Frost disturbance has lasting repercussions
Loose dog begins fatal chain of events
By Janet Jacobs
Corsicana Daily Sun
A dispute over a loose dog on July 5 indirectly resulted in the
death of a Frost man on July 6 on Interstate 35 in Hill County.
Steven Jenson, 53, will have a graveside service at 2 p.m. Saturday
at Dresden Cemetery.
The incident began around 10 p.m. July 5 at the small apartment
complex on Minor Street in Frost.
Jesse, a three-year-old blue heeler mix, was loose outside the small
patio of the apartment Jenson shared with his platonic roommate
Peggy Sherbert.
Jesse already has a reputation in Frost as a sweet but “unruly” dog
who's been the subject of “umpteen” complaints to the small Frost
Police Department, according to Police Chief Jim Roberts Jr.
“It's jumped on people, and jumped on my patrol car twice,” he said.
Jenson and Sherbert had been warned about Frost's leash law, but
never ticketed.
On this particular evening, Sherbert admitted they just let Jesse
out without his chain to go to the bathroom before going to bed. She
claims she has a “prescription” for the dog, although that doesn’t
exempt him from Frost's leash law.
Here's where accounts start to diverge. Sherbert said Jesse got into
it with the neighbor's dog and the neighbor got in her truck and
drove off before returning and trying to hit Jenson and the dog.
After penning the dog, Jenson and Sherbert went out and confronted
the neighbor, Traicia Norrell. The neighbor told police Jenson and
Sherbert frightened her, and slapped her with a fly-swatter.
Sherbert said the woman attacked her and Jenson, and shoving her
over. The neighbor claims Sherbert tripped and fell. However,
whether she was pushed or tripped, Sherbert ended up on the ground,
bumping her head on the sidewalk.
Police Chief Roberts was off-duty that evening, but was called
because he lives nearby.
“The dispatcher told me a lady got hurt and the ambulance was
already dispatched and the sheriff's office was also on the way,”
Roberts said.
With the assistance of the sheriff's deputies, Roberts took
statements from Jenson, Sherbert and Norrell. With no objective
witnesses, it became a case of he-said, she-said.
In the end, and just to be fair, everyone got a ticket for
disorderly conduct.
“We took voluntary statements from the parties and wrote disorderly
conduct tickets,” Roberts said. “They can take it to the judge and
let him work it out.”
Jenson got one for disorderly conduct and for not having his dog on
a leash. Norrell got one for disorderly conduct and another because
she had an open container in the truck she’d just exited. Sherbert
also got one for disorderly conduct, but that came later.
Sherbert asked to be taken to Hillsboro Hospital, but was rerouted
to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco. After various tests and
some medication, Sherbert wanted to go home and called Jenson for a
ride. It was around 3 a.m. She told him to take her car because it
got better gas mileage. He was tired, but he agreed to come.
“He was a good-hearted man,” Sherbert said. “I wish now I hadn’t
called him.”
At one point, Jenson pulled over to throw up. It's unclear why he
was sick, but he was talking to Sherbert on his cell phone at the
time. After he got back on I-35, they continued talking.
“He said ‘uh oh, I ran over something,’” Sherbert related. “Then,
‘Peggy, your car,” and nothing. He didn’t act excited. He was real
calm.”
When they lost the connection, she tried calling Jenson back
repeatedly, but he didn’t answer.
Jenson had struck a torn up rubber tire, the refuse from an
18-wheeler, but it caused him to leave the road, then the car began
to flip, cartwheeling down the side of the road. Because he wasn’t
wearing a seatbelt, Jenson was ejected from the car.
An ambulance took him to the same hospital where Sherbert was. She
was sitting outside the emergency room in a wheelchair because the
air conditioning was too cold inside, she said. A chaplain took her
back inside, and had the unenviable task of telling her that Jenson
died.
Jesse, the dog, was in the car with Jenson. He survived but was
taken temporarily to the dog pound in Hillsboro. On Monday, Sherbert
was wandering around the apartment she shared with Jenson, trying to
determine how she was going to keep the rent up, and what to do with
his collection of hats. He’d worked as a carpenter and a farm hand
before being kicked in the knee by a cow. After that, he went on
disability support, which was enough for him to make half the rent
and electricity bills. He and Sherbert had been “best friends” for
seven years, she said.
Jesse was leaping around, still good-natured and unruly.
After discussing the situation with the sheriff and the district
attorney, Police Chief Roberts went back and gave Sherbert her
ticket.
“When you run across something like this there's no playbook on how
to handle it. You just try to handle it as best as possible,” he
said.
Jenson is survived by two sons and his parents.

A TRIBUTE OF RESPECT
The following words are written as a tribute of respect to the
memory of W. A. Crews. An Abundance of his life was given to the
profession of teaching school. This estimation of him is portrayed
through the eyes, the minds and hearts of his former pupils.
“Mr. Bert” as he was fondly known among his students was a Master.
He was fully equal to any occasion. He solved every problem with
precision. We stood in awe of his austere discipline, but bowed in
humble respect to the justice he measured, his kind consideration
for the rights of each of us.
Deep in his brilliant mind, was buried an intellect that was
surpassed by few men of the ages, in his heart was a deep well of
wisdom that crowned his personality. These qualities fell from his
lips in the eloquence of an orator, the understanding of a Sage, the
inspiration of a Patriot, that inspired and encouraged his
educational subjects to attain the higher things in life.
These beautiful traits of his character, were known only to his
intimates in the schoolroom. They were hidden from the public by a
modesty that was akin to shyness.
His ambition for our accomplishments, his interest in our welfare,
his advice for our good, his exemplification of an honorable life,
will ever live in the hearts of his former pupils as a thing of
beauty.

POPULAR CORSICANA WOMAN LAID TO REST IN OAKWOOD CEMETERY
Funeral services for Miss Hattie Kenner, aged 48 years, native of
Navarro county, who died at the home of her sister, Mrs. W. M.
Elliott, 749 West Second avenue Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock
after a short illness, were held from the Elliott residence Sunday
afternoon at 4 o’clock with interment in
Oakwood cemetery. The
services were conducted by Rev. P. Martin Baker, pastor of the Third
Avenue Presbyterian church.
Miss Kenner was recently elected president of the Navarro County
Chapter United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was the daughter of
Capt. and Mrs. W. N. Kenner and a granddaughter of Col. James N.
Riggs, one of the original town commissioners of Corsicana and
Navarro County. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Will Elliott,
Corsicana, and Mrs. James T. Green, Amarillo.

W. P. McCammon, Max D. Almond and Richard Mays.
A host of friends of deceased gathered at the Elliott home for the
funeral services and followed the remains to their last resting
place in Oakwood cemetery, the burial place which had received so
much care and attention at the hands of the deceased while she was
head of the Cemetery Association for so long. A profusion of
beautiful flowers covered the mound of her last resting place,
attesting her popularity and the love and esteem in which she was
held by those who knew and loved her best.
Notes:
Tribute Paid Miss Kenner
A beautiful tribute was paid the late Miss Hattie Kenner at
the joint memorial service at the Third Avenue Presbyterian Church
on Monday afternoon, when Mrs. J. Frank King, a life-long friend and
neighbor, spoke of Miss Kenner's participation in Nevin Club
activities through the years.
Miss Kenner was one of the Nevin Club's most enthusiastic and
efficient presidents during its twenty-nine years of activity in
Corsicana, having filled this office during 1907-1909. The
outstanding accomplishments of Miss Kenner's administration were the
presentation of Emilio De Gorgoza and Corinne Rider Kelsey,
nationally known artists, and the organization of a Nevin Chorus of
100 voices with Clarence Ashenden as director.
Mrs. King stated that she had heard Miss Kenner speak on the
beautiful voice of Maggie Lou Miller, who was a member of the Nevin
Chorus during her administration, and “who is now our Mrs. E. P.
Zinlke of whom we are proud.”
Miss Kenner began her musical education in Corsicana as a student of
piano with Mrs. Sue Castles, one of Corsicana's leading piano
teachers at that time. In later years, developing a lovely voice,
which she used unselfishly for the pleasure of her many friends and
loved ones. Several years ago, Miss Kenner had the pleasure of
taking an extensive course in voice at the New York School of Music
and Arts, under the tutelage of Ralph Sterner, noted teacher.
Miss Kenner's love for the art of music is beautifully expressed in
the words of the poet who said:
“Of all the arts beneath the Heaven,
That man has found or God has given,
None draws the soul so sweet away,
As music's melting, mystic lay.”

1845, coming from Tennessee.
In 1850, Colonel Riggs purchased and improved the property on West
Third avenue which has ever since been the family home. Colonel
Riggs was one of the original town commissioners for the laying out
of the city of Corsicana. He was a charter member of the original
Corsicana ‘Masonic Lodge, and later a member and Master of the
Corsicana Lodge No. 174. A. F. & A. M. He died in 1890.
Mrs. Kenner was an infant when her parents came to Corsicana. In
1868 she was married to Wynder N. Kenner, and resided at Old
Chatfield till 1884, and then returned to Corsicana. To this union
five daughters were born, one dying in infancy and another, Miss

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR PIONEER LADY SUNDAY AFTERNOON
GREAT CORTEGE FOLLOWS REMAINS MRS. W. N. KENNER TO OAKWOOD
With the gentle south wind tempering the heat of a summer day and
singing a requiem in the trees overhead the mortal remains of Mrs.
Lucinda Riggs Kenner, widow of the late W. N. Kenner, were laid at
rest late Sunday afternoon in
Oakwood cemetery, the beautiful City
of the Dead, which she had seen grow from a few struggling graves to
the great burying ground of the people of Corsicana during her
lifetime in this city and county of eighty well spent years. A great
concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends were present and paid
their last respects to a truly good woman and afterward heaped
beautiful and fragrant flowers on the mound as a last token of love
and esteem.
Funeral services were held at the home, 750 West Third avenue, at
which time the Rev. Ilion T. Jones, pastor of the Third Avenue
Presbyterian church, read an appropriate scripture passage and then
delivered a most eloquent and touching tribute to the memory of the
deceased, who had been a member of the Presbyterian church since her
girlhood days, and had held steadfast to the tenets which she
embraced at that time, and during all the long years of an active
and useful life her church and Christian duties were ever first in
her heart.
At the home and at the grave quartette composed of Mesdames P. C.
Townsend and J. S. Murchison and Messrs. Chris L. Knox and Edgar
Metcalf sang a number of old songs, some of them favorites of the
noble woman who had at last gone to her everlasting reward after
having labored so long in the vineyard of the Lord upon earth. The
services were concluded at the grave with a short but very touching
prayer by the Rev. Mr. Jones, and the large crowd, many of them
pioneer citizens of this section of the state, dispersed and went
their respective ways, carrying tender memories of the deceased with
them and saddened by the thought that they would no longer greet her
in the walks of men on earth, yet consoled by the realization that
she had gone to that home where there is never any pain nor sorrow,
nor any of the worries and troubles that beset the dwellers upon
this earth.
Mrs. Kenner was the daughter of Col. And Mrs. J. M. Riggs, and came
to Navarro county with her parents when she was not yet one year
old, in 1845, and had lived in Corsicana and Navarro during all the
intervening years. In 1868 she was married to Capt. W. N. Kenner and
the couple resided at “Old Chatfield” until 1884, when they returned
to Corsicana. Five daughters were born to this union, one dying in
early infancy and another, Miss Katherine passing away in 1914. The
three surviving daughters are Mr. J. T. Green of Amarillo and Mrs.
Wm. M. Elliott and Miss Hattie Kenner of Corsicana. Several
grandchildren and great grandchildren also survive, as well as Mrs.
Ruth Teas, a sister, who lives on a part of the old Riggs homestead,
next door to the Kenner home on West Third avenue, this property
having been purchased and improved by Col. Riggs in 1850,
seventy-five years ago, and five years after having come to this
place from Tennessee.
Mrs. Kenner became a member of the Presbyterian church here while
yet a young woman and held steadfast to her faith for all the years
that came and went in seemingly endless profusion. She was a devoted
Christian woman and ever kept her life unspotted from the world, and
was an inspiration to all who knew her for the pure and
self-sacrificing nature of her religion. She was a charter member of
the Navarro Chapter United Daughters of the Confederacy, and has
held numerous offices in that organization, and was ever a faithful
and efficient member, holding very dear the alms and objects of this
organization of noble women. She was indeed a good woman and will be
sorely missed by a large circle of friends and the citizenship in
general.
