Oliver Ricard, Sr.
Dec 18, 1926 - Jan 15, 1977

Oliver Ricard Sr. killed as gunfire ends squabble

An argument involving a father, son and a neighbor ended Saturday evening with one man dead and two others in jail.

Oliver Ricard Sr., whose address is listed as 1307 S. 12th St. was dead on arrival at Memorial Hospital about 6:20 p.m. Saturday from two gunshot wounds to the chest.

Witnesses told Corsicana Police Detective Victor Freeze that Ricard's son and a neighbor were fighting at a residence at 117 E. 17th Ave. about 6 p.m. yesterday when the older Ricard intervened, pulling a pocket knife on the neighbor.

The neighbor then reportedly broke free from Ricard, pulling a .32 Caliber pistol from his pocket and shooting Ricard twice in the chest.

James "Jimmy" Hale
Aug 22, 1944 - Jul 14, 2022

James "Jimmy" Hale, 77 of Corsicana, went to be with his Lord and Savior with his loving wife by his side on July 14, 2022 in Dallas, Texas.
Jimmy was born on August 22, 1944 in Etta, Mississippi to Era Olera and Madison Doyle Hale. His parents were share-croppers and worked on the family farm in Northern Mississippi before moving to Memphis. Always the brother in charge, Jimmy was surrounded by his siblings Jan, Jack, John, Virginia Billy, Sherrie, Lillie Margaret and Martha Jane. Jimmy was very proud of his time working on the farm and loved sharing about the things he learned during that time.

Jimmy was drafted to the Army after high school, where he went to Panama for basic training. While in Panama he made the most of his time and learned Spanish that continued to benefit him throughout his life. He served two tours during the Vietnam War.
He and Mary Frances were married 40 years and raised their two children, Stephen and Susan Hale. He and Mary moved to Corsicana in 1998. Many years after Mary passed, Jimmy met Dustie. While they shared a bit of an age gap, they also shared many wonderful memories together over the last years of his life for too short of a time.
Jimmy worked for Orkin Pest Control in different capacities with the company and eventually purchased his own Orkin franchise in 1998.
Whether supporting local sporting teams, charities or national endeavors, Jimmy was always fully involved. As a member of First United Methodist Church of Corsicana he contributed to the Stained-Glass Window Restoration and Summer Vacation Bible School Series. He was politically active in promoting his industry (President of the Louisiana Pest Control Association) or political candidates the he thought were just and honest.
Jimmy was known for his sayings:
- You don't save for a rainy day; you save for an opportunity.
- You make all your money in buying.
- Think with the end in mind. Always get in the first hit.
In 2007 Jimmy purchased the Halbert House which started his legacy. Over the next 10 months he brought the house back to life, with the goal of restoring it to its original form, which created a lifelong love of restoring his adopted hometown. Over the past 15 years, Jimmy found the most joy out of restoring buildings in downtown. Jimmy is one of the forefathers of our award-winning downtown.
When Jimmy wasn't working or remodeling, he enjoyed playing poker with his friends and finding a casino to visit whenever he got a chance.
His favorite day had to be February 7, 2011, when Mary Sophia Bruce entered this world from who he had a tremendous love.
A caring, giving, visionary man, Jimmy leaves behind his loving wife Dustie Hale. Son Stephen Hale and wife Amy; Daughter Susan Hale Cooper; Grand-daughter Sophia Bruce; Sister Martha Jane Hale and Brother Billy and Newana Hale. He was preceded in death by his first wife Mary, brothers Jan Ledbetter, Jack Ledbetter and John Turner, Sisters Virginia Rose Sherrie Hale McCullar, Lillie Margaret Hale Haynes.
In Lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged in Jimmy's memory to the Corsicana Animal Shelter at 200 N. 12th St. Designated to the Animal Services Account Fund 294.
Friends and family are encouraged to gather for a time of visitation on Friday, July 22, 2022 from 4 to 6 in the evening at Corley Funeral Home. A service celebrating Jimmy's life will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2022 at 11 o'clock in the morning in the Magnolia Chapel at Corley Funeral Home. Burial will follow at New Woodbury Cemetery in Hillsboro.

Ted Alan Lockhart
Mar 29, 1961 - Jul 15, 2022

Ted Lockhart was born March 29, 1961 in Corsicana Texas to Marie and Wendell Lockhart.
Ted lived with his parents in Elm Flat in Kerens Texas. He passed away July 15, 2022 at Epic Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.
When he reached school age Ted was enrolled in Mexia State School.
Ted was born with Down's Syndrome, what some would call a disability. However, he possessed innate knowledge of the most important things in life. Ted was outgoing and never met a stranger. He was able to bestow unconditional love on all and gave the best hugs! He always wanted to be helpful and useful wherever he was. This was not for any reward or compensation for himself, but rather just because he cared. Also Ted was very resilient and resourceful. He had several different living arrangements throughout his lifetime from the Mexia State Home to group homes. Although he regularly spent time with his family , he had many adjustments in life and faced them all with a sweet steadfast spirit.  Ted was always fun to be around and, much like his mother, you never knew what he'd say in any situation, but you knew you'd come away with a good laugh! Ted loved all things Elvis, the Kerens Bobcats, sunglasses, cheeseburgers, fries, ice cream, apple pie and diet coke. He also loved the police force and was seldom seen without his badge on!
Ted was so fortunate to be welcomed into the host home of Rachel Jones and her family a few years ago. Rachel had been a part of Ted's care for more than 20 years in Corsicana. Ted's family will forever be grateful for her patience and loving care.
Ted is preceded in death by his parents, Wendell and Marie Lockhart and his beloved grandmother, Mama Johnson.
Ted is survived by his brother Kevin Lockhart and wife Kris; niece Lane Borrello and husband Kyle; nephew Todd Lockhart and great nieces and nephews Pierce Lockhart, Derek Lockhart, Evan Borrello and Leighton Borrello. Ted was also blessed with a special relationship with his sister-in-law (he called her his Girlfriend) Karla Macke, and cousins Gena Chandler and Darrell Meyer.
Corley's Funeral home will officiate graveside services Friday, July 22, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. at Resthaven Cemetery in Corsicana.

Roy Talmage "Talmage" Upchurch
Aug 9, 1930 - Jun 8, 2022

Roy "Talmage" Upchurch joined his Savior peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday June 8, 2022. Talmage spent his life serving the Lord, family and his community. He is survived by his wife, Naomi Upchurch; daughter, Sheree Sutton (Gary) and son, Brent Upchurch (Shawnna); grandchildren Jordan Sutton, Chelsea Sutton, Tyler Sutton, Dalton Upchurch and Delaney Upchurch; great-grandchildren Grace, Eden, Judah and Bjorn; and brother Billy Upchurch (Lydia). Talmage was born in the small community of Bazette, Texas, south of Dallas, in 1930. Upon high school graduating as valedictorian of his high school, he moved to the big city of Dallas to pursue his education and a career in music. He was a member of the Dudley M. Hughes Quartet performing regularly on the radio and TV. His love for music led him to take organ lessons from Naomi Faust, a beautiful and accomplished young piano and organ teacher. The two quickly fell in love and began a fairy tale romance and marriage of love, family, music, ministry and worship for the next 68 years. He held down numerous jobs while working his way through an undergraduate degree in Music and Education at Southern Methodist University and subsequently received his Masters in Administration from the University of North Texas. Talmage was an educator, minister and entrepreneur simultaneously. He served as the Minister of Music at Oak Cliff Assembly of God for over 35 years, while also becoming a DISD school principal, as well as being involved in the real estate business. He was an extraordinarily hard-working man yet had time to show love to all of those who crossed his path. He was the first up from the table to do the dishes, the first to arrive at his school, and was always prepared on time and ready for worship services. As a school principal, his teachers would proclaim that they worked harder for Mr. Upchurch than "any other" because he worked directly beside them to accomplish any and every task. From cleaning the school grounds to being the first to arrive, he set an example to be followed. Directing the church choir and ministering at the church along with his beloved Naomi were the center of their lives together, second only to his family. In the 60's, 70's and 80's, his choir was one of the very largest in Dallas producing multiple record albums and performing many Christmas and Easter presentations. As a DISD teacher he directed a number of musicals including The Music Man and Carousell, two of his favorites. He loved yard work and maintained his own 1-acre yard with beautiful flowers up until 90 years old. He was always smiling and enjoyed spending time with people. He greatly enjoyed playing board games and loved outdoor activities. He could still best all the young people in the family in a game of croquet until his 90th birthday. Talmage spent enormous amounts of meaningful time with his children and grandchildren. He, Naomi, Sheree and Brent enjoyed many summers traveling the U.S. in their pop-up camper trailer sightseeing, laughing and loving each other. His grandchildren were the absolute joy of his life, and he had plenty of time and energy to spend with them having taken early retirement from DISD. He would indulge Jordan, Chelsea, Tyler, Dalton and Delaney with any and every kind of imaginary game, board game or simply throwing balls around. He was at virtually every grandchild's sporting events or recitals (and many events for his great-grandchildren). And he always had time to pray and share his love for God with each child. Talmage Upchurch carried the heart of a pastor in every sense of the word. He loved and cared for "all" in his life through his faithful presence and listening ear, whether ministering in the church, leading choir and worship, teaching school, working as a principal, or serving in the Adult Sunday School Class of Dallas. He truly cared for people and lovingly led them towards God. His thoughtfulness and considerate, humble approach to life blessed and impacted all those whom he came into contact with, His faith and love were an encouragement to his entire family and to all who knew him. Funeral Service is 3 p.m. Friday, June 17, 2022 at Jaynes Memorial Chapel in Duncanville, Texas. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m.-3 p.m., prior to the service. Graveside will follow at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 18, 2022 at Prairie Point Cemetery in Bazette, Texas.

Carol Louise (Kilman) Turnbo
Oct 16, 1949 - Jul 14, 2022

Carol Louise Turnbo, 72, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2022, at home with her family in Corsicana, Texas.
Carol was born October 16, 1949, in Columbia, South Carolina. She graduated from Belton High School in Belton, Texas in 1968. She served her country in the U.S. Army Reserves in the 1970's. Carol married Donnie "Pappy" Turnbo March 31, 1978. In the late 80's, she moved with her husband and daughter to Corsicana. She later took on the role of Supervisor of Medical Records at Medical Arts Clinic which became Medical Associates of Corsicana, from which she retired after 25 years of service as Supervisor of Transcription. After the passing of her husband, she moved to Hemet, California to be nearer her sister Shirley. This past year, Carol returned home to Corsicana to live with her daughter Melissa and her family.
Carol was reserved and quiet but had a surprising and hidden sense of adventure. She loved to try new things like square dancing, zip lining, and going on cruises and traveling to new places. Mah Jong became a staple in her life that she played with enthusiasm. It wasn't just about the game, but also the sense of community. It helped her grow her personal circle of friends, and she relished in teaching others. There wasn't a Mah Jong themed trinket, jewelry, or accessory that she saw that she didn't buy. She also enjoyed crafts which ranged from plastic canvas, macram, cross stitch, and jewelry making. If you had the pleasure of knowing Carol, you had one of her handmade bracelets, earrings, or necklaces.
She was preceded in death by her father Leslie Vernon Kilman, Mother Lois Kathrine Kilman, brothers Michael Kilman and Leslie Kilman, sister Barbara Adsit, and husband Donnie "Pappy" Turnbo. May they welcome her in, ready to play the numerous card games as they did at every family gathering. She is survived by her children Stephanie Turnbo and Michael Cox of Los Angeles, California, Melissa Turnbo Fuller and Kevin Fuller of Corsicana, Texas; her grandchildren Sean Fuller, Emma Fuller and Sebastian Cox; her sister and brother-in-law Shirley and Jerry Etemadfar of Hemet, California, and her beloved dog Abby.
The family would like to thank Krystal and Amy with New Century Hospice for their care and compassion.
Memorial Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10 at Lone Star Cowboy Church and officiated by Pastor Charky Marquis.

Jerry D. Turner
Feb 14, 1942 - Jul 23, 2022

Jerry D. Turner lived eighty good years, ending on July 23, 2022. He was born in Ohio on February 14, 1942, to William Raymond Turner and Nellie Naomi Lanning, who preceded him in death. The family included two older brothers, James R. Turner and Larry R. Turner, and a younger sister, Jeanne Turner Earley. Jim, the eldest, died in 2009. The remaining siblings have remained close to one another.

The Turner family moved to Grove City, Pennsylvania, when Jerry was only three and the family home was there for many years. After Jerry began his university years in Pittsburgh, he met his future wife Gay Gardner on a blind date which led to their marriage on July 23, 1962, and the beginning of a wonderful family. Jerry's academic life continued in Pennsylvania for several years as he earned his MA at the University of Pittsburgh and taught English both there and at Behrend College in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Life in Texas began in 1968, as Jerry went to the University of Texas in Austin to receive his PhD. He continued teaching college English classes, mostly in literature, while there and later at Navarro College. The family, with sons David and Christopher, moved to Corsicana in 1974. It was several years later, while Jerry was teaching at Navarro College, that their daughter Jennifer was born.

Jerry often referred to the years of his birth and his rebirth, as he experienced a major shift in his life through a remarkable experience with God in Austin. That salvation experience changed his outlook on life and began his love for the Bible and for his savior Jesus Christ. From that point on, his main goal in life was to serve and please God. This is how most people who have known Jerry in these last fifty years will remember him. He had such love for God, for family and for friends!

In 1984, after training at Christ for the Nations in Dallas, Jerry was ordained as a minister of the gospel. He and Gay returned to Corsicana and continued the ministry at The Ark bookstore begun by John and Violet Dickson, who established the store's presence downtown. Jerry loved the opportunity to meet so many brothers and sisters in Christ and to help people select Bibles and Bible helps.

In addition to church ministry and The Ark, Jerry became involved with Christian education at Corsicana Christian Academy, serving on the board for several years. He also served several years on the board of the Hope Center, formerly Pro Life of Navarro County, another ministry that was extremely important to him. Jerry taught Bible classes for decades. People will remember him for these and many other reasons.

In addition to his two remaining siblings, Jerry is survived by his wife Gay. He was a loving father to son David and his wife Susan Turner; son Christopher and his wife Marsha Turner; and daughter Jennifer Turner and her partner Dan Luddy. Beloved grandchildren include Chris's children, Katie Turner and Michael Turner (wife Rose); Jennifer's children Bobby and Charlie Luddy; and several past and present step-grandchildren.

The family would like to express much gratitude for caregiving help toward the end of Jerry's life. We do appreciate the compassionate, excellent care provided by Home Helpers (Shepherd's Touch), The Village at Heritage Oaks, and New Century Hospice.

The funeral service for Jerry will be held at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home at 11:00 on Saturday, July 30th, officiated by his pastor Byron Ayers, Max Rash assisting. Visitation will be there from 6:00 to 8:00 on Friday evening, July 29th.
