; his grandmother, Nell Fitzgerald of Corsicana; two brothers, Kenneth Jerry Oliver and Mike Mooneyhan, both of Mabank; and one sister, Jean Collier of Grand Prairie.

James Fitzgerald, 60, of Eureka, died Feb. 27, 1990, at his residence.

He was born March 2, 1929 in Corsicana. He was a retired plumber. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church and American Legion Post No. 345 in Austin. He served in the Army in World War II.
He is survived by his mother, Estelle McCrary, of Corsicana; one sister, Jeanie Collier of Corsicana; four brothers, Elmer Fitzgerald of Groesbeck, John Wesley French of Dallas, Kenneth Jerry Oliver and Michael Wayne Mooneyham, both of Mabank; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Sallie Fitzgerald, 96, of Corsicana died Friday at Navarro Regional Hospital.
Services are set for 2 p.m. Sunday at the Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home in Blooming Grove. Troy Brooks and Harold Scott will officiate, with burial following in the Rose Hill Cemetery.
Survivors include one son, Bud Fitzgerald of Corsicana; three daughters, Jessie Dee Brown, Frost, Jo Bays, Corpus Christi and Sue Etheredge, Dallas; one brother, A. Y. Meadows, Waxahachie; and eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be J. L. Watts, John L. Meador, Jack Meador, Vic Howell, Buck Douglas and J. D. Sheppard.

Funeral services were held at the Corley Chapel here Sunday with burial in the Hamilton Cemetery.

LITTLE BOY DIED AT NAVARRO TODAY; BURIAL WEDNESDAY

Thomas J. Fitzgerald, three-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Fitzgerald, 1404 West Eleventh avenue, died at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. R.M. Bonner at Navarro Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock after a short illness. The funeral will be held sometime Wednesday afternoon with burial in the Hamilton Cemetery.

Surviving are the parents, a brother, R.L. Ritzgerald, a sister, Gadae Mae Fitzgerald, all of Corsicana; grandparents and other relatives.

The funeral will be directed by the Sutherland-McCammon Funeral Home.

KILLED IN HIS STORE
A Merchant at Frost Found with a Bullet Hole Through His Head
Corsicana, Tex., Oct 30. - Reliable news reached this city to-day from Frost that Mr. Hugh Palmer, a prominent young merchant of that city and a son of Dr. Palmer, was found dead in his store, having been shot through the head. The wound is said to be a frightful one and his brains were scattered about the floor. Sheriff Weaver was wired for, but too late to catch the morning train. He went up on this evening's train. At the latest reports no investigation had been made, but it is the general impression that Mr. Palmer had been murdered and that the object of the assassin was robbery. Sheriff Weaver in now on the ground and will make a thorough investigation.
