ONE KILLED, ONE CRITICALLY HURT IN AUTO ACCIDENT

TWO MEN REPAIRING FLAT TIRE, WHEN STRUCK BY PASSING CAR

John Radney, aged 51 years, was instantly killed and Freeland Hard was seriously injured Wednesday night when they were struck by a passing automobile while fixing a flat tire on Highway 31 several miles east of Corsicana. Both men resided in the Rural Shade community.

According to J. M. Westbrook, deputy sheriff, who investigated the accident, the car which struck the men was driven by Andrew McClung of Kerens. The officer said the accident was unavoidable. It was stated that the two injured men had driven their car on the north side of the pavement as the tire to be repaired was on the right front wheel, leaving the wheel on the pavement with enough space to set the jack on the edge of the slab, rather than leave the entire car on the road. The rains had made the shoulders of the highway so soft that it was impossible to place a jack under the wheel off the slab.

The two men were rushed to Corsicana in a Corley ambulance. Reports from the P. and S. hospital Wednesday were that Hart was in a critical condition, suffering with both legs broken and other injuries.

It was reported that neither car was damaged extensively, indications showing that the cars barely touched.

Funeral arrangements had not been completed Thursday at noon for Radney, but it is expected that burial will be in the Dresden cemetery sometime Friday afternoon.

Mr. Radney was a native of Texas and had resided in Navarro county and Ellis counties during his entire life.

Surviving are three sons, John Radney, Jr., William Radney and George Doyle Radney, all of the Rural Shade community; a daughter, Mrs. Eva McCollum, Houston; six grandchildren, a brother, Charles Radney, Clarendon; two half-sisters, Mrs. Annie Howell, Kerens and M4s. Ella Perry, Kerens; and four half-brothers, Clyde Radney, Roe Radney and Floyd Radney, all of Houston; and Sam Radney, McCullough county.

The funeral will be directed by the Corley Funeral Home.

John Scarborough
abt. 1882 - Dec. 26, 1920

DIED IN JAPAN.
John Scarborough Was Reared in Navarro County.
Last night Judge Hawkins Scarborough received a cablegram from Unsankinko, Japan, saying that his brother, John Scarborough, had died on the 26th of December as the result of gas poisoning and was buried there. The cablegram bore the signature “Dettie”, which is the given name of the wife of the deceased. Judge Scarborough says the last letter that he had from his brother he said in it that the mine which he was superintending had taken fire but that it meant no danger to him. Judge Scarborough now thinks that his brother, possibly entered the mine and was overcome with gas.

John Scarborough was reared in this county. He graduated out of the Corsicana high school in 1901 and later attended and graduated from A.& M. college for five or six years he held a responsible lposition in the Corsicana post office. He was married here to Miss Hammett who survives him. He also leaves a three year-old son. He was thirty-eight years of age and has been in Japan for about eight years, during which time he has been with a mining company. His death will be deeply regretted here. He was a sturdy young man and had many friends.

Judge Scarborough has no further information than that contained in the cable, which he answered at once.

ARRIVES IN SAN FRANCISCO
Mrs. John Scarborough Is Returning From Korea
Mrs. John Scarborough has telegraphed her sister, Miss Sadie Hammett, that she arrived in San Francisco yesterday. After a few days rest Mrs. Scarborough will leave for Corsicana. It will be remembered that Mrs. Scarborough's husband died a few weeks ago in Korea from gas poisoning received while aiding in directing efforts to control a fire in a mine owned by the company with which he was a valued employee and had been for some time.

Notes:

DEATH RESULT OF MINE GAS POISONING
Details Given as to How John Scarborough Lost His Life

It will be remembered that about a month ago mention was made in these columns of a cablegram that Judge Hawkins Scarborough had received, stating that his brother, John Scarborough, had died in Uoson Kinko, Chosen, Japan on gas poisoning. John Scarborough was a Corsicana boy and his wife, who was formerly Miss Dettie Hammett, was a Corsicana girl and both have a host of friends here who were shocked at the terrible news and who have been anxiously awaiting the letter that would give some particulars of the sad accident. This week-en brought letters from Mrs. Scarborough and several families of each the details of John's death.
Worked in Korea.
Mrs. Scarborough (John as he was familiarly called) was in the employ of a gold mining company in Korea. His work did not take him into the mine, but for two months a fire had been burning in the mine and in the desperate effort to get it under control every available man in the employ of the company was put to work in the mine to fight it. They failed in their efforts to extinguish it but had just about completed some concrete bulk-heads or fire walls to trap it or confine it and prevent its spreading to other parts of the mine; all that remained to be done was to fill up some crack in the stone of some tunnels. It was in one of these tunnels that the accident occurred. The air was very bad in these tunnels and the men wore gas masks when working in them. They could not speak with these masks on but had arranged signals to be used if one of them should get in trouble. John and another man went into one of these narrow tunnels about six o’clock on the evening of December 26th, and had been working there for some twenty or thirty minutes when his companion heard a queer noise and turning, saw John fall. He caught him and in doing so dislodged his own gas mask and was so nearly over-come with gas himself that he had to rush out for air and help. His comrades quickly came in and in a very few minutes had John out and worked with him for several hours using the pulmotor, oxygen, and every other means to revive him but no sign of life ever came. He had encountered carbon monoxide, about three breaths of which will kill a person, and had died almost instantly. The masks were the best procurable but it supposed that his must have been in someway defective.
Was Very Popular.
His friends write that John was one of the most popular and best loved men over there and the little mining community is stunned over the blow that has come to them in the loss of him. All that loving hearts and hands could do was done but it was useless—he was gone and on the morning of December 28th, at eleven thirty o’clock, they laid him to rest in a little cemetery over there that is used for the burial of foreigners. The funeral services were conducted by a Methodist minister, a missionary, who lived about forty miles away.
Wife En Route Home.
A cablegram has been received from Mrs. Scarborough saying that she is en route home and will reach San Francisco February 25th. Her brother, W. A. Hammett, will meet her there and accompany her and her little three-year-old son home. The hearts of the whole community go out in sympathy to her in her sad bereavement, and not only to her but the aged parents and to the brother and sisters whose loved one sleeps in far-away Japan.

Thomas J. “Tom” Gaines
Oct 26, 1877 - Oct 22, 1919

In Memory of Mr. Tom Gaines.

On Wednesday October 22, 1919, death visited the home of Mr. A. J. Gaines and took from that home a dear son and brother.

Mr. Gaines was 42 years old and was loved by all who knew him. He was living happily with his loved ones when that dreaded disease blood poison entered his system and he took pneumonia. He was sick only a week and all was done for him that loving hands could do, but God saw best to take him from this sinful earth to that might city above.

Mr. Tom has made Chatfield his home for a number of years and has many friends to mourn his death.

He leaves a father, brother, and three sisters, all residing here, but one of his sisters, Mrs. Beulah Hughes of Munday, Texas.

May this dispensation of the Heavenly Father be sanctified to the good of the bereaved and the entire community.

Mourn not for them who calmly lie,
By God's own hand composed to rest.
For Hark! a voice from yonder sky
Proclaims them blest—supremely blest.
With them the toil and strife are o’er
Their labors end, their sorrows cease:
For they have gained the blissful shore
Where dwells serene, eternal peace.

Mourn not for them though like the flower
Just opening to the morning ray
Nipped by disease's cruel power,
They fell rom love's embrace away
Where breathes no chilled or tainted air.
Where falls no darkness of the tomb
They prove the loving Savior's fate
And blossom in immortal bloom.

Mourn not for those whose lives declare
That they have nobly borne their part.
For victory's golden crown they wear
Reserved for every faithful heart
They rest with glory wrapped around
immortals on the scrolls of fame
Their works their praises shall resound.
Their name –on everlasting name.

Drop the warm tear—for Jesus wept.
Sorrow shall find relief in tears,
But let no secret grief be kept
To waste the soul through nameless years.
They rest in hope their hallowed dust
Is notched and from the grave shall rise.
Earth shall restore his sacred trust
Made all immortal for the skies.

His body was laid to rest in the Chatfield cemetery on Thursday Oct. 23, 1919. His funeral was conducted by Rev. Patterson.

To those who are sad and mourn the departure of their loves ones, we would say, remember that earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal.

May the comforting influence of the Holy Spirit be with you in your affliction.

A FRIEND
