Cassandra Keating Williams, 52, a loving wife, mother and sister, passed
away Monday, Feb. 18, 2008, at her home. Visitation will be held from 6
to 8 p.m. Friday at St. Michael Catholic Church in Bedford, with a
prayer vigil beginning at 7 p.m. with Deacon Harry Heinz officiating.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael
Catholic Church in Bedford with the Rev. Tom Kennedy officiating.
Interment will follow at Bear Creek Cemetery in Euless. Cassandra was
born Dec. 26, 1955, in Corsicana to the late Thomas and Sybil Keating.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Texas,
where she majored in art and minored in photography. She enjoyed working
with ceramics, playing golf, and fishing. Above all, she loved and
cherished her family who will miss her greatly. Cassandra was preceded
in death by her parents and her brother, Michael Keating. Survivors
include her husband, Daniel L. Williams; son, David Williams; daughter,
Mary Margaret Williams; brothers, Duane Keating and wife Laura, Kevin
Keating, and Timothy Keating; sister, Jennifer Long and husband Tim; and
a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and extended family members.

with her Heavenly Father on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008.
Services are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Winterfield United Methodist
Church, 2616 Tryon Road, in Longview. with the Rev. Rita Sims and the Rev. Gene
Steger officiating. Burial is set for Rosewood Park in the Garden of Devotion.
Services are under the direction of Rader Funeral Home.

Services for Leland Dale “Jimmy” Dosser, 76, Tri-Cities, were held Jan. 30,
2008, at Cooper Funeral Home in Athens with Bill Hauck officiating.
Burial with military honors were held in Malakoff Cemetery.
Dosser was born Nov. 26, 1931, in Kerens to Clara Hinton and Walter Dosser and
died Jan. 28, 2008, in Tyler.
He was preceded in death by his wife Rita Faye Dosser in 2005, and daughter
Rhonda Elaine Dosser in 1957.
He attended Cross Roads and Malakoff schools and served in the Army in Berlin.
He worked as a roughneck and was a journeyman technician for Curtes Mathes, the
Texas Department of Corrections and retired from Harvey Industries.
He was a member of Crescent Heights Baptist Church.
Survivors include his daughter Teresa Dosser Kirkpatrick, Tri-Cities; son Roy
Dosser, Tri-Cities; brother W.J. Dosser, Louisiana; three grandchildren and one
great-grandson.
Pallbearers were Robert Harris, Glen Smith, Michael Hughes, Joe Glasgow, Warren
Authement and Joe Holder.
Honorary pallbearers were Dustin Johnson, Trenton Dosser and Pat Glasgow.

BEAUMONT - Sterling Cromwell Crim was born Jan. 5, 1927, in Corsicana and died
Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008, at Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth.
Sterling was a life-long scholar earning six degrees, and after retirement
continued to study German and Spanish. He taught mathematics for 43 years at the
junior high, high school, junior college and university levels. His last 31
years were at Lamar University which included two years in Malaysia under an
international teaching program. Sterling proudly served his country in the
United States Army in the Philippines following World War II.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Louise Crim; daughter, Kathryn
Collins and her husband Terry of Glen Allen, Va.; son, Randy Crim and his wife
Ellen of Dallas; grandchildren, Laura and Julia Collins, Emily, Patrick, Andrew
and Charlotte Crim.
His parents, Willa Frances Cromwell and Churchill Wilbur Crim; and his brothers,
Truett, Churchill Jr. and Bill Crim preceded him in death.
A funeral service to honor the life of Sterling Crim will be 10 a.m. Wednesday,
Feb. 13, 2008, at First United Methodist Church, 701 Calder, Beaumont under the
direction of Broussard's, 1605 North Major Dr., Beaumont. A graveside service
will follow at 3 p.m. at Crim's Chapel in Henderson where his parents, brothers
and many other family members are interred. A gathering of family and friends
will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008, at the Mortuary.

Frankie Frost, 86, of Whitney, died Feb. 15, 2008. She was born June 15, 1921,
in Athens, Texas, to Franklin and Myrtle (McClanahan) Fisher.
Frankie married D. L. Frost Oct. 18, 1941, in Kerens, Texas. Frankie loved to
travel, read a very good book and work in the yard gardening. She was a member
of King Memorial United Methodist Church in Whitney.
Frankie was preceded in death by her parents; sister Esther Frost; and brothers
Johnnie and Clarence Fisher.
She is survived by her husband; children, Louise Jordan and husband Ronald of
Livingston; Jack Frost and wife Pamela of Cedar Hill; brothers, Norris Fisher
and wife Naomi of Atlanta, Ga.; Nolan Fisher and wife Doris of Euless; Bob
Fisher and wife Roz of Georgetown; Carl fisher and wife Dale of Waco.
She is also survived by four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and four
great-great-grandchildren.
Organized by Marshall & Marshall Funeral Directors, funeral services were Feb.
18, 2008, with Chaplain Ron Hill of Bluebonnet Hospice officiating. Interment
followed at Bethlehem Cemetery.

at Franklin County Hospital, will be at noon Monday, Sept. 18, at Greater New

Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery in Copiah County under the direction of
George F. West Funeral home.
Visitation is from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and from 11 a.m. to
noon Monday at the church.
Mr. Arnold was born March 28, 1916, in Franklin County, the son of Gable and
Bessie Kelly Arnold.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Viola Arnold of Meadville; four sons, Jimmy Arnold
Jr., Charles Arnold and Glen Arnold, all of Indianapolis, and Joseph Arnold of
Meadville; one stepson, Jimmy Dale Arnold of Natchez; four daughters, Joyce
Vaughn and Geneva Arnold, both of Indianapolis, Maryland Arnold of Dallas and
Patsy Griffith of Bude; 17 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one
brother, J.C. Arnold of Natchez; and a number of other relatives.

Jones and Florence N. Jones, died January 30, 2008 in Garland, Texas.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Bobbye (Greene) Jones;
daughters, Debbee Reynolds and Donna Haley; grandchildren, Shaun
Reynolds and wife, Cindy, Jennifer Richardson and husband, Frank,
Jonathan Christie, and Gregory Case; great-grandchildren, Austin Tylor
Reynolds and Brina Rene Richardson; and a sister, Sue Woods.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, two sisters, and
one grandson.

Judge R. R. Owen, 86, long time attorney and active in politics many years, 1120
West Fifth avenue, died Thursday morning following an extended illness.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. from the Corley Chapel with
burial in Oakwood cemetery. The rites will be conducted by Rev. Robert J. Potts,
pastor of the First Baptist church, of which he was a long-time member, Sunday
School teacher and choir member.
Born Feb. 19, 1879 in Hines County, Miss., he came to Navarro county 80 years
ago in an ox-wagon train from Mississippi.
After teaching school several years, he studied law and was admitted to the bar.
He served as Navarro county judge from 1912-1916 and broke a tie-vote in 1915
among the county commissioners to establish the old Physicians and Surgeons
hospital on the site that is now Twilight Home in southeast Corsicana. He had
his law offices in the Daily Sun Building from 1917 until failing health
required he give up practice.
Judge Owen served several terms as a Representative from Navarro county in the
Texas Legislature and headed the draft board in World War I. He was secretary
and a leader in the Navarro county Democratic executive committee and party for
many years.
Surviving are a son, Robert Owen, Corsicana; three grand-children, six
great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Nephews will be pallbearers.

Graveside services for Starlet K. Bridger, two-day-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
E. S. Bridger, Route 1, Barry, were held Thursday at 3 p.m. at the
Hamilton cemetery. The rites

The child died in Memorial hospital Wednesday morning.
Surviving are the parents, two brothers, Terry Bowling and Timmy Bowling, and
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Coker, all of Barry, and other relatives.

Death of Captain A. S. Gill
Corsicana, Tex., Jan. 4, - When Captain A. S. Gill died at his residence in
Blooming Grove yesterday, one of Navarro County's oldest and most popular and
influential citizens passed to his final reward. Captain Gill came to this
county from Alabama in 1866 and settled near Purdon, but in later years has made
his home at Blooming Grove. He was twice elected to the Legislature, was always
a loyal Democrat, and was also a prominent Mason and member of the Methodist
Church. His remains were buried this afternoon in the
cemetery at Dresden.

Capt. A. S. Gill, twice a member of the legislature from Navarro county, and a
citizen of the county since 1866, died at his home in Blooming Grove Monday
afternoon. He was a Mason, a member of the Methodist church and an enthusiastic
citizen. His personal acquaintance was large and all who knew him liked him for
his good nature and splendid intellect. He lived near Purdon for a great many
years, but a few years ago moved from his farm to Blooming Grove. He had many
fine traits of character and was liked by everyone. He will be greatly missed
not alone by his home people and his family, but by his friends in all parts of
the county.

Funeral services for John Bonner, 74, who died in Fort Worth Wednesday morning,
were held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. from the Griffin Chapel.
The rites were conducted by Rev. Benny McBryde, pastor of the Eureka Methodist
church. Burial was in the Eureka cemetery
with the Eureka Masonic Lodge in charge.
Native of Eureka, he was a retired government employee. He was a member of the
Wichita Methodist church in Fort Worth and was a veteran of
World War I. He was
a member of the Eureka Masonic Lodge, of which he was a past master, past
commander of Bertram duGuesclin Commandry No. 1, Knights Templar, Corsicana and
a member of Mosian Shrine Temple, Forth Worth.
Surviving are is wife of Fort Worth a son John Bonner Jr.

John Bonner Dies Wednesday, Rites Thursday
John Bonner, 74, native of Eureka, died at his home, 5183 Paris, Fort Worth,
Wednesday morning. He was a retired government employe.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. from the Griffin Chapel. The
rites will be conducted by Rev. Benny McBryde, pastor of the Eureka Methodist
church. Burial will be in the Eureka cemetery
with the Eureka Masonic Lodge in charge of graveside rites.
Bonner was a member of the Wichita Methodist church in Fort Worth. He was a
veteran of
World War I and was a 50-year member
of the Eureka Masonic lodge of which he was a past master. He also was past
commander of the Bertram duGuesclin Comandery No. 14, Knights Templar and a
member of Moslah Shrine Temple, Fort Worth.
Surviving are his wife of Fort Worth; a son, John Bonner, Jr., San Angelo; a
daughter, Mrs. Bob Lee, Sulphur Springs; six grandchildren, three brothers,
Hayes and Fred Bonner, both of Corsicana, and Brice Bonner, Eureka; four
sistsers, Miss Mary Belle Bonner, Mrs. A.E. Lewis and Mrs. M.M. Minze, all of
Houston and Mrs. J.M. Price, Corpus Christi, and other relatives.

Ike Roberts, 71, Route 1, died at his home Sunday afternoon following a several
months' illness.
Surviving are a brother, Lester Parker, Broken Bow, Okla.; three sisters, Miss
Cora Roberts, Corsicana' Mrs. E. A. Jaggers, Broadway, N.M., and Mrs. W. Z.
Polley, San Augustine, and other relatives.
Arrangements were pending early age and resided there until Griffin Funeral
Chapel, but burial will be in Roberts cemetery in San Augustine.

FUNERAL SERVICES TUESDAY AFTERNOON FOR J. W. HODGE
Funeral services for J. W. Hodge, aged 56? years, well known farmer of this
section, who died on the Clay Nash farm six miles west of Corsicana on the
Corbet road Monday night at 6 o'clock following a lingering illness, where held
Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the family residence with burial in
Oakwood cemetery. The services were
conducted by Rev. J. Howard Williams, pastor of the First Baptist church. He had
resided on Judge Nash's farm for the past 25 years.
Surviving are two sons, R. M. Hodge, Corbet road; and W. L. Hodge, St. Jo; two
daughters, Mrs. W. H. Draper, Burkburnett, and Mrs. J. N. Richardson, Emhouse,
and two sisters, Mrs. Lizzie Howell, Athens, and Mrs. Nellie Robinson, Comanche.
Pallbearers were Gene Harris, J Cook, Dan Tucker, May Owens, Beaton Owens, and
Jesse Howell.
Friends were honorary pallbearers.
The funeral was directed by of Corley McMahon Funeral Home.

FUNERAL SERVICES HELD TUESDAY FOR WELL KNOWN FARMER
J. W. Hodge, aged 66 years, died at his home near Corsicana Monday
evening at 7:45 o’clock, following an illness of several weeks. Mr.
Hodges has been a prominent farmer of Navarro county for 23 years.
He was born in Henderson county in 1875. He married Miss Vernon
Francher of Athens. They moved to Navarro county to reside in 1908.
His wife died in July, 1924.
He is survived by four children, two sons and two daughters, Mrs.
Herman Draper of Burkburnett; Mrs. J. N. Richardson of Ellis county;
Leslie Hodge of St. Jo, and Myrle Hodge of Corsicana, who made his
home with his father.
The funeral was held from the family home at 3 o’clock Tuesday
afternoon with burial in
Oakwood Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Eugene Harris, J. Cook, Leo Palmer, Dan
Tucker, Boe Owen and Beaden Owen.
Honorary pallbearers were Clay Nash, George Boyd, Jack Hagar, Si
Hamilton, Frank Wilson, J. B. Nichols, Jesse Howell, Leonard

Funeral services for Mrs. E. H. Tekell, 87, who died in an Athens hospital early
Tuesday, were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Corley Chapel with burial in
Oakwood cemetery.
The rites were conducted by Rev. Payton Goodman, pastor of the First Methodist
church of Hubbard, formerly of Corsicana and Navarro county Methodist churches.
Mrs. Tekell was a member of the Eleventh avenue Methodist church.
Native a New Albany, Miss., Mrs. Tekell came to Navarro county at the age of six
years. She and her late husband who died in 1957, resided on a farm near Mertens
for many years until moving to Corsicana in 1929.
Surviving are three sons, M. A. and J. S. Tekell, both of Corsicana and R. R.
Tekell, Cleburne; two daughters, Mrs. Miller Goodman, Albany, and Mrs. Lola

Mrs. E. H. Tekell Expires Athens Hospital Today
Mrs. E. H. Tekell, 87, long-time Corsicana and Navarro county resident, died in
the Henderson County Memorial hospital in Athens early Tuesday morning. She had
resided in an Athens rest home for the past several years.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Corley Chapel with
burial in
Oakwood cemetery.
A native of New Albany, Miss., Mrs. Tekell came to Texas and Navarro county when
six years of age and the family resided on a farm near Mertens on the
Navarro-Hill county line until she and her late husband moved to Corsicana in
1929. Her husband died in 1957.
Mrs. Tekell was an active member of the Eleventh Avenue Methodist church.
Surviving are three sons, M. A. and J. S. Tekell, both of Corsicana, and R. R.
Tekell, Cleburne; two daughters, Mrs. Miller Goodman, Albany, and Mrs. Lois
Kemp, Corsicana; 13 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren and other
relatives.
Grandsons will be pallbearers.

Golden served in the U.S. Army in the infantry in France during
World War I.

Mrs. Edens was a life-long Corsicana resident. She had been ill for several
months.

Hutson had resided in Beaumont six years.

Arnett resided in the Cryer Creek community for many years before moving to
Corsicana. He died at the family residence, 1322 North Beaton Street.
Surviving are his wife of Corsicana, four sons, Travis, Johnny, Frank and J. T.
Arnett, and a daughter, Mrs. L. A. Douglas, all of Corsicana; a brother, Rube
Arnett, Kerens; 20 grandchildren including County Judge Kenneth A. Douglas; 38
great-grandchildren, and other relatives.

World War I Veteran Dies
Sunday funeral services were held in Cooper's Chapel Baptist Church, Forreston,
for Jessie (Uncle Bud) Crenshaw, 75, native Corsicanaan and veteran of
World War I. He died in the Lisbon
hospital in Dallas Wednesday. Burial was in Waxahachie.
Before moving to Ellis county, Crenshaw was employed at the Taylor saddle shop
and the Cotton Belt freight office here. Among his survivors are his wife, four
children, and a niece, Mrs. Cora Lewis of Corsicana.

CB Engineer Dies Monday
Jack S. Caldwell, 65, Cotton Belt engineer of Tyler, guest in the Navarro hotel,
was pronounced dead on arrival at Memorial hospital about 11 a.m. Monday after
he is reported to have become ill earlier in the morning.
The body was taken to the Corley Funeral Home and was to be transferred Monday
afternoon to the Burks-Walker-Tippitts Funeral Home in Tyler.
Caldwell checked into the the hotel about 5:25 a.m. Monday after his train had
arrived in Corsicana at 4:28 a.m.

Pearl Audrey Horton Bates, 99, of Rockwall, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008,
in Rockwall. She was born Dec. 27, 1908, in Purdon to Sim and Roxie Ivie. She is
survived by her granddaughter, Diann Mellon of Greenville; two great-grandsons,
Troy Daniels of Dallas and Cory Daniels and wife Anna Lorie of South Carolina;
two great-great-grandchildren, Emma Daniels and Rachael Daniels; and sister, Jo
Ann. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Griffin-Roughton Funeral
Home. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at
Resthaven Memorial Park.

MARGUERITE WATTS NICHOLS 1918 - 2008 Marguerite Watts Nichols was born
in Silsbee, Texas in 1918 and died at the age of 89 on February 14,
2008, in Houston, her home for the past 62 years. Marguerite was a
devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Marguerite was
born in Silsbee, Tx, where she graduated from Silsbee High School at the
age of 16. She entered Texas State College for Women in Denton, Texas,
where she played the saxophone in the college orchestra. After her
freshman year, she transferred to the University of Texas where she
studied elementary education. In 1938 Marguerite married James (Nick)
Bryant Nichols of Corsicana, Texas, and they made their home in Houston
in 1943. In 1948 Marguerite and Nick and their two children moved to
Spring Branch to live in the country. Marguerite was a teacher in the
Spring Branch Independent School District, where she taught Kindergarten
at Ridgecrest Elementary from its opening in 1953 thru 1967. Marguerite
was a great teacher, not only to her students but also to her family.
She was an accomplished pianist and was the pianist and organist at
Spring Branch Community Church in the 1950's. She was also a member of
Spring Branch Presbyterian Church and John Knox Presbyterian Church. She
was preceded in death by her husband, James (Nick) Bryant Nichols; her
parents, Maggie Viola Flowers and Charles Bruce Watts; and her brother,
Charles Bruce Watts, Jr. Surviving are her son, Jay B. Nichols and wife,
Martha, of Katy, Texas; daughter, Becky Nichols Virtue and her husband
Bill Fisk, of Houston, Texas; three grandchildren, Stacie Reed and her
husband, Eric; Kristi Draughon Harrison and her husband, Sam; and
Stephanie Husmann and her husband, Larry. She is also survived by eight
great-grandchildren and her nephews, Charles Watts, III of Silsbee,
Texas, and Mark Nokes of Honolulu, Hawaii. Funeral services will be held
at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 18, in the chapel at Houston's First
Baptist Church with Pastor Eric Reed officiating. A reception will
follow at the church. Visitation will be Sunday, February 17, from

EVELYN COLLINS WANDELL, passed away on February 7, 2008 in Corsicana, Texas,
where she had resided for the past four years. Evelyn was born in Navarro
County, Emhouse, Texas. She is preceded in death by her husband, A. C. Wandell,
parents, Jim Bob and Mamie Collins and her sister, Lavern Chatfield. Evelyn
graduated from Texas Women's University. She had resided in the Houston and
LaPorte areas for many many years before moving back to the Corsicana area. She
started her teaching career in Emhouse, Texas. Evelyn taught at The Henderson
Elementary School in Houston for over 38 years before retiring in 1978. Upon
retirement she belonged to several local garden clubs in the La Porte area, she
also served as president. Evelyn is survived by her sisters, Midred Farmer of
Houston, TX, Joyce Love and husband James of Corsicana, TX, Jimmie McCann of
Pursley, TX, and Betty Armstrong and husband Bobby of Barry, TX; several nieces
and nephews and a host of friends. Graveside services will be held on Monday,
February 11, 2008 at 2:00 PM at Grand View Bethany Memorial Park.

Elizabeth Ann Murphrey. Born: December 16, 1931. Died: February 2, 2008.
Like the tumbleweed of her youth, she rode the arid west Texas winds out
of Lamesa, through the University for good Baptist girls in Waco, and
into the arms of the flyboy of her dreams, jet jockey John of Kerens.
Wedded in 1954, they rode the rest of her way together,
hand-holding-back-row-small-town-movie-teens, flying past his high wire
engineering work in planes that often never landed and, later a law
office she helped run, through the turbulence of two boys and the
thunderstorm loss of another, to land back where they began, in the mail
order golden years ordered by most, delivered to few. A beast called
Cancer snatched her mind and body on February 2, 2008. But their gold
remains, a shimmering example of what life's postman can bring when two
glide the changing winds together. They were briefly separated by air
force duty shortly after their nuptials. Her father, taciturn and pious
as a western movie hero, drove her, without speaking, the ninety some
odd mirage mirrored miles to Big Spring to retrieve the flyboy who stole
his little girl's heart. In perhaps her first act of parental defiance,
Ann mugged with her new husband in the backseat throughout the return
leg. Her father didn't speak on the way home either. Twenty five years
later, like a real-life Sally Fields character, she returned to her
homeland to ride shotgun on a cotton picker when a tenant farmer was
threatened by a neighbor. Her daddy would have been proud. Faith was her
touchstone and Ann was an irrepressible student of the bible. She taught
a Sunday school class that began with a handful, grew to capacity and,
more importantly to her, became -- something more than a class -- women
supporting and loving each other, and another Father made proud. Her
flyboy had a double secret, coded nickname for her, the genesis of which
the couple shared with nary a living soul. Once, begged by their then
young children to reveal the code in their Will, the couple merely
laughed. A secret that will die with them, a part of the way they lived,
private, united, and forever shielding each other from the harsh desert
winds that brought them together fifty four years ago. Ann's death
leaves a jagged hole in the fabric of the lives around her, including
her: sons, Tim Murphrey and Jeff Murphrey; their wives, Heather Murphrey
and Adrienne Murphrey, grandson Zac Murphrey, granddaughter Jordan Grace
Murphrey, and great grandson Tashen Murphrey; sister-in-law Patsy Hodges
and her husband Houston Hodges; brother-in-law John Shillingburg, nephew
John Douglas Shillingburg, his wife Rebecca Shillingburg and children
John Kendall Shillingburg and Laura Chandler Shillingburg, her niece
and, in a home overfilled with testosterone, the closest thing to a
daughter she had, Susie Shillingburg Morris, her husband David Van
Morris and their children (and her namesakes) Caroline Ann Morris and
Mallory Elizabeth Morris, and nephews Tommy and Charles Parker. Ann was
predeceased by her infant son John Mark Murphrey, parents Velma and C.A.
Hollingsworth and her sister Nancy Shillingburg. The family will never
be able to properly thank or repay their dept to Shirley Walton of
Houston Hospice, an Angel in Human Form. A memorial service has been set
for 11:00 AM Tuesday February 5, 2008 at the Tallowood Baptist Church,

Roger Majors Sr., 72, of Amarillo died Monday, Feb. 11, 2008.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in River of Life Church with the Revs. Billy
and Andrea Wheeler, pastors, and the Rev. T.W. McClenton officiating. Burial
will be in Llano Cemetery by Warford-Walker Mortuary, 509 N. Hughes St.
Roger Majors was born July 4, 1935, in Corsicana to Love and Marion Majors Sr.
He attended public schools in Shamrock at Dunbar School, where he played
basketball and received many awards for his athletic abilities. He met and
married Kathryn Wren on May 26, 1954, and to this union six children were born.
After relocating to Amarillo, Roger was employed with Glover's Meat Packing and
Amarillo Meat Packing before becoming employed with the city of Amarillo, where
he worked until he retired.
Survivors include three sons, Luther Ray Majors, Billy Wayne Majors and Timothy
Shawn Majors, all of Amarillo; a daughter, Doris Jean Majors of Amarillo; a
brother, Finnie Majors of Charleston, S.C.; 13 grandchildren; six
great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Virginia McLean, 89, of Amarillo died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2007.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Llano Cemetery Mausoleum with
the Rev. Jeff Messer and the Rev. Jim Fox officiating. Burial will be at Llano
Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 South Georgia St.
Mrs. McLean was born June 8, 1918, in Corsicana to William Stanley and Marie
Francis. She graduated from Waco High School and married Will D. McLean in
Corsicana on April 15, 1937. She attended Baylor University and worked for Dr.
Wheir and Dr. Swindell as the business manager. Later she joined the staff at
Dr. Richard Chandler's office as the insurance clerk. She also worked as the
equine insurance manager at the American Quarter Horse Association.
Mrs. McLean was an avid fan and patron of the arts in Amarillo. She was a
concert pianist, talented artist and an animal lover. She was a member of the
Women's Division of the Chamber of Commerce, the American Business Women's
Association and First Christian Church. She was simply known as "Mim" to her
beloved grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1976, and her
brother, Walter W. Francis in 1983.
Survivors include three daughters, Carol Stroud and husband Richard, Vicki
McLean and husband George Lokey, and Annette Ruddy, all of Amarillo; her
grandchildren, Cyndi and Jim Bloom, Kim and Alex Rosson, Mike and Deb Stroud,
Greg and Bunny Stroud, Chris and Dawn McLean, Joe and Susan Ruddy and Michael
Ruddy; and eight great-grandchildren.

manager.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Margaret Lupello; and
a daughter, Diana Lee Nelson.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Mary Lee Weems; a son, Jack
"Buddy" Weems; two daughters, Patricia Thompson and Mary Weems; a
brother, Tommy Joe Weems; six grandchildren; and seven

Maudie Faye Jordan, a resident of Corsicana, passed away on Wednesday,
Feb. 20, 2008, at the age of 94, in Corsicana. She was born near Dawson
in the Union High community on Jan. 24, 1914, to I. H. “Bud” Jordan and
Eunice Pearl Sawyer Jordan. Maudie graduated from the Union High Schools
where she excelled in sports, especially basketball as the high scorer
for the team. Her family was very important to her. She took care of her
younger siblings after the death of her mother and was later a caregiver
for her special needs sister, Myrtle. She worked for the Mexia State
School in the evening for 15 years retiring in 1972. Maudie was involved
in the Ladies Auxiliary at Pursley Missionary Baptist Church and later
with her church in Corsicana at Second Avenue Baptist Church. She liked
to crochet and watch the Texas Rangers and Dallas Cowboys. In her
lifetime Maudie only lived in two homes, the one she grew up in and the
one in Corsicana where she moved to be closer to town. Maudie was
preceded in death by her parents, I.H. “Bud” Jordan and Eunice Pearl
Sawyer Jordan; brothers, Marvin, Merl, Melvin and Milford Jordan;
sisters, Mamie Freeland, Mellie Evans and Myrtle Jordan; nephew, Bert
Jordan; niece, Billie Freeland Pierce; and great-nephew, Scott Jordan.
Survivors include her nephew, Milford Lloyd Jordan and wife Sharron of
Corsicana; nieces, Nelda Neal and husband Franklin of Corsicana, Peggy
Parker and husband Charley of Pearland, Sandra French and husband
Charles of Mesquite, Regina Foreman and husband Jimmy of Mexia and Renee
Frazier and husband David of Coolidge; brother-in-law, Joseph Evans of

Cynthia Anne “Cindy” Ogden was born April 29, 1953 in Corsicana and
passed away Feb. 20, 2008 in Annapolis, MD at the age of 54, formerly of
Mesquite, resident of Queenstown, MD. Cindy was a proud homemaker, a
devoted wife and loving mother. She had a degree in Speech Pathology
from North Texas University and earned her M.S. in education from East
Texas State. She was a teacher in the Kaufman and Mesquite ISDs. Cindy’s
true passion was leading the women’s ministry and sharing and exploring
God’s word. She was a remarkable woman and a woman of God. Cindy was
preceded in death by her son, Charles Darnell Ogden. She is survived by
her husband of 22 years, Charles A. “Tony” Ogden; sons, Damon C. Venia
and Brett A. Ogden; father and mother, Wayne and Flora Rose; sister,
Linda Harrelson; and nephews, Corey, David and Chris Harrelson.
Visitation will be 2 to 5 p.m. today at Laurel Oaks Funeral Home in
Mesquite. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday at Emmanuel
Pentecostal Church, 1200 Poplar Drive, Mesquite, Texas, 75149, with the
Rev. Harold Scott and the Rev. Richard Flowers officiating. Interment to
follow at Laurel Oaks Memorial Park in Mesquite. Memorials may be made

A. “Charlie” Goldsmith, 93, of Corsicana passed away on Tuesday, Feb.
19, 2008, at Health Care and Rehab of Corsicana. Born on Jan. 11, 1915,
in Tokio, Texas, he was raised in and around that community. In his
adulthood, he took pride in his work as a weaver and a loom fixer at
Textile (Cotton) Mills in West, Itasca, Mexia, Corsicana, Bonham, and
Hillsboro, but he could never quite get away from work in the soil. With
an extraordinary green thumb, he always grew a garden wherever he lived,
and sometimes fruit trees and berry vines. His greatest joys were his
family, his gardening, and his avocation — his passion — music. He
played several instruments, but his favorite was his fiddle, and he
could mesmerize others with his fiddle playing. He liked to brag that he
once sat in with Willie Nelson, playing his fiddle of course, at one of
the night clubs that used to be in West. Arthritis robbed him of the
pleasure of fiddle playing in his later years, a stroke in 2001 rendered
him bedfast, and diabetes cost him his legs. Nevertheless, he was very
tough, and God granted him the milestone of 93 years before succumbing
to COPD. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Corley
Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22,
at Corley Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Jerry Turner and Brother Jeff
White officiating. Interment will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23,
at Ridge Park Cemetery in Hillsboro. Honorary pallbearers will be Dustin
Aaron Hoover, USMC; Toby Scholl, USMC; Brian Patterson, USMC; Seth Cope,
James Cope, and Derek Martin. Mr. Goldsmith was preceded in death by a
son, Larry Charles Goldsmith; parents, S. L. and Esther Annie Goldsmith;
five brothers and five sisters. He is survived by his wife of 71 years,
Irma Deene Davidson Goldsmith; daughter and son-in-law, Amy Jo and
Leslie Patterson of Corsicana; six grandchildren and their spouses,
Phyllis and Wes Cope, Peri Patterson, David and Judy Patterson, Kimberly
and Danny Scholl, Debbie and Frank Holloway, Terri and Gary Turner; and

Ray Jenkins
Michael Ray Jenkins was born Jan. 10, 1938 to Thomas Harold and Lola
Jenkins of McGregor, Texas. He spent his childhood in McGregor where he
met the love of his life Leila Don Ledbetter with whom he shared many
treasured childhood memories. Together, they graduated from McGregor
High School in 1956. Mike went on to attend the University of Texas
where he graduated with a degree in Pharmacy in May of 1960. Mike and
Leila were married shortly after his graduation on July 23, 1960. Mike
served in the United States Army beginning in October 1960 and was
initially stationed at Ft. Hood in Killeen, Texas. In April 1961, he was
sent to France and served as a pharmacist at the US Army 34th General
Hospital in LaChapelle, France outside of Orleans. While there, Mike and
Leila became members of an English-language Baptist Church consisting of
military families which God used greatly to help them grow in their
spiritual lives. It was there Mike started teaching Sunday School and
was ordained as a deacon. They had the opportunity to travel extensively
throughout Europe experiencing some of their greatest memories. On Aug.
21, 1962, Sharon Lee Jenkins was born to Mike and Leila while in
Orleans. However, because of a premature birth, she went to be with the
Lord on Aug. 23, 1962. Shortly thereafter, Mike was honorably discharged
from the Army and he and Leila returned to the states moving to
Corsicana, Texas where Mike began work as a pharmacist at Reid’s
Pharmacy. Soon thereafter, they joined Northside Baptist Church where
Mike served as a Sunday School teacher and deacon until the time of his
death. In June of 1964, son Michael Scott Jenkins was born. Later, in
1985, Scott married Linda Gail Nicholson whom Mike came to love dearly.
Mike purchased Reid’s Pharmacy upon the retirement of Miller Reid in
1987. Grandson John Mark Jenkins was born in December of 1990 and
quickly became the source of one of Mike’s greatest joys. After 14 years
as owner of Reid’s Pharmacy, Mike retired in 2001. Since retirement,
Mike and Leila have been able to devote 100 percent of their time to the
things they loved most, their family, their church, service to others
through many means, including Gideons International and traveling. Mike
will be remembered most for his love for his Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ, his quiet and gentle spirit, and his servant’s heart.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, T. H. Jenkins, Jr.;
sister, Doris Ruth Jenkins; and daughter, Sharon Lee Jenkins.
Survivors are his wife of 47 years, Leila Don Ledbetter Jenkins; son,
Scott Jenkins and daughter-in-law Gail Jenkins of Robinson; grandson,
John Mark Jenkins of Robinson; brother, Charles Jenkins and
sister-in-law Rita of West Columbia; sister, Mary Felty and
brother-in-law Howard of Waco; sister-in-law, Joyce Jenkins of Humble;
and other extended family.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Building Fund
of Northside Baptist Church of Corsicana or to Gideons International.
Family visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at Griffin-Roughton Funeral
Home in Corsicana. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday,
Feb. 26, 2008 at Northside Baptist Church in Corsicana with Dr. Rick
Lamb officiating. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. at the McGregor Cemetery.

Mrs. Reeves was born Oct. 20, 1920 in Corsicana. She was an assembler. Mrs.
Reeves was the manager of Scotchburger for many years and a member of Memorial
Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, L. J. Reeves; sister, Lorene
Berryhill; and brothers, Howard Poole and Ralph Poole.
Mrs. Reeves is survived by son, Billy Reeves of Ft. Worth; son and
daughter-in-law, Gary and Dana Reeves of Athens; four grandchildren; numerous
nieces, nephews and cousins; and close friend, Charles Weatherby of Ft. Worth.

BLOOMING GROVE MAN DIES AFTER ILLNESS FEW HOURS
J. F. PAGE, AGED SEVENTY YEARS, WAS NATIVE OF TEXAS

Blooming Grove, Nov. 30.—J. F. Page age 70 years, died at his home here Sunday
afternoon from an attack of acute indigestion from which he had suffered since
Saturday night. He is survived by his wife and three children, Uriah Page of
Chism, Mrs. Robert Hendrix of Chism, and Mrs. Wes Bullen, Brookshire.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock at the Central Baptist
church in this city and were conducted by Revs. Johnston and Carroway. Burial
was in Rose Hill cemetery.
Mr. Page was born in Anderson county 70 years ago last May. He married Miss Mary
Smith December 23 1888, and to this union there were born ten children, three of
whom are living.
He had been a resident of this community for several years.

Well Known Citizen Passed Away Sunday
J. F. Page passed away at 3:15 Sunday afternoon. The death of this splendid
citizen came as a profound surprise to the general public, as his illness was of
short duration and consequently not generally known.
Owing to age Mr. Page was not a very stout man, was subject to occasional minor
interruptions in his health. For this reason his wife was not alarmed when he
was taken ill Saturday night. The family physician was called and the patient
rested very well during the night.
Sunday morning he was pronounced better. About noon Sunday he suddenly turned
for the worse and passed away as above stated.
Those who knew Mr. Page will testify to his high moral character and his lofty
ideals. He was not much of a man to lend his endorsement to foolish fashion nor
did he uphold principles and practices not founded in truth and nurtured on
sound doctrine. He was studious and widely read; a man with conviction, courage
and a purpose. He loved the church and found great pleasure in rendering
whatever service he could to his fellowman. No man was fairer in his dealings,
no man more loyal to his country's laws. Truly a sound citizen has gone.
He was 70 years old last May. He is survived by his wife and three children,
namely, May who married Robert Hendrix of Rockwall county; Uriah Page who lives
near Terrell; Clara who married Mr. Buller and lives at Brookshire, all getting
here for the funeral, which was conducted at Central Baptist church. Pastor
Johnston was assisted in conducting the service by Rev. Carraway, Rev. Wagner,
Rev. Archer.
Interment took place at Rose Hill.

Whirled to Death in Line Shaft at Gin
SWEETWATER, Texas, Oct. 1 - W. G. Owens, 55, was whirled to death when he became
entangled in a line shaft at the Farmers' Gin at Roscoe, near here. A belt
slipped off which he was endeavoring to replace. The body was sent to Blooming
Grove, his former home for burial. A wife, son and two daughters survive.

Owens, who was killed when
caught in a gin belt at Roscoe,
were held Thursday afternoon at
his former home, Blooming Grove.
The deceased was 55 years old
and is survived by his wife and
three children, two sons and a
daughter and a brother Eugene
Owens and Mrs. Ida Wright both
of Oklahoma.
He was formerly a member of
the local K. of P. lodge and was
an active member of the Walnut
Springs lodge. Members of the local
lodge met the train at 11 o'clock
today and assisted in transferring
the body to Blooming Grove. A
number of citizens from Frost and
Blooming Grove also met the train.
Mr. Owens moved from Blooming
Grove to Walnut Springs about 18
years ago and had made his home
at that place since that time until
recently when he moved to Roscoe,
where he met with the accident
which resulted in his death.

Death of a Former Citizen
Will Owens was accidentally killed in a cotton gin at Roscow, and
the remains were forwarded to Blooming Grove and interred at Rose
Hill. Deceased married Miss Dora Scott, was a member of the Baptist
church and his many friends here remember him as an upright
gentleman.

Mrs. W. T. Buckalew, 77 years old, died Thursday at her home, 1512 St. Louis
Street. She is survived by her husband, three daughters, Mrs. George W. Caye of
Brownwood, Mrs. U.S. Fulton of Fort Worth and Mrs. M. E. Holtzhensen of Dallas,
and three sons, S. J., F. K., and W. D Buckalew, all of Dallas. Following
funeral services at the chapel of Lamar & Smith Thursday night, the body was
sent to Blooming Grove for burial.

Mrs. W. T. Buckalew Dead
Mrs. W. T. Buckalew was laid to rest in Rose Hill Friday. She died in Dallas
after a lingering spell. The funeral was held at the First Baptist church and a
most touching service was held. Relatives and others came from Dallas and a
number were present from different points in Navarro county. Deceased was 67
years old and formerly lived here.
Following were the active pallbearers: J. W. Phillips, J. B; Jones. Brown, J. W.
Spivey, J. T. Whorton, Fon Smith, R. D. George Jr.
The deceased formerly lived in Blooming Grove and her memory is tenderly
cherished by the older settlers.

William Thomas Buckalew, 69 years old, died Saturday at his residence, 1512 St.

He had been a resident of Dallas several years, and he lost his wife there four
months ago. He felt keenly the loss of his life partner and no doubt this grief
for one he loved as well as he did his own life hastneed his own end.
Dr. Buckalew was strong of mind, strong in purpose, carried conviction and
courage to assert it. At the same time he was tender-hearted and sympathethc,
just as mild and modest as a woman.
At his death he was right at 70 years old and until seized suddenly by appoplexy
was actively engaged in the practice of his profession.

Funeral services for Mrs. Lula Belle Richardson, 78, a resident of Dallas for
the last 30 years, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in Bethel Temple, 210 East
Jefferson.
Mrs. Richardson died Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. L. D. Strawn,
3514 North Fitzhugh. She was a native of Dawson, Navarro County.
She is survived by four other daughters, Mrs. R. L. Jackson, Mrs. Earl Fleeman,
Mrs. T. A. Sparks, all of Dallas, and Mrs. Eddie Skoglio of Phoenix, Ariz.;
three sons, Douglas A. Richardson, J.C. Richardson and T. E. Richardson, all of
Dallas; a sister, Mrs. Lillie McNabb of Dallas; 24 grandchildren, 33
great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Jess Jackson will officiate at funeral services. Burial will be in

pastor of the First Methodist church in Blooming Grove. Burial was in the Dresden

Funeral services for O. W. (Bill) Hale, age 45 years, were held at the Dresden
Mehtodist church Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock with Rev. R. E. Couble, pastor of
the Pentecostal church of Corsicana conducting the rites. Burial was made in the
Dresden cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mamie Hale, Blooming Grove; one daughter, Mrs. D.
N. Allen, Corsicana; three sons, Bennie Earl, Billy Joe and Jimmy Don, Blooming
Grove; a step-son, Elgie McDonald, U. S. Army, El Paso; two sisters, Mrs. Hue
Middleton, Richland, and Mrs. Clyde Hadley, Blooming Grove; four brothers, Berry

BLOOMING GROVE, Navarro Co., Texas, May 9. - Dr. W.M. Ellis, 67, prominent
physician and civic leader here a quarter of a century, died at his home here

will be held here Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the First Methodist
Church, with burial in the Dresden

He was born in Mississippi, but came to Blooming Grove twenty-nine years ago.

A TRIBUTE TO THE LIFE OF DR. ELLIS
Greater love hath any man than
he layeth down his life for his brother. Such can truthfully be said
of Dr. William M. Ellis. Dr. Ellis was a graduate of Vanderbilt
University, having graduated with the class of 1890. After his
graduation he came to Texas to practice his chosen profession, that
of medicine. He came to Blooming Grove in 1903, where for 29 years
he gave himself, physically, mentally and spiritually to ministering
to the sick and suffering. And when medical skill failed and death
entered he was there to comfort you with tears of sympathy. It was
never too cold or dark or rained too hard for him to answer a call,
regardless of cast or creed, when he even knew there would be no
financial reward. He fulfilled the commandment to go forth preaching
the gospel and healing the sick. Healing the sick with medicine
and preaching by his life of service to his fellowman. Dr. Ellis was
an intensive and extensive reader. He was well posted on all topics
of the day. It was the privilege of this writer to know him for 26
years as friend and physician and knew him as the highest type of
Christian manhood. There was found a manuscript yellow with age on
his desk which, after reading, will give one a better index to his
lofty ideals This monologue which he oft repeated and always on New
Year's morning, is as follows: "The sun is just rising on the
morning of another day, the first day of a new year. What can I wish
that this day, this year, may bring to me nothing that will make the
world or others poorer nothing at the expense of other men. Just
those few things which in their coming do not stop with me, but
touch me rather as they pass and gather strength. Let me do my work
each day, and if the dark hours of depression overtake me, may I not
forget the Strength that comforted me in other times And may I still
remember the bright hours that found me walking over the silent
hills of my childhood, or dreaming on the margin of the quiet river,
when a light glowed within me. May I not forget that poverty and
riches are of the spirit. May I lift my eyes from the earth, and may
I not forget the beauties of the stars. Give me a few friends who
will love me for what I am. And when age and infirmity overtake me,
and I come not in sight of the castles of my dreams, teach me still
to be thankful for life and for times olden memories which are good
and sweet, and may the evening's twilight find me gentle still." Dr.
Ellis loved poetry and among those he best loved were Walt Whitman,
Shelly, Swinburn, and Keats. It seems fitting that the soul of his
great, good man should wing its flight back to his heavenly home in
the glad springtime when God's great cathedral was deco- rated with
leaf and flower, typical of the resurrection. There was a burnished
cross, lone and apart, There were candles ordered as a rhyme; But
all that I could think of was a heart Bidding its friends good-bye
at supper time. There was a splendid music And the roll of ardent
voices ‘Neath the shadowed dome; But all that I could think of Was a

DR. W. M. ELLIS DIED AT HIS HOME HERE SUNDAY
Blooming Grove was shocked Sunday afternoon as the news spread one to another
that Dr. W. M. Ellis was dead. He passed away at 5:20 o'clock Sunday afternoon
at his home on Hinkley street.
Dr. and Mrs. Ellis were at the shower at the Presbyterian church Thursday
evening of last week. He had a slight attack of angina pictoris, (heart failure)
while sitting in a car talking to Bill Crawford; this was followed quickly by
another attack causing him to fall. He made the statement that it would prove
fatal. He was taken home and Dr. Lowrey and Dr. Kelsey hastened to his aid. He
had another attack, and shortly another. He was perfectly rational up to the
last attack Sunday afternoon when his life was snuffed out and his soul went on
to meet loved ones gone on before. During the time of the first attack and the
hour of death his doctor friends stayed by his side. Dr.
Newton came from Corsicana, Dr. Matlock came from Frost, Dr. Baugh from Barry
and the doctors here in town were with him. Dr. Ellis was 67 years, 2 months and
11 days old. He is survived by his wife and three children by a former marriage.
The children are; K. V. Ellis, near Purdon; Bulah, wife of Randolph Patterson,
of Dallas; Mary, wife of Jeff Grady, of Blooming Grove. Three children are dead,
Hilda; Bonnie and Hazel, all from first marriage. His first wife was Miss Delia
Hinkle and they were married in Arkansas. Moving to Texas they settled at
Purdon, Navarro county. Later they moved to Blooming Grove. Dr. Ellis has
enjoyed a large practice for 25 years. His wife passed away after they moved
here. He was married the last time, Dec. 29, 1925 to Miss Ruby McSpadden, who
survives him.
Dr. Ellis was a native of Mississippi. His father was James M. Ellis, a highly
esteemed citizen, and his mother's maiden name was Nancy Stroud, a woman greatly
loved for her wonderful nature.
The funeral services were held at the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon. The
body lay in state from 1 to 3 in the afternoon at the church and an unbroken
line of friends viewed with teardimmed eyes the body, and long before the hour
for the service all the seats in the church were taken, all the aisles were
crowded. The ushers, Ditt McCormick and T. M. George, Jr., had to turn the
crowds back. Friends from all over county and from different parts of the state
came to see Dr. Ellis put away and heaps of flowers mantled the mound.
Rev. E. L. Jones read a familiar scripture: "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall
not want."
Rev. Forrest B. Williams led in prayer, after which "God's Tomorrow", a solo by
Grady Elms, was most beautiful.
Dr. C. C. Kelsey made a few remarks, stating: "I have known Dr. Ellis
28 years, and have never known one more willing to give his life for the comfort
of his fellowman."
Dr. E. B. Lowrey made a talk, testifying to the sacrificial life of this man,
his willing answer to those afflicted. His estimate of Dr. Ellis, "Most beloved
citizen of our community."
Dr. Newton of Corsicana being present, made a few remarks, in which he paid Dr.
Ellis a most fitting tribute, "A doctor well versed and imperiling his life for
others."
L. I. Griffin made a talk. Mr. Griffin made the statement that Dr.
Ellis was 100 per cent a well rounded, public spirited man. He looked upon Dr.
Ellis as one of the very useful men of the day, to be missed more than any other
man in this community.
G. H. Brown, superintendent of our schools, stated that it had been his pleasure
to know Dr. Ellis only five years, but the acquaintance had been pleasant and
that his (Mr. Brown's) life had been made richer and sweeter and his thoughts
loftier by having known Dr. Ellis. " I found Dr. Ellis," continued Mr. Brown, "a
friend of education, a friend of children, a lover of nature and an admirer of
flowers and all other objects showing the handiwork of God."
The choir sang sweetly, "Death is only a Dream," and Rev. Shuler closed the
services with a short rehearsal of Dr. Ellis' life, and dwelt for a while on the
beautiful nature of this good man. Bro. Shuler compared Dr. Ellis with Moses,
taking the position that both were intensely busy characters, engaged in worthy
efforts and neither were spared to complete their life's undertakings. Yet that
which they had accomplished would live as unfading monuments to their lives, and
that it was not intended that their work should be finished here on earth.
The funeral services were comforting, and the flowers offered by friends covered
the greater part of the space about the altar.
After the services at the church the hearse was followed by a long procession to
Dresden where interment took place in Dresden cemetery under the auspices of the
Masonic lodge.
Dr. Ellis was a man of even poise, well-balanced equilibrium. He was not only a
friend to education, a friend of the church and a friend of mankind, but he was
a friend to the newspaper. He appreciated the responsibility of an editor,
believing the pen mightier than the sword, and saw keenly the unlimited
opportunities for doing good at the finger tips of a cautiously directed press.
Dr. Ellis occasionally contributed articles to the paper, and readers always
relished a menu from his agile pen. Dr. Ellis, in the vicissitudes of life, lost
his hearing; at least his hearing became impaired, but he never let a sweet song
go by without getting some of it. He heard distinctly distress call and gave
audible ear to Masadonian messages: "Come." His eyesight likewise became
slightly dimmed by hard study, but he could always see with a keen eye the
beauty nestling upon the pedal of a rose, and what he lacked in seeing with the
natural eye, was made up in a clear mind-vision. He saw beauty in poetry, saw
pretty periods in well written prose. He loved nature loved the verdure along
the creek banks, and looked with admiring approval upon the exquisite charm of a
landscape.
Dr. Ellis not only loved home and his home-town, but he loved his country and
took an interest in his country's development and public affairs touching the
perpeturity of the home of the brave and the land of the free.
Dr. Ellis was a public benefactor, and his passing is almost a calamity to this
community.

Shall long keep his memory
Green in our souls.

Raleigh Youth Killed In Crash Blooming Grove Raymond
Hollingsworth, 21, of Raleigh, is dead and Horace Moore of Frost was
injured in an automobile accident on Highway 22 at Blooming Grove
about 7 o'clock Thursday evening. Both cars involved in the wreck
were badly damaged. Moore was given surgical attention at Blooming
Grove following the accident and then returned to his home in Frost.
The deceased is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Will Hollingsworth and is
survived by a sister, Mrs. Jack Keathley, Dresden, and other
relatives in addition to his parents, Hollingsworth was the
twenty-first victim of traffic accidents in Navarro county this
year. Funeral rites are planned at Dresden Saturday afternoon at 2
o'clock.

Funeral services for Raymond Hollingsworth, aged 20 years, who was
instantly killed in an automobile accident at Blooming Grove
Thursday, Nov. 24, were held from the Raleigh Baptist church
Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock with interment in the
Dresden
cemetery. The rites were conducted by Rev. Sykes, former pastor of
the church, assisted by Rev, D. P. Cagle of Frost and Rev. Allmon of
Dawson. Hollingsworth was an employe of the Whorton gin. Surviving
are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Will Hollingsworth; two sisters, Mrs.
Ruth Hudstead and Molly Jo Hollingsworth; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
J, O. Hollingsworth and Mrs. Josie Haynes, and other relatives.
Pallbearers were Gerald Pevehouse. Wayne Sheffield, Beauford
Armstrong, Roy Reed, Robert Warrington and Wendell Warren. Honorary
pallbearers were cousins.

MRS. SOL HODKIN BURIED THURSDAY
Funeral services for Mrs. Laura Frances Hodkin, age 70, who died Tuesday at
10:30 p.m., were held Thursday morning at 10 o'clock from the Methodist church
with Rev. J. W. Whitefield, pastor, assisted by Rev. Bain, Barry pastor,
officiating.
Mrs. Hodkin was born in Arkansas, but had lived in the Barry and Blooming Grove
communities for many years and was a long-time member of the Methodist church.
She was a loveable character and will be sorely missed by her family and her
many friends.
Pallbearers were Willie Bingham, Myatt Bingham, Mr. Scott, Drew Gillen, Porter
Johnson and H. S. Whorton.
Mrs. Hodkin is survived by her husband, Sol Hodkin; one daughter, Mrs. Otis
Varnell, of Barry; one son, Forrest Hodkin, Dallas, and one sister, Mrs. J. W.
Phillips, Blooming Grove.

AGED BLOOMING GROVE NATIVE WAS BURIED THERE ON WEDNESDAY
Jim Carroll, about 88 years, native and life-long resident of the western
section of Navarro county, died at his home near Bloom- ing Grove Tuesday night
at 8:30 o'clock. The funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock
from the family home with burial in the Dresden cemetery. “Uncle Jim" as he was
familiarly known in the western section of the county was justice of the peace
at Blooming Grove from a number of years and one one of his sons, Ben Carroll,
is justice of the peace at the present time. Another son, Roger Carroll, served
in the same office for a number of years. Carroll school district was named in
his honor and he was a leading and prominent citizen of that section of the
county for many years, Surviving are three sons, Ben Carroll, Blooming Grove; Ed
Carroll, Blooming Grove; and Roger Carroll, Bardwell; a daughter, Mrs. J. L.
Sewell; 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and other relatives. Nieces
and nephews residing in Corsicana include Sheriff Rufus Pevehouse, District
Clerk Doyle Pevehouse, Clarence Pevehouse and Mrs. Mary H. Sullenberger.

PIONEER CITIZEN DIED AT HIS HOME MONDAY
James T. Carroll, aged 87, died at his home, four miles south of town, Monday at
7 p.m., after a year's illness. The funeral service was held at the family home
Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. J. W. Whitefield, local Methodist
pastor, conducted the rites. Interment was made in the Dresden cemetery.
Squire Carroll was a member of one of the pioneer settlers of Texas. He was a
member of the Baptist church and was one of the leading citizens of this section
in political and civic affairs for a half century. "Uncle Jim" was a man of
strong convictions and a lovable character. For many years he served as justice
of the peace and in this capacity dealt out justice impartially and was held
high in the esteem of all who knew him. In the passing of this rugged pioneer of
the old South this community has lost a good friend and a good citizen.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. J. L. Sewell, of Blooming Grove; three sons, Ed
and Ben Carroll, Blooming Grove, and Roger A. Carroll, Bardwell.
Pallbearers were Ed Melton, Tom and Ab Pevehouse, Will Pevehouse, Tom Carroll
and Reuben Carroll.

Funeral Saturday
Funeral for Roy D. Grounds, Sr., was held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock in
First Baptist Church, Blooming Grove, and interment in Dresden
Cemetery followed. Ministers were Rev.
William F. Nolan of Corsicana and Rev.
F. E. Baughman of Dallas. The Church pastor, Rev. Ronnie L. Chesser was pianist
and Mrs. Chesser was vocalist.
Casket Bearers were W. E. (Bud) York, Earl McLain, Carl Daniel, Albert Bates,
Charles Summer and J.M. Johnson. McCormick Funeral Service directed.
Mr. Grounds was born in Mertens in 1902 and lived in Frost many years.
He had made his home in Shreveport. Louisiana, the past seven years, moving to
Corsicana only six weeks ago.
He was admitted to Memorial Hospital at 2 AM Tuesday suffering a heart attack
and died at 10:30 Thursday morning.
Survivors are his wife of Corsicana; sons, Preston of Dallas and Roy D. Jr. of
Sherman; 7 grandchildren; brothers, Robert and Reagan Grounds of Dresden and
Ralph Grounds of Hillsboro; sisters, Mrs. H. C. Dyer of Frost, Mrs. Newt Flovin
of Corsicana, Mrs. Stanford Green of Lancaster, Mrs. Albert Bates of Palmer, and

who died in St. Pauls Hospital,
Dallas, Friday morning. He had

attributed to heart attack.

Henry C. Hall, 64, Raleigh farmer, died in Memorial hospital Sunday
morning.

Hall was a native of the Carroll community southwest of Blooming
Grove.

Grove, and Clarence Hall, Purdon; a daughter, Mrs. Lucille Zabbia,
Dallas; two brothers, Jim Hall, Norfolk, Va., and Grover Hll,

Mc- Donald, aged 34 years, of San Antonio, who died Tuesday night following
injuries reported sustained at a labor temple Monday night, were held Thursday

Crash Kills Soldier
WACO, Texas - A Fort Hood soldier was killed Thursday in Bellmead, McClennan
County, when his car hit a school bus. Pvt. R.D. German, 21, of Blooming Grove,
Navarro County, sideswiped a school bus with his car, then struck another car.
No one in the bus or the other car was injured.

Navarro County Soldier Killed In Highway Crash
Funeral arrangements were incomplete Friday morning tor Pvt. R. D.
German, 21, Fort Hood, resident of near Frost, who was fatally
injured early Thursday in a
car-bus collision on Highway 31 east of Waco. He died in the James
Connally Air Force Base Hospital several hours after the accident,
according to reports from Waco.
His death was the 22nd traffic fatality in McLennan county this
year.
The soldier was en route back to his post at Fort Hood after
visiting his family who reside southeast of Frost.
The car in which German was riding, traveling in a westerly
direction, is reported to have sideswiped a school bus in Bellmead,
loaded with football players from
a Mexia school. The bus was driven by Betonio Freeman, 51, of Mexia,
State Highway Patrolmen Leonard Hancock and C. R. Baldridge,
reported following an investigation, and after the collision, the
German car collided head-on with a car driven by V. E. Hicks of
Mexia.
No others were injured.
The body will be returned to Frost by the McCormick Funeral Service.
Funeral services will be held at Frost with burial in the
Frost cemetery.
Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. G. German, two brothers,
Nelson and David German; three sisters, Maydell, Linda Lou and Dovie
Louise German, all of Frost; a grandfather, Robert Coffman, Aquilla,
and other relatives.
The soldier was born at Aquilla.

Frost Resident Overcome By Gas
Billy Dean Campbell, 22, of Frost was found dead in Morehead, Ky., Friday,
apparently overcome with gas, according to The Associated Press.
Campbell had returned to Morehead after spending Christmas with relatives in
Frost. He was employed by the Trojan Construction Company which is laying a
pipeline through that section.
The Associated Press Friday night said Mrs. C. A. Pevytoe, 23, at whose home
Campbell’s body was found, also was dead, and her husband was hospitalized. The
Pevytoe’s home is in McGee, Ark.
Surviving are Campbell’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ollie Campbell, Frost, and
several brothers, and sisters and other relatives. The father is employed by the
City of Frost.
The body will be returned to Frost for burial, but funeral arrangements were
incomplete Saturday morning.

SHOT FIVE TIMES
Tragedy Results from a Trivial Barter in Navarro County
Corsicana, Tex., Aug. 20. - At Blooming Grove, sixteen miles west of this city,
yesterday afternoon, H.T. Chipley, a blacksmith of that place, was shot five
times with a revolver and instantly killed, dying without speaking a word.
Chipley and others were in front of a livery stable talking at the time, Chipley
talking to a man named Mitchell about the size of Chipley, Mitchell saying:
"You are not as thick as a blueback spellingbook."
"No," said Chipley, "but I am from Arkansas, and it takes a hard man to ride
me."
This conversation was friendly. The words had hardly been spoken by Chipley when
shooting began, Chipley being shot five times as stated.
Immediately after the shooting James McCann, night watchman at the cotton
oilmill, surrendered himself to officers and last night was brought to Corsicana
in a hack and lodged in the county jail. His examining trial has been set for
tomorrow. Both Chipley and McCann were members of the same fraternity and
belonged to the same lodge.

Corsicana, Tex., Aug. 21 - The examining trial of James McCann, charged with the
killing of HlT. Chipley at Blooming Grove on Sunday Afternoon, which was to have
been heard today, has been postponed until some day next week, the exact date
not having been fixed.

CHARGED WITH MURDER
Examining Trial of James McCann Begun at Corsicana
Corsicana, Tex., Aug 29. - The examining trial of James McCann, charged with the
murder of H.T. Chiples, at Blooming Grove in this county, on Sunday, the 19th
instant, waas commenced before Justice Grantham in the city at 2 o'clock this
afternoon. The County Attorney is assisted by one of the leading legal firms in
the city in the prosecution, and the defendant is represented by strong counsel.
There are in attendance a large crowd of witnesses from Blooming Grove and the
examination will not be concluded before tomorrow.

McCann Released on Bond
Corsicana, Tex., Sept. 4 - The examining trial of James McCann, charged with the
murder of H.T. Chipley at Blooming Grove on Aug. 19, which was commenced before
Justice Grantham eight days ago, has at last been concluded. McCann was granted
bail in the sum of $5,000, and he made bond for that amount.

She was a retired nurses aide and a member of
Memorial Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly
and Wayne Cook of Fort Worth; a granddaughter, Kelly Cook, of Fort Worth; one
sister, Mrs. Ada Boulware of Roscoe; and a number of nieces and nephews.

seven months.
Born March 2, 1893 in Dawson, she had been a resident of
Italy since her marriage to Mr. Shaw, who preceded her in death in 1948.
She was organist for twenty-two years at First United
Methodist Church, where she was a member, pianist for thirty years for Italy
Lions Club, a director of the Farmer's Co-op Gin in Italy and a member of the
American
Legion Auxiliary. Mrs. Shaw was well known in Frost
where she visited friends often and played her organ on many occasions.
Funeral was at 10 a.m. July 7, at the U. M. Church with
Rev. Harold Rogers officiating. Burial was in
Dawson Cemetery.
Survivors are a sister, Mrs. Jim Davis of Waco, and a
nephew. George Davis of Lubbock.

Dallas hospital. She was born September 27, 1903 and had lived most of her life
in the Emmett and Mertens area. Her husband, Archie A. Omberg, preceded her in
death in 1966. Survivors include four sons, N.J. Omberg of Corsicana, Warren
G. Omberg and Max K. Omberg both of Fort Worth, and Roger K. Omberg of Houston;
one daughter, Joyce Hollingsworth of Hillsboro; 10 grandchildren; six

Halbert W. Keathley, 87, of Corsicana, died Monday at Twilight Home.

He was a native of Frost and had lived in Corsicana 50 years. He was a retired
agent for the Praetorian Life Insurance Company, a 50-year Mason and served in
the Navy during World War I. He was a member of the First United Methodist
Church.
Survivors include one son, Frank M. Keathley of Dallas; two grandsons, both of
Houston; three great grandchildren and two brothers, Charlie Keathley of
Corsicana and Forest Keathley of Los Angeles, California.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Sept. 26, in the
First Baptist Church for Mrs. Effie Gobbel, 86, a former BG resident who died
Saturday, Sept. 25, in Houston.
Services were conducted by the Rev. W. A. Corley, pastor
of the First Baptist Church, followed by burial in
Rose Hill Cemetery. Both
services were under the direction of Bradley Funeral Home of Blooming Grove.
Mrs. Gobbel had lived in the Blooming Grove area for 68
years before moving to Houston four years ago. She had been a member of the
First Baptist Church since 1931.
Survivors include one son, O. C. Gobbel of Porter; one
daughter, Miss Mary Gobbel of Houston; one grandson David Gobbel of Porter; and
a number of nieces and nephews.

83 year old Pascual Loredo Ferrer passed away last
Monday, May 30, 1983.
Mr. Ferrer lived near Barry, Texas and had been an area
farmer most of his life. He is survived by wife Cresencia Huerta Ferrer.
Six sons survive Mr. Ferrer, Pedro of Dallas, Baldomaro
of Blooming Grove, Fidel of Dallas, Richard of Corsicana, Henry of Dallas and
Richard M. of Barry.
Two daughters survive, both of Barry, Estafona and
Maricela Ferrer De Roja.
Three stepdaughters survive, 58 grandchildren and 53
great grandchildren.

Blooming Grove, Navarro Co., Texas, Oct. 20. - Notification of the death of
their son, Flight Officer Richard R. Massengale, 21, in the North Africa war
area Sept. 26, has been received from the War Department by Mr. and Mrs. R.R.
Massengale Sr.
Flight Officer Massengale, a graduate of the Blooming Grove High School,
received his primary air training at Santa Maria, Calif.; his basic at Minter
Field, Bakersfield, Calif., and his wings at Luke Field, Ariz., last Feb. 8.
Besides his parents, he is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Leta Smith, Ethel and
Nanette Coker, all of Dallas, and two brothers, Earl Coker of Blooming Grove and
L.D. Massengale of Dallas.

Richard Randolph Massengale, Jr.
Flight Officer Richard Massengale
Mr. and Mrs. R. R. Massengale received a message Monday from the War Department,
North African Area, telling them of the death of their son, Flight Officer,
Richard R. Massengale, Jr. who died Sept. 26th.
Richard enlisted in the service January 5, 1942 just prior to his 21st birthday.
He then went to Sheppard Field at Wichita Falls, from there he went to Portland,
Oregon, where he trained for six months. While there he joined the Air Corps and
was sent to Santa Anna, and Santa Maria, California, where he finished his
primary training September 26, 1942. He completed his basic training December 1,
1942, at Baker Field, California. He was then sent to Luke Field, Phoenix,
Arizona where he finished his advanced training February 5, 1943.
He was then stationed at Fort Myers, Fla. until he was assigned for over seas
duty, July 13, 1943. He was 22 years of age January 10, 1943.
Dick was born and reared at Blooming Grove. He attended Blooming Grove High
school, played football and basketball and took part in all other school
activities. He was a jolly-good all-around boy, and our hearts are deeply
grieved over his passing.
There is nothing that we can say or do to heal the broken hearts of his parents,
brothers and sisters. We can only assure them that they have our deepest
sympathy.

CORSICANA, Texas, March 27. - John M. Reid, 58, civic, business and financial
leader at Blooming Grove, died at his home in Blooming Grove Monday. He operated
a Blooming Grove drugstore many years.
A deacon in the Central Baptist Church, he had also served as Alderman and
member of the Blooming Grove School Board.
Funeral services will be held at Blooming Grove Tuesday with burial in
Rose Hill Cemetery. He had lived
in the West Navarro County town thirty-five years.
Surviving are his wife; a son, J. M.

Funeral Services For Dr. C. C. Kelsey Held Wednesday
A veil of sorrow hovered over our City and surrounding communities Sunday
afternoon as the word went around of the death of Dr. C. C. Kelsey, who died at
his home at 1:50 o'clock.
He was taken ill while at church shotly [sic] before noon, and departed this
life some two hours later. In his going this little city and surrounding
communities have lost their beloved physician, friend and citizen.
Truely Dr. Kelsey was a Christian gentleman, loyal to his church, and a true
friend to humanity. So many times did he willingly give his services without
expecting any compensation whatever. He served as Mayor, school trustee and
always took an active part in all civic enterprises.
Funeral Services were held at the Central Baptist Church Wednesday afternoon at
three o'clock, with his pastor, Rev. Robert Williams, assisted by Revs. Paul H.
Vercher of Waco, Greer of Sanger, and Miles of Hillsboro, conducting the Rites.
Pallbearers were; Hill Stubbs of Fort Worth; D. W. George of Tyler; Cooper Wiese
of Calvert; Dee Wills of Ennis; Jas. W. Fields, G. E. Ramsey Jr. and G. D.
Gillen of Blooming Grove.
Honorary Pallbearers were; Deacons of the Central Baptist church, local
druggists, men of Navarro County Medical Society, men of the Navarro County
Osteopathic Group, and close friends of the family.
THe choir was composed of George Massey, Mrs. Lawrence Ransom, of Corsicana; Dr.
Ed L. Evans, of Frost; Mrs. Hill Stubbs of Ft. Worth; Mrs. D. W. George of
Tyler; Mrs. R. S. High, Dr. J. J. Sheppard and G. A. Patterson, Blooming Grove.
Pianist was Mrs. G. A. Patterson. A special song, "God's Tomorrow," was rendered
by Mrs. Lawrence Ransom, of Corsicana.
Surviving are his wife, a daughter, Mrs. W. C. Wiese; a grandson, W. C. Wiese,
Jr. of Cameron; mother, Mrs. Addie Kelsey, Ottumwa, Iowa. five sisters, Mrs.
Wlll French, Fort Madison, Iowa; Mrs. Edith Hummill, Springfield Mo; Mrs. Roy
Hogan, Bonaparte Iowa; Miss Dorothy Kelsey, Ottumna [sic] Iowa; and Mrs. J. P.

A Tribute
One who looked long and deep into the real of human nature wrote; "A man is a
man when he can look beyond his surrounding to the far horizon with a profound
sense of his littleness in the vast scheme of things, and yet have faith, hope,
courage, which is the root of all virture [sic], When he knows that down in his
heart every man is as noble, as vile, as divine and as lonely as himself, and
seeks to know, to forgive and to love his fellow man."
Dr. Kelsey knew how to sympathize with men in their sorrow even in their sins.
He knew how to make friends and keep them, and above all how to keep friends
with himself. He knew how to be happy and high minded in his strenuous, busy
life spent wholly in service for others through many channels.
No voice of distress reached his ears in vain and no hand sought his aid without
response. He found good in every faith that helped man to lay hold of divine
things and see majestic meaning in life. Himself not aspiring to spectacular
leadership he was quick to accept wholesome suggestions, and readily gave
energy, encouragement and financial aid in bringing them useful culmination.
In his philsophy [sic] of life he could look into a wayside puddle and see
something beside mud, and into the face of the most forlorn fellow mortal and
see something besides sin. He knew how to pray, how to love, how to hope. He
kept faith with himself, with his fellow man, with his God; his hand a sword for
evil and in his heart a bit of song, glad to live but not afraid to die.
Dr. Calvin C. Kelsey was the only son of Sidney Dowling and Addie Kelsey of
Farming, Iowa. There he spent his boyhood, and acquired his High school
education. In college he received first a degree in medicine and later a Masters
degree in the principles of Osteopathy which he successfully practiced for many
years. Almost his entire professional life has been given to the people of
Blooming Grove and surrounding communities. Thirty five years! Who can count the
hours spent in helpful ministrations; the miles he traveled; the experiences of
cold, hunger and loss of sleep. Surely to him the test of loyalty, of love, of
respectability was the test of serving. Yet his professional life was but one
avenue of service. His place in the church cannot be filled. No other shoulder
can fit that vacant place at the wheel. But, remembering him, others will be
inspired to help and the wheel will turn in the progress Blooming Grove Churches
have undertaken for Christ. Other avenues he cherished were Civic imrovement,
education and wholesome athletics.
And now looking back over his life, we who know him intimately, see it as a
fabric, woven of bits of crimson and blue and yellow; the bright and dark spots
blending into harmony.
His faith and sincerity built the loom, his deeds and eperiences the bits of
color, and his God the Weaver, who can bring in to harmony any life submitted to
Him, and make of it an everlasting fabric.
His sincerity, just being himself a friend, perhaps more than his deeds, marked
his comradship with all who knew him. An overwhelming responce to his friendly,
helpful influence was expressed in so many floral offerings, which made the
church altar beautiful for the funeral service.
It was expressed in the large attendance at the service, many of them standing
outside the church while the service was broadcast to them. It is being
expressed in letters and telegrams, comforting the hearts of the bereaved ones.
His representative in Washington was not too busy to note his passing, and to
express his sympathy to the family, and to write of his loss at the breaking of
this earthly friendship tie.
Many from great distances came to stand by his casket a moment, and to see for
the last time the calm features of thier beloved friend. How valuable is
friendship.
Dr. Kelsey brought grace to dark and gloomy places, his faith brought joy when
he was tired, and he gave splendor to the life he lived. These thoughts of him
will remain in our hearts so long as memory lasts.

Mar. 11, 1873 - June 23, 1941
Veteran U.S. Army Sergeant Is Buried
HILLSBORO, Texas, June 25. - Veteran of thirty years service in the regular
Army, during which he campaigned in the Philippines and in France, Sergt. H.B.
(Bud) Lester, retired, of Hillsboro was buried after funeral services in
Blooming Grove. The Hillsboro American Legion and Masonic Lodge were in charge
of the rites.
Lester died in the veterans' hospital in Dallas.
While serving in the Philippines, Lester won a medal for valor. He was wounded
in France.

one sister, Mrs. Carrie Smith, Blooming Grove, Texas. Body to be forwarded to
Blooming Grove Tuesday for services and interment. Arrangements with the Lamar &

Henry B. "Bud" Lester
Funeral Services Held Tuesday For H. B. Lester
Funeral services for Henry Bascom Lester, aged 68 years, who died
Monday afternoon at 2:30 in the Veterans Hospital at Dallas, were
held Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Central Baptist church,
with Rev. Robert Williams, pastor of the church, conducting the
rites.
Mr. Lester was born March 11, 1873, in Georgia, moving to Texas when
a boy. He entered the services of his country in 1900, where he
spent the most of his life.
The American Legion Post of Hillsboro, of which he was a member, had
a service at the church, at the conclusion of which, the American
Flag was presented to the family. The Masonic Lodge of Hillsboro had
services at the grave. Mr. Lester was a Thirty-second Degree Mason.
He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Charlie Smith, Blooming Grove; a
brother-in-law, John L. Ballentine, Purdon; three nephews, Ray
Ballentine, Corpus Christi; Rex and Lawrence Smith, Dallas; one
niece, Miss Helen Ballentine, Ft. Worth and one grand-niece, Mrs.
Tommie Russell, Blooming Grove.
Interment was in the
Rose Hill Cemetery,
with the Mccormick Funeral Service in charge.
