Virginia (Thompson) Berry
Oct 7, 1922 - Jul 14, 2013
Virginia Thompson Berry went home to be with the Lord on July
14, 2013, surrounded by her children. She is preceded in death by
her husband, Dr. L.A. Berry, one sister and one brother. She is
survived by her four children, Bob Berry , Diana Fuchs , Suzan
Garland and Maria Ransone, and nine grandchildren Allison, Aimee,
Dayton, Natalie, Julia, Lauren, Brooke and Adam along with seven
great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Robert
Thompson and her sister Frances Dunaway.
Virginia was born to Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Thompson of Dawson, TX on
October 7, 1922. After high school and business college in Texas,
she went to work for the Dept. of the Army in Washington, DC. After
3 exciting years in Washington Virginia returned home to marry her
childhood friend and sweetheart L. A. Berry, and they moved to
Brooklyn, NY where she resumed work and L.A. entered the Navy before
the outbreak of WWII . After the War the family moved back to Texas
where L.A. completed his education and they started a family. While
teaching at the Univ. of Oklahoma L.A. was offered a job with the
State Department, (USAID Division) which gave the young family an
opportunity to live overseas in countries such as Guatemala,
Honduras, Bolivia and Brazil. They returned to the US in 1973 and
eventually retired in Temple Terrace where they lived for the last
40 years.
Virginia was a beautiful person both inside and out. She was in
possession of a sweet and gentle spirit, sharp wit and intuitive
mind. She was an adventurous traveler, avid reader and an excellent
cook. Her greatest asset being the loyalty and support she gave her
husband. Both Virginia and L.A. were passionate about current
affairs, collecting and refinishing antiques and gardening, but most
of all spending time with their children and extended family.
Virginia was loved and respected by her family, friends and
neighbors who will miss her dearly. She had 90 wonderful years. How
marvelous to consider all she had experienced during those 90 years
– all the changes, great and small, history-making events, and the
simple, countless moments that composed her life. What a tribute it
is, not merely that she had lived 90 years but how she lived them –
inspiring those around her and making each day count.
There will be a graveside service in Dawson, TX and the
Dawson Cemetery on July
27, 2013
She will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband and best friend
of 67 years, L.A. Berry.
Any donations in remembrance may be made to the Dawson Cemetery
Association PO box 126, Dawson, TX 75539
