Sybil Antionette (Ingram) McConnico
Apr 23, 1849 - Apr 2, 1920

AT REST
Sister Sybil A. McConnico, daughter of Washington and Sarah Ingram, was born April 23, 1847, in Wilkinson county, Ga.  Her father came to Texas in 1853 and settled in Freestone county.  He moved to Navarro county in 1855 and settled in the Rural Shade community, where the deceased grew into womanhood.  She made a profession of of faith in Christ in 1863 and joined the Baptist Church, and was a member of that faith up to her death.

She was united in marriage to C. T. McConnico on January 17, 1867.  To them were born five children, four of whom survive their mother.  They are J. W. McConnico, Mrs. W. H. Anderson, Mrs. J. F. Mullens, of Kerens, and Mrs. L. R. Calloway of Dallas.  Their youngest daughter, Mrs. Bessie Hardeman, died Sept 15, 1899.

Sister McConnico passed from physical suffering into a blessed sleep in Jesus in the early morning of April 2, 1920, aged 72 years, 11 months and 21 days.  She leaves her husband, with whom she had lived over 53 years, the above named children, nine grand children, two sisters and one half brother.  To them we extend our heartfelt sympathies and commend them to our loving Savior, in whom she so devoutly trusted.

Funeral services were conducted by the writer and Bro. Corkern, pastor of the Baptist Church at Kerens, at 3 p.m. on April the 3rd.  Interment was in the Kerens cemetery.

At the close of the services in the home the song, "Safe in the Arms of Jesus," was touchingly rendered by special request.

The attendance at the funeral was large.

When all that loving heart and kind hands could do was finished, we were dismissed by Bro. Corkern.  We left the grave covered with beautiful evergreens and lovely flowers, fit emblems of the beauties of the Paradise of God into which the soul of Sister McConnico has entered.

Yes, "Safe in the Arms of Jesus," one by one God's children are being gathered from earth into the rest prepared for them.  We pray God's blessing upon all the loved ones left behind.  May he grant each one grace to be ready when the summons comes.

Mr. West, the son of former Wolf Brand Chili owner J.C. West, worked in the company after World War II.

In the early 1950s, he and his brother Doyle West became co-owners and James became president of the company. It was sold in 1957 to Quaker Oats Co. in Chicago, but production remained in Corsicana for many years.

The company is now owned by Nebraska-based ConAgra Foods.

James West ventured into several businesses, including another chili company and was known more for his generosity, said his daughter, Joanne West of Dallas. He taught his family that life was about friends and loving others, she said.

Born Aug. 25, 1915, in Corsicana, Mr. West lived there his entire life except for his brief time in college and the military. He graduated from Corsicana High School in 1932 and attended the institution now known as Texas A&M University.

During his time with the Army Air Corps in World War II, Mr. West wrote an Army manual on instrument flying, his daughter said.

"He always was very bright, and he always wanted to do everything the right way," Ms. West said.

After Wolf Brand Chili was sold, Mr. West had a number a business interests, including owning a freight company in Houston and a TV station in the Virgin Islands and developing hotels and apartments in Dallas, his daughter said.

In the 1980s, his family started West Brand Chili, of which Mr. West was president. The dry-mix chili was sold all over the world until about the time his wife, Lois Toone West, died in 1992.

He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Corsicana.

Mr. West is also survived by daughters Dianne West Short of Corsicana and Bonnie West of Dallas; three grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
