WAS KILLED IN ARGONNE
Jesse B. Jones of Roane Met Death as He Went Over the Top

R. N. Jones of Roane has received the following letter from Lon Call, chaplain of the 39th Infantry, telling of the death of Mr. Jones' son, Jesse B. Jones:
3rd Bn., 39th Infantry, Feb. 5, 1919.
Mr. Dear Mr. Jones:
The Colonel has requested me to write to the nearest relatives of the soldiers of his command who were killed in action or to their emergency address.  Your name was given to me as the emergency address of Jesse B. Jones.
As near as I am able to determine from the facts at hand your son met his death in the following manner:
During the drive on the Argonne front your son was hit by a piece of shrapnel and killed instantly while going over the top with his comrades.
I know that it is hard for you to learn of the passing of one who was so dear to you and all of us who knew him regret that it was he who had to make the supreme sacrifice, yet he died a hero on the field of battle, fighting for his country.
it is to him and those like him that we owe the victory that we have gained and while we mourn his passing we cannot but rejoice that America gave to this war such a man as he.
He gave all he had and all we can do is to pledge ourselves to make the victory he secured for us permanent and worth while.
I hope that this may give you some of the information that you desire.
Sincerely yours.
LON CALL
Chaplain 3rd Bn., 39th Inf.

William Webster Brown
Aug 18, 1853 - Oct 17, 1900

THE LAMPASAS LEADER
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 1900

Obituary

Died on the 17th of Oct. 1900, at the home of his brother, Wallace Brown, Navarro county, Texas, W. W. Brown, of Lampasas, Texas.

W. W. Brown was born in Lauderdale county, Miss., Aug. 18, 1853; came to Texas in 1869 with his father, G. W. Brown and other relatives, and settled at Cryer Creek, Navarro county, where he grew to manhood. Was married to Miss Bettie Lee Fountain, Dec. 24, 1873, with whom he lived for 27 years very happily. Eleven children were born to them of whom only seven survive him. Three lie near him in his last resting place in the family burying ground, Cryer Creek cemetery. He professed a hope in Christ when young but did not join the church until two years before he died, after which he lived a consistent member to the last, but was seldom able to attend services as he was a great sufferer. He had gone to Navarro county to transact business but was taken down with fever and Hemorrhage of the lungs soon followed which soon ended in death. A few days before he died he was talking to a friend and expressed himself as being ready and willing to go, his only regret was leaving his family. A telegram was sent on the 15th of Oct. to his family, and on the 16th his sorrowing wife and baby girl reached him about two hours before he died, he was still conscious and spoke to his wife calling her name and then passed into a deep slumber from which he was never to awaken. He leaves three brothers, one sister and a host of relatives and friends to mourn with his deeply stricken wife and children in his early death. But we do not grieve as those who have no hope for we expect to meet him again. In the sweet by and by he will wake from that deep slumber, when all of us shall have put on immortality and we shall know each other there.

James Everett Owen
Apr 20, 1938 - Aug 24, 2010

James Everett Owen was born April 20, 1938 in Corsicana, Texas to William Everett Owen and Violet Moore Owen. He passed away peacefully on August 24, 2010 at Baylor Medical Center of Dallas with his family surrounding him. James was a lifelong resident of Corsicana, received salvation at the age of 9, and was raised in Northside Baptist Church where his father was a deacon. He joined and became an ordained deacon at Missionary Baptist Church after he met Patricia Clark, later marrying her in 1961. He has served in the same capacity at Northside since 1975.

James graduated from Corsicana High School in 1956 and served in the National Guard for 9 years. In 1957 he became employed with Paul Mitchell Hardware, where he worked for 15 years until purchasing the business in 1971. Having worked in retail sales for more than 40 years, he loved people and enjoyed helping meet their needs. Everyone who entered his doors was greeted with a hearty "Hello Neighbor! What can we do for you this fine day?" Upon leaving they were given a similar sendoff "You have made the day brighter, and the road easier to travel!" His passion was serving others in any capacity, with humility, and considered it a joy to help with any event involving family, friends, or the church. He was a man of high integrity and work ethic, loved the outdoors with fishing and hunting, and loved the game of 42. He instilled strong principles of honor to his family, and walked with God. James was one who always went the extra mile, out-worked anyone in the field, and could catch twice more fish standing right next to you.

In his retirement years, James became an active member and "cook" for the Gideon camp in Corsicana. He and his best sidekicks, Harold Lilly and Jim Roy Brown, raised one of the largest, healthiest gardens every year. They found their joy in distributing blessings of produce to many in the area. His faith was strong, and he was committed to seeing God's kingdom advanced.

He leaves behind a legacy to his wife of 49 years, Patricia; his daughter, Diana and husband Tim Campbell of Barry, his son Wayne and wife Rebekah Owen of Corsicana, grandchildren - Amy Callaway and husband Stan, Lauren Owen, Alyssa Campbell, Austin Campbell, Isaac Owen, Isabella Owen, Faith Owen, great-grand children - Thomas Callaway and Ainsley Callaway; brother, Billy and wife Sherry Owen, brother-in-law Franklin Carroll, uncle Royce and wife Willie Mae Owen, brother-in-law Kennith and wife Betty Clark, and a host of honored family and friends.

He will be joining in glory his parents, sister, Mildred Carroll, and grandson, Jacob Owen. James will be sorely missed, and forever held in our hearts as an honorable, caring, hardworking, and determined servant.

Visitation with the family will be 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at Corley Funeral Home. Services will be held at 10:30 AM on Thursday, August 26, 2010 at Northside Baptist Church with Dr. Rick Lamb and Bro. Lonnie Johnson officiating. Pallbearers are Jeff Nelson, Wayne Nelson, Ed Formby, Harold Lilly, Jim Roy Brown, Charlie Johnson, Jerold Kirk and Don Spence. Honorary Pallbearers are Wayne Allred, Howard Weempe, Leon Allard, Jim Henry, Byron Cook, Charlie Thomas, and the Deacons of Northside Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to the Northside Baptist Church Building Fund at 2800 N. Beaton, Corsicana, Texas 75110.

Mary Patricia "Patt" (Smith) McCauslin-Strain
Feb 20, 1944 - Aug 17, 2010

Mary Patricia “Patt” Smith Strain, age 66, of Corsicana, went to be with Our Lord on August 17, 2010, in Dallas, after a valiant struggle with pancreatic cancer. She was born February 20, 1944 at Sarasota Memorial Hospital to the now deceased Sanford “Ford” and Mae Kelly Smith of Nokomis, Florida.

Patt graduated from the Venice-Nokomis High School in Nokomis and attended Florida State University in Tallahassee. She faithfully attended Sunday school and later was an active member of the Methodist Youth Fellowship at the Venice-Nokomis Methodist Church. After moving to Corsicana, Patt attended Child Evangelism Fellowship Institute to enhance her ability to teach children and qualify her to teach the CEF Teacher Training Classes.

Patt and her husband were called to serve the Lord with their Puppet Ministry combined with CEF teaching principles, gospel songs, and the help of The Lord to give the gospel of Jesus Christ to the adult and child. Many children throughout the area and as far as the Ukraine have been touched with her gentle humor in presenting stories found in the Bible. She had a talent for simplifying the stories so that younger audiences could better comprehend the teachings of Christ.

Patt's last 20 summers have been filled with Vacation Bible Schools each week. Christmas was a time to present the meaning of Christmas using action filled puppet programs for the public schools with groups of 300 to 600 kids during the weeks before Christmas break. She also had weekly after-school Bible Clubs during the school year and has conducted Junior Church on Sundays at her home Church, Harvest Baptist Church in Waxahachie, Texas. Several area Churches have had Patt minister to the kids with puppets and Bible lessons when the adults were having revivals, mission conferences, and fellowship meetings.

A new star is now shining in the heavenly night sky.

She is survived by her husband, Harvey Strain of Corsicana; her sons, Lee McCauslin and wife Judi of Orlando, FL., Keith McCauslin of Charlotte, NC., and Scott McCauslin of Mesquite, TX.; stepson, Jonathan Alec Strain of Knoxville, TN.; and grandchildren, Kaylee of Orlando, FL., Brandi, Kyle and Sabrina of Charlotte, NC., and Macy of Mesquite, TX.; a sister, June Gurley and husband Allen of Nokomis, FL. Patt also considered Jeremy and Steven Glover as her grandchildren.

Visitation with the family will be 6:00 to 8:00 PM Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at Corley Funeral Home. Services will be 2:00 PM Thursday, August 26, 2010, at Corley Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Paul Shearin officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
