Otho Osborne Barnes
May 24, 1893 - Aug 26, 1916
A Correction.
In the Corsicana Semi-Weekly Light of August 29th, the statement
taken from Monday's Daily Sun in regard to the killing of Osborne
Barnes by C. G. Collins on August 26th, in Kerens, was in part
incorrect.
Instead of Barnes owing Collins $3., Collins’ brother (Robert) owed
Milton Wheeler, Barnes’ brother-in-law, $5.50, borrowed money. When
he (Wheeler) instead of Collins, went with troop D to join the
National Guard he turned the debt over to Barnes to collect to pay
him for board. Robert Collins acknowledged the debt and promised
both Barnes and Wheeler that he would pay the money to Barnes. In
further acknowledgement of the debt Robert Collins cut wood for
Barnes one-half day, paying 50 cents, thus reducing the debt to
$5.00.
The foregoing statement relates the origin of the trouble leading to
the tragedy of August 26th.
I, Charles Barnes, Osborn's father, do herby certify that I took no
part in said trouble except asked that the difference be settled
without further trouble.
Notes:
KILLED AT KERENS
Osborne Barnes Was Fatally Cut in Duel Saturday Evening.
From Monday's Daily.
Osborne Barnes, aged 22 years was killed and his father, Charles
Barnes was slightly cut by C. G. Collins, aged 18, late Saturday
evening at Kerens. Collins was immediately arrested by City Marshal
Walker and Constable Will Carroll and brought to this city.
The fight was caused by trouble of long standing. It was said that
the young Barnes owed a brother of Collins $3.00. When the National
Guard was called to the Mexican border, Collin's brother enlisted
and went with Troop D leaving word with his brother to collect the
debt. When Collins called on Barnes for the money, he was told that
Barnes had already arranged to pay the debt at a later date and that
he would not get the money then. A few hot words were passed ant the
parties separated.
Saturday evening about 6 o’clock Collins was in Jackson's Blacksmith
shop at Kerens with two of his brothers hitching their team to a
wagon preparatory to returning home, when Barnes and his father
entered the shop and the trouble was renewed. Young Barnes picked up
a breast-yoke to a wagon while his father procured a rasp that is
used to prepare horses’ feet to fit a shoe. C. G. Collins pulled out
his pocket knife and as Osborne Barnes struck at him he made one
wide slash with his knife, cutting Barnes’ abdomen open and
inflicting a slight wound in the abdomen of the elder Barnes.
Osborne died about 30 minutes later in Dr. Curry's office and
Charles Barnes was taken to his home where he is expected to
recover.
After being brought here, young Collins waived his examining trial
and was released on a bond of $2,000 to await the action of the
grand jury which meets in October. He returned to his home near
Kerens Saturday night.

Arrest in Connection Alexander Killing
Deputy Sheriff Warnell left this morning for Dustin, Oklahoma, on
orders from Sheriff Hays to bring back to Corsicana, E. L. Bridges,
arrested in the Oklahoma town in connection with the stabbing her
one the night of Friday, April 7, of Ed Alexander, age near 20, who
was taken to the hospital immediately after the affray and
subsequently died of the wounds.
According to statements at the hospital, Alexander did not reveal
the name of his assailant, but investigations on the part of
officials led to the arrest of Bridges.
Notes:
BRIDGES HELD IN COUNTY JAIL ON CHARGE OF MURDER
ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH DEATH OF ED ALEXANDER RECENTLY
E. L. Bridges, age near 35, whose residence is at Dustin, Oklahoma
was brought to Corsicana from that place today by Deputy Sheriff
Warnell and lodged in the county jail on a charge of murder in
connection with the stabbing on the night of April 7, of Ed,
Alexander, hospital from the effects of the wounds, age 18 who later
died at the Physician's and Surgeon's
From his cell in the county jail this afternoon. Bridges had no
statement to make as he had not discussed the case with his
attorneys.
Alexander was stabbed about 10:30 o’clock on the night of April 7,
in a house located at East Third avenue and North Tenth street. He
was taken immediately to the hospital and his wounds treated.
The injuries were not thought to be serious and Alexander made no
statement in connection with the affair. A few days later tetanus
developed and he was removed to a private ward, saying as he was
carried away, “I’ll soon be in my little grey box.” Before many
hours passed, death came and the case dropped into obscurity pending
an investigation by the grand jury.
Through, investigations of Police Chief Knight and Sheriff Hays,
Bridges was suspected of being connected with the case and his
subsequent arrest in Oklahoma followed.
Chief Knight first located Bridges in Houston but Bridges left that
city before the Houston officials could make the arrest. Having
ascertained the information that Bridges’ home was in Dustin,
Oklahoma, the officers in that city were informed that he was wanted
in Corsicana and the arrest followed.
The preliminary date has not been set, but will probably be called
soon.
If insufficient evidence is submitted in the preliminary to warrant
a murder charge, it is probable that it will be dropped and a
manslaughter charge substituted. Penalty usually inflicted on
conviction of manslaughter is from five to ten years of penal
servitude.
