O. S. Bryson Jr. O. S. Bryson Jr., 78, of Trinidad passed away Monday, June 17, 2002, at his residence. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home. Graveside services will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery. Mr. Bryson was born May 11, 1924 in Corsicana to Orlan Bryson Sr. and Viola Parrish Bryson. He was a welder. Zora Dorothy (Rogers) Butler  Sep 14, 1873 - Dec 20, 1950 Mrs. J. H. Butler Rites Thursday Mrs. J. H. Butler, 77, native of Alabama and a pioneer resident of Ennis, was found dead in bed at her home, 510 West Tyler Street, Wednesday morning. Death was attributed to a heart attack. Mrs. Butler, formerly, Zora Dorothy Rogers, was born Sept. 14, 1873 in Montgomery, Ala. She came to Texas with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Rogers, when she was a child. The family settled in Chatfield where her parents died years ago. She was married in Chatfield July 26, 1893 to J. H. Butler. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Butler lived in Chatfield and Rice until they moved to Ennis in 1915. Mr. Butler died here Sept. 2, 1932. J. A. Lindle of San Angelo; Mrs. William Stubbs of Victoria, and Mrs. T. J. Farrar of Ennis; one son, Claude Butler of Dallas; 11 grandchildren and 5 great grand-daughters; also a brother, J. O. Rogers of Corsicana, survives. Mrs. Butler had been a member of the First Methodist Church since early childhood. She was member of the Dorcas Sunday School Class of the First Methodist Church. Funeral services are to be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon in the Keever chapel with the Rev. Jackson C. Oglesby, pastor of the First Methodist Church officiating. Letha Ethel (Rogers) Braddock Mar 3, 1898 - Aug 30, 1979 BRADDOCK The funeral service for Mrs. Ethel Braddock, 81, was held at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Leonard Radde, pastor of the church officiating, under the direction of the J. E. Keever Mortuary. Interment was in the Rice Cemetery with her grandsons serving as pallbearers: Mike Perry, of Ennis, Steve McQuarry, of Kerens, Michael Braddock of Palestine, Roy Goldsmith of Cooper, Steve Braddock of Ennis, Russell Braddock of South Lake, and Eric Nunn of Arlington. Honorary pallbearers were Ricky Braddock of Ennis, Roger Braddock of Rice, Paul Nunn, Shawn Nunn, both of Arlington, Kevin Oates of Howe, David Perry of Hollywood, California, and Gene Goldsmith. Mrs. Braddock died on Thursday morning in the Ennis Nursing Home after a long illness. She was born March 3, 1898 in Navarro County, the daughter of Johnie and Epsy Louisa Butler Rogers. She was reared in Navarro County and September 10, 1916 was married to Stephen F. Braddock of Navarro County. After their marriage they lived in the Rice community where Mr. Braddock died in 1950. In 1952 Mrs. Braddock moved to Ennis. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a member of the Johnson Class, and the Winnie Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star No. 160. Surviving her are seven daughters, Mrs. D. J. Bennett, Mrs. Curtis Perry, both of Ennis, Mrs. Harlen McQuarry of Kerens, Mrs Vancel Goldsmith of Cooper, Mrs. Billy W. Turner, Mrs. J. T. Nunn Jr. both of Arlington, and Mrs. Don Bradshaw of Howe; five sons, Johnie S. Braddock of Palestine, Gene Braddock of Rice, Glyn Braddock of South Lake, Rex Braddock, and Grover Braddock, both of Arlington; thirty four grandchildren; twenty six great grandchildren; one sister Mrs. Joe E. Adams of Houston, and two brothers, Johnie Rogers of Crane, and Melton Rogers of Odessa. Notes:
James W. Ailshie James W. Ailshie, 73, of Corsicana passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2002 in Corsicana. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at St. John Episcopal Church with the Rev. Dennis Smart officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 6-8 p.m. Mr. Ailshie was born Nov. 16, 1928, in Dallas. He was a member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Arlington and worked as a salesman in the paint industry for a number of years. Survivors include his wife, Jo Ann Ailshie of Corsicana; son, Gordan Ailshie of Arlington; daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Glenn Sodd of Corsicana; brother, Cecil Ailshie of Arlington; sister, Flo Rutter of Dallas; and grandchildren, Jason Sodd and wife Ellen, Jody Sodd McSpadden and husband Chris, Jourdan Sodd and Hayley Ailshie. Charlsie Jordan, 80, of Dawson died Wednesday, June 19, 2002 at a Dallas hospital. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Dawson Cemetery with the Rev. Brad Brittain officiating. Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Wade Funeral Home of Hubbard. She was born May 24, 1922 in Dawson. She was raised in Dawson but had lived in Austin and Waco for many years before moving back to Dawson in 1981. She worked as an audit clerk for Southwestern Bell for 37 years and was a member of the Pioneer Club of Southwestern Bell and was a board member of the Dawson Housing Authority. She enjoyed playing cards and 42, dancing and gardening. She was a Methodist. Mrs. Jordan was preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Annie Taylor Jordan; and a sister, Nellie E. Jordan. Survivors include sisters, Callie Roloff of Dawson and Ruby Lawrence of Dawson; nieces, Nancy Houck of Corsicana, Janice Chambers of Duncanville and Beverly Thompson of Waxahachie; nephew, Ronnie Lawrence of Corsicana; numerous great nieces and nephews; and special friends, Imogene Parnell of Dawson and Brenda Boenish of Dallas. Lynn Sanders III, 54, of Corsicana passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2002 at Navarro Regional Hospital after a long, courageous fight against cancer. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. B. F. Risinger officiating, who was a good friend of many years. Honorary pallbearers will be John B. Stroud, C. C. Curington III, C. L. Brown III, Dr. C. David Campbell, Vicki Payne, Don Tekell, Patricia J. Stanley, Anthony J. Shimps, Embry S. Ferguson, Bill Middleton of Dallas and Jeff Scribner of Henderson. Mr. Sanders was born Oct. 25, 1947 in Corsicana to Mr. and Mrs. B. L. Sanders Jr. He was a graduate of Corsicana High School, Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo., and Southwestern School of Banking at Southern Methodist University. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. In 1975, he married Marcia Lynn Gilchrist of Loveland, Colo. He was vice president and trust officer at Citizens National Bank. He was involved in civic leadership roles in the YMCA, Navarro Community Foundation, United Way Budget Committee, Garrity Charity Association, Navarro County Rotary Club, Corsicana Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, Palace Theater Restoration Committee, Corsicana Public Library, NCARC, MHMR, PRIDE, and Christmas in April. He was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church. He was a talented photographer who spent most of his free time, camera in hand, revisiting his favorite sites in the U.S. National Parks. He was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his wife, Marcia Sanders of Corsicana; mother, Mary Love Sanders of Corsicana; brother, Ted Sanders and wife Jane of Austin and their three sons and granddaughter; mother-in-law, Sally S. Gilchrist of Loveland, Colo.; sister-in-law, Elizabeth G. Coco and family of Boston, Mass.; brothers-in-law, Michael H. Gilchrist and family of Belleville, Ill. and Scot S. Arrangements by Corley Funeral Home. ---- 6/22/2002 Purdon man killed in wreck From Staff Reports A Purdon man was killed Friday in a collision with another vehicle on Farm-to-Market Road 709. Clark R. Berry, 49, was killed in the wreck, which happened about 1:24 p.m. Friday, according to a report from the Texas Highway Patrol. Another man, Tony L. Betts, 40, of Corsicana was injured in the wreck. Both men were reportedly wearing their seat belts. The report states that Berry was westbound on FM 709, about 7/10 of a mile east of FM 642 -- the road on which he is reported to have lived -- at the time of the wreck. Betts' vehicle, a 2001 Ford F350, was headed eastbound when it straddled over the center stripe. Berry began to brake and skidded, striking the front of Betts' vehicle. Betts pulled the deceased Berry from his vehicle, which, along with his own vehicle, completely burned. Navarro County Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Wanda Hartley held the inquest around 2:10 p.m. and ordered an autopsy. Berry's body was taken to the Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas. Funeral services for Berry are pending with Corley Funeral Home of Corsicana. Betts was taken to Navarro Regional Hospital by East Texas EMS in fair condition with a possible ankle fracture. The investigation into the wreck is ongoing. The wreck was investigated at the scene by Cpl. L. B. Allison, who was assisted by Trooper Dane Baker, Sgt. Kenneth Authier, Corsicana Police Department, the Navarro County Sheriff's Office, East Texas EMS, the Corsicana Fire Department and the Corbet-Oak Valley and Pursley volunteer fire departments. Survivors include his wife, Peggy W. Arrangements by Scott Funeral Home. ----------------- Clyde Earl Modesty Clyde Earl Modesty was born on January 8, 1938, in Navarro County, Texas to the parentage of Clemmie Modesty and Verna Lawrence Modesty. Both preceeded him in death. At an early age, he united with the Ebenezer Baptist Church of Powell, Texas. On June 25, 1960, he married his lifetime sweetheart, Peggy Ann Wright of Powell, Texas. Clyde expired on Friday, June 21, 2002. Clyde received his formal education in the Powell Elementary School, Powell, Texas, and graduated from Park High School in Kerens, Texas. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and retired after a 231/2 year career. Upon retirement from the Air Force, Clyde embarked upon a new career in the field of aviation which he loved so well. He worked for Austin Aero for a number of years and retired from Signature Flight Support in March 2000. His extensive career in aviation afforded him the privilege to meet! m! any people as well as allowed them the opportunity to know ``Clyde.'' For, to know him was to love him, and no truer friend was there than Clyde. Among those whom he came to know and who became a part of his wide circle of friends were then Texas Governor, George W. Bush and former Air Force comrade, current Texas Governor, Rick Perry. He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 42 years, Peggy Wright Modesty; sons, Ronald Kelvin Modesty (Nidia) and Melvin Andre' Modesty (Summer); grandson, Bryce Andrew Modesty, all of Austin, Texas; granddaughter, Cidney Michelle Modesty of Houston, Texas; uncle, Lewis Daniel Lawrence Sr. (L. Helen Grimmett Sanders, 78, of San Antonio and formerly of Barry, passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2002 at Silver Creek Manor Retirement Home in San Antonio following an extended illness. Mrs. Sanders graduated from Barry High School in 1941 and joined the World War II effort assembling the P-51 Mustang at its North American Aviation facility in Arlington. She was among the many "Rosie the Rivetors" who contributed to the war workforce. Following her war effort, she joined Southwest Bell in Dallas from which she retired in 1984 after serving that company for 35 years. In 1993, she moved to San Antonio and for the past several months had resided at Timberhill Villa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton Sanders, a Dallas-area home builder, in 1992; and parents, James D. "Jim" and Grace Grimmett. Billy Joe Moore Billy Joe Moore, 71, passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2002 at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Keever Chapel with the Rev. Joe Dwinnell and the Rev. Richard Moody officiating. Interment will follow at Birdston Cemetery. Mr. Moore was born Feb. 10, 1931 in Ennis to Thomas O. and Alma Toal Moore. He was raised in Ennis and was a 1949 graduate of Ennis High School. In 1951, he entered the U.S. Army, and served in an engineering intelligence unit with training in Washington, D.C. prior to serving in Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1954. He then attended Navarro Junior College, earning an associate degree. He attended Southern Methodist University, graduating in 1959 with a bachelor of laws, later juris doctor. He married Lynita Meador Sept. 7, 1957. After their marriage they lived in Richardson, moving to Ennis in 1959 when he opened his law business. After retiring from Moore, McCarty, Wilson and Mash, he remained associated with the law firm in an "of counsel" position. He was then active in real estate sales and management with Henry S. Miller Company and SPG International until 1981. He then continued his real estate work and ranching with Moore Properties and was a counselor for Rosewood Corporation in Dallas. He was president of the Ellis County Bar Association in 1962, 1965 and 1966, president of Central Texas Bar Association in 1965 and 1966, director of the State Junior Bar of Texas, Sixth Congressional District from 1961 to 1962, secretary-treasurer of the State Junior Bar of Texas in 1963, nominee vice president of the State Junior Bar of Texas in 1964, member of the State Bar of Texas Grievance Committee, Sixth Congressional District for numerous terms, member of the Texas Bar Association since 1959, and former member of the American Bar Association and Texas Trial Lawyers Association. He served as chairman of the board, president and CEO of Landmark Savings Association of Ennis in 1981, 1982 and 1983, a director and officer of various private corporations, and former director of InterFirst Bank of Ennis. He developed Colonial Estates and Willow Creek Additions for apartment, shopping center sites and small office buildings. In 1988, he was elected Committee Chairperson of the Year, awarded by the Ennis Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Carol Lee Moore in January 1968. Survivors include his wife, Lynita Moore of Ennis; sons, Cullen Moore and wife Trish and Mark Moore, all of Houston; brother, T.O. Moore of Mission; and sister, Doris Garrett of Ennis. He then served in the U.S. military from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean conflict. While serving his country, he met Virginia Dixon and they were later married in December 1958. To that union, six children were born and one son from a previous relationship. Mr. and Mrs. McDonald moved to Gatesville in 1961. He was employed by the City of Gatesville until his retirement. He was a member of Sweet Home Baptist Church in Gatesville. His hobbies included fishing and playing dominos. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fulton T. McDonald Sr. and Minnie L. Services are pending with Capps Memorial Chapel in Fairfield. ----- 7/9/2002 Man drowns in Navarro Mills Lake By JAYSON LARSON/Daily Sun Staff A man who had just recently moved to Corsicana has become the second man to drown in an area lake this summer. Allen D. Maddox, 33, died Friday after drowning in Navarro Mills Lake. He was discovered in the water at Wolf Creek Park, according to Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife game warden Deshanna Creager. Maddox's stepfather pulled him from the water after he was in for about 15 minutes, she said. He was not in the swimming area. "(Maddox) had told his mother he was going to test the water," Creager said, "and he never came back." CPR was performed on Maddox and he was taken to Navarro Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Maddox is the second man to drown at Navarro Mills Lake in a month. Former Navarro County Sheriff's Deputy Ricky Murray drown June 8 after jumping off his family's barge. His body was found two days later following a massive search. Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Cisco with Revs. Harry Grantz and Joe Philpott officiating. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Mrs. Carter was born Nov. 30, 1904 in Necessity, Texas to Fannie Moore and Benjamin Franklin (Frank) Satterwhite, the oldest of eight children. She was a beloved teacher in Eastland County where she taught for more than 30 years, mostly in Cisco schools. She taught in Necessity, Long Branch, Ivan, Cisco and Levelland. She earned her Masters Degree of Education from Hardin Simmons University. She was a longtime and active member of, and past president of, Beta Upsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Retired Teachers Association, First Industrial Arts Club, Texas State Teachers Association, WMU and several other choir and many local clubs in Cisco. The last five years of her life were spent living with her son and daughter-in-law in Corsicana, where she joined the Mildred Baptist Church. She loved her family, church and friends. She was preceded in death by husband Truly Carter, her parents and siblings Chester Satterwhite, Esthloy Dickson, Artie Frances Reynolds, Wayne Satterwhite and Max Satterwhite. Mrs. Carter is survived by sister opal Cox of Necessity; only child J.F. EDEN, WILLIE MAE (RED) DONALDSON EDEN was born in Corsicana, Texas, July 19, 1927 and passed away on July 26, 2002 in Plano, Texas. She attended Zion Rest #2 Grade School and J. W. Jackson High School in Corsicana, Texas then moved to Dallas with her grandmother and siblings in 1944. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She leaves behind daughter, Sue Lucille Griffin Adkins of Plano, and Son Clifford "Little Brother" Griffin of Ontario, California A loving grandmother to 6 beautiful grandchildren, one great grandson, son-in-law, Henry O. Adkins and daughter-in-law. Judith Griffin. She also leaves her Aunt J.C. Anderson Butler of Wortham peacefully went home to be with her
Heavenly Father on Friday, Nov. 14, 2008. She lived a long on
blessed life serving her Lord Jesus Christ and her family. Her
birthplace was Pursley on Sept. 27, 1919, and she graduated from
Richland High School. She loved playing basketball and fishing
as a teen. She married Billy Butler of Angus at the age of
19.She leaves behind a son, Randy Butler of Wortham; three
daughters, Billie “Mac” McNeel of Fayetteville, Ark., Charlotte
McKinney of Wortham and Kathie Partain and her husband Steve of
Fairfield; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one
great-great grandchild; two sisters and a host of nieces,
nephews, cousins and friends. She is preceded in death by her
loving husband, William I. (Billy) Butler; parents, Tim and
Wilma Anderson; sister, Alvis Anderson Williams; brother, Doyle
Anderson; daughter-in-law, Ann Barham Butler; and son-in-law,
Willie Dean McNeel. Maxine’s passion was taking care of her
family and serving the community. Cooking, cleaning and helping
others were a joy. To cook a meal or taxi someone in need would
bring a song to her heart any time day or night. An outing with
her Sunday School class or the WMU was always a treat. The big
treat for Maxine was knowing the family was coming. She would
quickly go to the grocery store to gather the fixins’ for making
everyone’s favorite dish. The “feed,” she would call it, was
amazing. Several kinds of salads, beans and potato dishes not
mention cakes, pies and sweet breads. We can’t leave out the
Christmas candy. It may have been her favorite holiday event to
spend the day making candy. Traveling was high on her list as
well. About once a year she loved to go on a little trip with
her sisters. Whether it was just down to Fort Parker for a night
or two or a longer trip to Arkansas or Colorado, she was always
ready and would pack up sandwiches and snacks for the journey.
Family and friends alike will certainly miss Maxine for years to
come. We are all blessed to have had her in our lives for all
these wonderful years. Visitation will be 3 to 5 p.m. today at
Porter Funeral Home in Wortham. Service will be at 2 p.m. Monday
at First Baptist Church in Wortham. The family suggests a
donation to First Baptist Church — Family Life Center in Wortham
or the charity of your choice in lieu of flowers. Arrangements
