Goolsby
Jan 16, 1872 - Aug 16, 1914
CORSICANA MERCHANT VICTIM OF GUNSHOT
W.P. GOOLSBY FOUND WITH BULLET THROUGH BODY
Grocer Who Started on Collecting Trip Never Reached Intended
Destination
Corsicana, Tex., Aug. 16. - W.P. Goolsby, a grocery merchant
here, was found at an early hour this morning in the City
Park with a bullet hole through his body near the heart.
About 9 o'clock Saturday night, Goolsby, who conducted a
family grocery on Frisco Avenue, in the northwestern section
of the city, left home, saying he was going to the home of
one of his customers to collect a bill which was due him.
As time passed and he did not return, his wife became
alarmed, and about
12 o'clock a searching party was formed to investigate his
whereabouts. The search continued until daybreak this
morning, when Goolsby's body was found near a bridge over a
ravine running through the park, Goolsby evidentkly having
gone through the park as a means of shortening he distance
to his destination.
There were signs of a struggle, where the body was found.
His watch, umbrella, knife and keys were found scattered
about the ground. A pistol was found about twelve feet from
the body with three chambers discharged, and persons living
in the vicinity heard three shots shortly after Goolsby left
home. He did not reach the place where he intended to
collect the bill. He had no money on his person when found
and it is not known if he had any money on his person when
he left home. Officers are working on the case.
Goolsby was about 50 years of age and leaves a widow and two
children - a grown son and a daughter about 15 years of age.

Alan
Lee Barber, Jr.
Aug 24, 1982 - May 18, 2022
IN
THE CARE OF
Kingwood Funeral Home
Alan Lee Barber, Jr. passed away unexpectedly at the
age of 39 in Houston, TX. Lee was born in Corsicana,
TX and attended Corsicana High School. His early
years were spent in Angus, TX out in nature,
fishing, camping and hunting with his cousin. Lee
looked forward to the annual McDonald family
reunions in South Padre Island and on the farm in
Whitesboro, TX. Coming from a large extended family
on both the Barber and McDonald sides, family was
very important to him. Lee loved baseball and grew
up playing youth baseball at Beebee Field and
attending Texas Ranger games. He continued playing
catcher for the Marine Military Academy and Kemper
Military School.
As an adult, Lee battled the demons of mental
illness and addiction, but even so, he had a
tremendous love and sense of loyalty to his family
and friends. He was a deep thinker and loved to read
and research about philosophy, religions, history,
and even how to fix a diesel truck. He also began
looking into his genealogy and loved learning about
his Irish and Scottish background. He battled to the
best of his ability the influence of voices,
depression and addiction until the end, and his
mother and sister loved him unconditionally. They
were blessed with the absolute best of Lee during
2020 and 2021. They cooked together, watched shows
together, played at the lake and laughed. Lee had
amazing conversations with friends and family about
how society needed to end the shame and stigma
placed on those who fight this disease. More people
would seek treatment if they felt more comfortable
talking about their struggles and triumphs. Last
spring, Lee made an independent decision to join the
Second Baptist Church, North Campus.
Lee was preceded in death by his father, Alan Lee
Barber, Sr; his grandparents, Raymond and Dealey
Barber; his grandfather, Jimmy Neil McDonald; uncles
Kenneth Barber and James Phillips; cousins Jason
Barber and Shane Barber.

Notes:
Madren Boyce "Buddy" Whatley
Oct 12, 1931 - Jan 22, 2017
Madren
Boyce Whatley, known as Boyce or Buddy to his
friends and family, left his earthly home in
Midlothian, Texas to his heavenly home on January
22, 2017. Buddy was born in a rural farmhouse on
October 12, 1931 to Willis Wilson Whatley and Ruby
Cleo Ray Whatley. After graduating from DeKalb High
School in 1949; Buddy attended and graduated from
Tyler Commercial College in 1950. There he met
fellow student Darline Rawson. After graduating
Buddy and Darline were married on December 15, 1951.
Shortly thereafter, Buddy was hired by General
Electric and the young couple moved to Dallas.
During their 65 years of marriage, Buddy and Darline
were blessed with the births of their four children.
They lived in Hurst Texas, Montclair California,
Phoenix Arizona and Midlothian Texas. After retiring
from General Electric, Buddy opened a marble shop
that he owned and operated until 2006. In 2001 he
was treated for a mild cognitive impairment and was
later diagnosed as having Alzheimer's disease. Buddy
liked to hunt, fish and "make mischief". As an
adolescent when he got into trouble, his twin sister
Joyce always came to his aid. He always said he "was
a lover, not a fighter". Buddy enjoyed all sports
-
even though he was too small to participate in most.
In high school, he tried out for the football team,
but he was so small that his mother had to alter his
well-used uniform to fit him and dyed it because it
was so faded. You can imagine how he stood out from
the other players - a tiny player in a brightly
colored uniform. At the time he weighed less than
100 pounds so the coach suggested that he would make
a better "water boy". But contrary to his earlier
statement, Buddy proved to be a real fighter. As a
young man in Tyler, Texas, Buddy entered the Golden
Gloves Boxing Tournament as a featherweight (less
than 126 pounds) even though he weighed considerably
less. He won the championship in 1953. Buddy's
fighting spirit was further exemplified by his
battle with Alzheimer's disease. Even though he
eventually lost the fight he battled relentlessly
for over 15 years. Madren Boyce (Buddy) Whatley is
survived by his wife, Darline Rawson Whatley, his
four children, Rhonda, Boyce, Jim and Kyle, his
grandchildren Jordan, Kelsie and Hayden, and his
twin sister, Joyce (Melba Joyce) Miller of
Weatherford , Texas as well as numerous nieces and
nephews. A Celebration of Life service will be held
at the Midlothian Funeral Home, 200 E Ave E,
Midlothian Texas on Saturday February 4th. Family
visitation will precede the service at 10:00 AM with
the memorial service to follow at 11:00 AM. In Lieu
of flowers a memorial donation may be made to the
Alzheimer's Association or the memorial fund at
First United Methodist Church, Midlothian, Texas. |

Marvin Wayne Price, Sr.
Sep 20, 1933 - Aug 6, 2024
Waxahachie
Marvin Wayne Price Sr. age 90 of Waxahachie went to
be with the Lord on Tuesday August 6th, 2024 at home
surrounded by his loving family. He was born
September 20th, 1933, in Sayre, Oklahoma to Clara
Powell and Lonzo Price. He married Iva Mae Moore on
January 31, 1953 in Corsicana, Texas. They were long
time members of Brown Street Church of Christ
formerly College Street. Iva passed away October
16th, 2006, after 53 years of marriage. Marvin met
Betty Burrow at church, and they became fast
friends. They married November 1, 2007, and he lived
the remainder of his years happily married to her.
In his late teens he went to work for his uncle
Frank Powell delivering Coca-Cola. Marvin later
worked at Groom Brothers Hardware Store in Pleasant
Grove. He started repairing small appliances and
lawn mowers which sparked his interest in repair
work. Marvin and Iva married shortly after that and
purchased a home in Pleasant Grove where he started
his own repair business, Southeast Service Company.
Groom Brothers Hardware store would still send him
business repairing lawn mowers, water cooler fans,
washers, dryers & air conditioning window units. He
would also prepare appliances to be shipped for 3
major moving companies. In 1972, after many years of
self-employment, Marvin moved his family to
Waxahachie and closed Southeast Service Company. He
then went to work for C & D Refrigeration. He worked
for them for approximately 12 years before returning
to self-employment reopening Southeast Service
Company repairing and installing central heating and
air conditioning units. He retired from Southeast
Service Company in 1992 and went to work part-time
for C.A. Wilson for a few years working in the shop
and picking up parts.
Marvin was one of the hardest working men we knew.
He had a passion for woodworking and spent a lot of
hours in his shop at home building and working on
projects for his family and friends.
If you knew Marvin, you knew of his unwavering love
and faith in the Lord. He was a man of honor and
integrity. He loved his family tremendously as they
were one of his greatest joys. He would spend hours
playing with his grandkids hauling them in the
bucket of his tractor and laying on the living room
floor letting them brush his hair, drawing and
putting stickers all over him.
In earlier years when his health permitted, he
enjoyed fishing and spent much of his free time in
his boat on a lake or sitting at one of his ponds
holding a rod & reel, usually with one or more of
his grandchildren. He also loved being outside
tending to his cattle and working around his
property.
He is survived by his wife Betty, Son Wayne Price &
wife Tammy of Hubbard, Texas, Daughter Donna Cooke
and husband Larry of Waxahachie, Texas, Stepson
Randy Burrow and wife Eva of Red Oak, Texas, 7
grandchildren- Lisa Price, Leslie Jennings (Wes)

years Iva Price; his parents; 2 sisters; 1
grandchild; 1 great grandchild.
The family would like to extend their deepest
appreciation and gratitude to the Brown Street
Church of Christ family for all their prayers, love
and support to our family, Marvin and Betty during

unwavering friendship with Marvin over the years and
the countless hours you have spent by his side
during his illness. He loved you and we will be
forever grateful to you. To Houston and Ann

featured in the class Senior Moments to Remember. He
continued his education at Southwest Texas
University in Austin.
Royce met Judy Tasker and soon the two were married
and lived in Austin. They moved back to Blooming
Grove where they had two children, James Casey and
Stephanie Ann. Royce worked at the Corsicana Daily
Sun and fell in love with the newspaper business.
The family moved to Mabank, Texas, where he owned
and operated Tri County News for many years. He
loved photography and made a hobby out of taking and
developing pictures that would be published in the
paper. He had a love for airplanes and learned to fly
at the Corsicana Municipal Airport. He lived in Ann
Arbor, Michigan briefly before returning to Texas
where he owned and operated a billiards store.
Royce loved people and always had a way of
connecting right away. He was incredibly charismaic
with very strong opinions and was not shy about
sharing them. He loved a good debate and always
wanted to understand other points of view and where
people were coming from. He genuinely enjoyed being
around people who could make him think, as much as
he enjoyed the opportunity to help someone else see
a different perspective. He had a way of being
challenging but remaining respectful at the same
same. Royce was the master of a good deal' and was
a think outside the box' type of person.
Royce loved his family and friends deeply, always
ready to lend an ear or help in any way that he
could. He loved traveling to Florida to visit his
son's family and to Colorado to visit his daughter's
family. He loved playing pool and a game of cards.
Over the years he was in many different leagues,
meeting many, many friends who grew to be family.
Royce never met a stranger and had a way of making
people laugh wherever he went. He was truly one of a
kind and will be missed more than words could ever
express.
Royce is preceded in death by his wife, Judy Haggard
and his parents, James Hunter and Mittie Louise
Haggard of Blooming Grove. Royce is survived by his
son Casey, his wife Holly; granddaughters, Lauren
and Megan of Sarasota, Florida; daughter Stephanie
Thompson, her husband Jake; granddaughters, Aubrie
and Anna of Fort Collins, Colorado; and his brother,
Rex Haggard of Dallas, Texas, niece, Kelly Amerson
of Corsicana, Texas; his sister, Robbie Derden, her
husband Gary, nephews, Shane, Chris & Cody Derden of
Blooming Gove, Texas, plus a multitude of extended
family that will miss him dearly.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, August
24th at Central Baptist Church, Blooming Grove,
Texas, followed by a celebration luncheon at the
Lion's Den to reminisce, share stories and connect.
We find comfort in knowing that Royce's legacy lives
on through the lessons he taught us, the love and
laughter he shared, and the memories we will cherish
forever. |

Joeanne Bartlett
Jun 9, 1952 - Jun 5, 2024
In loving memory of Zoeanne Bartlett, a radiant soul
whose warmth embraced all who crossed her path. On June
5, 2024, she peacefully departed this world, leaving
behind a symphony of kindness, resilience, and
unwavering love. Born in Corsicana, Texas, on June 9,
1952, Zoe's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with
threads of work, friendship, and boundless compassion.
Her days were filled with love, laughter, and cherished
memories.
As a dedicated Marketing Manager, Zoe poured her talents
into projects like chef luncheons, planning food expos
and golf tournaments, and expanding The Special Spirit
publication, leaving an indelible mark on Ben E. Keith
Company. She was known far and wide from Albuquerque to
Little Rock and Oklahoma City to Houston and left an
unforgettable mark on everyone she encountered. Her
warmth and genuine interest in others meant she never
met a stranger. Zoe paid meticulous attention to every
detail, whether it was for her coworkers or the valued
customers she served. But beyond her professional
achievements, it was her passion for church, art,
friends, and her beloved Louie that brought her the most
joy.
Zoe attended high school in Mesquite, Texas, and then
college at The University of Texas at Arlington working
her way to a BA is Fine Arts. Despite her initial
aversion to accounting, she always said that she didn't
like accounting, but she was good at it. She worked for
her stepfather in his private practice for a number of
years.
Married twice and divorced twice, Zoe never had children
of her own. However, her love extended to her two
stepchildren Tiffany and Dan, whom she cherished deeply.
Recently reconnected, these bonds brought her immense
joy.
Zoe's smile could light up any room, and her wisdom
flowed freely. Whether discussing her passion for art or
recounting Ben E. Keith's history, she was a wellspring
of knowledge. Ask her about people or events, and she'd
recall them effortlessly, her laughter echoing through
the room. She never hoarded secret jokes; instead, she
shared them generously, inviting others to join in the
merriment.
She was an active member of the Women at the Well
community group, faithfully attending church whenever
her health permitted. When she couldn't be there in
person, she tuned in to the online services. Her
cherished "church ladies" became part of the close-knit
"framily" Zoe embraced throughout her life. Whether
among her church friends or colleagues at Ben E. Keith,
