FUNERAL SERVICES MONDAY AFTERNOON PIONEER

MRS. SARAH ALICE LEONARD DIED SUNDAY AFTER LONG ILLNESS

Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah Alice Leonard, aged 79 years, who died Sunday morning at 9:30 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Leonard, 421 West Collin street, were conducted Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock from the First Baptist church, of which denomination the deceased had been a member for over thirty years. The Rev. J. Howard Williams, pastor of the church was in charge of the services and burial was in Oakwood cemetery. Music for the funeral was rendered by the choir of the First Baptist church under the direction of Paul B. Harper.

Mrs. Leonard is survived by the following children: George Leonard, Corsicana: George Leonard, Corsicana; Ed Leonard, Amarillo; Mrs. L. Freeman, Proctor, Minn.; Mrs. D. A. Lumley, San Jose, Cal.; Mrs. Will Johnson, Powell; A. B. White, Eldorado, Texas; one sister, Mrs. J. T. Goodwin, Dallas, and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Chas. Allen, B. J. Derden, Dr. Albert B. Horn, N. C. Goodman, Norborne Champion, J. Y. Roberts, C. A. Middleton, J. I, Tucker and L. A. Wortham.

Mrs. Leonard was born in Pontatoc, Miss., May 18, 1847, moving from that State to Tennessee from which state at the age of eleven, she with her parents, came to Texas, settling in Navarro county near the present town of Cheneyboro and was married to G. F. Leonard,(now deceased) Dec. 20, 1874. Later the couple moved to Corsicana where they made their home for many years.

In the passing of Mrs. Leonard another pioneer resident of Corsicana and Navarro county has gone to her reward. The loss of a mother and grandmother has saddened the homes of the children and the church has lost a staunch member. It was through the fortitude and strength of character of women like Mrs. Leonard, coupled with that pioneer spirit and Christian motherhood that this great empire was built and a sturdy race has sprung. Their place cannot be filled but the memory of their works will live through the ages and their influence will be felt by other generations in the years to come. Their accomplishments will be an inspiration for the continuation of a great and Christian race of men and women who will continue the work started when they braved the gangers and hardships of settling a new and unknown country.

Mrs. Leonard had many friends throughout the city and county, all of whom were genuinely grieved to learn of her death and all will join in expressing sincere sympathy to the family in the loss of their mother.

The remains of this good woman were followed to their final resting place in Oakwood cemetery by a large concourse of sorrowing friends who had known and loved her in life, and the grave was hidden beneath a profusion of floral offerings that spoke silently but eloquently of the high esteem in which she was held.

MAN BURNED DEATH IN OIL FIELD NEAR MILDRED

FIRE UNDETERMINED ORIGIN ALSO CAUSED BIG PROPERTY LOSS

A. O. EDMONDS LOSES LIFE IN FIRE EARLY SUNDAY MORNING

Fire originating from an undetermined cause in the oil fields Saturday night took the life of A. O. Edmonds, 28 years old, oil field worker, and consumed about 2,400 barrels of crude oil, together with nine steel tanks.

The fire took place on the Pure Oil Companys R. D. Fleming lease between Mildred and Whitten about midnight or a short while later, Edmonds was working around the tanks and was thought to have been atop of one of them when a gigantic explosion tore the top off and set fire to the contents. The dead mans charred body was taken from the ruins about 5 o'clock Sunday morning after the fire had died down, and brought to the undertaking parlors of Bank Sutherland.

Funeral services for Edmonds will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon with burial in Oakwood Cemetery, Rev. Smith of the Pentecostal church will officiate. He is survived by his wife and a six months old baby; his father, three sisters and one brother. The father from Tulsa, Ok., and sister from Tulsa and one from Fort Worth arrived in Corsicana, and one sister and one brother are expected to arrive here from Missouri Tuesday morning.

Edmonds had been living in this section for the past three years, coming to the local oil fields from Mexia, where he worked during the oil boom before the Corsicana field was opened. The family lived in the oil fields.

Consumed in the fire were several 1,000barrel oil tanks, one 500 barrel tank and one 1,500 barrel tank. The flames could be seen from Corsicana and for quite a distance in all sections of the oil fields. No other person was injured, as Edmonds was working alone at the time of the accident. It is thought he was standing on the tank that caught first and was attempting to put out the fire when the accumulated gas from within exploded, throwing him high into the air. The body evidently dropped back into the flames, where It burned almost beyond recognition before being brought from the burning ruins several hours later.

CORSICANA WOMAN PASSED AWAY LAST NIGHT IN DALLAS

MRS. W. A. CHESTNUTT SUCCUMBS TO ILLNESS - FUNERAL TUESDAY

Mrs. W. A. Chestnutt, aged 68 years, passed away in Dallas Sunday night about 11 o'clock, where she was with her daughter, Mrs. Frank Cullinan, after an illness of several weeks. The remains arrived in Corsicana Monday afternoon at 3:45 o'clock and were taken to her late home, 1430 West Second avenue, from whence the funeral will take place Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock, with the Rev. Ilion T. Jones, pastor of the Third avenue Presbyterian church, of which deceased had been a life-long member officiating. Burial will be immediately afterward in Oakwood cemetery.

Mrs. Chestnutt is survived by her husband and two children, Mrs. Frank Cullinan of Dallas, and J. Ward Chestnutt of Wichita Falls. She is also survived by a brother, M. L. Barry of Del Rio and a sister Mrs. Dood Roseborough of Marshall.

Mrs. Chestnutt was formerly Miss Rachael Barry, the daughter of an old and aristocratic Southern family, and has lived in Navarro county and Corsicana for many years. She was born near Tehuacana Hills, and removed with her parents to the Old Dresden community when but a small child. After her marriage she removed to Corsicana and has resided here for many years, where she was known and loved by a large circle of friends.

Since early life she has been a member of the Presbyterian church, for many years of that time being a member of the Third Avenue Presbyterian Church of Corsicana. She was a good woman and many have been the expressions of sincere sorrow and deep regret of her passing away. She was not ostentatious in her good works, but went quietly about doing good wherever she found that her services would be of benefit to her fellow-beings.

Her closest friends did not know the extent of her ministrations to less fortunate in this world, and since her passing her good works are becoming known to a large extent by those whom she had befriended and succored during the hour of trial or need coming forward and making many of her good deeds known. Truly she was a Mother in Israel and there will not be found soon one who can effectively fill the place vacated by her in her church and community life, while the bereaved husband, daughter and son are heartbroken at the passing of their loved one, and the sympathy of the entire community goes out to them at this sad hour.

Mrs. S. C. Bagby, Editor.

Mrs. W. A. Chestnut.

The passing of Mrs. W. A. Chestnut on Sunday night at 11 o'clock in St. Paul's Sanitarium, Dallas, where she had been ill for some time, removes one of Corsicana's most beloved and useful women. Though she will not be with us again her beautiful spirit will radiate throughout the ages. She will be remembered, not only by her winsome personality but by her many acts of kindness and gentleness to all mankind - young, old, of high or low degree.

The sympathy of friends everywhere goes out to her devoted husband, to her beloved daughter, Mrs. Frank Cullinan and family of Dallas and son, Jerry Ward Chestnut and wife of Wichita Falls.

Sweetest memories will ever recur at the mention of the name of Mrs. Chestnut. Her life on earth will call for the rarest, richest reward heaven can bestow.

The throng of mourning friends and loved ones who attended the funeral from the home this afternoon at 3 o'clock, and the beautiful canopy of flowers under which she now rests in Oakwood attest the great love and esteem in which she was held.

A most beautiful and impressive service was said by her pastor, Rev. Ilion T. Jones of the Third Avenue Presbyterian church, and the singers, Ms. P. C. Townsend, Mrs. H. J. Robbins and Messrs. C. L. Knox and Edgar Metcalf, bespoke their hearts in the beautiful songs sung.

Besides her children, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cullinan and Mr. and Mrs. Jerry W. Chestnut of Wichita Falls, quite a number of Dallas relatives and friends attended the funeral as follows: Mr. Charles Barry, a nephew and wife; Mrs. T. W. Varnell, a niece, and her husband, Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Brown, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Proctor, Mrs. Fred Jones and Mrs. M. T. Lively.
