Oct 27, 1919 - Dec 4, 2008
Hilda
Elbourn King of Corsicana died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008, at
the age of 89. She was born in the village of Bovingdon in
England on Oct. 27, 1919, the youngest of five children. She
served in the British Army during
World War II in the
capacity of a cook for the duration of the war. Her many
friends and relatives listened with interest to her many
stories about the air raids during the London blitz. Hearing
about the war from one who lived through it directly was
always an interesting experience. Hilda met her future
husband, Charles King, after the war when he was stationed
with the U.S. Air Force near her village. When he was
transferred back to the states, Charles missed her so much
that he proposed to her by mail. Hilda booked a passenger
berth on a cargo boat so that she and Charles could be wed.
Together, they lived the life of a military family traveling
from one posting to another until Charles retired back to
Corsicana in 1963. Along the way, Hilda had two children:
Robert and Charlene. Over the years in Corsicana, Hilda was
known as a loving wife, mother, and friend. Many people
remember her delicious baking and cooking and the beauty of
