Romulus Augusta Steele was born on April 5, 1838 in Bibb County, Alabama to Robert Steele and Rachel Duggan. He had a sister named Amanda and three brothers, named: Richard, Oliver, and Robert Steele. Romulus married Martha Elizabeth Mitchell in 1858, Bienville Parish, Louisiana. They had eight children:

Thomas, Jane, Augusta, William, Mary, Willie, Sally,and David. Martha died 1876. He married Sarah Emily Fitzgerald in 1878 in Anderson County, Texas.

They had four children together. It was a second marriage for both.

Their children were named: George, Oliver, Edward, and Lucy.

He served as a 2^nd Lieutenant of Company I 51^st Regiment Alabama, Partisan Rangers. He resigned from his command January 15, 1863 while serving in Mulberry, Tennessee. By the 1880 Census, he and his family was found living in Navarro County, TX (pg.388). Romulus Steele died May 01,1908 and is buried in the Midway Cemetery, in Midway, Navarro County, Texas.
