Notes:
Dr. Augustine Owen November 03, 1877, Corsicana Observer
Dr. Augustine Owen, the subject of this memorial, was a native of Georgia; born in Monticello, Oglethorp
County, on the 1st day of January, 1807. At thirteen he entered the University of Georgia, and graduated in his nineteenth
year with Judge Jon. A. Campbell and Alexander Stephens. He then attended the Medical University of Pennsylvania, and graduated with
honors at twenty-two. Returning to his home he commenced the practice of his profession and continued it until 1839. In the meantime he was
married to Miss Mary L. Stroud, daughter of Ethan Stroud, who bore him three sons and one daughter, the latter now being the only surviving
child. In 1839, in company with the Stroud family, he emigrated to Texas and commenced farming upon the land where the town on Calvert
now stands. For some time, on account of the hostility of the natives, his party was compelled to live in forts and keep guards around the
farm by bay. In October, 1867, he with Capt. W. C. Waters, his son-in-law, moved to Navarro county, since which time he has been
engaged in farming and stock raising. After some suffering and great physical depression, he died from disease of the heart, at the
residence of Capt. Waters, on the 26th day of October, 1877, in the seventy-first year of his age. Dr. Owen was a gentleman of the old school and a
philosopher of the new. Among his early associates he frequently referred to the Rev. Doctors Waddell and Delancy, Hon. Alexander
Stephens, Sam. Houston and Dr. Chapman, and it is remarkable that the impressions and teachings he received from them on the subject of the
origin of organic matter and a future state of existence did not remain with him through life; but it was so. He was a man of
independent thought, liberal views, and progressive ideas. And being a student, capable of discarding prejudices, in search of the truth, he
kept pace with the philosophy of the nineteenth century. Although not a scientist himself, he studied the ideas of those who were, compared
their views and made his conclusions. These were of the order of Hurbert Spencer, Baden Powell, Huxley, Darwin and Ingersoll.
He said he believed in a God of love and mercy, not of revenge and jealousy; that as a minute particle in nature he
had existed from the beginning, and would continue to exist through all eternity; that there was a spiritual existence in all created matter, though changing relations yet indestructible and progressive,
and when decomposition should set in with him it would only be to prepare him for a higher state of existence. But a few days before he
died he remarked: "My dear friend, I will soon be wiser and happier than I have ever been or I will know nothing. My theory of the future
is the same as when in the vigor of manhood; but like all philosophers of this age I am skeptical." But in his very last moments he clapped
his hands and with resignation on his face said: "It is all settled; I am happy now. I have ….."
