KILLED HIS WIFE; THEN SUICIDES
AWFUL TRAGEDY IS ENACTED IN COUNTY AT AN EARLY HOUR
Staff Special to the Sun.
Kerens, Nov. 15, --A tragedy which has cast a pall of gloom over the
entire county occurred this morning at six o’clock when Jim Berry,
aged 35 years, after beating his wife to death with a flat iron,
snuffed out his own life by crashing a 22 calibre ball through his
brain.
No cause is known for the horrible deed and the first that was known
of the tragedy was when one of the children of the dead couple was
awakened by the report of the rifle which killed the father.
The dead people are well known in this county and have many friends
here. The husband was known as one of the most prosperous and
prominent farmers in the country and as yet no solution has been
advanced to explained the double death.
Two boys, one aged ten and the other aged eight years survive their
parents.
The children were awakened by a shot and found their mother still in
bed in her night clothes with her head beaten into a pulp. The
father lay near the bed with a bullet through his head.
The coroner returned a verdict of murder and suicide.
The barrel of the rifle used by Berry to take his life had been cut
off, making a pistol out of the weapon.
The Berry farm is located three miles southeast of Kerens.
