William L. "Bill" Young

William (Bill) L. Young, born in Wichita Falls, Texas, on September 3, 1939 to Eleanor Green Young and Maurice Gill Young, died on Friday, December 17, 2010 at Navarro Regional Hospital in Corsicana.

He is survived by his wife, Bobbie Jean Young of Corsicana daughters; Julie Ann Humphries and fiance' Mark Lyle of Emhouse; Christie Jean Burleson of Grand Saline; son, Robert Maurice Young of Arlington; granddaughter Brandy Humphries Hurford and husband, Mike of Corsicana, grandson Joseph Luke Burleson of Grand Saline: two great-grandsons; Macon and Kegan Hurford of Corsicana.

Bill attended Navarro College and received his associate degree and later attended the University of Texas. He was a long time member and past president of the Navarro County Historical Society. His first passion was archeology; he rved as president of the Dallas Archeological Society, as a member of the Texas Archeological Society for over 37 years, and as a member of the Tarrant County Archeological Society. Bill was one of the original thirteen archeological stewards for the Texas Historical Commission. Bill was a columnist for the Corsicana Daily Sun as well as being a popular speaker in Navarro and surrounding counties. He was also an avid historian and spent many long hours researching and verifying historical facts.

Bill was privileged to work on the prestigious Gault (Paleo Indian) Site near Salado, Texas and he was credited with the discovery of the Mission San Jose De La Nazoni in East Texas.

Bill was the owner and manager of the Arrow Landscaping Company in Corsicana. He was loved by all who knew him and will be missed terribly, but there is comfort in knowing that his suffering has ended and he is at home with his Lord.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at Fresenius Medical Care, at Community Transit, and Bethany Home Health Care for all their assistance and loving care for Bill.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, December 20, 2010 at Corley Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Mark Lyle officiating. The pallbearers will be Bruce McManus, Wayne Nelson, Ed Erwin, John McClung, John Yates, Chris McKeown, Lewis Palos, and Rick Hocker. Honorary pallbearers will be Gary Summerall, Alan Skinner, Dick Kelsey, Robert Keathley, Sabino Perales, Valentin Perales, Adrian Perales, Apolonio Perales, and Armando Perales . Burial will be immediately following at Oakwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Navarro County Historical Society at 912 W. Park Avenue, Corsicana, TX 75110.

Matthew Gonzales

Matthew Gonzales, 28, passed away Dec. 12, 2010.

Matthew was born April 14, 1982, and is remembered by his friends and family for his warm smile and hugs. He graduated from Corsicana High School in 2001. Following that he was in the Army and served 18 months in Iraq.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Debra Sue Pope

Survivors include his sister, Nicolette Ayala, and nephews, Simuel and Elizhah and nieces, Aaliyah and liviyah of Rice; sister, Gina Chavez and niece, Natalie, and nephews, Isaac and Marcus of Ennis; father, Secundino Gonzales of Granbury; He is also survived by his adopted family, Kent and Jan Richey of Mildred, Joshua and Steffany Bowling, Josh Jr., and Brett of College Station.

A memorial service is being held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, at the Emanuel Baptist Church in Corsicana.

James A. Metcalf

James A. Metcalf, 67, of Corsicana, passed away on Monday, Dec. 13, 2010, at his home.

He was born Oct. 8, 1943, in Goldsboro, N.C. to Geraldine Fay and Albert Ray Metcalf. Mr. Metcalf was a long time resident of Corsicana and worked for Dr. Pepper for over 25 years. He was a very private person who loved his family and friends. He enjoyed going fishing, traveling, dancing and going garage sale shopping, and had an extensive soda-water bottle collection.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Joyce Metcalf.

Survivors include his wife of 13 years, Virginia Metcalf; daughter, Bobbie Lewis and husband John; sons, Michael Elkins and wife Kim, Albert Elkins and wife Becky, Ted Holifield, Jonnie Holifield, and Cecil Holifield; brother, Robert Metcalf and wife Candice; and he is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010, at Corley Funeral Home.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec.17, 2010, at Corley Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Chuck Bentjen of Beatrice, Neb. officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Tommy Metcalf, Kyle Metcalf, Robert Ortiz, Tim Carmichael, Johnny Carmichael Jr., and Jeff Lewis. Honorary pallbearers are John Lewis, Allen Fortner, and Joe Ross.

Dorothy Nell (Shepperd) Huseman
Apr 28, 1922 - Dec 10, 2010

Dorothy Nell Shepperd Huseman, 88, passed away Friday, Dec. 10, 2010.

Born on April 28, 1922 in Mexia, Dorothy Nell grew up in nearby Corsicana, graduating from high school there in 1938. During World War II, Dorothy Nell worked in the display departments at Sears and Foley's in Houston. Impressed by the artistic and calligraphic skills exhibited on letters from overseas written by a co-worker's brother in the U.S. Army, Dorothy Nell began writing to artist/calligrapher, Sgt. Floyd Huseman. They corresponded for two years before they finally met and later married on Dec. 22, 1944. After the war, the couple moved to Grand Prairie, where she was active at the newly formed Fairview Baptist Church and worked as a free-lance display designer for Sanger Bros. in Dallas. In 1955, they moved to Longview, where their only child was born, and where she was an active charter member of Oakland Heights Baptist Church. In 1963, the family moved back to the DFW area, where they became active members at Meadowbrook Baptist Church. In 1972, Dot went to work at the Tarrant County Junior College Northeast Campus bookstore, where she became head cashier and did the window displays for eighteen years. For much of her life Dot was a smart and elegant dresser, sewing many of her clothes. She maintained a sweet and loving disposition to all with whom she came in contact.

Dot was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Floyd; and her sister Iris Cowan.

Survivors include her son Ben, daughter-in-law Leigh; grandchildren, Erik and Diane of Carrollton; she is also survived by a sister, Audrey Foster of Farmers Branch.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, at Shannon Funeral Home, located at 7301 E. Lancaster, in Fort Worth.

The funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, at Shannon Rose Hill Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at Shannon Rose Hill Memorial Park.

The family would like to thank the many wonderful caregivers at Lakewood Village in Fort Worth and Sandy Lake Care Center of Coppell. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Lakewood Village Christian Care Center, Fort Worth.

James Roddie DuBose
Apr 17, 1918 - Dec 9, 2010

J.R. DuBose, 92, passed away Dec. 9, 2010.

J.R. was born in Winkler on April 17, 1918, the son of Clark and Myrtle DuBose. He served in the U.S. Army under General Patton during World War II, receiving an honorable discharge Dec. 29, 1945. J. R. was a deacon Emeritus and charter member of River Oaks Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school for many years. He owned and operated restaurants in Houston, Tel-Wink Grill, Century Coffee Shop and Adobie Grill in Toas, New Mexico.

He is preceded in death by his wife LaVaughn (Bonnie) DuBose.

Survivors include his son, Louise Lobit DuBose; sister, Marilyn LaRouaxand husband Richard; three nieces; he is also survived by great nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside services with Military Honors with be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston. The Rev. Martun Miley will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to River Oaks Baptist Church Mission Fund.

Adolphus Tarbutton
Aug 2, 1944 - Dec 8, 2010

Adolphus Tarbutton, 66, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010, at Navarro Regional Hospital. Adolphus and his twin sister, Ada Mae, were born to Joe Tarbutton and Julia Beatrice Cobb Tarbutton on Aug. 2, 1944, in Corsicana. Adolphus attended G. W. Jackson High School (Class of 1962). He is preceded in death by his parents; aunts, Brandon Bonner, and Mattie Lue Collins; and grandparents, Henry and Willie Conley-Tarbutton.

Endearingly referred to as "Atay" by family and friends, he is survived three children, Adonis Tarbutton, Judy Marie Price, and Crystal Brown; two grandsons, Timothy Jamal Tarbutton and Kadeem Jadonis Tarbutton. He leaves eight siblings to mourning his loss: twin sister Ada Mae Tarbutton Hall, Michael Tarbutton, twin brothers Donald and Ronald Tarbutton, Bobby Joe Tarbutton (Cindy), Carl Tarbutton (Yolanda), Beatrice Tarbutton-McKinley (Herman), and Robert Tarbutton (Wanda “Kay”); nieces and nephews, Marcus Tarbutton, JoElla Tarbutton-Springfield, Ralph “David” Johnson, Jr., Jesse Tarbutton (Brad), Regina Johnson, Jerry Tarbutton, Tanika "Piggy" Tarbutton, LaDonna “Red” Tarbutton, Donnita Smart (Richard), Ethel Mae Cooper, Isiah Tarbutton, Bobby “Tiger” Tarbutton, Joe Marcus Cook, Carl Steward, Karla Tarbutton, Kevin Norris, Tracie Tolliver, Sarah Rice (Derrick), Michael Green, Brittney Carter (Jason), Robert “Josh” Tarbutton and Kaycie Tarbutton. Well loved by so many, Adolphus, will be missed by a host of friends and extended family members.

The Rev. Archie Hatten will be officiating on Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010, at 1 p.m. at Grace Temple AME. Viewing will be held on Wednesday from 4 to 6 p.m. followed by the Wake from 6 to 8 p.m. at Ross and Johnson Chapel. There will be a photo slideshow during the Wake. The funeral will be held on Thursday, Dec. 16 at 1 p.m. at Grace Temple AME Church in Corsicana. After the funeral, a meal will be served at 3 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Community Center.

Robert Allen "Oscar" Chrisman, 81, of Kerens, passed away Monday, Dec. 13, 2010, at his residence in Kerens.

Mr. Chrisman was president of the Production Credit Association for 32 years and was a 50 year Mason with Masonic Relief Lodge 236.

He was preceded in death by son, Mark Chrisman.

Mr. Chrisman is survived by his wife, Doris Chrisman of Kerens; daughters and son-in-laws, Kris and Kevin Lockhart of Deer Park, and Karla and Scott Macke of Benbrook; granddaughter, Lane Borrello and husband Kyle of Fort Worth; granddaughter, Lindsay Macke of Benbrook; grandson, Todd Lockhart of Hesperia, Calif.; great grandson, Pierce Lockhart of Hesperia; brother, Bruce Chrisman of Burleson; sister, Dean Armstrong of Newton.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010, at the Paschal Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Royce Measures and the Rev. Wes Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in the Kerens Cemetery.

Roy Fira Jr.

Roy Fira Jr., 65, passed away Friday, Dec. 10, 2010, at Navarro Regional Hospital in Corsicana.

He was born Jan. 14, 1945, in Sinton to Roy and Didia Fira Sr. He moved to Ennis in 1962 and two years later married his life-long love, Alma Garcia, on Dec. 8, 1964. They made their home in Corsicana. Roy was a meat specialist by trade and managed several Winn-Dixie meat departments during his 45 year career. His fun loving attitude was infectious. He showed kindness and generosity to all family and friend, making all those that knew him, love him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Didia Fira Sr.; and a niece Brandi Fira.

Survivors include his wife, Alma Fira; two brothers Raymond Fira and wife Erma, and Ricardo Fira and wife Michele; a sister Elva Castillo and husband Henry; he is also survived by Adam, Debbie and Adam Lee Garcia whom he raised and loved as his son, daughter and grandson; and he is also survived by his brother-in-laws, Pete Garcia and wife Josie, Freddy Garcia and wife Rosie, Lee Garcia and wife Vickie.

Visitation will be 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010, with Rosary at 7 p.m. at Corley Funeral Home Chapel.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father Danilo Ramos officiating. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Fira, Ricky Castillo, Eddie Castillo, Adam Lee Garcia, Pedro Garcia, Chris Garcia and Freddy Garcia, Jr.

Rex Braddock

Rex Braddock, 77, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010.

Rex was a good, hard-working, and genuine man. He was a wonderful husband, amazing father, and an excellent 'Pop' to his grandchildren. He loved and lived for horses.

Survivors include his loving wife, Helen Braddock; daughters, Christy Wall and her husband Larry, and Karen Ross and her husband Steve; granddaughters, Alicia Wall, Lindsey Wood and her husband Nathan, and Lauren Ross; sisters, Ginna Nunn, Nita Loutherback and her husband Tom, and Dorothy Turner; and brother, Grover Braddock and his wife Barbara.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010, at Moore Bowen Road Chapel in Arlington.

Maria Magdalena “Helene” Grant
Dec. 4, 1921 - Dec 11, 2010

Maria Magdalena “Helene” Grant, 89, passed away on Dec. 11, 2010, in Austin, after a battle with cancer.

Helene was born in Hassloch-Pfalz, Germany, on Dec. 4, 1921. She was one of twenty-one Forstmann children. Helene was always known for her strength of character and determination. She cherished her younger siblings and acted as mother and protector to them. She gave birth to her only child, Hermann Forstmann, Sr., on March 10, 1946. Many people in Corsicana knew, liked, and respected Helene Grant. They admired her forth-right manner. They were fascinated that she earned her driver's license at the age of 65. They were intrigued by her never-admit-defeat attitude.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Grant; her son, Hermann Forstmann Sr.; seven siblings who died at birth; her sisters Katherine, Erna, Elisabeth, Joann, and Emily; her brothers Karl, Otto, Viktor, Jakob, Emil, Hermann, and Friedrich; many beloved “in-laws”; and many cousins and old friends.

Survivors include her sister, Auguste Sandfuchs of Germany; longtime friend and sister-in-law, Catherine Patman; stepdaughter, Anita Brogden and husband Donny; step-son, Johnny Grant; seven grandchildren, Mary Helen Castillo and husband Frankie, Johnny Grant, Steven Hines and wife Cynthia, Herman Forstmann Jr. and wife Laurie, Alisha Self and husband Jared, Johnny Forstmann, and Kelly Culver; nine great grandchildren: Tiffany and husband Edward, Elisabeth and husband Benny, Devin, Hunter, Colby, Alex, Juli, Lexi, and Brendon; five great-great grandchildren, Nathaneal, Alicia, Isaiah, Naomi, and Benny; daughters-in-law Sue Forstmann Lancaster and husband Wayne, and Karen Mitcham; she is survived by many other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010, at Corley Funeral Home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010, at Corley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Clyde Franks officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park in Corsicana. Pallbearers will be Herman Forstmann Jr., Johnny Forstmann, Lance Northern, Neal Franks, and Donny Brogden. Honorary pallbearers Alex Castillo, Juli Castillo, Robert Newson.

John R. Manning
d. Dec 2, 2010

John R. Manning, a resident of Corsicana, after a long and courageous battle with metastatic lung cancer, went to be with our Lord early Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010.

Manning, originally of Godley, served as an Agriculture Science teacher, first at Maypearl High School, and then for over 30 years at Corsicana High School. A beloved father, friend, teacher, and mentor, Manning helped shape the lives of not only his own three children, but also many thousands of his former Agriculture students, many of which followed in his footsteps becoming educators themselves. Even after more than a decade into retirement and up until the year of his death, Manning still helped friends and former students with their children's livestock projects.

Manning grew up on a Johnson County dairy farm where he learned the importance and value of hard work and dedication. He passed these attributes on to his students throughout the years. During his 40 plus years in Corsicana he was a proud and active member of the Corsicana Optimist Club, First Baptist Church, and the “Commerce Street Social Club.” He coached youth baseball, and for decades served as a committee member for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo calf scramble and Navarro County Go -Texan committees. Manning was well known throughout the state as a judge for livestock shows. He was also an avid golfer, gardener, and poker player.

All that knew Manning would agree that he was a one-of-a-kind man, and that he will be greatly missed.

Survivors include the mother of his children, Suzanne Jobe Manning; children, Dr. John Garrett Manning, DVM, Jason Robert Manning and wife Rachel, and Jamie Lee Manning; sisters and brother-in-laws, Sara and Dean Brown, and Ann and Tommy Mackey; grandson, John Michael Manning; he is also survived by nieces and nephews.

A memorial “Celebration of Life” service will be held on Dec. 17, 2010, at the Fannie Mae Vernon Room, located at the north end of the Navarro County Youth Exposition Center. The memorial will start at noon.   

In lieu of flowers, the family requests you make a donation to help endow the John R. Manning Memorial Scholarship, c/o Community National Bank-Corsicana, 321 N. 15th St. Corsicana, TX  75110. The scholarship, once endowed, will be given each year to an area high school senior that plans on studying and pursuing a career in Agriculture Science.

Alice (Tatum) Andrews
Sept 1, 1924 - Dec 10, 2010

Alice Tatum Andrews, born in Corsicana on Sept. 1, 1924, to Alice Corley Tatum and George Liston Tatum, died on Friday, Dec. 10, 2010, at her home in Dallas.

Her family includes brother, George Liston Tatum Jr. of Vermont; John Corley Tatum, who predeceased her; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Russell Johnson; daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Jerry Stem; infant son who predeceased her; grandchildren, John and Melissa Taylor, Russ and Leigh Johnson, Ryan and Kristi Johnson; great-grandchildren Jack Taylor, Caroline Johnson, Cole Johnson, and Luke Johnson.

Alice graduated from the University of Texas and was active in the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. She reared her family in Stamford, Texas, where she taught school for over 20 years and was active at St. John's United Methodist Church. After moving to Dallas to be near her family, she became a Life Master Bridge player and enjoyed traveling and making friends. She maintained friendships with her childhood friends throughout her life and her friends and her family were paramount to her happiness. “Gigi” was the matriarch of her family and she set the example of looking for the good in all situations. Her optimism, love of life and strength of character went hand in hand.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 13, 2010, at Corley Funeral Home Chapel with interment at Oakwood Cemetery.

Thomas McCammon "Mac" Spikes Jr.

Thomas McCammon "Mac" Spikes Jr., 57, a golf professional of River Crest Country Club, died Friday, Dec. 10, 2010, at his home.

Thomas McCammon Spikes Jr., was born March 7, 1953, in Corsicana, son of the late Martha Clarkson and Thomas McCammon Spikes Sr. He graduated from Corsicana High School in 1971 and received a B.A. in Public Relations from Texas Tech in 1975. In 1975, he married his high school sweetheart, Marlys Smith, and the couple celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary on Aug. 2, 2010. Mac and Marlys have four daughters. Mac's first career was as the owner of a Tom's Peanuts distributorship in Galveston. In 1981, he joined the golf profession and attended PGA Business School and obtained his 'Class A' PGA certification. He worked at golf courses across Texas from 1981 to 1991, when he joined River Crest Country Club where he served as head golf professional and then as director of golf until his death. Mac was an active member of the NTPGA, served on the Board of Directors and as president. He also represented the North Texas section at the National PGA Convention several times. Mac was also an avid amateur race car driver. He participated in Sports Car Club of America events across the country which he enjoyed for the competition and camaraderie as well as for the winning.

Survivors include his wife, Marlys Spikes; daughters, Shannon Scott and husband Patrick of Kingwood, Mary-Margaret Lemons and husband Eric of Fort Worth, Martha-Nell Kennedy and husband John of Fort Worth, and Shelley Spikes of Fort Worth; granddaughters, Molly and Maggie Scott, and Lucy Mac Lemons; sister, Margaret Herman and husband John of Austin; he is also survived by many nephews and nieces.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010, at Thompson's Harveson & Cole Funeral Home.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 13, 2010, at Arlington Heights United Methodist Church, with Dr. Jerry Chism and the Rev. Doug Turner officiating. Cloratho Reamy
May 10, 1933 - Dec 6, 2010

Cloratho Reamy, 77, of Navarro Mills, went to be with his Lord and Savior, at his home on Dec. 6, 2010, with his family at his side.

He was born on May 10, 1933, in Pursley to Ogle and Willie Eslick Reamy. He served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict, from 1952 to 1955. Cloratho worked as a foreman in the oil production industry for more than 32 years. He was a member of the Navarro Mills Baptist Church and enjoyed going to Bible class. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles and was a honorary member of the Blue Knights Motorcycle Club and his self proclaimed club "The Old Geiser's."

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Clay Reamy; granddaughter, Kristy Jennings; grandson, Jason Barber; brother, Lafamond Reamy; and by a sister, Jo Kuyava.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth Ann Reamy of Navarro Mills; children, Sherry and Pat McGinty of Buffalo, Debra and Kenneth Barber of Angus, Evenia Richards and Joel Price of Navarro Mills, Stacy and Teresa Reamy of Blooming Grove, Bryan and Danielle Reamy of Navarro Mills, and Jerad Reamy of Corsicana; 21 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; brother, Ostein Reamy of Navarro; he is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held in the Griffin - Roughton Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 10, 2010, with Pastor Bob Reid and Pastor Ricky Woodall officiating. Interment will follow at Dresden Cemetery with Military Honors by the United States Air Force. Serving as pallbearers will be Leonard Coker, Jackie Thomas, Jimmy D. Coker, Jerry Cagle, Mark Norris, and Hugh Warren. Honorary pallbearers will be Bobby Wade, Bill Ford, and James Ham.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be made to the Navarro Mills Baptist Church Transportation Fund.

Rev. E. Dennis Smart Sr

The Rev. E. Dennis Smart Sr., 83, passed away Friday, Dec. 3, 2010, at the Sterling House Assisted Living Center in Waxahachie, surrounded by his family.  

The Rev. Smart was born on June 11, 1927, in Pine Bluff, Ark., to Elton Dallas Smart and Azelle Lulu Patterson Smart. His family moved to Dallas, in 1930 where he graduated from Adamson High School in 1944. He attended Texas A&M University (Class of 1948), SMU and the University of Kentucky. During World War II he served in the Navy aboard two aircraft carriers, the USS Wake Island CVE65 and the USS Kearsarge CV33.  Following his discharge from the Navy, he joined the US Army Reserve and received a retired discharge in 1964. He attended the Episcopal Theological Seminary in Lexington, Ky. from 1960 to 1963, and was subsequently ordained to the priesthood. He served churches in Waxahachie, Ennis, Corsicana, Arlington, Athens in the Diocese of Dallas, and for several years as Rector of the Episcopal Church in Pampa in the Diocese of Northwest Texas. Although he retired from full-time ministry in 1988, due to a heart attack, he continued to serve regularly until a year ago. He was active in the priesthood for almost 50 years.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Jean Smart of Waxahachie; three children, Sandra Shirey and her husband Doug of Terrell, Denise McClure of Waxahachie, and Dennis Smart Jr., and his wife Teresa of Midlothian; he was also blessed with seven grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010, in the parlor of St. John's Episcopal Church, located at 101 N. 14th St., in Corsicana.

A memorial service to celebrate the Rev. Smart's life will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 10, 2010, at St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Ed Monk officiating. Interment will follow the service in the church's columbarium. Honorary Pallbearers will be Julian Erdmann, Dr. Robert Lang, Bill Payne, Dr. Kent Rogers, Bill Regester, Randy Sparks, Dr. Jim Witten, and Bill Woody.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Senior Citizen's Food Pantry of Midlothian, 317 E. Ave. E., Midlothian, TX  76065.

Mrs. Elizabeth Berta Chenowth, age 103, passed away Sunday at Twilight Home in Corsicana. She was born September 3, 1907 in Waxahachie, Texas to William Albert Compton, Sr. and Sally Irene Glass Compton.

She was preceded in death by her husband John L. Chenowth and a daughter.

Mrs. Chenowth is survived by a brother, W.A. Compton, Jr. of Irving, Texas and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 10:00 AM Tuesday at Corley Funeral Home Chapel in Corsicana, Tx. with Rev. Grayson Glass officiating. Graveside services will be 10:00 AM Wednesday at Levelland Cemetery in Levelland, Texas.

James Thomas Coker

James Thomas Coker, 74, formerly of Corsicana, passed away Aug. 30, 2010, in Carrollton, after a brief battle with cancer.  

He was born to Olen C. and Willie Lee Coker in Emhouse on July 25, 1936.  

James Thomas married his high school sweetheart, Anita Jo Patril in 1957 and raised their family in Carrollton. James worked in the retail industry for over 45 years with long careers at both TG & Y Stores and Minyard's Food Stores.

Beloved father of six, Deborah, Dana, Cindy, Janet, Karen and Kyle, he was a constant figure at all his grandchildrens' sporting and school events.    

James Thomas was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Anita Jo; six children and their spouses; 16 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; brother, Billy Joe and sister-in-law Ann Coker; brother, Jim and sister-in-law Camille Coker; sister, Elizabeth and brother-in-law James Bryant; best friend and neighbor, Charlie Almond; and many beloved aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010, at Mary Immaculate Church in Farmers Branch, with a Funeral Mass immediately following at 10:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Douglas Burl "Doug" Hightower

Douglas “Doug” Hightower, 88 of Corsicana passed away Monday, Aug. 30, 2010.

He was born June 14, 1922 in Frost to Robert and Geneva Hightower.

He served the Corsicana Police Department from fall of 1952 till July 1, 1987. During his time with the Corsicana Police Department he served as assistant police chief and police chief for many years. He was inducted into the military service on Oct. 5, 1942. He received basic training at Camp Gruber, Okla. and was assigned to Co. D, 349th Infantry Regiment, 88th Division maneuvers in Louisiana from  June 14 to Sept. 1, 1943. From there he went to Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio; departed from Newport  News, Va. on Dec. 17, 1943, and arrived in Casablanca, North Africa on Christmas Day, 1943. He participated in five major battles, Rome, Arno, North Apennines and the Po Valley. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct medal, AML Ribbon, European Middle Eastern Ribbon, Expert Driver Medal and Sharpshooters Medals, M1 and Carbine Rifle. He arrived back in the U.S. on Sept. 1, 1945, and was discharged Nov. 19, 1945. He married Nov. 26, 1945 to Edna Buckner. Farmed in Frost for seven years, then joined the Corsicana Police Department and retired from there in June 1987 after 35 years.

He is survived by his wife, Edna Hightower; children, Larry Hightower of Corsicana and Ricky and Cindy Hightower of Corsicana; grandchildren, Ricky Hightower Jr., Jeremy Hightower, Jeffery Hightower and wife Stayce, Susan Hightower and Ashley Hightower; great grandchildren, Colton, Haley, Jeremy Jr., Kelby and Faith; sister-in-law Emily Hightower.

He was preceded in death by brother Jetro “Johnnie” Sims; sister Opal (Franklin) Faulk; infant brother Marion Francis Hightower; sister Miriam (Travis) Hunt; Syble (Norris) Workman; and David Duane Hightower.

Pallbearers will be Les Cotton, Thomas Dockery, Ted Warren, Ken Kirkwood, Randy Blue, Neal Baggett and Ladena Baggett.

Visitation was 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010, at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home.

Lillian Carr, 90, from Rockwall, and previously from Corsicana, went home to be with her Lord on July 10, 2010.

She was born and grew up at Pisgah Ridge, Texas, and lived most of her life in Corsicana. She was a retired employee of the Corsicana Independent School District. Lillian was a long time member of the Memorial Baptist Church in Corsicana.

She is preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Roland Carr; parents, Mack and Bessie Frost; a brother, Bryan Frost; and sisters, Mildred Raby and Margaret Walker.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn and Judy Carr of Rockwall, and Ken and Amy Carr of Corsicana; grandchildren, Carrie Williams of Grand Prairie, Kristi Smalley of Rockwall, Rebecca Tamez of Rockwall, Greg Carr of Waxhaw, N.C., and Ashley Coker of Waxahachie; and step grandchildren, Hillary York of Austin, and Lt. Cameron York of Washington, DC. ; 12 great grandchildren; she is also survived by a brother, Bill Frost of Bryan.

Pallbearers will be Greg Carr, Scott Williams, Manny Tamez, Eric Tamez, Preston Smalley, and Heath Coker.

Kathryn Gage McAfee died Wednesday at Harkness Pavilion, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, New York City,.after a long illness, She was 65 years old and lived at "Stoneleigh", Hudson, New graduated from Corsicana High School in 1925, from Southern Methodist University in 1928 (B.A.) and Columbia University in 1929 (MA.)
She was active in many charities in New York City and Westchester County for a long period of time. For many years she was director and vice president of the Youth Consultation Service, Diocese of New York. In 1958, she was instrumental in reviving the Y.C.S. Mistletoe Debutantc Ball and served as chairman, and later as honorary chairman.
Mrs. McAfee was one of the organizers and original directors of the Adoption Service of Westchester County, Director of S. Faith House, Tarrytown, New York and served as its president, member of the Daughters of American Revolution, Garden Club of Irvington-on-Hudson, Texas Club and Ardsly County Club.
She is survived by her husband, Horace J. McAfee, senior member of Simpson, Thatcher and Bartlett, New York City, a daughter, Mrs. James N. Baxter, two sons, William Gage McAfee and Stuart Reeves McAfee, Two grandchildren and her father, William Worth Gage, Corsicana.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, Irvington-on-Hudson, New York.
The family suggests memorials in the form of a contribution to Cancer Care, Inc. or Youth Consultation Service of the Diocese of New York.

Funeral services f6r Fred W. Mitchell, 71, former Corsicana resident, who died suddenly with a heart attack at Mineral Wells Saturday,
were held from the Emmet Baptist churchy Sunday, at 4 p. m.
Burial was In Emmett cemetery 'Mitchell, at one time a member of the Mitchell and McAfee Jewelry concern at Hubbard and Corsicana, was a stock-farmer and merchant at Tyler for the past several years. He was a detective with the Houston police force prior to World War I and entered the jewelry business at Hubbard in 1915, later opening a store here in the 1920s and was a partner with I. D. McAfee for many years.
The funeral services were 'conducted by Rev. Huble Bradberry, pastor of the Emmett church, assisted by Rev. C. C. Ellis, pastor of the Frost Baptist church.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. James B. Kevins, Richardson, and Mrs. Claris Stevens, Graham; two brothers, Guy Mitchell, Waco, and Jesse Mitchell, Tyler; two sisters, Mrs. E. B. Reed, Lubbock, and Mrs. Polly. Campbell, -McKinney; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and other elatives.

Ralph DeWitt McAfee

NATIVE OF NAVARRO COUNTY, NAVY PILOT
MISSING IN ACTION
Ensign Ralph DeWitt McAfee, 24, U. S. Navy, native of Emmett, Navarro county, pilot of a Navy Hellcat fighter plane, Is missing In action In the South Pacific since May 5, according to a notice In a Compton, Calif., newspaper received by his uncle, I. D. McAfee of Corsicana. The missing Navy flier Is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Travis DeWitt McAfee of Compton, Calif., who were reared In the Emmett community.
The missing flier's wife was not notified of the message from the Navy department until two weeks after the birth of a son, May 18. A graduate of Graham High School at the age of 15 years, McAfee enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 years in 1936. After training at San Diego. he went on to the Battleship Colorado and later made a chief's rating on the Idaho, later helping convoy soldiers to Iceland and Greenland and aiding in the rescue of the crew of the Reuben James.
Made a gunner on Navy observation planes, he had gone down on seven planes, with three of his pilots killed, but had only been Injured twice. After his Atlantic duty, young McAfee shifted to the Pacific for three mouths, made one trip with the aircraft carrier Wasp, and saw it sunk.
In November, 1912, McAfee entered Navy Pre-flight School at Athens, Ga., in preparation for his wings. He had 1,600 flying hours to his credit, and had finished the CAA primary training course in California. After going to New Orleans and Pensacola, he was assigned to the F?? planes and completed further training in Alabama and Florida. He shipped overseas last Christmas. In letters to his parents, according to the article, he had downed several Japanese planes, and was soon scheduled to be promoted to a junior lieutenancy.

E. B. Ballew, 55, native of Emmett, Tchuacana resident, died in a Mexia hospital Wednesday following an extended Illness.
Funeral services were held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. from the Tehuacana Methodist church of which he was Sunday School superintendent. Burial was in
Mexia City cemetery. The rites were conducted by Rev. Lawrence Shivers, retired Methodist minister; Dr. A. R. Corn, former Methodist college president, and Rev. Joe McAfee, Georgetown Methodist minister.
The Masonic Lodge had charge of graveside rites.
Ballew was connected with the Mexia State School for the past several years.
Surviving are his wife of Tehuacana; a son, Lee Kenneth Ballew, Waco; mother, Mrs. Pearl Ballew Emmett; five sisters, Mrs. Leslie Price, Palestine; Mrs. J. C. Kornegay and Mrs. Floyd Lawrence, both of Waco; Mrs. Lena Ruth Read, Dallas, and Mrs. Jimmy Caffy, Emmett; a brother, Harvey Ballew, superintendent of the Lampasas schools; a grand child and other relatives.

George Edward Collins, 67 life-long Navarro county resident, retired farmer, died Friday night in the Twilight Home following a short Illness.
Funeral services will be held from the McCammon Chapel Sunday at 3 p.m. with burial in the Pattison cemetery. The rites will be conducted by Rev. Jack N. Bell, pastor of the Bethel Missionary Baptist church.

Funeral services for George Edward Collins, 67, retired farmer, who died Friday night at Twilight Home following a short illness, were held Sunday at 3 p.m. from the McCammon Chapel. He was a life-long resident of Navarro county.

Services will be at 2 p.m. hursday at the Corley Funeral Home Chapel for James Kelton Sikes, 48, native of Corsicana was pronounced dead on arrival at Memorial Hospital after he collapsed Tuesday at work. He was employed at the Austin Bridge and Construction Company.

Funeral services for Mrs. Emma Ingham, 76, life-long Navarro county resident, who died at her home, Route 3, Corsicana, Saturday, were held from the Griffin Chapel Sunday at 3 p. m. The rites were conducted by Rev. Jack Goff, pastor of the North Side Baptist church; Rev. W. T. Allmon, pastor of the Cedar Creek Baptist church, of which she had been a member 61 years, and Rev. H. L. McKissack, Teague Baptist minister.
She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jack Highnote, early pioneer residents of this area.
Surviving are four sons, Sam, Earl, J. D., Jr., and Charlie Ingham, all of Corsicana; five grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were T. R, Rod, D. J. Martin, Oscar Skinner, Cecil Moore, Alva Cook, Virgil Prater, Glenn Henson and Harold Nichols.

Funeral services for Edgar Bolin, aged 46, who died at his home in Emhouse Saturday afternoon, were held from the Baptist
church in Emhouse Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Rev. E. O. Stewart, pastor of the Missionary Baptist church, Corsicana, officiated.

Burial was in the Pattison cemetery.

BLOOMING GROVE - Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at the Blooming Grove United Methodist Church for Sammie L. Saunders, 67 former Navarro County Commissioner of Pet. 4 for 16 years, who died at noon Wednesday.
Rev. John Clifford, pastor, will officiate, and burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Blooming Grove with Masons assisting. Arrangements are with Bradley Funeral Home.
Survivors include his widow, Viola, of Blooming Grove; a son, Richard C. Saunders of Blooming Grove; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Judy Saunders of Blooming Grove; three grandchildren, Laurie, Glynn, and Lynn Saunders all of Blooming Grove and; two brothers, Albert Saunders of Blooming Grove and Euel Saunders of Waxahachie; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was a member of the Blooming Grove United Methodist Church, Blooming Grove Masonic Lodge, Frost Chapter of Eastern Star, and IOOF Lodge of Frost. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner.
He was also a longtime resident and native of the Blooming Grove and Frost area.
Nephews will be pallbearers.

the Rev. Bill Chesser officiating.
Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Blooming Grove under the direction of Rudolph Owen Funeral Home of Italy.
Born in 1896 in Blooming Grove, Mr. Carroll had lived in Italy for the past 30 years. He was a retired butcher and a member
of First Christian Church in Blooming Grove.

He is survived by his widow of Italy; three sons, James D., Ray D. and Rufus Carroll of Corsicana; one daughter, Mrs.
Frances Holdeman of Mineral Wells; one brother, E. L. Carroll of Dorchester; one sister, Mrs. J. Benton Davis, also of Dorchester; and ten grandchildren.

BLOOMING GROVE, June 1 -(Spl.)—Sunday afternoon funeral rites were held here for Enoch White, 80, former resident of Blooming Grove who died Friday night in Waco.
Services were held from the Central Baptist Church, with Rev. Wayne Runnels, the pastor, conducting. Burial was in the Dresden cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, of Waco; three sons, Robert and Grover, both of Vernon, and James, Waco; five daughters, Mrs. Rhoda Wilson, Athens; Mrs.Peggy Chaney, Stamford; Mrs. Blanche Owen, Athens; Mrs. Tommy Baggett, Fort Worth; and Mrs, D. Funeral services for Mrs. F. B. Burnham, 88, formerly of Dresden, who died in Meridian Wednesday, were held Thursday at 3 p.m. from the Dresden Methodist church. Burial was in the Dresden cemetery.
A native of Mississippi, Mrs. Burnham came to Texas at the age of 12 years and resided at Dresden until 1948. She had resided with a daughter, Mrs. J. A. Brister, at Walnut Springs since 1948.
Other survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Q. Q. Dickson, Corsicana; a son, Luther Arnold.
Dallas; three stepsons, a step-daughter, 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren and other relatives.
Grandsons were pallbearers.

T. E. TADLOCK IS BURIED THURSDAY DRESDEN CEMETERY

Funeral services for T. E. Tadlock. aged 58 years, who died at his home in the Zions Rest community Wednesday morning at 4 o'clock following a lingering illness of several months, were held at Dresden Thursday morning at 11 o'clock, with Rev. A. C. Carraway, pastor of the Chatfield Methodist church, officiating. Interment was made in the
Dresden cemetery.

The deceased is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Effie Horalson and Mrs. Beulah Odom; and son Robert Tadlock, all of Corsicana.

Pallbearers were his three brothers and three brothers-in-laws.

Funeral services for Mrs. Alice Sparks, aged 85 years, who died near Drane Thursday night, were held at Dresden Saturday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock with interment in the
Dresden cemetery. She had resided in Navarro county for the past 10 years.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. G. L. Goodman, Houston, and Mrs. W. W. Fitzgerald, Drane, and five grandchildren.

The rites were conducted by Rev. Mr. Williams of Blooming Grove.

BLOOMING GROVE, April 27—(Spl)—Claude C. Warren, 75, retired merchant, died at Memorial Hospital in Corsicana early Wednesday after a short illness.

 A native of Navarro Mills, Warren lived most of his life within Navarro county. He formerly farmed, ran a cafe business, and was once county jailer under Sheriff C. O. Curington. He resided at Frost at the time of his death.

Services will be held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. from the Central Baptist church, Blooming Grove, with Rev. B. O. Baker Jr., pastor of the Birchman Baptist church, Fort Worth, conducting, assisted by Rev. T. R. Harrison, pastor of the Central Baptist church, Blooming Grove. Burial will be in the Dresden cemetery.

He is survived by two sons, J. D. Warren, Gatesville, and G. I. Warren, Frost; a daughter. Mrs. Myra Dell Knapp, Fort Worth; a brother, Fred Warren, Corsicana; two sisters, Mrs. Lila Westmoreland, El Paso, and Mrs. Bill Cheatam, San Angelo; four grandchildren and other relatives.

Rice Woman Dies Tractor Accident

RICE •— A Rice woman, Mrs. Louella Bailey, 40, was killed Monday evening when she fell from a tractor and was run over by a brush-hog mower she was pulling, according to Judge G. W. O'Neal, coroner.

Deputy Sheriff Grady McCall said the woman's husband, Robert M. Bailey, called his home, on the west side of Rice, about 7:20 p.m. and informed him that Mrs. Bailey was dead after having fallen off the tractor. McCall said Mrs. Bailey had apparently run into a fence and had been thrown off the tractor while she was mowing the pasture.

He said her 10 year-old daughter had been riding her mini-bike in the same pasture at the time of the accident. McCall said the child then notified her father, who was asleep at their home.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Griffin Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at Rice Cemetery and Rev. Ode Meaders, pastor of the First Baptist Church, will officiate.

Mrs, Bailey was an active member of the Parent-Teacher Association, the Rice Community Association, member of Eastern Star, and a member of the Rice Baptist Church, She is survived by her husband; three daughters, Mrs. Mary Montfort of Kerens, Mrs. Kathy Bullard of Waxahachie, and Vera Lynn Bailey of Rice; one son, Bill Davis of Rice; two grandchildren, Troy Bullard and Kelly Montfort; her mother, Mrs. Lillian Tucker of El Paso; one sister, Mrs. Alta Russ of El Paso; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Griffin Funeral Home Chapel for Mrs. Lou Ella Bailey, 40, resident of Rice who was killed Monday evening when she fell from a tractor and was run over by a bush-hog mower.

Rev. Ode Meaders, pastor, of First Baptist Church in Rice, officiated, and burial was at Rice Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, three daughters, a son, two grandchildren, her mother, a sister, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers included Wayne Christian, Jack Thompson, Ott Loper, Jr., Larkin Kirk, Floyd Brewer and Grady McCall.

Rice Man Is Killed In Wreck

Texas Highway Patrolmen Albert Fisher and Bob Parrish investigated an accident 1.7 miles west of Rice on a County dirt road that resulted in a fatality.

Eddie J. Davis riding a motorcycle was fatally injured when the cycle struck a pickup driven by Ronald Ray Leach.

Both of the men involved were from Rice.

MRS. LULA GANTT, 80, FATALLY BURNED AT BLOOMING GROVE

Mrs. Lula Gantt, 80, pioneer resident of the Blooming Grove community, was fatally burned at her home In Blooming Grove Wednesday about 6 p.m. She was the widow of the late Jim Gantt. Mrs. Gantt was a native of Alabama, but had resided in and near Blooming Grove for 70 years. She lived alone.

Rites Thursday

Funeral services were held from the Blooming Grove Methodist Church Thursday at 2 p.m. The rites were conducted by Rev. Roy H. Davis, pastor. Burial was in the Lone Oak cemetery.

Sheriff Rufus Pevehouse said that Charles Drew Gillen was the first person to reach Mrs. Gantt's body after a fire alarm had summoned the fire department when flames were seen on a bed in the house.

W. B. Ellis, justice of the peace at Blooming Grove, conducted an investigation and returned a coroner's verdict of accidental death by burning.

Clothing Ignited It appeared that Mrs. Gantt's clothing were ignited from a gas stove and she crawled into her bed in an effort to smother the flames and then went into the kitchen where she turned on the water. Most of her clothing was burned.

Little damage was done the house except for the bed and water damage.

Mrs. Carl McGraw, en route to the church near Mrs. Gantt's home, saw a glow and flames through a bedroom window and turned in the fire alarm.

Survivors

Surviving are six brothers, Clarence and Arthur Cohorn, both of Lamesa; Olliean and Clemie Cohorn, both of Hamlin;  R. L. Cohorn, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Jack Cohorn New York City, N. Y., and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Pallbearers were Sammie Saunders, Robert Gantt, Bruce McCormick, Arthur Garrison, Billy Gillen and Miller Reid.

M. G. Deason Of Henrietta Dies

BLOOMING GROVE, Jan. 26 . Spl.) — M. G. Deason, 91, retired merchant, died in Henrietta Texas, early Tuesday morning.

Funeral arrangements were incomplete Tuesday noon, but are expected to be held Wednesday afternoon from the Christian church. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery.

Deason resided in Blooming Grove 70 or more years before moving to Henrietta five years ago. His wife recently died and was buried here.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs Jayne Womack. Dallas ; a niece, Mrs. Ethel Powell, Henrietta, reared in the Deason home three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and other relatives.

Tom Pevehouse, 80, lifetime resident of Blooming Grove, died in Memorial Hospital early Thursday.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. from the First Baptist 3hurch of Blooming Grove with burial in Rose Hill cemetery. The rites will be conducted by Rev. C. R. Adcock, pastor.

A retired farmer, Pevehouse is survived by a brother, A. D. Pevehouse, Blooming Grove; two sisters, Mrs. Nila Powers, Corsicana, and Mrs. Prudence Scott, Blooming Grove; and a number of nieces and nephews, including. Sheriff Rufus Pevehouse, Corsicana, McCormick Funeral Home Blooming Grove, will direct.

A. J. Grady Dies At Boise, Idaho

A. J. Grady, 55, of Corsicana died suddenly Saturday while on a business trip to Boise, Idaho.

The body is scheduled to arrive in Dallas Wednesday and funeral services are tentatively set for Thursday.

The family left Idaho by automobile Monday.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Grady, Corsicana; four daughters Mrs. N. C. McGehee, Route 4, Corsicana; Bettie Lou Grady, student in the University of Texas, and Martha and Camille Grady, all of Corsicana; mother, Mrs. Sallie Grady, Los Angeles, Calif.; a brother Tom Grady, Dallas; and two married sisters and other relatives McCormick Funeral Service of Blooming Grove will direct.

J. W. Kuykendall, 86, native Texan and resident of Emhouse for 42 years, died Saturday in the Galveston County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were held from the Emhouse Methodist church  Monday at 10:30 a. m. Burial was in the Pattison cemetery. The rites were conducted by Rev. Robert Llndsey, pastor of the church.

Kuykendall had been a member of the Methodist church since early in life.

Surviving are his wife of Emhouse; two sons, James B. Kuykendall, Galveston, and Dr. H. D Kuykendall, Sugarland; a daughter, Mrs. E. Summerlin, Alvin; five grandchildren; five great-grand children; two sisters and a brother.

Pallbearers were H. R. Ponder C. M. Dixon, C. B. Turner, Stokes Armstrong, Marvin Shows, Swint Huling. Honorary pallbearers Were friends of the family.

Mrs. W. L. (Ada) Merrell, 83 long-time Navarro county resident died in the Navarro Clinic Sunday afternoon.

Funeral services were, held from the Eleventh Avenue Methodist church Monday at 3 p. m. Burial was in the Dresden cemetery. The rites were conducted by Rev. J. L. Davenport, pastor of the church and Rev. Tom Allmon, Baptist minister of Hubbard.

A native of Longview, Mrs. Merrell was reared in Navarro county and resided at various points in West Navarro county in addition to Corsicana and Oak Valley.

Her late husband, Wiley L. Merrell was a prominent figure In political and other circles for many years.

Surviving are three sons, C. F. C. C. and Frank A. Merrell, all of Corsicana; three daughters, Mrs. T. J. Keathley and Mrs. David Donaho, both of Corsicana, and Mrs. Jack Bressie, Navarro; 2 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchidren; two sisters, Mrs. Alma Hollingsworth, Corsicana, and Mrs. M. B. Hubbard, Houston, and other relatives.

Pallbearers were Alvin Merrell Albert Merrell, Don Donaho, Jackie Bressie, Charles Cravens, J. A. Penney and D. F. Fields, grandsons.

Services Monday

Mrs. Agatha Elizabeth Moore, 82, widow of the late J. M. Moore, native of Navarro county, died in Providence Hospital, Waco, early Sunday morning.

Funeral services were held Monday at 10:30 a. m. from the First Baptist church in Hubbard, of which she had been a member since 1910.

The rites were conducted by Dr. Harold Lindsey, Baptist minister of Waco, and Rev. M. O. Cheek, Waco, District 14 Baptist missionary, former pastor of the Hubbard congregation. Burial was in the Dresden cemetery.

A native of Raleigh, Mrs. Moore was the daughter of the late I. N. Wilkinson, pioneer resident of West Navarro county. She resided in the Emmett community from the time of her marriage In 1893 when the family moved to Midland, moving to Hubbard a year later. Mrs. Moore had resided in Waco the past few years after her health declined.

She was active In church and club circles of Hubbard for many years.

Surviving are two sons. Col. I. G. Moore, Ennis, and General Aubry . Moore, Hillsboro; two daughters, Miss Sue Moore, Browning Library, Baylor University, Waco, and Mrs. J. W. Faulkner, Port Arthur; two grandchildren, Miss Carolyn Sue Faulkner, student in the University of Texas, and Jimmy Faulkner, both of Port Arthur; a brother, C. N. Wilkinson, Longview; a sister, Mrs. Lee Lowe, Blooming Grove, and other relatives.

Pallbearers were Ray Jarvis, Rupert Jones, Harold Weatherby, Dr. L. W. Courtnel, Ed Smith, Gene McDaniel, Dr. Hudson Long and A. B. Keitt.

O. B. Ballew Rites Tuesday

Funeral services for O. B. Ballew, 55, Navarro Junior College department head, who died in Galveston late Sunday of a heart attack, will be held Tuesday at 4 p. m. from the First Methodist church of which he was a member.
The rites will be conducted by Rev. John Wesley Ford, pastor, with burial in Oakwood cemetery.
Reared at Grand Prairie, he was a graduate of Southwestern Junior College at Keene, and held B. S. and M. S. degrees from North Texas State College at Denton. He had been connected with the State Home School here for several years when he went to Navarro Junior College in 1947 as instructor and head of the Industrial Education department.
Surviving are his wife, and a son, Lucky Ballew, both of Corsicana; a foster daughter, Mrs. J. M. Copeland, Houston; a foster son, Lloyd R. Williams, California; mother, Mrs. C. E. Ballew, Grand Prairie, and other relatives.
Pallbearers will be Gene Cummins, Robert Fernald, Roy Reese, Merlin Sanders, Al Hair, Franklin Slate, Sam Garrett, Harold Davidson, Cullen W. Dunn, Perry Taylor, C. M. Gillespie, Jr. , Ben Hawk, Dr. John Harper, Edward Hamilton and David Ralston, all scout masters.
The faculty and trustees of Navarro Junior College will be honorary pallbearers.

Funeral services for Mrs. Eliza A. Murphy, aged 73, widow of the late Jim Murphy, who died at the Navarro County Hospital Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock following a short illness were held Tuesday afternoon at the family home, 1503 West Seventh avenue, at 3 o'clock, with Rev. Tom Lenox, pastor of the First Christian church, officiating. Interment was made In Oakwood cemetery.
The deceased is survived by one sister, Miss Nan Stewart, and one brother, John Stewart.
The pallbearers were: Donald Smith, E. D. Holmes, J. M. Chambliss, M. C. Muns, Jess Hart and Charles Holloway.

Funeral services for Edgar Earle Burkhart Jr., 18 months old son of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Burkhart who died at the Corsicana Hospital and Clinic Wednesday night at 8:30 o'clock, following a serious illness of several days will be held at the Corley-McMahan Funeral Home Thursday afternoon at 4:30 with Rev. F. P. Culver pastor of the First Methodist church, officiating. Interment will be made in Oakwood cemetery.
This was the second of the Burkhart children to die in the past week, Mary Josephine, aged three and one-half years, was buried In Oakwood last Sunday afternoon.
Pallbearers will be C. C. Albritton, K. L. McKeown, S. W. Burdine, Will Huff and J. N. Royall.
Surviving are the parents, one brother and one sister.

Wm. J. (Bill) Bain, 51, native of Kerens, 2928 West Fourth avenue, died in Memorial hospital early Tuesday morning following only a few hours illness.
Funeral services will be held from the First Baptist church in Kerens, of which he was a member, Wednesday at 4 p. m.
with burial in the Kerens cemetery. The rites will be conducted by Rev. J. Garland McKee, pastor.
Bain has been employed as an interviewer with the Texas Employment Commission office here for the past seven years, moving to Corsicana only a few months ago.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Jean Bain; a son, Wm. J. Bain, Jr., both of Corsicana; a brother, A. L. Bain, Kerens; two sisters, Mrs. R. M. Tyus, Kerens, and Mrs. Ralph Kiligore, Rosebud, and other relatives.

J. Hollifield Dies Wednesday While Hunting

BLOOMING GROVE, June 3 — (SpU — Jack Hollifield, 67, Frost farmer, died of a heart attack Wednesday at 11 a.m. at a well at the Dresden cemetery.
He is reported to have been hunting on the creek nearby and with several friends, had gone to the well at the cemetery for a drink of water and later as they sat on a bench, was strick. Funeral services were incomplete early Wednesday afternoon pending arrival of relatives, but will be held from the Brushie Prairie Methodist church with burial In the Brushie Prairie cemetery. The services will be conducted by Rev. C. C. Ellis, pastor of the Frost Baptist church.
Hollifield was born in Lone Cedar and had resided south of Frost for many years, Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lucille Hollifield, Frost; mother, Mrs. Hattie Hollifield, Purdon; a daughter, Mrs, Betty Jo Baty, Cleburne; two step-sons, Roy Grounds, Jr., California, and Preston Grounds, Dallas; four brothers, Dave Hollifield, Blooming Grove; Loyd Hollifield, Dawson,Tom Hollifield, Brown and Nimmie Hollifield, Houston; four sisters, Mrs. Cannle Ewing, Blooming Grove; Mrs. Becky Hollingsworth, Barry; Mrs. May Haswell, Dallas, and Mrs. Jewell Turner, Purdon; five grandchildren and other relatives.

PIONEER RESIDENT EMHOUSE COMMUNITY DIED EARLY MONDAY

R. E. Richards, aged 72 years, long time resident of Emhouse community, died at his home east of Emhouse Monday morning at
11 o'clock and the funeral will be held from the Baptist church in Emhouse Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with interment in the Pattison cemetery. The funeral services will be conducted by Rev. J. F. Stanlee. Mr. Richards' wife died Feb. 26, 1930.
Surviving are five sons, F. W. Richards, Corslcana R. 2; A. C. Richards, Emhouse; D. O. Richards, Emhouse; J. G. Richards,
Penelope; J. D. Richards, Corbet; four daughters, Mrs. J. C. Gibson, Blue Grove; Mrs. G.M. Wilson, Corsicana, R. 6; Mrs. G. E. Collins, Emhouse, and Mrs. H. R. Smith, Emhouse, and other relatives.
The funeral will be directed by the Corley-McMahon Funeral Home.

R. L. Richards, 69, retired farmer, Route 4, Corsicana. died in the Methodist hospital in Dallas early Friday morning.

Funeral services will be held from the Corley Chapel Saturday at 2 p. m. Burial will be in the Pattison cemetery near Emhouse.

Surviving are two sons, E. E. Richards, Palestine, and A. L. Richards, Van; two daughters, Mrs. B. F. Bruce, Irving, and Mrs. G. W. Baker, Corsicana; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, R. C. Richards, Dallas; five sisters, Mrs. R. N. Wilson, Corsicana; Mrs, Johnny Hagle, Dawson; Mrs. Hattie Estes, Arp; Mrs. A. Whittle, Waco, and Mrs. Floyd Roberts, Pasadena, and other relatives.
